The world goes on without me. I don’t like it.

I want to be seen.

I want to be noticed.

I want to be free.

My entire life has never known a single thing outside of this house. I was born with a “condition” that can apparently seriously hurt others. I call bullshit. My mom takes care of me, but neither of us have had anything bad happen.

I saw a boy outside my window today. He was tall, fashionable, and good-looking. He looked like Edward from Twilight (except for the whole skin of a killer part and he looked more juvenile). We met gazes. I hid right away and I could feel my cheeks glowing vibrant red.

“Who are you staring at everyday?” Mom asked, bringing lunch to my bedroom. “Just a boy. We talked with each other a few times. His name is Peter.”

She warned me to not get too close to him, but I could see a bit of a smile on her face. She was probably glad that I wasn’t a total social shut-in, and that I still remember how to talk to people.

I received a message from Peter. I had my window open last night and in the morning, I spotted a paper airplane on the ground. Gosh how romantic!

I read the contents. It was a short love poem about our distance.

We may be just 6 feet apart,

But to me, you look like you’re staring from afar

Yes I know you’ll probably cringe, but I found it cute so who cares.

I wanted to send him back a letter. Then I remembered what my doctor told me, “Everything I come into contact with can be contaminated so you shouldn’t give things to others.”

How cruel this world is. The gift of giving has been taken from me, yet I receive from everyone else.

I’m a boy. Just a boy in this lonely world. Just a boy in his room all day, being lazy and unproductive. Just a boy who wishes he could travel the world. Just a boy who wishes to travel the country. Just a boy who wishes to leave this state. Just a boy who wishes to get out of this suburb. Just a boy who wishes to leave this street. Just a boy who wishes to exit his house. Just a boy who wishes for more than this bedroom… to be his world.

I shared my sentiment with Peter. The next day, he gave me a gift.

Again, through the window, came a paper airplane. This time, there was a USB stick taped to it. I plugged it into my computer, forgetting my cybersecurity 101–which is “Never plug in USBs willy-nilly you silly-billy” (do as I say, not as I do), and opening the contents of the USB. They were vacation photos. Peter had written a note alongside it, “Though you can’t travel the world, I wish to help you at least see it.”

How sweet he was for doing that. He probably forgot that the internet existed. But the photos were better than the internet. They didn’t feel just like pictures of fancy places I’ve never been to. They felt more like… memories. Imperfect yet pure, full of details and events, these were memories that Peter has made throughout his travels. And he was sharing them with me. It turns out Peter has traveled a lot. His dad is a co pilot. I didn’t even get a wink of sleep that night.

Who needs sleep when they’re in Paris at night?

It has been half a year since I first met Peter. It is now winter. I have a tacky mug with some christmas-themed pun on it next to my computer. I heard a call from outside. It was Peter.

He had four layers on. I could see his breath crystalize in the air. His ears were red and he had his mouth buried in his scarf. I really wanted to invite him in.

We had our typical conversation: How’s life, when are we getting out of this town, where’s the body, y’know, typical teenager stuff.

He dropped a bomb however. His family was moving to Brussels in Belgium. It was in three days. That’s Christmas! I didn’t know I was on the naughty list, but what a way to reveal it to me Santa.

I asked him to come by one last time on Christmas Eve.

It was Christmas Eve; 11:57 at night. 3 Minutes 'till Christmas. I had patiently waited for him to show up in front of my window but by now, it’s pitch black outside. Even the street lights couldn’t beat the harsh silence of a winter night.

At 11:59, I heard a knock from my window. I went up to the door and opened it. There was no one there.

Huh, that’s weird… I thought I heard a knock… wait, window?

I turned around and got jumpscared by a silhouette of a man. The moon illuminated their face a bit and I was able to make out… Peter?

I hurried over and opened the window.

“What are you doing here?”

“I’m here to tell you goodbye.”

“Well… You could be infected!”

“I talked to you for half a year, and I’m still fine aren’t I?”

“But-”

Before I could finish… he… leaned… in…

Afterwards, he left a note on my desk before spidermaning back out the window (except for y’know, the shooting webs and flying part).

I woke up in a cold sweat. What a weird dream that was. I turned my head to my desk and… it wasn’t a dream.

Five years have passed since those events happened. Peter is still fine, living out a wonderful life in Brussels, and I now have the courage to leave the house now.

I don’t even know what was real back then anymore. I can’t even remember the face or name of the doctor who first told me about my disease, and mom suddenly changed attitudes and allowed me to leave my house. I now have friends, and I get to travel outside my house. My world has gotten a little bigger.

Today’s a big day. I had to experience TSA security, get my dignity scanned along with my luggage, and now I’m finally on a seat, In an airplane.

I looked out the window and it was surreal to feel the ground no longer be ground but air. It was a long flight, but I was able to endure it. Leaving the airport, I heard a voice call out to me,

“Welcome to Brussels!”

Hello, My Friend!

Hiya, Toast!! It’s me, Raven, and I’m here to review this short story I happened across, using my Familiar method! Let’s dive right in, shall we?

What The Black Eyes See
~ A full analysis and breakdown

Aw, this story was such a romantic little adventure! It certainly was sad to see this narrator struggling with his life, confined in his room for a mysterious disease he may or may not have, but the budding friendship—soon to be more—with Peter made it all the more sweet! Let's get into the details though.

Plot and Pacing: Great! Nice pacing, no info-dumps. I do like how you hit each "milestone" of the narrator's life with Peter, up to that grand finale arriving in Brussels! By the end, I won't lie, I was hoping to know just a bit more about this mysterious illness, but as you will come to see, I also like the mystery surrounding it so...it works! lol

Descriptions and Setting: Cool! I think it was a very interesting angle to have this relationship develop from afar. It kind of gave me "love during pandemic" vibes, but without the...trauma XD I do think some more setting details would've fit very nicely here, something to give us a taste of the narrator's prison and how tired this room has become. You can really get a feel for characters and their situation through setting details. But I mean, that's one tiny thing! Take from it what you will.

Characterization: It really was a tragedy, seeing how this narrator spent his childhood. Clearly, he has this desire for connection, to explore, to meet people, and of course to be closer (literally and physically speaking lol) with Peter. All of that felt so relatable and watching him struggle through it, you just can't help but feel sorry for him. I mean, all those opportunities were restricted due to this perceived illness, even though we never see the symptoms, Peter isn't infected, and he takes on the world just fine in the end!

That's what made the mystery aspect of the disease interesting to me; it leaves me wondering, was this some sort of folie-à-deux or munchausen-by-proxy situation? Some godawful experiment, medical or psychological, from the doctor? Was it real, and he did just happen to recover? Or, in a morbid twist, is the onset just that slow and people are already infected?(gah—nvm that, mind of a horror fan XD) But seriously, the potential here! This sounds like the plot to some convoluted novella, I love it! XD

Grammar and Wording: As far as this goes, no complaints! Overall, the writing quality looks great!

Where The Dagger Points
~ Some nitpicks and little recommendations

Here is where I shove the tiny stuff, like the ever-annoying typos and such. And there's not much to put here at all! Let’s break it down…

Peter is still fine, living out a wonderful life in Brussels, and I now have the courage to leave the house now.

I feel like the second "now" was a bit redundant here. I think dropping either one of them would help this sentence read a bit cleaner.

That’s all! Great writing job ~

Why The Grin Widened
~ My reactions, theories, and favorite parts

...Well, I guess I spoiled my primary theory under "Characterization" already XD However! I will gladly share some highlights and reactions, both for fun and to show what stood out as I read!

My entire life has never known a single thing outside of this house. I was born with a “condition” that can apparently seriously hurt others. I call bullshit. My mom takes care of me, but neither of us have had anything bad happen.

Ooo, starting right off the bat with this aggressive, frustrated explanation of his situation. This immediately caught my attention and drew me into the story.

I wanted to send him back a letter. Then I remembered what my doctor told me, “Everything I come into contact with can be contaminated so you shouldn’t give things to others.”

How cruel this world is. The gift of giving has been taken from me, yet I receive from everyone else.

Aw!! The paper airplane method of communication was a cute detail in the story, and what a sad problem to have. Usually, empathy is derived from characters because they don't receive where they should, here it's the other way around. And indeed, it would suck to be unable to give, especially to someone you really care about and want to bond with...

Just a boy who wishes to leave this street. Just a boy who wishes to exit his house. Just a boy who wishes for more than this bedroom… to be his world.

I love how you wrote this whole section, slowly zooming in from the world abroad to his little room. It gives you a sense of scale, and really speaks to his ambition to explore, making the situation feel even worse than it is.

They were vacation photos. Peter had written a note alongside it, “Though you can’t travel the world, I wish to help you at least see it.”

AH, that's cute!!

They didn’t feel just like pictures of fancy places I’ve never been to. They felt more like… memories. Imperfect yet pure, full of details and events, these were memories that Peter has made throughout his travels.

Love this!! And agreed, narrator, it is different seeing photos from someone you know vs standard internet photos!

He dropped a bomb however. His family was moving to Brussels in Belgium. It was in three days. That’s Christmas! I didn’t know I was on the naughty list, but what a way to reveal it to me Santa.

I asked him to come by one last time on Christmas Eve.

*gasp* Oh no! Love the rise in tension here!

I can’t even remember the face or name of the doctor who first told me about my disease, and mom suddenly changed attitudes and allowed me to leave my house. I now have friends, and I get to travel outside my house. My world has gotten a little bigger.

And this again—it's a great ending, so happy, but at the same time...What is the purpose of this illness, who set this poor boy up like this?! I am still suspicious of it all... >.>

Our Mad Thoughts...

Overall, that was an awesome short story! Nicely done! :D

Thus concludes my review. To leave off, here are some inspiring quotes, courtesy of your resident Poe freak ~

"They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night."
"Words have no power to impress the mind without the exquisite horror of their reality.”
"I would define, in brief, the poetry of words as the rhythmical creation of Beauty."

Thank you so much for your detailed review! (To let you in on a secret, i originally DID have the horror route where the world gets infected) but i felt that that would be too tragic. Now, its totally up to the readers interpretation on what the illness was! Glad you enjoyed it and happy reviewing!

Hello, Buttered Croissant! Happy Viral Review Day! :D

Looks like it's time for a routine checkup! Your work looks a bit... Green. Let's see what's up with this work!

Check-in
This piece felt pretty surreal to me-- first off, the way it's told in fragments with timeskips makes me feel like I'm drifting through time instead of living someone's life, which is a really interesting effect (and possibly mirrors how the narrator wasn't really living life either). Also, it reminded me of the novel Everything, Everything-- more on that later.

Routine Checkup
You make good use of repetition, especially with the "I want to be seen. / I want to be noticed. / I want to be free." and the "I'm a boy. [...] Just a boy who wishes for more than this bedroom… to be his world." It emphasizes the narrator's feelings and helps the reader sympathize with him.

The Symptoms
I'm kind of unsatisfied with this section: "I can’t even remember the face or name of the doctor who first told me about my disease, and mom suddenly changed attitudes and allowed me to leave my house." Why would his mom suddenly change mindsets like that? Why was he kept in the house for long if he doesn't infect others? I'm super curious and would appreciate an explanation :p
An example from Everything, Everything (note: has spoilers!)

Spoiler
In that novel, it's revealed that the main character never had the disease all along, and her mother lied to keep her close. So the "disease" is a major part of the plot twist.

Speaking of curiosity, I also wonder what was in the note >.>

The Treatment
I think the short story could benefit from asking some "why" questions. For example, why did the doctor tell them about that condition if it's false? Plus the questions above.

Universal Healthcare
Another thought: I like how the narrator seems thoughtful sometimes (like with the "How cruel this world is. The gift of giving has been taken from me, yet I receive from everyone else.") and just a silly guy at others (like with the tacky mug with a pun). Anyways, thanks for sharing this story, and I hope you have a great day/night! =D
