Clinging onto a thread covered in acid
Slowly eating away at your hand
Your arm and shoulder are next
It stings;
But the drop frightens you,
For the bottom is unknown,
But you are fading-
And this thread is breaking.
leaking more acid,
It burns, it burns
You have to give up,
A measly string cannot hold your weight,
You cannot force it to.
It leaks from agony, unable to hold you any longer.
Its breaking,
You scream.
Whether in pain or fear is unclear-
But it's too late.
The thread gave out,
I gave out,
And now you unwillingly fall to your death,
When it could’ve been a new life,
If you hadn’t broke the thread.

Hey Icarus! This is Alex, here to drop off a review. Let's dive right in!
To kick things off, the title was really descriptive and pulling. It has within itself and overwhelming load of precise actions and brimming emotions. There are four phrases, separated by commas. The first three are rather direct and simple to comprehend, and intrinsically interlinked. The fourth phrase is what really set it apart though. It's a feeling, against the usual physical activities. It suggestive and that's what makes it so poetic. However, I will not pretend the length of the title isn't a double edged sword. It's a little hefty and maybe not all that encompassing of the poem's gist. How about 'Acid dissolving the thread' or 'The breaking string' instead? If you're going for something more original, maybe- 'It snaps but I can't let go'.
I admit it isn't much shorter, but it is more coherent. Of course these are all just my personal suggestions, feel free to retain your current choice if you like it better.
The entire story is based on this elaborate scenes you paint before the reader. The subject is hanging by a thread, to a cliff, which is weakening under the effect of the corroding acid. How very dramatic!
I noticed the initial lines refrain from the use of punctuations while the rest of the poetry consistently follows them. I am puzzled on the purpose of this writing choice, as it just looks a tad odd and incomplete to me.
I have an alternative if you want to maintain the structure better.
'Pain stings throughout your skin
But the drop is more frightening'
I know I took too much of a liberty here so feel free to play around with the words, whatever you think fits better.
The crossroads depicted here is such a tricky dilemma. The subject is enduring the sting of the acid but is too afraid of the fall to let go of the thread. They are to choose their fate - get burned by the acid or go through the fall. Subject has made a clear choice here to hang on, but not because they prefer. Instead, this decision has been made in how much they fear the other option - falling into the unknown.
I love how the narration sounds very continuous. It's like the reader is witnessing the thread breaking bit by bit in real time. The pace is really impeccable here.
Normally I'd say it sounds repetitive, but this worked so well here. Probably my favourite line, despite being extremely simple. Keep up the great job!
It's clear that the future is rigged. The subject, as if knows, the inevitable fate but is trying to deny the obvious. There's an unresolved denial in the air and there's nothing more horrifying than that!
So thought provoking! Has the subject really had enough of suffering from the strong acid? Or are they too afraid of the impending fall? From their tendencies that I've established, I'm betting on the later.
Whoa! I don't really know what to make it but something has really been going on here. Was the narrator the thread? Do they mean this in a figurative sense, suggesting they were their support? It could be that they were trying to get the subject to safely jump all this while but they give up their efforts as the thread breaks. Or is it in a literal sense and we have a non living imaginative narrator! That'd be so original, not going to lie.
Wow, remarkable closing! The big reveal really caught me off guard. I find it doors to so many extended metaphor and wide ranging interpretations. Here's my best one- the acid is the subject's insecurities and negative habits that have led them down the cliff of their downfall.
But there's so many loose ends which could be tied through wild theories. What is the new life the narrator talking about when they were themselves encouraging the subject to let go earlier? What's with the contradicting asks? Also, if the subject couldn't hold on and had to fall anyways, what choice did they have that could get them out of this mess? It seems like a lose-lose situation to me.
Overall, this is such a peculiar poem. It's well thought and developed around a really intricate idea. The context is ambiguous at best but that's what makes it so versatile for different perspectives. The theme of self sabotage is clear. But at the same time, the situation is helpless- the subject cannot evade this checkmate. I liked how the flow is so natural, even it leads to a rather untidy structure. It sounds like there is a lesson to learn here, even if the reader can't pinpoint it. A very engrossing tale, with a tinge of scary realistic implications. I specifically liked the use of the word 'thread' instead of 'rope, it goes on to illustrate how delicate the support really is. The suspense was retained quite well and the execution of the reveal was truly wonderful. I really enjoyed reading this. It was my pleasure to review it. Hope I get to read more from you soon.
Thank you for the review! I appreciate all the advice and will take it into consideration.
has the deep, complex thought of true poetry. also has many implications, leaving much open for the reader to interpret. doesn't drag on, not too long. also has great elements for fitting horror, as well as symbolic realism.
Wow. I can only start to imagine how you were feeling when you wrote this.
At first I felt the analogy and combination of acid and a thread would be a bit weird, but as the poem went on, it could not fit better. The vivid imagery you used really brings it all to life for a reader. I was not just reading but "seeing" the scene for myself. I struggled a little bit with the structure and flow of the poem, but I shouldn't be the one to judge as I myself don't follow it at times😅. But finally the climax of the poem came, and it seriously caught me by surprise. It flooded me with sadness, and I don't think it could have been any better. A very emotionally stirring poem. Well done!
Hi thank you for reviewing! And I agree, the structure is definitely not perfect, I like the concept of this poem a lot, but I did write it a few years back so I%u2019ll probably re-rewrite it with my current writing abilities.
