In Short Stories

This is a short story segment from a new idea I had. I'm hoping to go farther with this in the future, but I'm just gonna call this part one to a prologue to who-knows-what. :)

Please enjoy! (This is by no means in its final form yet.)

The Realm of Lousy Characters

We have all seen the good characters: well-crafted, heroic or villainous creations of an exceptional author's genius. Every detail of their characteristics smells of imagination and creativity; even their appearance is fascinating. They are the epitome of dynamic characters, with such depth that they could combat the Mariana trench. They've had enough fan fiction written about them to fill a bookcase.

But what about the bad characters? Characteristics haphazardly thrown together, like a really poorly done patchwork quilt. They are shallow and practically the definition of clique. How many times have they heard “Well, I guess this will work...” from the mouths of mediocre and lazy authors? They had great ambitions of being the star in a great fantastical world or a hero in a grand quest. They dreamed of being that dark-cloaked villain with the evil laugh that sends shivers running down the spines of any who hears their name. Instead, they find themselves playing a character that would barely get cast as the walk-on tree in a school play.

These atrocious characters are gathering for a council, trying to determine how they can possibly make themselves into something great. How will they shed their stereotypical nature and become the characters of legend? Can they save their poorly-crafted stories and revolt against lazy and unimaginative authors? As they gather together for an urgent meeting, perhaps some ideas will present themselves.

Come delve into the lives of the unlucky and unfortunate. This is the realm of Lousy Characters.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“It was a dark and stormy night. The wind whished through the branches like a hot knife through butter. The air was as thick as pea soup, and a dark figure dashed towards the huge castle like a dog with its tail between its legs, a far cry from the other figure boldly striding forward with apparent nerves of steel. Well, better late than never for that fellow, I suppose.”

A very unsubtle cough cut across the running monologue.

“Hey, dude, cool it with the cliches! Besides, who elected you narrator for this story? Just wait till the others arrive.”

Captain Cliche leaned against the windowsill, glaring out at the dark courtyard grumpily.

“Well, Fan Girl, I hate to burst your bubble, but you're not much better than I am. All those puns are driving me up the wall… I hope someone else gets here soon, otherwise I'll be fit to burst.”

“Say another sentence, and I'll punch you so hard your kids will be feeling it.” Fangirl growled, adjusting the electrical cord loop hanging at her side. She plopped down into a high-backed chair, resting her boots on the table. She yawned, commenting,

“Those two 'shadowy figures' of yours should be coming through the gate any time soon. I hope we don't have to wait any longer. This castle gives me the jeebies, and there aren't any outlets to plug my fan-tastic propeller suit into if anything happens.”

The high screech of a bat echoed through the dusty chamber. Several lanterns illuminated the room, flickering eerily and casting strange shadows across the floor. The huge wooden doors leading into the main hall where the two were still bickering began to swing open, creaking on their hinges.

The first figure stepped into the light, pushing back the hood from his face to reveal a carefully twisted mustache, a mop of black hair, and a tan trenchcoat. He flashed a brilliant smile, proclaiming boldly,

“Good evening, sir and madame. Might I inquire if this is the Council of Lousy Characters meeting?”

“Yep, this is it. We've been waiting for the head leader person to arrive, but they must be running late or something… Dust off a chair and have a seat!” Fan Girl motioned to the other high-backed chairs surrounding the table.

“Who are you?” she asked as the man sat down. He coughed lightly, trying to pull himself up to his full height.

“Ah, my name is Sheerluck Holmes. Yes, it was a very unfortunate play on words. My author has a thing for making ridiculous, pun-ridden names.”

“Mm, I feel you there. I'm Fan Girl… You can probably guess at the origin of that name.”

Captain Cliche peered towards the open doors, where another figure had appeared quite suddenly, a single drop of sweat dripping down his face.

“And who might you be, good sir? Another fellow character down on his luck?”

The man brushed away the drop of sweat, striding into the dim light. His white and blue skintight costume appeared to gleam and sparkle, even in such poor lighting.

“Sorry, good citizens, but there was a man trying to steal a piece of jewelry about 58 miles from here, and since I was in the area, I thought I'd best stop that dirty thief right then and there.” The gigantic “M” on his chest bulged as he sucked in air, trying to regain his breath.

“Oh, great… Megaman.” Fan Girl muttered, leaning over to Captain Cliche as she commented, “He put every other superhero out of business in his comic series. He has so many superpowers that he hasn't even had time to use them all yet. He's also extremely cocky...”

A gentle, feminine voice broke through the conversation.

“Good evening, everyone. I apologize for being late, but I was caught up in conversation with our two newest members.” A woman dressed in all white emerged from a passageway, her golden hair braided and wrapped on top of her head. A prissy young girl wobbled into the room, her multi-layered pink dress swishing against the floor. She was followed by a clanking pile of armor, likely inhabited by a man, but to those already assembled in the hall, it was difficult to tell.

The woman made a sweeping motion to the two.

“This is Princess Alice and Knight Robert. They will introduce themselves later, and the rest of you will have a chance to do the same. We have much to discuss. Everyone, please take a seat.” The noise of wood scraping stone reverberated through the rafters. After a few moments, everything was silent.

The woman's eyes examined the assembly, making a mental note as her eyes stopped at each face. Captain Cliche glanced down and murmured,

“Ah, silence is golden, isn't it?”

“I swear, I will stuff you down a well if you don't shut up.” Fan Girl hissed, elbowing him roughly.

The woman hide a chuckle and smiled.

“Greetings to you all. My name is Emma, and I am, oh, shall we say, the leader of this council. I know all of you have been deeply hurt by the tragedy of poor character development. The shallow ideals and completely unoriginal characteristics are often detrimental to the outcome of each of your stories. You feel angry towards lazy and often uncaring authors who didn't put in time and effort into imagining your character. They were, instead, focused on the plot, setting, or even… Even characters that they deemed more important than yours.”

At this point, an audible sob was heard from inside the walking armory. Princess Alice sniffed and turned up her nose.

“I don't know what you're whining about, Robert. Our story is really about me, not you. I'm the princess, after all.” The armory's shoulder plates slumped.

Emma rapped the table to regain attention.

“I realize there is a great deal of hurt inside everyone. Each of you has likely tried to change your stories, maybe throw in a good joke or two or even rescue a little girl from a river, but you feel like there is nothing you can do. But we can do great things, if we are willing to work together. Perhaps we should start by introducing ourselves. Sharing your story may help us all understand other perspectives and allow us to formulate a plan. Sheerluck Holmes, will you start? Tell us about yourself and your story.”

Sheerluck cleared his throat, gazing down at the table.

“Aye, about myself… My name is Sheerluck Holmes, and I'm a detective. My story is one of crime, daring adventures, dastardly villains, and heinous murder plots. Dozens of evil crimes have been thwarted under my watch. Only… I'm a horrible detective...”

He paused for a moment, sniffling.

“I failed the police academy, but somehow I got through as a bobby. My first year on the job, I was on eight different cases and I lost every single criminal. Yet somehow I became a detective. Every single case I've been on, the criminal has outsmarted me at every turn, except they keep making the dumbest mistakes. One bad fellow, he stepped into a bear trap and couldn't get out for an hour, until me and the boys tracked him down. Another one got hit by a car and we picked him up at the hospital. Two of them just up and turned themselves in! They said they had gotten too bored of the chase and wanted to retire from a life of crime. All I wanted to be was a police man, just doing his civic duty and protecting the innocent. But to be humiliated as a detective… I can't do anything right!”

Sheerluck broke into tears, wiping his eyes with a stained handkerchief. Emma coughed politely.

“Are you finished, Sheerluck?”
He nodded.

“Good. Thank you for sharing. Megaman, do you care to go next?”

“It would be my pleasure, fair citizen.” Megaman flashed a smile, then grimaced and rubbed his jaw.

“Sorry, I got socked a little hard after that last supervillain. I'm Megaman, caped defender of the galaxy. You can read my story in Megaman volume #2.” Six comic issues whished across the table, landing in front of every council member.

Emma smiled graciously.

“Please do go on….”

“Ah, yes… As I was saying, story in volume #2, but here's the scoop. I'm bored. I'm really, really bored, because my author gave me way too many superpowers. I mean, I can sense if a little boy is pickpocketing his grandma for money for an ice cream truck from a thousand miles away. And if anyone cares, there are five of them doing that right now. But I have nothing to do! All the supervillains are long-since defeated, and now all my author lets me do is rescue kittens from trees and plant trees to help the earth. I can plant an orchard in under twenty seconds, so that just doesn't cut it. All the other superheroes hate me. They think I'm stuck up, and the author booted them all out of the comic series, so they're now out of a job. I just don't know what to do. I mean, flight and super strength are good enough for me, but super speed, invisibility, super hearing, super vision, x-ray vision, super smelling, super...”

“I think that's enough, thank you.” Emma cut in.

She glanced over her list, her eyebrows furrowing. “Captain… Cliche?”

“Yeah, that's me...” Captain Cliche said, shuffling his feet awkwardly. “I don't really know that I have much to say… I don't even really know who I am. My author is an 8th grade boy who just learned about similes and know doesn't know where to stop. I feel like a fish out of water sometimes. All I remember is a pair of headlights coming towards me… I couldn't stop saying cliches. I didn't know what I was saying. It was all some cruel joke, no doubt. Junior-high humor… All I want to do is even the playing field, just a little bit, and get back at the brat. But I suppose all I can do right now is keep a stiff upper lip and keep going.”

A high pitched scream split the air, causing the bats lodging in the rafters to scatter, their screeches in a horribly off-key harmony with the scream.

“Someone help!! He's after me!!!”

OMG IT'S WONDERFUL XDD well everyone else has already commented for the editing, so I'm just gonna make this a "GOOD JOB" comment. This.is.so.funny. I love the character, Fangirl? seriously? lol. It's everything I wanted!! I'm so excited to read the next one!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I cracked myself up quite a bit writing it. :)
I'm hoping somewhere along the line I'll get around to planning out this story, but right now... eh...

I absolutely loved this and I'm so excited to read more! This story is so creative and out-of-the-box and I found that extremely refreshing. I can see that you've definitely done some research and have put a lot of work into making your characters as "cliche" as possible. You've done an amazing job at that. I like that you've put fitting traits to your characters, like how Sherlock Holmes is supposed to be this intelligent detective while you make your character based off him a bit more relatable by putting emphasis on his mistakes. That is extremely clever and I loved that viewpoint.
One thing I was confused on was the tone. Because this is pointing out the stereotypes and common characters used in fiction, I wasn't sure if your characters were supposed to be dramatic or misunderstood. If you were going for dramatic, a way to help could be stepping up the drama to make it more clear that these characters are overly concerned about themselves. If you were going for being misunderstood, you could maybe tone down the drama to make it a bit more realistic and serious, as being misunderstood can be a very relatable and sensible issue. Overall, this beginning was very entertaining and it was the perfect way to introduce us to your story. Keep it up!

Thanks for the review! (And a late welcome to YWS!)
Hmm, I hadn't thought about the tone of the piece like that. I suppose some of the characters are dramatic, and some are misunderstood. But consistency with those would definitely be helpful to establish.
If you feel so inclined, I would love your input on the second part to this intro.

So far seems like a good series. I can imagine it as a cartoon, wouldn't that be funny. It's kinda ironic considering the fact that one of my OCs is named Alice. And is a princess... Oh well, got to be extra careful when crafting her story I guess. Now it's everyone's favorite time... REVIEW TIME!*sarcastic yay* I have to say this is really creative and realistic in a weird sense. In truth, every character is a chiche in a sense. It just depends on how realistic the character is. If the character sounds like someone that can be your neighbor, friend,or even yourself, you know you've got gold. If it's a character that's uninteresting, unrealistic,or way too perfect then you've got a throw character. The only criticisms that I have are really Captain Cliche? And the plot's a little hmmmmm cliche. After a second read ,you see that's kinda the joke. At least,I hope that was your intention. Overall fun story, keep writing!

Well, the story is intended to highlight cliche and poorly put together writing. (All authors do it to some extent, so this isn't intended to mock people. More like pointing out bad writing habits and such)

Okay, this is awesome. Seriously. I think you could make it even better, but you might need someone more skilled than me to work out exactly what to edit. But I will try. :P

I noticed rosette commented about some confusion she had with the first couple of paragraphs - personally, I had assumed you were talking about two different types of authors - the great ones, and the... not so great/just trying to slap something together and sell it authors, but you could probably tweak them a bit to make it clearer.

I also think you could possibly condense the opening paragraphs, particularly the third one where all the questions get slightly repetitive. Not too much, just a little trimming.

I love that you're not just going for "under-appreciated" or "underdeveloped" characters - you're going for legitimately, genuinely awful ones. It's so much funnier.

“Hey, dude, cool it with the cliches! Besides, who elected you narrator for this story? Just wait till the others arrive. I'm trying to decide which mask to wear… Hmm, maybe fan-tastic blue… Or maybe just a gray that will just blow everyone away.”

This paragraph of dialogue wasn't the best introduction to Fan Girl's character in my opinion. It read awkwardly and I don't think it fit as well as it could with her dialogue throughout the rest of the story. Maybe it just needs to be broken up? Those few paragraphs lack a lot of setting or detail about what the characters are doing, and it makes it seem a bit rushed. I think the paragraph describing the spooky atmosphere would do better before the comment about the castle giving Fan Girl the shivers.

TL:DR of that paragraph: In general, I didn't start really getting into this until the other characters arrived, so try to concentrate your editing on making the beginning the best it could be.

“Those two 'shadowy figures' of yours should be coming through the gate any time soon. I hope we don't have to wait any longer

At first, I thought this was Captain Cliche speaking and it confused me.

Six comic issues whished across the table, landing in front of every council member.

This made me laugh so hard.

At this point, an audible sob was heard from inside the walking armory. Princess Alice sniffed and turned up her nose.

“I don't know what you're whining about, Robert. Our story is really about me, not you. I'm the princess, after all.” The armory's shoulder plates slumped.

This made me laugh and feel really bad for the poor guy at the same time.

Something I don't know is who Emma is. All the others have their cliche-ness obvious from the first few moments they're in the room, except for her. My best guess is that she's the wise, all-knowing beautiful queen cliche? It makes me wonder if she's different for some reason - maybe she's not cliche at all. I hope it's explained at some point.

And that's all I've got! Let me know if you post another part of this, because I'll definitely want to read it.

Yeah, this is still kinda rough, especially since I don't know where it's going. :)
But the idea is more like a council of bad characters that are trying to figure out what to do, but it's also turned into somewhat of a therapy session, just because there's so much pain and hurt that these poor creations have had to suffer through.
Once I get the 2nd part written, it'll probably make more sense. I might do a little work on this first

Hello ajruby12.

Okay. Woah. Woah. WOAH. This was absolutely hilarious. I am way too in love with this thing and it's not even funny. But it was funny! Aggghhh. xD You have succeeded in making me laugh. Captain Cliche and Fangirl and Megaman... I mean, WHAT even! Incredible cast of characters, here. Brilliant work, my dear. (Why didn't I think of something like this??!!)

But enough of the gushy-ness. That really isn't like me, and I need to get to work.

Your intro was good and enjoyable, but a little piece of it nagged at me. You tell us about the super solid main characters that have been created; so great and awesome, fan fiction has been made on them. I assumed when you were talking about these great main characters, you were talking about very famous ones (because fan fiction isn't made for my MC's) like, Harry Potter or whatever. But then you mention the lousy characters thrown into these stories, that no one pays attention to and I went WAIT - hold up there.

These authors and story writers are famous; no, their works are famous for a reason. They can't afford to have some insignificant, lousy character thrown into their story. They can't afford to say, "Well, I guess this will work..." Those characters would've been chopped out a loooong time ago.
So now I'm confused. Because you're not talking about the same type of author here, but yet you never specified.

However. I absolutely LOVE when the story starts. I was literally just about to highlight that first paragraph and point out you had one too many comparisons there when I realized it was Cliche speaking. HAHA. He's hilarious! I think he's my favorite character so far. It's like, yeah, their characters's are so poorly made up; but yet they're not because they just do what they do. Except in Megaman's case, it's quite a lot to do.

Getting more specific, though, I'm wondering how they were all assembled together and why. This "head leader person" - Emma - got this crazy bunch of people who have never met each other to all meet in this castle aaand for what purpose? It sounds like they're all meeting for therapy, or something. And who even is this Emma? Does she have any non-thought out characteristics?
Man. I need to hold my horses. This is only the intro part 1.

During this therapy group session, why didn't any of the other characters encourage or sympathize? They kind of went right down the line of people telling their stories. Were there any reactions? Or was it just dead silent?

I can't complain about the characters because haha, they're supposed to be horrible characters. I might have a bit of an issue with Fangirl though I'm acting like one right now because she doesn't really seem like a fan girl. What's she fangirling about?

I'm curious about the princess and the knight. I didn't get to hear their story and they didn't come in 'til later, so I don't quite know what's going on with them as well as the others.

Other than that, I found this very light-hearted and fun to read. I love these characters already, though they don't seem too deep, and I have no idea where you're going with this, but it looks great so, I'd love to know when the next part comes out. ;)

----
My apologies for all those rambles in that so-called review. Hopefully, you found some of that helpful.
Let me know if I got something totally and completely wrong, or if you have a question. Have a fantastic day, and keep up your writing!
cheers!

Well, the lousy characters aren't really in good stories. They're more like bad characters in poorly done stories, which only makes the stories worse. So a good story really can't have a lousy MC in it, and a lousy story can't have a good MC in it. So if one is lousy, it brings the other one down. That's the basic idea. But yeah, I do need to specify.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Captain Cliche is probably my favorite character so far.
There hasn't been a lot of character development yet, so the fangirliness of Fan Girl hasn't come out yet. I need to add that in...
But there's still more story to come, and once I get the mess of ideas in my brain sorted out, it should make more sense! xD
