Ren stepped out into the rain and looked up into the sky. The downpour stung their eyes, but they didn’t care. They could use the water to hide their tears, maybe, but nobody would believe them. With a blotchy red face and a running nose, even the least observant person could tell something was wrong. So Ren decided to forget about everything and just cry. The little grey front porch creaked as they sobbed. The sun wouldn’t come out any time soon, but that was the least of their concern. Maybe it wouldn’t come out at all. Ren couldn’t seem to look that far ahead.
Ren stepped inside the small house. The house seemed empty, even though the TV and radio were on to fill the silence. Just looking at their group photos hung in the hallway was painful. It wasn’t like it used to be. The whole house was a pair of lungs with all the air knocked out. A hollow ping on their phone echoed throughout the house. Ren dragged their feet on their way to check it. It read:
Samantha: hey u good?
Samantha: Do you want me to come over and talk? We all miss u at school
Samantha: are u there Ren
Samantha: I bought cinnamon rolls and a milkshake if u want them
Samantha: I'm coming over, leave the door unlocked
Samantha: i’m here
The doorbell chimed and the door creaked open. Samantha’s familiar footsteps padded through the myriad of woven carpets. She gently opened Ren’s bedroom door. It smelled like old coffee, dirty laundry, and grief. The room was a mess, so unlike the usual immaculate organization. Ren was wrapped in all their blankets, immobile and silent. They were lying on the floor in a fetal position, trying not to speak. If they did, they wouldn’t be able to stop crying. Samantha sat down next to them, moving the pillow, then sat down the milkshake and cinnamon rolls.
“Are you ok? Actually no, that’s a stupid question. You’re not ok and neither am I,” she said, voice trembling.
“It’s just so strange and awful. Jon-Jonathan is actually gone. It’s not a dream or a joke, and there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it, and I hate it! I can’t process that he’s rea-really… dead,” Ren said as the tears rolled down their face.
“I know, Ren. I know,” Samantha said. She reached out to Ren and hugged them tight. Then they ate the cinnamon rolls, which were a bit crushed, but still warm.
Thunder crashed as they sat next to each other, looking through photos of them and Jonathan and remembering the best memories. The dim light illuminated their tear-stained faces.
The photos seemed to go on forever. Samantha got up and looked at the clock.
“It’s midnight, you need to get some sleep.” Samantha whispered.
Ren didn’t respond, they felt they didn’t need sleep anymore, and they really didn't want to. When there was nothing to wake up to next morning, all they could do now was sit and stare at the wall. They didn’t know if it was just them, but their mind was so foggy they couldn’t think of something to say even if they had wanted to. “The funeral is tomorrow,” Samantha said quietly. “Are you going?”
“Yeah, I will,” Ren answered dully. They felt like a little candy wrapper being tumbled through the wind. A few hours later, Samantha left after cleaning up a bit. She waited until Ren fell asleep and silently headed out the door, climbed into her olive colored car and drove home.
Ren woke up the next morning, rubbing the sleep from their bleary eyes. They rolled over to wake up Samantha, but she was gone. She probably left after I had fallen asleep, Ren thought. She can't be here all the time, she's got responsibilities to take care of. They got up and went to the counter. Some food sat in a container with a painfully bright pink sticky note on top. They trudged over trying to read the sticky note, but the words seemed to blur.
Hey, I had to get to school, I’ll be back after school with your stuff! Love you Ren!
❤, Samantha.
Ren stared at the dino nuggets in the container she had left, but they weren't hungry at all. She is really spoiling me, isn’t she, they thought wryly. Everything felt like they were in a void. They laid on the couch and drifted off to sleep.
Ren woke up to a phone buzz. They stretched their joints out; they were still sore from sleeping on the floor. It was still drizzling. Ren’s phone buzzed louder.
Samantha: I can be ur ride for the funeral if you want
Samantha: If ur ready
The world seemed to spin. Ren was not ready to be near a car yet. Thinking of being in a car made every alarm go off in their head. It was the very thing that had taken Jonathan away from everyone who loved him. And to Ren, it felt like their fault.
A flash of the memories came back. It was afternoon, one and a half weeks ago. The two of them were driving home from school. They were singing to the radio, albeit out of tune and with excessive air guitar. And then suddenly a crippling blow as the car skidded across the road. Bang, Bang, Bang. Ren's head was yanked back and forth by the car's momentum, leaving them sick to their stomach. Ren tried to unbuckle the seat belt, but it was bashed in by the door. Jonathan asked Ren if they were OK, voice labored. There were sirens wailing, crushed metal scraping and the bitter smell of gas and flames, multiple cars folded like a deadly origami. They shrieked when they saw a bone jutting unnaturally out of Jonathan's leg, blood everywhere. Shattered glass coated the ground like snow. People shouting, medics rushing, Ren screaming with a voice that didn't seem to come from them. Ren looked around, panicked. They saw Jonathan's curly mop of hair rest gently over his eyes, like a bloodied veil. And then Jonathan's eyes going dull, his head sinking into the airbag. No last words. Just a ragged breath and then- nothing. Like a light bulb switched off. Ren felt like the floor was spinning and dipping.
Bang, Bang, Bang. Ren felt their heart race before they realized it was someone knocking on the door. They sounded impatient. Ren put on a steady face, trying to keep from keeling over, and walked to the door. Standing in front of them was Samantha, a takeout box, and a concerned look on her face.
“Are you alright?” she asked.
“I'm fine." Ren said gruffly, about to slam the door in Samantha's face. They were not about to drive again. They could stay in their little house forever. That was fine by them. Samantha frowned. "I brought you some food to eat on the way," she said. Her eyes had dark circles under them, and her hair was a mess. Samantha, as small as she was, easily forced her way in the door. She set the stuff down, turned around and gave them a hug. Even though Ren hadn't wanted Samantha to come in, Ren felt a little better. Samantha's hair smelled comforting, like clean cotton sheets and bakeries.
“Ren. I need to ask you something. Will you be there at the funeral?”
They didn’t answer.
“Ren. I feel like I’ve lost both of my best friends. I can’t go without both of you! You keep shutting everything out. I want to help. I get it. It’s so hard, I felt it too, and I still do. We just show it differently. But you can’t stop living. You have to face the world somehow,” Samantha said, nearly crying.
Ren sat still.
“It’s what Jonathan would have wanted. He always wanted the best for you,” Samantha said, her voice tinged with grief.
The words hit Ren like a sledgehammer. But it was the truth. Ren looked Samantha in her big blue eyes and uttered four words that seemed to lift all the pressure off their chests. “I’ll try. I promise,”
A few months later, Ren stepped out in the rain. But this time they weren’t crying. Instead they smiled. “I kept my promise, Jonathan. I tried for you. And it worked.”
They walked inside and closed the door as the sun peeked through the storm clouds.
My friend SK and I collaborated on this for school. I edited this a bit and cleaned it up! Hope you enjoy! I

This story was.. really beautiful. I loved it.
Hi!!! Wayward here for a short review!
This story was done gorgeously. I love the way you develop the story as it goes along, revealing bit by bit. The way you’ve written grief , too, is lovely.
“The whole house was a pair of lungs with all the air knocked out.” This sentence is,,, so lovely. The metaphor is stunning and gets your point across perfectly. Almost everyone has had the air knocked out of them at some point, and this metaphor helps the reader to understand how Ren sees things now.
“It smelled like old coffee, dirty laundry, and grief.” This zeugma is excellent!! Zeugmas are fairly hard to find in literature, so I love that you included one! It also created such a vivid image of Ren’s room and, through that, they way they’ve been coping with their loss.
“She probably left after they had fallen asleep, Ren thought.” In this line, Ren thinks of themself in the third person, when they should be thinking of themself in first person.
“Bang, Bang, Bang, Ren felt their heart race before they realized it was someone knocking on the door.” First off real quick you might want to change the third comma to a period, as it’s a transition to an action tag. Otherwise, this quote is LOVELY and I adore the way you’ve brought Ren’s memory into real life, reflecting the moment and how it’s affected them. It’s absolutely beautiful.
Overall, this story was incredible. Other than a couple of grammatical errors, I have nothing to critique!! It conveyed loss and grief in a very real way, and you developed your characters well for how short the story was. Lovely!!
Thank you so much for your review!! I always appreciate when people catch my grammar mistakes
I'll fix it right away!
Hey! I hope this comment finds you well.
I'm gonna start this by saying that I'm assuming that Ren is nonbinary, which I thought was super cool just because I never see a lot of it and I appreciate that about this piece!
I also thought the depiction of grief here is super spot on! I don't mean to overshare, but I also lost a loved one recently and have been in a serious accident before and found that this work was almost cathartic in terms of how it displayed the emotion so accurately that it echoed something I've already been through, which is something I really enjoy in my reading. That being said, I would also have loved to know more about Jonathan and his relationship with Ren, maybe a small flashback or tidbit featuring him? If for no other reason than because it would give the reader the ability to connect to him and better feel connected to the loss of him apart from what we just see Ren experiencing.
I know another reviewer commented on this as well, but it does seem off that Samantha would be so lighthearted in her texts to them so soon after they've both just lost somebody that was clearly important to them, though I can understand people using humor as a coping mechanism. Maybe there could be a better way of portraying that in her in another way besides joking about breaking into their home, which more comes across as annoying and insensitive.
That's all I've got! I really enjoyed this, and I look forward to seeing more of your work in the future!
I am so glad you enjoyed this! About the texts, I had edited and republished the story yesterday fixing that. I did not expect this story to get such a response!! I am so happy you like it and that the emotions were accurate.
Hey there! MapleWay here with a quick review!
I really liked this piece! The dialogue felt very realistic and I loved the overall message as well! I definitely feel this will help a lot of people! The thing I liked the most was the texts! It had such a unique charm that I don't see very often!
The only flaw I really found was the fact you kept referring to Ren as them/they. Though I do get the reason it makes it hard to understand sometimes. I kept thinking that Samantha and Ren were doing the same thing.
Otherwise, this was an outstanding story! Thanks for writing it!

Thanks for your review!
No problem!
Hmm, I love, and appreciate, this piece of work. Sadly I can relate, my brother was hit by an 18 wheeler, now he wheels around in a wheelchair, and is mentally challenged, so this really hit home hard for me. He was only 7 years old. I was there, and you don't understand how much I value seconds now. That being said, I am glad I decided to read this, powerful peace, really really powerful. Brought back all those memories. The description was spot on. The dialogue was a we bit choppy, but nothing could have ruined this piece for me, It was powerful, very very powerful and I commend you for that. that's all for this review, until next time!
I'm so glad this resonated with you.
That made my day. I am so glad you like it! <3333333
Hi ayelenwritesstuff,
What's Working:
This is a good short story you have here. It's hard to write short short stories so I'm impressed with how you were able to fit all this conflict into this story without it feeling tightly packed and rushed. Your dialogue is natural and each character sounds distinct from the other. I like each of your characters (though perhaps you can show a bit of Jonathan's character?). I also really liked the way you described things. Especially this line:
I also really like the way you incorporated texting into this short story. It's very realistic and with the times.
What Needs Some Work:
Grammar/Wording:
• The opening sentence isn't very gripping or interesting. Perhaps begin with a character thought that introduces the situation or conflict.
• There is a repetition of rain in the first two sentences, perhaps describe rain in more detail (raindrops streaming down their face)
• the ➞ their
• I believe it should be: that was the least of their concerns
• I also wanted to mention that I didn't get that Ren's pronouns were they/them until half way through the piece. I thought your were writing about a group/couple of people and that created a distant feeling in the narration. I'm not sure how you can introduce that these are Ren's pronouns, perhaps an internal thought and then the dialogue tag of "they said" will show that.
• clearing ➞ moving; setting ➞ sat
• There should be period here instead of commas.
Show Don't Tell:
• When describing how Ren feels you use statements instead of descriptions. Descriptions help the reader feel like they are actually feeling what the characters are feeling. So perhaps instead of saying they aren't tired, aren't hungry, are sad, show how that feels.
• This is a good example of telling. Instead of saying it sickened them, show how that sickness feels.
Story Structure
• I found it sudden and jarring when you started using the character names, perhaps introduce them earlier so it transitions more smoothly.
• When Samantha came into Ren's house, I felt this scene was too smooth. Maybe adding some tension would make this feel more natural. People can be hostile when they are hurting. Ren seems to open up too easily.
• Samantha seems to get over her grief too quickly, perhaps show that she is dealing with the grief in another way and that she needs to be strong for Ren (and how that's taking a toll on her).
• I found the transition to the flashback a little jarring too. I also felt like it was a full flashback, perhaps a scene would be better. I didn't feel there enough as a reader.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, I think this is a really good short story. Most of the things I pointed out are easy fixes so that just shows how good this story is already. I hope you found this review helpful.
Keep writing!

Hello. Here for a review.
Glows
It was too god. Not flawless, but it was amazing. I was hooked throughout the story. It speaks of losses and what follows. Both of you did a good job in collaborating the story. It described the relationship between three friends or rather it seemed the relationship was like siblings. I liked the setting and the title too. The last was actually awesome.
Grows
I think in the rain is better and the correct one.
Stung might not be the correct word here. Think for some alternative.
These dialogues are a bit unrealistic
Those love signs should be avoided. Leave....in– Change it. As the atmosphere is sad and it is known to Samantha, why should she use words such as lol??
You can make Ren stammer more in this paragraph like Jon-Jonathan is really go–gone...
Thanks for the read. Enjoyed reading this. Keep it up. If you need any help, you can always pm me.
Bye!!!
Thank you so much for the review! I will probably edit it soon and I appreciate your critiques very much.
Glad to know that it helped you.
