Hi
It’s been raining here
Can I talk to you for a sec
Mom loved “Can I talk to you for a sec”
I walked down to the dock yesterday
Remember the dock?
And there was a duck there
Mom loved “And there was a duck there”
Yeah it was pretty close too
I didn’t want to scare it away
So I just kinda stood there
And thought
Mom questioned “And thought”
I wasn’t done >:(
I thought about how unafraid the duck seemed
It didn’t even flinch when I walked up
Which was weird bc normally the ducks get scared
But she just watched me
Mom loved “But she just watched me”
Yeah it was nice
And I thought about what she was thinking about too
I bet she was happy to see the rain
Mom laughed at “I bet she was happy to see the rain”
It was weird though
Bc she was the only duck
Like I couldn’t see any other ducks
She was alone
Mom disliked “She was alone”
Yeah :(
I just kind of smiled at her and then walked to the edge of the dock
And looked out at the lake
And I thought about
Things
But then!
Mom questioned “But then!”
I’m typing one sec
I hear this weird noise behind me
Kind of like flip flops going really fast
And I turn around and its the duck
She’s running like
Super eager
And then dives in the water
Mom laughed at “Super eager”
I’m kind of worried though
Mom questioned “I’m kind of worried though”
I never saw her come up
Mom disliked “I never saw her come up”
Maybe she did somewhere else I guess
Or maybe she’s still swimming underwater
Or maybe
Idk
I left after a while
I watched the bubbles
But
I never saw her again
It was weird
Anyways what time are you coming on Saturday?
9:00?
Mom liked “9:00?”
Oh great
Maybe we can go to the dock
Mom loved “Maybe we can go to the dock”
I have to go now
I have
Something
Looking forward to seeing you soon :)
Mom loved “Looking forward to seeing you soon :)”
I love yo
*you
Mom loved “I love yo”
Mom loved “*you”
Ok bye :)

This poem makes me very sad, is it supposed to make me sad, am I interpreting it correctly?
That being said, I love it. First off, it was already creative in the layout, and the way we get to read the text message between mom and her child. Even though we get to see such an intimate and private part off life, text messages, it is still pretty mysterious. With no real response from mom, even after "I love you, we're left wondering. Why doesn't she respond? How does the child feel that their mother is not reciprocating? But they still have a relationship because they have some sort of text interactions and in person interactions? I'm really curious to know more.
Aside from this story line, we also have the duck. At first, I was not too invested in the duck story, I was more worried about why we're not getting response from the mom, but then the mood shifts, and we're forced to pay attention. Clearly you picked this duck story for a reason, and it matters.
The mom never really acknowledged this duck mystery. She disliked that the duck was alone, and she disliked that the duck never came up. Then we have a blurb of texts about waiting for the duck and rationalizing what could have happened, and then the subject is changed. And mom only reacts to that subject change.
There's obviously a reason. I'm glad you don't tell us in the poem, definitely leaves us to interpret the story and think a little. I'm pretty invested now.
Thank you so much for the review! It was very helpful in seeing how my work is interpreted, so thank you so much!
This is a gorgeous poem - I also really enjoy the layout which I think is very creative, as is the whole concept.

I agree with the other reviewer that it's interesting how the mum only responds to the daughter, but never messages back. I wonder if this makes the daughter feel lonely? As far as the duck - I don't know how dark the story is but I'd probably have to think about it for a while to come to a deep conclusion.
Is it meant to represent the daughter's feelings at all?
Regardless of the deeper meaning, I think this is a beautiful poem - one I will for sure be thinking about for a while & trying to 'figure out' - and I'll definitely check out some of your other writing
Thanks for sharing
This was super sweet! I was a little sad and worried about the duck though. It's really good writing I felt like I could kinda feel the characters emotions and the presentation of the story through text was really creative! The limit of the mom only responding through the reaction things heightened the story in a really nice way. The mom and daughter (female?) seem to have a really close and wholesome relationship. I enjoyed this part a lot

This was a great read, it's raining where I am rn and it created a very nice mood to read this story.
I hope you have a good day full of warmth and coziness!
Thanks so much for the review! I%u2019m glad you enjoyed! I%u2019m curious (and you by no means have to answer this!) if you saw any deeper meaning besides the story with the duck; I%u2019m just trying to gauge how the poem comes off! Once again, thank you so much!
Yes I did. I didn't exactly know how to say exactly to say it but yeah. Tbh I still don't know how to explain it that's why I'm being a little vague.Like I haven't made up my mind yet. Was it supposed to have a deeper meaning?
Yeah it was%u2014 but no sweat if it didn%u2019t come across! I purposefully avoided hitting it on the nose because I did not want it to be too obvious, but I didn%u2019t want it to be too hidden. Thank you so much for your input!
