Aleth fell into a silence as they walked, leaving Ky to fret with her own thoughts as she followed close behind him. There was literally nothing that Ky wished to “chat” with Aleth about. Not one single thing.
As they turned the corner to the last hallway, Ky saw another man walking towards them. She brightened slightly as she realized it was Alcan. He’d been the stable boy before she came, and made her transition bearable, before he left for his new position as a castle boy. Alcan was one of the two true friends she’d made in her time here, and he could make any day better, just by being there. She was glad for his bright smile as he approached.
He dipped his head respectfully as he passed, greeting Aleth. “Sir.”
He kept walking, never slowing his pace as he reached back and clapped Ky on the shoulder. She appreciated the sense of courage that it brought with it; the assurance that she still had someone on her side, in all this mess.
Aleth glanced back at the exchange, but didn’t comment. He pushed the door to his bedroom open, then gestured at the bench where he wanted the saddle to be placed. Ky walked over and set the saddle down as Aleth sank to his knees in front of his chest and began digging through the items within.
Ky stood behind him respectfully, hands clasped in front of her body. Her gaze wandered around the room. It was a spacious area, with three large windows in front of her, opposite the door to the hall. To her left was a massive bed with ornately embroidered blankets and pillows arranged neatly on top. To the right was a small desk covered with papers.
Ky glanced back at Aleth. His back was still turned as he bent over his chest. Her gaze traveled back towards the desk. He had numerous letters lying on the desk. She focused her attention on the one closest to her and was surprised to see the Atrayaian crest at the top. She glanced at the others and saw that he had letters from many countries – Lytias, Alheren, Lutalya, Nykeria, Atraya, and Griveka – although they were all written in the Trade Language. It seemed like he had colleagues in nearly every country.
“Do those interest you?”
Ky started, snapping back to attention as her eyes locked back on Aleth. He was standing now, next to the chest, but he quickly closed the distance between them in a few strides. He crossed his arms, standing uncomfortably close, as he glared down at her with narrowed eyes.
She wet her lips. “I was looking at all the different crests, sir.”
“Indeed.” Aleth stepped over to the desk and gestured for her to follow him.
Ky stopped on the opposite side of the desk from him, looking down at the letters. There was one from a lord in Atraya asking for financial support to hire soldiers. Another from someone in Nykeria, telling him what was happening in their court.
Aleth pulled out a sheet with all the crests stamped on them and handed it to her. “They’re quite unique.”
“Yes, sir,” she agreed, looking down at the page.
“This one is Lytias,” Aleth said, gesturing to the one of a python coiled around a scepter. He moved his finger to one of a bundle of roses on top of a shield. “Alheren.”
He moved his hand to point at the most interesting one on the sheet. It was a magnificent dragon with intricate scales, a small flame erupting from its mouth. “Nykeria.”
Aleth briefly pointed to each of the remaining crests, naming them, and then fell silent as she absorbed the information. She recognized several crests from the carriages she’d put up when Makata entertained international guests.
“Ky, hand me the letter from the Alherian Lord Elstan.”
Ky glanced down at the table. She quickly saw the letter, nearest her edge of the table, on the corner. Leikos Elstan, signed next to a bundle of flowers and a shield. She grabbed the letter and held it out to Aleth, finally looking up.
He didn’t take the paper for a long moment.
His suspicious gaze locked on her eyes again, cold and calculating as ever. She hesitated, mentally kicking herself for being so stupid. Stable boys couldn’t read. She knew that. She should not have known which letter he was referring to, and she should have been smart enough to realize that before being stupid enough to tip her hand like that. “Can you read?”
“No, sir,” she lied quickly. “I just looked at the crest.”
Aleth took the letter, still staring her down, obviously not convinced. “Funny. There are four other Alherian crests in front of you… and yet you picked the right one, on the first try.”
Ky glanced down at the table, mouth dry. He was quite right. She stepped away from the table, refusing to look back up to meet his gaze. “It was the first one that caught my eye, sir.”
“Mm.” Aleth tossed the letter down on his desk, then held out the tub of cream to her. “Here’s the cleaner. Rub it into all of the leather.”
“Yes, sir,” Ky answered, taking it from him and silently going to work. She was as meticulous with the saddle as she was the horses, careful to clean each and every crevice in the design pressed into the leather, but also working as quickly as she possibly could.
“So.” Aleth sat at the end of his bed, ankles and arms crossed, as he watched Ky working on the saddle. “Makata said that he brought children ages nine to fourteen to his palace from sectors nine and twelve, two years ago.”
Ky swallowed hard, heart beating so hard she could feel it reverberating in her stomach.
“He sent the girls to his harem, and the boys to start training as barracks boys or recruits in his army,” Aleth said. “Is this how you remember things happening?”
“Yes, sir,” Ky answered gruffly, studiously avoiding his gaze. She rubbed the leather vigorously. If it’d been made of a lesser material, her anxious hands might have broken through the very thing she was meant to clean.
“Then how is it that you came to be a stable boy?” Aleth questioned. “Shouldn’t you be in the military now?”
Ky swallowed again. She’d have taken the military over the option she was actually supposed to be in now. She’d have even taken the military over her current situation, in this very moment, in this very room. Her head was starting to feel light. She forced herself to take a deep breath and gather her thoughts before she responded. She had to remember the details perfectly, to make her story as leakproof as possible.
“They needed a replacement boy in the stables,” Ky answered, keeping her gaze fixed on the saddle before her. “I was the only boy from my township who knew how to tend horses. I guess they figured it made the most sense to train the farm boy in the stables, rather than send me to the barracks and train another boy from scratch, since I already had the basics down.”
“I see,” Aleth answered thoughtfully. “And what happened to your predecessor?”
“I don’t know, sir,” Ky lied. The last thing she wanted was to have to name her friends to Aleth. “I think he might have gotten moved into the palace, but it didn’t seem like my place to ask.”
“Of course.” Aleth was silent for a moment. “I suppose I can make it my place to ask, then. I’ve got a fair bit more leverage than you.”
Ky glanced at him again. She didn’t think her stomach could feel any sicker than it already did, but every statement he made brought on that much more queasiness. She forced herself to take a deep breath. “Yes, sir… I mean, if it matters to you that much. He was just a stable boy.”
“And what was his name?”
Ky kept her gaze fixed on the saddle. “I don’t quite recall, sir.”
“You sure about that?”
Ky didn’t need to look up to hear the challenge in his voice – but she did anyway. A mistake. The edge in his voice was nothing compared to the way he set his jaw; brows drawn as he glared down at her.
“Yes, sir,” Ky answered, looking back to her work. “Apologies, sir. I didn’t know him well, and it’s been a while.”
“I see,” Aleth answered slowly. There was an agonizingly long pause. Ky couldn’t seem to draw another breath past the tightness in her chest, her conscience screaming at her for the lie. It was a weak lie – pretending to forget. And yet, she knew that if she made up a name then that lie would be even easier to uncover. “No matter, I’m sure I can track him down just the same.”
Ky let out a silent sigh, keeping her eyes fixed on the saddle as she resisted the urge to cringe. She wished she could go find Alcan and warn him to watch his back, that Aleth was coming for him – and yet she knew the chances of bumping into him a second time in the same day were slim, and she couldn’t very well go poking around the castle looking for him without some other valid excuse.
“You have a partner, Ky?” Aleth asked abruptly, changing the topic.
“No, sir,” Ky answered, startled. She frowned at the saddle and scrubbed at the flap of leather in her hands furiously.
“And why’s that?” Aleth questioned, standing up to walk towards her. “You’re not bad looking. I imagine you’re sweet enough around people you’ll say more than two words at a time to. Never found anyone to strike your fancy?”
“I’m not really interested in romance,” Ky answered, standing. Her eyes flicked up to meet his gaze, but quickly returned to the saddle when she saw the look he was giving her once again. “Is this suitable to you, sir?”
Aleth stepped past her and silently evaluated her work for a moment, then nodded. “Excellent work, Ky. You can take this back to the stable.”
“Yes, sir.” Ky swooped swiftly and grabbed the saddle, retreating as quickly as she respectfully could.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Ky,” Aleth called as she reached the door.
Ky looked back at him. He wore the same infuriating, terrifying smirk that he’d given her nearly every time she glanced at him. She bit back another sigh. “Yes, sir.”

Shady!!
ky: I've suddenly realised I have nothing to talk about sir bye *yeets out of there*
aHA THERE'S THE GOOD A- MAN
also was definitely wondering if she really hadn't made friends for two years since arriving here but I'm glad that was cleared up here!AT LEAST SOMEONE'S GOT HER BACK but also not really even if it was a morality booster as he is still Leaving.
windows from which to escape from should this go sideways
perfect for stabbing.
I feel like if this guy was ever in an interrogation and had to torture someone to get information out of them, his method would just be completely disregarding someone's personal space until they revealed what he wanted to know.
I'm also very curious as to who Aleth is? Like, I could not care for this man at all, but he is friends with the king and has a lot of contacts everywhere. Is he a lord? Some kind of communications master? A relative of the king? It hasn't exactly been mentioned, save for that he's of higher station than Ky. It's definitely not an issue! I don't know if it's meant to be explicit at all or not yet.
Is the "Nykeria" still Aleth talking? Since dialogue from different people is usually split onto separate paragraphs (unless it's long or whatnot), I thought at first that it was Ky saying it. There's really no reason that this paragraph needs to be broken up like this if it is still Aleth talking.
also this is SUSPICIOUSLY domestic and calm right nowOOF
don't mind me complaining about the paragraph division again for a second, but since this paragraph is mostly referring to Ky and her actions, I would separate the "Can you read?" onto a new line (whether she add a dialogue tag or not would be your decision). It also would emphasise it more in a starker contrast, since it would be *long paragraph about how she goofed* *short, ominous "can you read?"*. If that,,, makes sense.
tldr; it's more dramaticwhyyyyy does he want to knooowwwwwww
mood, Ky.
OR YOU COULD NOT
One of the things I'm enjoying immensely is that Ky has such a distant personality? Especially from Rana or Jerica? I think I had mentioned that Rana and Jerica bled into each other in some ways and, at times, felt almost too similar, but you've done a good job of separating Ky from that! Aside from the lack of ability for like, politics or subtle machinations such as those (which I don't recall any of them being particularly skilled at), Ky is just... a quieter character, in general. She does what she needs to do, tries to keep herself down and out of sight, and she's haunted by something that is still, to this day, threatening her life. I'm really enjoying her personality (not to say I wasn't for Rana or Jerica, it's just different!).
This scene was a lot less charged/creepy than previous interactions between Aleth and Ky (not to say it wasn't at all, because he's a Gross Nasty Man) and I'm not sure whether to be like,,, oh good he's just pretentious and cocky for show, or whether to dread this because something worse might be coming? WHY IS HE SO INTERESTED IN KY DON'T YOU HAVE OTHER THINGS TO DO YOU SEEM VERY BUSY ALETH
also Alcan!! I hope we can see some interactions between him and Ky in the future! There has been a pretty consistent lack of friends for your leading ladies and it'd be really nice to see a soft, friendly relationship for Ky here xD
I think that's all I have for you today?? I'M VERY CURIOUS TO SEE WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT thank you for making reviewing easier for me again because you keep putting hooks out for me to latch onto every time I come back <333
I hope you have a wonderful time!!
hahahah <33
Thanks for the review! I'm so glad you've had time/motivation to give me such consisten reviews! It is the highlight of my days lol
omfg aleth no go away
I REALLY want to say Aleth knows she's a girl, but since he asked why she wasn't in the military and not the harem doesn't help me confirm that. XD YOU'RE TEASING ME. He could either KNOW she's a girl and is just being discreet about it [for now] or he legitimately thinks she's a boy.
HNNNNNNG I NEED TO KEEP READING MORE.
So I absolutely LOVE how you revealed the reading thing. Gosh, I was in LOVE with how you handled that. As soon as it said that Ky realized stable boys typically couldn't read, I was IMMEDIATELY NERVOUS FOR HER LIKE OGOD NO. And Aleth is SCARILY PERCEPTIVE. Just this whole bit played out so freaking well. I don't know how Aleth had letters strewn across the desk if he's only just arrived to the palace, but maybe I've been led astray as to whether or not he's visiting and only returned home. Perhaps the letters were just stacked neatly with his travel stationery?
It's also interesting to note that Ky can read! She lived in a small village and was still taught to read! I think that really builds on the self-sufficiency of her home. It makes sense considering they want their people to rely on only themselves and what's offered to them in their village.
Gosh, I just freaking love how well you worked out that letter scene, man. Aleth asked all the right questions, and Ky was absolutely lucky to be able to lie herself out of it, and the situation just played out so WELL and so CLEANLY. It had just the right amount of tension, just enough to keep me on edge and wondering if she was caught or not. It was just so well done. GUH!
Aleth is so freaking perceptive. It is SO scary how good of questions he's asking. 'Cause now he's asking about the previous stable boy, and I imagine this is due to the fact that new stable boys are trained by veteran stable boys. So in hindsight, Ky WOULD know who her predecessor was in a normal situation, so Aleth is asking what happened to him, what was his name, etc. And Ky is trying to make it clear that she was hired after the predecessor left, so she doesn't know him. But then Aleth caught her in her lie -- and left it alone. Aleth EVEN ASKED HER what his name was EVEN AFTER KY SAID that she didn't know what happened to her predecessor, like he KNEW he could catch her if he just kept asking questions anyway, even though it doesn't quite make sense that she'd know Alcan's name when she didn't know what happened to him in the first place.
The tug-of-war tension is SO INTENSE IN THIS CHAPTER I LOVE IT.
When Aleth asked if Ky was in a relationship, it totally caught me off guard and then IMMEDIATELY SICKENED ME. He is such a creeper! How much older is he? I don't remember if this was addressed, but I'm picturing him as a middle-aged man. Which makes it just even creepier.
Anyhoot, like. The topic change was so random that you could tell Aleth has ONE thing on his mind and it's like. CREEPER ALERT??
I really hope Alcan is okay. I haven't even met him, but you played him up just enough for me to want to protect Alcan. He sounds so cute and wonderful and I want him to be okay because clearly he is a kind of support that Ky needs in her life right now. ;_;
Hello! I actually caught a flight this morning, and my basically aunt but she’s my cousin was driving around like everywhere, so I finally have some free time right now. I read though this chapter earlier and I really liked it!
Let’s see. I’m very interested in learning more about how Ky landed here in the first place. From her getting snatched by that evil person in the flashback to the start of the first chapter, and her disguising herself as a boy, there is a large blank area that the reader knows nothing about! Despite the few months she’s been here, I doubt she’s really faced an inquiring mind quite like Aleth. With all of his interest in her, there’s gotta be something big going on.
Aleth does not seem like a dumb guy, so he’s picking up on everything Ky does and says, and what she doesn’t do or say. I like the detail of her realizing simple workers shouldn’t know how to read, which absolutely adds to the world building of this story, and is probably a big hint to Aleth despite her trying to play it off. I don’t quite think it’s for a nefarious reason, his interest in her, but it definitely has to speak to a larger problem, or at least I think so. Some weird part of me is saying that Ky reminds Aleth of her father.
Also, that brings me back to the whole start of this story and all the events that happened with Ky and her father. I wonder! I’m thinking Aleth will go talk with the newly castle dude and might learn some about her, which we will hopefully be privy to, while I’m rather nervous for her sake. Maybe it’s gonna be that he’s a good guy. I mean, the thing asking about if Ky had a partner did seem a little random, but eh, it suits Aleth and his weird tendencies.
I just don’t know what to expect! This is very interesting C:
**My Thoughts**
What the frick. Asking if she has a partner? Rude. Hey there, LZ here with another review! This chapter was great! A lot was discussed.
**Formatting and Grammar**
These were both fine! I didn't catch any grammar or formatting that seemed off.
**Punctuation and Capitalization**
Nothing wrong (again)!
**Plot**
The plot has developed since I first mentioned it. Now we know that Aleth has something to do with it, because he would of disappeared by now if he didn't. We also know that boys were supposed to go to war, but girls stayed, so something happened to make Ky dress like a man (correct me if I'm wrong)!
**Characters**
Ky: Like I've said before, she seems like a good person. Just a good person who lies a lot 9but I can't blame her)!
Aleth: WHAT A CREEP. You know when you really hate a character? I really hate this character. You write really well, and you wrote him as a really crappy person well.
**Quick Review**
No mistakes! But jeez, why is Aleth so weirddddd??
Keep on writing (I am so excited for Chapter 5)! Have a great 2020!
