*This fanfic is underneath my folder titled “Dead boy detectives fanfics”. It is how I interpreted the thoughts of one of the characters, Edwin, from the Netflix show “Dead boy detectives” and his feelings for a close friend of his. I wrote this while I was in the middle of the show, before Edwin told Charles how he felt. (It was an episode where Charles came to rescue Edwin from a terrible fate). Though Charles didn’t feel the same way, he still cared about Edwin, and he said that he always would (which is so nice!!). Anyway, I won’t spoil anything else. Gacha club character designs are under my forum titled “My character designs<33”. Enjoy and please watch the show! It’s awesome!*
“You’re my best mate, Edwin. And you always will be.”
Best mate. “Best mate”. All he ever would be. That was all Edwin ever was to him. It shouldn’t have shocked him, he knew Charles for decades, yet it didn’t hurt any less.
Charles always wanted the love of a living girl. When he looked at Edwin, he saw a friend. Nothing more, nothing less. Just a friend. Oh, how Edwin wanted to pull him close and kiss him, to tell him that he loved Charles, and that he always would, but no.
He could never tell Charles, no matter how much it was eating away at him, no matter how much it made him want to scream, no matter how much it made him choke.
It wasn’t the right thing to do. Edwin’s feelings were selfish and cruel, deplorable and a mess. The right thing was to stand by and leave Charles be, but oh, how it hurt! How it hurt so bad! How it felt like parts of him were breaking away, every day!
“Best mate”. He hated those words, those shackling, bonding words. Charles meant nothing bad of it, Edwin knew, but why? Why couldn’t they be more? After all those decades, and Edwin still couldn’t say the words that he wanted to with every lifetime that passed them by, the words he wanted to say a long time ago.
He wouldn’t dare say them, never, ever. Being Charles’ best mate would have to do, friendship was as close as Edwin would get.
Edwin loved passionately and brightly, like a girl. His feelings twisted and contorted, like a girl’s.
And if he were a girl, then maybe Charles would look at him differently.
But that was not to be.
The creeping, crawling, clawing feeling of love would haunt Edwin forevermore, it seemed.

Guys, I lied. I have another spoiler down below!
One of the things Charles and Edwin will do is that when they want to communicate with the living and the living aren’t like Crystal (a medium who can see ghosts, who helps the boys with their missions and is the love interest of Charles), they will transform into other people that the living CAN see. Charles’ disguise is always that of a man and Edwin always, always, disguises himself as a woman. They both disguise as older people (Edwin in particular) maybe because they’re trapped in a state of youth forever and so do not want to be perceived in a younger way. I should also note that Charles died in the 1980s, and Edwin died in the year 1916. So yes, the years that they have died may shape the way they think and act, especially Edwin, who had to live in the time of the 1900s. Alright, vamp out!

I love how you express the deep and complex emotions of Edwin, it really helps the reader to empathize with our fellow. I also enjoy the way you relate to the readers, many people have been friendzoned and many more probably before they even got to confess, and you show the emotions experienced in that scenario perfectly here. I find Edwin's mindset interesting, because he could tell Charles how he feels, if they were "best mates" then Charles would accept Edwin, he wouldn't abandon him, maybe Edwin is too deeply dug into his feelings that he doesn't think this far (although ive never read the show so this take is purely based on your story). Overall i like how you worded the story and how you expressed Edwin's emotions in an effective manner that allowed readers to relate to him.
I%u2019m glad you enjoyed this!
OOH- I really like this, right from the start. It seems like hearing Charles say that felt like a betrayal. It seems like he liked him a lot more than just being his 'best mate'. From reading further, it seems like Charles wants to love a living girl, but not a guy like Edwin
I really liked these lines. You pull in your horror twist and give some creepy-sounding examples here. Your descriptions are great. Normally when we think of love, we just think of these great and happy feelings, but you remind us how it can also be the opposite- it can feel like we are choking. You do a great job at capturing this feeling of a desire for someone that we can't have. This is such a sad story so far... I feel bad for Edwin.
I like how you use the phrase "but why?" from Edwin. We can really see how strong his feelings for Charles are... this poor guy. At the end, it seems like he almost wants to transform into a girl in order to make Charles fall in love with him- that would be crazy but I would be interested to see how that would go.
I need to know what happens to them next! The alliteration is so good in this last line too. Overall, I really want to know more about them and what happens to them... does Edwin ever tell Charles how he feels? This was a great, but very short, story
Your friend,
Ellie
So glad you enjoyed!
In the show, %u201CDead Boy Detectives%u201D (which is what this is a fanfic of), Edwin does, and Charles tells him that although he doesn%u2019t feel the same way about Edwin, he will still be there for him. It%u2019s a bittersweet moment in the show, but hey%u2026
There%u2019s only one season. There is still hope yet!
