Ky was sitting in a dark room, crouched behind a stack of feed bags, a blanket over her head. She was vaguely aware of Talia’s presence, somewhere off to her left, but she was more focused on the shouting coming from the front room. Her right hand tightened on a dagger, waiting for the time to strike.
A moment later the blanket disappeared and she was staring up into the sneering face of Lieutenant Borrond Mikaelson. He grabbed her left arm and yanked her in the air. Her father’s instructions echoed in her ears: don’t let anyone take you away. She took a deep breath, steeling her nerves, and wildly swung the knife at him.
Her stomach fluttered as the blade sank deep into his shoulder. He howled in pain and slammed her into the wall again and again and again, making her head ache as she –
Ky landed heavily on the ground with a groan. She spluttered on a mouthful of hay, squinting up at her supervisor as he stood over her, hand still on the hammock he’d just tipped her out of. “Get up!”
“Hey, Broer,” she coughed, voice gruff as she rubbed her face.
“Don’t you ‘hey Broer’ me,” he snapped. “You should have been up feeding the horses half an hour ago.”
“Apologies,” Ky murmured, pushing herself to her feet. “I’ll do better next time.”
“Yeah, yeah, sure you will, you bum,” Broer said, waving away the apology.
Ky stretched her back, but stopped mid-motion as she felt her underclothes slipping down her abdomen. She looked down and saw the tail sticking out under the hem of her tunic. She grabbed it and hastily tucked it back up under her shirt, eyes snapping towards Broer’s face to see if he’d seen it.
“Once you’ve finished with the feeding, get the King’s mount ready.” He didn’t seem to have noticed. She swallowed hard. “He’s got a friend arriving soon and they’ll be going out for a mid-morning ride before lunch.”
“Yes, sir,” Ky answered, fisting her hand and standing stiffly to keep the clothes from falling any further down her abdomen.
“Do it quickly,” Broer ordered, striding out of the little stall she called a room.
“Yes, sir,” Ky answered promptly.
The instant the curtain fell back into place over the doorway she yanked her tunic up and set to work. She untied the length of cloth she always wore, and tightly tied it off around her chest once more. She wrapped the tail around and around her torso, then pulled her tunic back down straight, and gave herself a pat.
Her chest was hard, and she couldn’t see any lines to betray that her chest was only artificially flattened. She ran her hand through her short mane of hair, knocking stalks of hay out of her matted knot of blonde, as she walked into her boots. She shoved her feet into the boots and kept walking, forcing her feet to find their places inside without bending to untie her boots.
That was too close of a call for comfort.
She’d need to be careful to double-check her binding was tight before falling asleep from now on. If Broer had been a little more observant, and cared to ask questions, she really would be in a bad spot. She could talk herself out of trouble for oversleeping half an hour – it’d be impossible to explain a false identity away with excuses.
Ky walked into the hallway, ducked into the tack room to grab a few buckets, and then hurried outside to the water trough. She knelt next to it and splashed her face with water, washing the sleep away, and then dipped the buckets into the trough. If only dreams were as easy to wash away as the sleep.
The day of her abduction was always one of her most frequent dreams: sometimes it was about when she’d stabbed Borrond, sometimes when she’d discovered that Borrond had stabbed Father, other times about when she’d first been brought to the castle. But it always left her feeling unsettled, and worried about Father.
She made several trips back and forth between the stable and the water trough, trying to rationalize her way to peace.
Father was fine. He’d only gotten stabbed in the shoulder – same as she’d managed to stab Borrond, and the Lieutenant had recovered in a matter of weeks. With the help of the Healer, Father would also have recovered quickly. And she was sure the other men of the town were caring for him well, now that she wasn’t there to help him on their farm.
Mr. Myrond, their town butcher, always showed concern for their wellbeing. Each year Ky would help him during the calving season, often spending the night in his barn with newborn calves, to ensure they stayed warm and fed and survived the harsh weather. When it was time to harvest the crops, Myrond would bring his kids, Kyan and Talia, to her farm and help her get the food stored away for the winter.
And then there was Mr. Drakan, the town black smith. In the winter, when it was too snowy to garden, Ky would help him cut and stack firewood to use in his forge throughout the year. And in return he’d ensure that their tools were in prime condition for her to use during the growing season.
There was no doubt Mr. Myrond and Mr. Drakan had stepped up and ensured that Father was well taken care of, after she’d been abducted by the soldiers and brought to the castle. It’d been well over two years at this point. He was probably better off with their help than he ever was with hers. They’d actually be strong enough to lift Father in and out of his wheeled chair, instead of having to wrestle him into bed each night, like she’d had to.
Ky watered all of the horses, then dumped a scoop of grain into the King’s mount, and went to gather the grooming materials. The king rode a majestic black stallion named Zivyn that stood nearly as tall as Ky did herself. She started grooming while Zivyn was still eating, meticulous in her work.
She brushed every inch of his coat, removing the dead hair and old sweat, and then quickly rubbed him down with a light oil that made the hair shine in the sunlight. She carefully combed all the knots out of Zivyn’s mane, then wove the hair together in tiny braids. Finally, she saddled and bridled him, triple-checking to ensure that the girth was good and tight.
Ky stepped back and looked him over, nodding approvingly as she stroked his muzzle, enjoying how soft the skin felt under her knuckles, despite his bristles. She turned as Broer suddenly filled the doorway to the stall. “Get this horse out to the courtyards.”
“Me?” Ky asked, startled. She’d been forced to take Zivyn directly to the king a few times in the past, but for the most part she was able to talk her way out of having to deliver his mount. She didn’t like having to interact with King Makata directly.
Broer gave her a dangerous look, silently daring her to argue.
“Yes, sir,” she answered tensely.
“Do it now.” He disappeared as quickly as he’d materialized.
Ky led Zivyn into the hallway, draping the reins over her arm as she walked towards the courtyard, knowing fully well that he’d stay right at her shoulder whether he had the bridle on or not. No one dared put the king on any horse that wasn’t perfectly behaved. She still had no idea how they’d managed to get a stallion so thoroughly domesticated, but he was the best trained horse she’d ever laid eyes on.
Ky ran her fingers through her hair, trying to work out as many tangles as she could in the time she had, lamenting that she hadn’t had time to run a comb through it. She tucked her undershirt in as best she could as she was walking, smoothed her thread-barren tunic down, checking yet again to ensure that her binding wasn’t visible, and made a final attempt at patting her hair down flat.
It was getting too long again.
Ky always made sure to keep her hair cropped short, to aid in her masculine façade. It’d never occurred to her before she cut it, however, how irritating it was to have to trim the hair every few weeks to keep it from growing out too long. It was still better than the long hair she used to have. It didn’t weigh her down nearly as badly.
Ky grabbed the reins properly as she rounded the corner of the stable, putting on a show of dignity as she went to present Zivyn to Makata. She straightened her shoulders and took even, dignified steps, before realizing that the only people outside were other servants.
Ky gazed around curiously, trying to take in everything she could about the inner courtyards. She wasn’t allowed in here often. Directly in front of her was a small stone deck that led to two massive doors that’d been painted green and led into the palace. At the end of the deck were two large gargoyles that glared down at her with their stony snarls. The ground under her feet was high-quality cobble that was kept immaculate.
To both the left and the right the palace stretched out for what seemed to be an eternity, rising up so high in the air Ky wondered how it didn’t come tumbling down at the slightest hint of a breeze. Behind her was an even taller wall, patrolled constantly by soldiers. She peered up into the guard towers at the corner of the wall, wondering if the men up there could actually see anything from their lofty vantage point, or if they were all slow-moving blurs on the ground so far below, like tiny ants.
On her level, just to the left, was a carriage painted navy blue. It was hitched to two gorgeous dapple geldings, which stood with their heads drooped in exhaustion. She wanted to take them to the stables for a good rub-down and grain, so she could pat them and tell them what good boys they were, but it wasn’t time for that yet.
The coachman was still watching them.
He was one of the largest men Ky had seen in her life. He was tall enough he could see over the top of the carriage without straining, and his arms seemed as big around as her torso was. He was bigger even than Mr. Myrond, which Ky hadn’t thought was possible. His skin was a rich brown, contrasting sharply with the sky-blue tunic he wore. He was standing next to the carriage, holding a third horse that wore an elaborate saddle.
Ky looked back towards the palace as she heard the doors swing open, just in time to see King Makata walk outside, surrounded by a group of people. The servants in the group instantly scattered to their respective roles, the soldiers hemming him in safely, as he walked next to a man Ky didn’t recognize.
Ky stepped forward and clucked to Zivyn, making him turn horizontal to the stone platform, then carefully reached her hand up to hold his neck still so the king could mount at his leisure once he reached them. She stared straight down at her boots, like she was supposed to, waiting for the royals to approach.
“So, Aleth,” Makata said. “This one is mine. I assume you brought a suitable mount for yourself?”
“Indeed, I did,” the other man answered.
Ky glanced up at them, peering around Zivyn’s forehead, using his head to hide her own face. She couldn’t take a chance of Makata recognizing her from that audience he’d had with her when she was first brought to the castle, before she’d assumed her male persona. He looked essentially the same as he had – his hair starting to become streaked with gray, and face a bit more creased, but the smug arrogance in his eyes burned as strong as ever.
“However,” Aleth continued. He was well-dressed, wearing a hunter green tunic that was tailored to fit his body perfectly. “I seem to have forgotten my riding spurs in my chest. Please excuse me.”
“Of course,” the king said amicably.
Ky’s gaze drifted down to his feet. The king wasn’t wearing spurs, of course, but Zivyn didn’t need anything but the slightest of pressure to respond to instructions. Aleth wore fine leather boots that were pressed with intricate designs. She glanced back towards his face, and felt her heart lurch as her eyes locked on Aleth’s gaze. She quickly dropped her own gaze back towards the ground.
Aleth stepped down from the platform and patted a large chest on the back of his carriage. “Could I borrow one of your servants to haul this to my room? I only brought Tadaaki, and he’s got my riding mount.”
“Of course!” Makata said.
Ky started as Makata stepped down from the platform and took the reins from her hands. He never took the reins from her before he was comfortably seated on Zivyn’s back. Having the king mere inches from her made her heart race.
“Think this one will be able to lift it?” Makata asked, gesturing lazily at Ky.
“That is just the one I was hoping you’d pick,” Aleth said with a slight smirk, eyes boring straight into Ky’s soul as she glanced back at him.

SHADY SURPRISE! ehehehehe also I totally thought this was going to be a sci-fi story with the name, just because lol, but I like the idea of another fantasy story! I hope this is going to spur you to start writing on this one again XD because you don't have enough stories at this point, right?? Let's begin
Lots of past participles here (I think, I haven't learned anything english since high school lmao), and it's kind of a boring first paragraph, right? I like punching things, and even sitting there waiting can be punchy. Also, you're starting this with a dream? That's such a cliche, Shady! Also, hiding under a blanket is weird, and makes me think the dream is child-like. Hmm. It sure raises a lot of questions but also dreams are a pretty cheap way to garner intrigue, and it's like, the easiest way to do so. I know your awesome writing, and you can do so much better
~Seeecret tail, Secret taaail~
Secret girl? See, there's the intrigue I was talking about!
An easy pit to fall into for a lot of writers is the repetition of something that just happened through the character's stream of consciousness, inner monologue, or thoughts, and oftentimes it can reduce the impact of something because it shoves the idea down the reader's throat which completely erases any intrigue. Sounding familiar? Because it's familiar to me when I reviewed BtD xD The intrigue was there and completely awesome and I felt awesome because I deduced it, which is what you want as a writer. And then the feeling vanished because of Ky's internal monologue. You could easily say:
"She would have to be more careful before she slept."
and we would get the same message but the writer let us readers stay in the know (keeping that dramatic irony that we know something that other characters don't know feeling high) and feeling like we're detectives. Most readers don't need the information told to them until it's revealed to other characters (naturally, not info dumpy).
Why have a dream and then reveal what the dream is in the same chapter? And, that's not even beginning to talk about how it's the first chapter. Also, I kinda skimmed the next six or seven paragraphs because it's all info dump. I want the mystery here, I really do, but I feel like there's multiple mysteries that don't have nearly enough intrigue that they should, in my opinion. I gotta be honest, I'm not nearly as hooked on the kidnapping as melli was below (I skimmed her review aha) because I felt like it was already explained (or, "explained") to me in the first chapter, when it doesn't have to. I'd be completely fine if we got scraps of the kidnapping in the first chapter and the rest of it is just Ky doing her normal chores before she meets the king. This story was written after BtD, so I'm going to be looking more for plot threads that are put in the beginning to give that mystery and the larger story here, because I know that was a weak point in BtD. Your characters are already strong, right off the bat, but you've had strong characters before with no where to take them. I'm also going to be comparing it to BtD because I reviewed it basically all RevMo xD so, sorry in advance. But, onto the next chapter!
Shady!

I've finally arrived
ANOTHER STAB LADY??? YES PLEASE
I reread this a couple times and,,, definitely misunderstood this as her having a literal tail, which when CTRL+F I saw Jabber already mention it so I will,, leave that for you haha.
SHE STABS AND SHE'S A STABLEHAND I already love her!!
yes I can,, see how that could provide some challenges.
okay so I have to applaud you on this first chapter, not even having read the entire thing, because I ALREADY want to know what happened to her father and who she is and why she's hiding her identity. You've given me an EXCELLENT hook to sink my claws into right out of the starting gates and I am IMMENSELY pleased. very, very good <3
I'm,,, a little confused about this part? You go from talking about the "other men" of town caring for her father, but then the line "Mr. Myrond, their town butcher, always showed concern for their wellbeing" which would make me think you mean the men, but your follow-up is to talk about calves/cows, which hasn't been brought up before, so I'm,,, not entirely sure what you were trying to get across here.
(upon further consideration,,, unless you mean that they are the other men of town that are caring for her father?)
I know what you meant but the way it reads is kinda funny lol
and yet, you never know who could be watching :eyes:
characters win my automatic love if they care about horses like this so anyway I love Ky.
yesss, gimme that description <333
aleth,,, sounds,,, familiar,,,, I'm gonna have to go back and stalk through your other two novels now
HOW VERY SUSPICIOUS OF HIM???
I am,, very rusty at reviewing so I hope you will excuse that most of this is mindless commentary but!!! I'm very excited because this first chapter was already very engaging and easy to read through!!! You've come so far and you've improved so much it's lovely to see and have read previous works of yours and to be here now :')
Anyway!! I will hopefully be back soon?? But until them, keep up the good work!!
I hope you have a wonderful time <3
AHHHhh Scribs! You have no idea what a lurch of sheer giddy JOY ran through me at getting this notif! Thanks so much for the review, fren <3
As always, super helpful, while also being thoroughly entertaining throughout!
I... don't think? Aleth has been introduced before this, but honestly my characters are all up in my head rattling around and bumping into each other all the time, so it's possible. I /am/ planning a cross over into Jerica's story and peripherally into Rana's, but I'm fairly certain I haven't written those in anywhere yet. Gut assumption is you're thinking of Aerik or Aldik, because I apparently have a Thing for naming powerful male characters similar A names lol
<333
no he hasn't! I am probably just mixing him up with Aerik or Aldik lol
I like it
Hi! The reviews below already went over many of the things I thought, but I figured I would mention a few other questions I had. So, Ky was abducted, and presumably, that had something to do with her arrival at the castle. Was she abducted tobe taken to the castle? Is that considered normal? Or maybe she's hiding from him...
I couldn't find any grammatical errors or nitpicks. Your style is both easy to read and captivating, which I really like.
Also, she mentions that she had long hair in the past, before she took on a "male persona." She also makes it sound like she was taken into the castle as a girl, then disguised herself as a boy after she got there. Didn't anyone notice that one of the girl servants was replaced by a boy? Or if, as Jabberhut said below, she was imprisoned, she would have been hunted for. I feel that, realistically, there would be a way to track the people who work on the castle grounds/are imprisoned.
I know that this is the first chapter, and that more will be revealed in later chapters. I just thought I'd point these things out.
I also really, really like the names you picked. They sound original and are mostly easy to pronounce, but there was one I didn't quite get. How do you pronounce "Zivyn?"
Please tag me for the next chapter when it comes out!
Keep writing,
Mira
Hey @Miraculor77 I definitely didn't get a notification for this review >.> But thank you so much for it! <3
Zivyn = Ziv-en, where the "Ziv" rhymes with live (as in "What a life to live" not as in being alive lol)
And yes, she came as a girl, and later snuck into her role as a stable boy. I've got a plan for how to reveal that, and hopefully, it'll all make sense once I do ^.^
I think I have a vague idea of how that happened... but I'm excited to see it in the next chapters.
I'll have to read the next two chapters soon
omg this is SO intriguing and I want to read more immediately.
)
I feel like we get a really good glimpse into Ky's background, which is such a huge start because now all I want to do is keep reading and piece it all together. Why was she abducted?!? And if her father was left alive, then I would presume she was the sole objective of this raid party. Is it because of her unique features that sets her apart from the rest? Is she a powerful entity that the kingdoms want in their arsenal??
And I assume King Makata is the leader behind said raid party as she was brought to the palace before him, especially since she has a lot of reservations about the king. Did she manage to escape his imprisonment only to be living under disguise in the palace stables? Or is she living a double life? IT'S SO MYSTERIOUS AND INTRIGUING.
Also, I would totally love to know what her tail looks like. Is it a rat tail? That would be pretty easy to hide. If it's bushy, though, hoofta. I imagine her tunic must be an extra size up or something to hide the bulging fluff on her backside. ;_;
I'm also gathering that perhaps Ky is not quite as practiced with the whole disguising thing, at least with the chest bindings. She seemed to have to remind herself to double check her bindings as if still adjusting to new habits. That or she just got so used to the habit that she doesn't even think about it anymore and, therefore, is reprimanding herself for being careless.
We do get a good feel for her love of horses, finding a sort of peace with caring for the animals. Perhaps this is why she doesn't run off on her own? She finds solace in the stables while also having food and a place to sleep, despite being under constant pressure of the king's radar. But the way her interest latched onto Aleth's carriage horses was an awesome way to emphasize her interest. I imagine her love of horses or animals will come into play later! (I'm sure it has something to do with her having a tail...
It's interesting we don't see the two kings cracking jokes or anything like that, so they either remain very formal in public or really aren't that close of friends -- just a friendly royal alliance. They certainly don't seem to fazed by the other's actions or words though, so they know each other well enough. The way Makata just shoved Ky forward as a servant offering didn't do anything for Aleth, though he was distracted with his pleasure at the choice of servant. Makata is so gruff. and rude. >:[ KY'S A PERSON TOO. I wonder if Makata treats all his servants so briskly!
I like how Aleth is introduced here because he seemed like an innocent friend at first, but this segment ends with such a GREEDY stare at Ky. It's so disconcerting and intriguing. Does he know who she is? Or does he know WHAT she is? And what are his intentions with her? If he knows, does he weant to kidnap her himself?? POOR THING JUST WANTS TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE, PEOPLE.
I'm not sure why Aleth only had one servant with him, unless he meant just to the courtyard and the rest of his staff was inside the palace already. It seemed strange that he only had one servant at his disposal. Though this could also be an outright lie as he hoped to get Ky into his circle somehow.
The worldbuilding details were really nice. They didn't feel overbearing and really complemented the story well so that it all felt natural. This is clearly the world she lives in, and it operates in a very natural way. I like the details mentioned regarding the kings' clothing and possessions, emphasizing how they stand out among the stable background, while also the palace stands so enormously and proudly above everything and everyone. It really put a lot of it into perspective so quickly that I rather enjoyed imagining the courtyard in my head!
I'm hoping next chapter we get a better glimpse into Ky's personality. Now that we've got such a huge grasp on her background, we can start piecing it together with her character and how she acts or what she believes in. She clearly has a strong attachment to her father, which is already a great start in trying to understand her way of thinking. I look forward to seeing what kind of goals she has or will have, and also what this Aleth guy wants with Ky. WHAT DOES HE WANT WITH KY?? I don't know if I trust him. :[
I look forward to reading more!! <3
Thank you so much for the review! <3 Super helpful, as always!
One point of clarification... this is totally my bad and I'll go and edit it lol but she doesn't have a real tail. I meant like, she wears a length of cloth that's shaped like a scarf around her chest to bind it. And she ties off one end, and then wraps the rest of the cloth around herself several times and then tucks the end of that into the binding. That cloth came undone and unwrapped itself and the "tail" of the cloth was peaking out under the tunic.
I see why the way I phrased it makes that confusing and I'll fix it ^.^ Just wanted to clarify that she is fully human lol
LOL woops! Thanks for clarifying that. I see how I made that mistake while reading, but it makes perfect sense the other way too. Fickle English, I guess!
Hello there! I wanted to give a few thoughts on this first chapter of a brand new story! ^^
Already from the start, we have a curious insight into who Ky may be. The fact that her father warned her to not be taken away is an interesting thing to go over. Of all things, why does that have the most importance? Hmm.
Broer seems like a fellow employee, or at least higher on the work scale than Ky certainly is. Thank goodness he's not very observant though, I imagine a tail would be something hard to keep hidden, but maybe she's got a few tricks up her sleeve.
Oh, so maybe that's why her father warned her to not be kidnapped/captured because that secret would be exposed quite easily. Or just because no one wants their daughter captured in the first place, which I understand.
I like getting the easy transition from her mundane actions of cleaning to her thinking about her father. It's a little bit long for Ky to just be thinking over in her mind, but I think it works fairly well.
Back to working which brings a horse, so that makes me happy. Also sounds like a pretty horse, so whoo. The carriage description is nicely written out, so I've got a good idea of how Ky approaches where the Makata and Aleth stood or waited.
Also, the binding mentioned before makes more sense as well that Ky has adopted a masculine appearance for the sake of remaining secret/hidden I think, so hmm alright. Does Aleth somehow recognize her, or know her from before? Oooh. This raises far more questions.
As per a summary, I don't like doing grammar reviews, but I will try to gather all of my thoughts into one thing. <: Ky sounds like a good, solid character, showing true worry over her father which I can relate to, and taking good care of innocent animals. Broer (literally I think of a "bro" as per his appearance) is meh, but I figure he's not a main character, while Aleth and Makata already make me nervous for poor Ky's sake.
For this next chapter, getting a larger look into this world/land would be helpful, or just showing more of what Ky does/how she lives on a daily basis, especially with maybe a bit of a hint as to how she was in that situation with stabbing someone in the first place, but that can certainly be revealed later. Overall, I think this is a strong start to a fantasy novel, and it seems very promising.
Please tag me for the next chapter! ^^
