Bad Lights, Good Lights [Chapter 8.3]

“I wanted to tell you when the time was right,” Scarlet said, his unwavering voice irritating me. It seemed like him being exposed to keep a secret didn’t affect him even a bit. “I know I should tell you as soon as possible, but laying out all the information when we’ve just met for a little more than a couple of days would overwhelm you.”

I wanted to interrupt him by arguing about his reasoning, but I shut my mouth. I knew it wouldn’t be any good if I let my emotions controlled me further.

“It seems like,” Scarlet continued, “I’m wrong about that. You’ve repeatedly showed your enthusiasm over knowledge, your excitement to know more. I had the feeling you could handle all of this, but I admit, I wasn’t sure about it before. You were... fragile the first time we met each other.”

His words hit me. I was fragile at that time. I remembered crying because of Father, and seeing Scarlet made me think he might be the solution I had. And I had foolishly asked him to kill my father. I met him just for a few minutes and I already requested a personal wish. This wasn’t the time to ponder about that matter, though.

“I can handle it,” I said, folding my arms to show him I could embrace whatever he wanted to hurl at me.

“Oh, spare me the drama,” Mauveine said, floating a bit upward and downward. “It is not something that would affect our plan majorly.”

I realized that purple’s light presence, as well as Damon and the man, and I felt there were too many people here. I should’ve as well talked with Scarlet about this privately, but that wasn’t a luxury I had right now.

“Do you remember when I turned on the pipe in your toilet?” Seeing me nodded, Scarlet continued. “Well, that’s as far as my ability goes. In this human world, my ability is very limited. I can make weak gestures of telekinesis.”

I absorbed his information, and it dawned on me I had assumed he could kill people when we first met. I thought his manipulation on that pipe was just a minor act he could do; I thought he could do more. That was why I initially cooperated with him in this mission to save humankind—because I was afraid of what he could do to me. Right now, however, it seemed like he couldn’t do those stuffs I imagined he could do. “You really need me.”

“Yeah,” he said, floating side to side. “By manipulating my own energy to something similar to yours, I could synchronize with you, and that makes my ability stronger. That was why you could move that man to the wall when I alone couldn’t do it.”

I nodded slowly, my boiling anger calming down. What he said made sense. Mauveine was right; this information made me understand more about the the good lights, aseal, and didn’t give a huge impact to the plan we had right now. Scarlet shouldn’t keep this from me because there was no reason to do that. “You should’ve told me earlier,” I said, careful to make my voice softer as to not offend Scarlet.

“I should’ve,” he replied.

I turned to that man. “I guess we’re done here. You have nothing else about the bad light.” I shifted my attention to Damon. “We should go.”

Damon nodded—I was glad he understood arguing right now wouldn’t be the right thing to do—and I was about to move to the door when the man spoke up. “That’s not all the bad light said to me, you know,” he said. “For something you deem as evil, she really is honest.”

That got my attention. I stopped my movement, and looked at him. “What do you mean by that?” I said, my voice dripping with curiosity. This man sure knew how to hook me.

The man stood up confidently, brushing his stomach to remove whatever dust on his shirt. He smiled slyly. “Despite my refusal, I challenged her to convince me to help her.” He tilted his head. “Apparently, she thought explaining something that was disadvantageous to me would’ve won me. She was wrong, though—no one would’ve like to be manipulated unwillingly.”

Manipulated unwillingly? What’s he talking about? “Do you know what he’s talking about, Scar?”

Scarlet nodded.

I looked at the man, and finally I decided not to take his bait this time. If there was something else I should know, I would know it sooner or later. I could talk with Scarlet at the time and place that I wanted. I didn’t need someone who would lay all this out in the worst way ever. If the information was disadvantageous to me, I’d like to discuss it with those I trusted—with those I was comfortable with. This man reeked suspicion.

“My light knows it,” I said, emphasizing my light, and turning to Damon again. “I’d talk to him when and where I want. Thanks for the cooperation.” I paused. “Why are you here, anyway? Shouldn’t you be with others?”

The man looked away. “I forgot some stuffs. They told me to get the stuffs back here.”

I could sense he was embarrassed with his forgetfulness. I was satisfied by that a bit. “Well, you better do your job quick, or else they’d be angry with you.”

I went to the door, Scarlet at my side, Damon and Mauveine behind me. I opened it and let them to go through it first. Our trip here was short, and we didn’t find the axors like we wished we would, but the information I got in exchange for that made this trip worth it.

I was about to close the door when the man asked me the same question again. “Why do you despise us foreign workers, anyway?” His voice lacked the fiery it had before, and right now he seemed to be genuinely intrigued.

I could hear the unspoken Are you racist? Are you just a bad person? on the air, however. He must had a bad impression of me. I didn’t care, and decided to change my way of closing the door. “Not you business.” With a swipe, I made the door close itself, smiling when it produced a shocking knocking sound.

I turned to the others, and Damon, standing still, was looking straight at me. “You sure are aggressive. There’s no need to do that with your ability.” He started walking, and I followed him at his side. The lights had went into ourselves now that we were outside.

“I’m tired of his question.”

I walked beside him, and remembered how he acted back in there. He was surprisingly going along nicely with me. Maybe I would revise my impression on him. I thought of calling Imran or Sarah to see how they were doing, but decided not to do it, worried I would disturb them. Since we finished here early, they should still be looking around for the axors.

Hello again! Look at this I'm basically all caught up! (I'm going to save 9.1 until you have the rest of that chapter up so I can read them close together).

I didn't care for this part of the chapter as much. The first little chunk explaining the relationship more didn't do much for me. This is probably at least partially due to the fact that I typically don't do much with fantasy. Explanations about how things work in the world or in the magic system tend to bore me and I usually gloss over them. So, I'm not saying it's bad or that you should re-do it, but I'm not saying that you shouldn't :P

I'm not sure if this is the best time or place to have the conversation because it stopped the action and suspense you had going up until now. I'm not sure if it's information that we absolutely have to know in order for the world and the magic to make sense. All I can say is that I didn't really absorb it. However, that could be my own personal problem and I would consult with someone that deals with fantasy more than I do.

But the rest of this chapter, compared to everything else that has happened in this chapter, felt a bit anti-climatic to me. The speech at the beginning (even though it wasn't that long) stopped the action for me. And then they were on their way la-di-da. It felt a bit rushed there at the end, like the decision making wasn't as thought out and the conversations were cut short (I'll go into that more when I start quoting stuff).

I was also pretty surprised that the man just let these kids go. They broke into his home and attacked him then Merah is like, "okay we're leaving" and he's like "wait don't go. there's more I can say to help you." Why would he help them? Is he just afraid they're going to hurt him otherwise? They weren't exactly nice to him.... I would have thought he would want more retribution or that he would try to stop them before they left or he would at least threaten to get them and he just let them go.

I realized that purple’s light presence, as well as Damon and the man, and I felt there were too many people here. I should’ve as well talked with Scarlet about this privately, but that wasn’t a luxury I had right now.

Why does she have to know right now? Is it really so pressing and so important she can't wait until they get home?

I nodded slowly, my boiling anger calming down. What he said made sense. Mauveine was right; this information made me understand more about the the good lights, aseal, and didn’t give a huge impact to the plan we had right now. Scarlet shouldn’t keep this from me because there was no reason to do that. “You should’ve told me earlier,” I said, careful to make my voice softer as to not offend Scarlet.

“I should’ve,” he replied.

I think you could go a bit deeper into these thoughts. I'm not sure I understand why she was so mad that she didn't know this sooner. She has known about the lights for barely any time, why does she think she already knows everything about them? How would have knowing this information sooner benefited her in some way? What did she lose by not having this information? Why should have Scarlet told her about this earlier?

I was glad he understood arguing right now wouldn’t be the right thing to do

Who would be arguing, why are they arguing, and how does she know Damon is on board with not arguing?

“My light knows it,” I said, emphasizing my light, and turning to Damon again. “I’d talk to him when and where I want. Thanks for the cooperation.” I paused. “Why are you here, anyway? Shouldn’t you be with others?”

What's the man's reaction to her refusal to hear it from him?
Why does she turn to Damon and say that? Could she just think that? If she does say it, what's his response or his reaction?
Then I'm guessing she turns back to the man and says those last two lines? But why is she asking him that? Didn't they already establish that this is his house? He doesn't have to tell her what he's doing in his own house. Merah wanted to leave, why doesn't she just leave? Why open up more conversation with this guy she doesn't trust anyway?

I was about to close the door when the man asked me the same question again. “Why do you despise us foreign workers, anyway?” His voice lacked the fiery it had before, and right now he seemed to be genuinely intrigued.

I'm really confused about why he asked this again? I thought he already had an answer. She had a traumatic experience with these guys. I think I would rather have this conversation gone (it makes Merah look petty and rude and it's bringing up a small thing that was already discussed earlier) and have this chapter end with the internal monologue you had started before this little interjection. I think it would be nice to summarize in a way what they got out of this little trip and what the next step is through her internal monologue.

I walked beside him, and remembered how he acted back in there. He was surprisingly going along nicely with me. Maybe I would revise my impression on him.

Yeah they're totally going to make a love connection... :P

I hope this review didn't come across as overly negative! I thought the first two parts of this chapter were strong and while your writing has still come a long way since the beginning, the content of this part of the chapter just didn't do as much for me. Let me know if you have any questions/if anything I said was confusing. I look forward to reading more soon! :D

Hey! I'm back. Sorry this one's taken a while to come.

So, another good chapter overall. Let's get straight into it.

I actually liked the explanation that she seemed fragile, and that's why Scarlet didn't want to overwhelm her. It actually makes sense, especially when you consider that he doesn't know that much about humans.

In general here, I thought your dialogue read just a little bit more awkwardly then it normally does. Ideally, I'd be able to go through and point out each instance of that, but I don't really have the time and I don't think I could explain why for all of them very well. So in general, something to keep in mind is that your average person doesn't use very many words when speaking. You tend to have your characters say things in a way that makes them sound more like intellectuals, using complex words and formal speech patterns.

This is all very well and good for narration, but it doesn't work well in dialogue. I know this is more easily said than done, but try to see if you can make their language feel a bit more colloquial. With the lights, it's not much of a problem, but it does make the human characters' dialogue feel a bit odd.

Probably the best example of this is when the worker talks about how the bad light tried to convince him to help her. Those couple of sentences didn't read at all like how someone would talk, and it felt too...crafted. Too much like you're being deliberately vague.

Scarlet nodded.

How can a light nod? xD (I assume it would be him bobbing up and down slightly - in order to make that clear, say that he appears to nod by bobbing up and down once or twice, then just refer to it as nodding for convenience.)

I also like how you didn't spend too much time on her being all upset about Scarlet not telling her everything - I liked that once it was explained, she pretty much let it go.

Also, "stuffs" should be "stuff." There are very few instances where English speakers use "stuffs."

And that's really all I've got for you - I'm sorry it's not that long of a review, I feel like to be really adequate it would need to be really long, and I just don't have that kind of time these days. :(

Anyway, can't wait for the next part!
