In 7 Minutes Left

Maddie watched her older sister walk in, Kelsey. She clearly was not ready to get out of bed yet, despite it being Christmas morning. She and I were always opposites in every way growing up. Kelsey reminded me so much of Sarah. She always felt like a mirror version of my sister.

“Can we do presents first this year?” Kelsey complained. She was noticeably different from what I remembered. Now that I was used to her being older, Kelsey’s voice seemed squeakier when she was younger, and every sentence of hers ended in a question or the sound “uhh.” Her hair was also longer, but the biggest change was that it was still brown.

Kelsey changed it to blonde before college, determined to look older. I preferred it blonde too. I thought about the date of this Christmas. Kelsey couldn’t be older than twelve now.

Younger Maddie always decided to respond to everything anyone said, even if it wasn’t said toward her. “No! Breakfast is my favorite part!” Kelsey rolled her eyes at Maddie.

“Come on, we always eat breakfast first. Can’t I pick for once?”

“Kelsey. Sit down and eat your breakfast,” Mom said. Kelsey sat down with her shoulders slumped, clearly disappointed. I felt Maddie’s cheeks lift up, grinning at Kelsey since she’d won this fight. Kelsey rolled her eyes again. The family said their prayers, it was Maddie’s turn this time.

“Please bless our casserole and bless Mom and bless Daddy and bless Kelsey and bless our presents are good and bless this day and thank you for Christmas, Amen.” I cringed at Maddie during the prayer, but couldn’t help thinking it was cute too. I noticed Mom and Dad sharing a smile because of the prayer as well. It was the last time they’d do that again too.

Dad clapped his hands, rubbing with rough, calloused hands together. This signaled that the breakfast was about to start. “Okay, let’s dig in.”

Presents went by slowly. Usually, I was excited to see what presents I’d receive each year, but this didn’t feel like Christmas. I didn’t like the idea of living through someone else’s eyes when all I wanted to do was live through my own. I wanted to escape whatever place this was. Even if it was still me – or Maddie – it still didn’t feel right.

Maddie played with her new toy makeup set, putting on the brightest colors of eyeshadow and the most hideous red lipstick, but it still made her feel like royalty. She changed into one of her new church dresses and bossed everyone around like the princess she believed she was.

“Kelsey, bow down to me!” Kelsey looked up from her new phone. She’d just gotten it this Christmas. She examined the ridiculous outfit Maddie was wearing. Instead of laughing and playing along, she just looked back at her phone and walked down the hallway toward her room.

Maddie didn’t let this affect her too much, and continued to boss around invisible knights and act like she was in love with the most handsome prince.

I waited, and waited. I waited some more. I waited for what I knew was coming, what I knew couldn’t be avoided – no matter how much I wanted to scream at my younger self to change things. There was no part of me that wanted to watch the moment my family got torn apart – not again.

When Maddie was done playing princess, she was asking Mom questions.

“Mom, how do fireplaces work?”

“Mom, what’s higher than a million?”

“Mom, why haven’t you gone to space?”

I’d always been a curious kid. There was so much I didn’t know yet, things that I wanted to figure out. I was never great in school, so I chose to ask questions down to the finest detail, determined to understand why everything was the way it was – even if they were stupid questions.

I prepared myself for what was coming next. I remembered this part so clearly. It was burned into my memory – down to the last second.

Five seconds.

Two seconds.

hey! so i know it's been over a month since this was posted, but all the best reviewers are 'fashionably late'... right?

anyway, i thought i'd pop in and deliver my thoughts even though i've been gone for a little while because i really do like the concept for this story!

so first of all i think the setting for this chapter is very nice. obviously with only 7 minutes you as the author has to choose the most important memories that shaped maddie, and so far this seems to give us a really solid foundation. her as a toddler with her family on christmas gives us a bunch of context about her traditions, family members and their dynamics, all of which can heavily impact a character.

although it is almost summer by this point i do also love the cozy christmas feel, and it pairs interestingly with the imminent conflict you're setting up.

the only critique i have is that it feels slightly rushed, and it affects all of the things i enjoyed most about this part. for example, i can tell kelsey is supposed to be aloof and maybe a bit crabby, but at the moment she has so little time in the spotlight that her withdrawn demeanor risks her not leaving any impression on the reader.

it's the same with the activities. you have some key events like presents and right before breakfast, but at the moment it leans toward you describing their routine instead of letting us see it.

honestly this is already a really solid part, and since you've already divided the chapter into parts i think you have a lot of marginals to fill it out a bit. i'd love to see more if you expanded a little on kelsey and maddie's parents. one thing i took notice to was that you skipped forward in time with a 'presents went by slowly', but i'd love to see them actually opening their presents. i feel like you have a goldmine here. what presents someone recieves, gives and how they react to what they get could be a great opportunity to bring even more depth into their dynamics and their individual characters.

i'll be sure to check out the rest of this story when i have time, great work!

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!

Shalt we commence with the daunting S’more?

Top Graham Cracker - It’s Christmas Day! Maddie and Kelsey eat breakfast, they open presents, Kelsey straight up ignores her little sister, and Maddie pretends that she’s a pretty princess along the way. Everything is going well…not for long!

Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - I have no recommendations to make as of right now, but if you would like to edit this, then you may.

Chocolate Bar - I think my favorite part in this chapter is the countdown that Maddie is doing. Because she already knows what’s going to happen, she’s just awaiting the impact. I also like the prayer that seven year old Maddie did, it feels like the kind of prayer that a seven year old would make. And the fact that she’s still happy even when Kelsey ignores her is a nice detail. It shows how (most) kids don’t care as much as older people do.

Closing Graham Cracker - Overall, a fantastic second chapter to this story! I’ll be sure to read the next chapter of this that you have posted! I enjoyed reading this and I’m excited and fearful of what this memory Maddie wants to forget is. Now…

I wish you an enchanting day/night! ^v^

Hello @LaraJane Detective Ira here, I have apparently stumbled upon your manuscript while searching for clues in the Devil’s Library, which is where I believe the ancient magical book of Toramu is hidden. Since I’m already here, I shall give my opinion on this piece of yours.

Though I have to say it is very strange that I should find your writing here……. hmmm…..

What I can see

I'm back for part two! And wow, this was great! We have a new character introduced here Maddie's older sister. In past Maddie's memories she seems to be a typical aloof teenage older sister, quite different from how excitable Maddie is, but what really interests me is how is their current relationship?

Are they close? Do they talk? Are the estranged? Are things strained? From the little hints you've dropped I can tell that Maddie's mother has not taken the death of her husband well. Maddie's referenced several times that she doesn't smile anymore.

While tragedy can bring a family together, more often that not it seems to tear them apart, so how has Maddie's sister coped? And how has that affected things? Also I see that we are in fact not jumping in Maddie's memories, rather they are all continuously connected and about one event.

Hmm that's very interesting, I confess not a direction I was really expecting but I guess it's pretty obvious this is how it's going to go lol. Nevertheless I am very interested to see how this plays out. Particularly how you write this life-changing event that has been hyped up so much by the narrative.

Another thing I liked about how you've written these scenes, they are very realistic, very domestic and that really sells this sudden tragedy hitting a normal innocent family.

Under the magnifying glass

One thing I will say here is that this chapter feels a little rushed. Like you were in a hurry to get to the cliffhanger and sort of pushed through what came before. I think it would be really nice if you developed this scene a little more and really showed the family dynamic before this accident happens.

The breakfast and opening of presents are both really good opportunities to give the read an idea of who their characters used to be.

Closing the case

Overall this was a great second installment, I'm excited to read more!

It was lovely going through this manuscript of yours. Everything expressed was my opinion, feel free to accept or reject whatever you want.

If you have any clues relating to the book of Toramu or anything you want to clarify feel free to contact my alias, ahem, my dear friend @canopy.

Until next time!!
