“Now, Xzalliff, your mother said that I had to put you into this corset-“

“I know what she said! Good grief,” the girl sighed with a roll of her eyes. She crossed her arms and pouted. “I just… I hate getting dressed up for these stupid auctions, you know? Father always says, ‘Well, you need to follow the rules of the Octaviax and blah blah blah.’”

“Xzalliff, it is truly absurd to treat your parents with such… disrespect,” Xzalliff’s butler said, pulling the strings of a black corset extremely tight. Groans and moans from the young adolescent were audible as sweat beaded on her forehead. The butler winced a couple of times when she started screaming in pain, though it was his duty to continue. “I’m sorry!” He squeaked.

Gasping, Xzalliff replied, “Stop!” A wheeze followed. “It’s… too… tight!”

When he was finished, the teen butler patted Xzalliff’s stomach. “We’re all done here. Now… Your dress.”

“I am not going to wear that hideous thing,” Xzalliff hissed, exposing her sharp canines. “It’s too bright, not to mention how puffy it is. Try to find something black. Or charcoal.”

“Xzalliff…your father said-“

“Bianca,” Xzalliff gently placed her hands on her butler’s face and caressed it. “Father wants for me to be a pretty little princess. I want to be a Forbidden Shadow. I want to know all of the magic, the spells… I want to teleport, to read minds… I want to be able to do anything with the snap of my claws-“

“Your father would never let that happen,” the butler replied. He ran a hand down his master’s hair. “You know that.”
Timidly, Xzalliff said, “I know.” She looked down. “Maybe if I ran away, I could-“

“You know who would find you, Xzalliff. They’d do as the Octaviax. If not them, then… the Seven would.”

“But, Bianca!” Xzalliff smiled, taking her butler’s hands. “Maybe I could become the Eighth!”

The door was knocked on. “Xzalliff, dear? Hurry up! Breakfast is ready!”

“Okay, Mother,” Xzalliff called.

Bianca brushed a hand through his white hair. “Come on, Xzalliff. Just pick a dress out that you would like to wear, and if your father doesn’t approve of it, I will tell him that it was my fault.”

“No,” Xzalliff said. “I’ll take the blame. It’ll be okay.” She scurried off to her closet and pushed through the racks of dresses. With a wink of her deep burgundy eyes, and smiled at her white haired butler. “Don’t worry, Bianca. Father likes you.”

Finally, she picked out a simple grey dress to her knees, followed by a black sweater. Since Xzalliff’s species is always naturally cold- they are literally cold-blooded-, they always must wear some garment over their outfit to keep them warm. And if the Shadow species gets too cold…

“Is this alright, you think?”

“Your father will disapprove of it…but…if it makes you happy…”

~

The rest of the Shadow family all sat at the long dining table, napkins in their laps, legs crossed, and dressed appropriately. The maids and butler all stood behind Ellehctileavious, the head of the family. There Xzalliff came, running to her seat, with Bianca behind, blushing in embarrassment.

“Stop,” Ellehctileavious said. “Do not move, Xzalliff. Arms behind back, legs together, and put your wings up. First of all…”

Xzalliff groaned as she forced her large set of black wings into her back. “Continue, Father.”

“Your dress. You are dressed hideously. You are a lady, dear,” he replied in a dark voice. “You are not a human being, you are a Shadow.”

Xzalliff pursed her lips and dug her claws into the palms of her hands. “I… I am aware of that, Father.”

“Do I have to remind you that we live in the Octavius Realm?” Ellehctileavious said with spite.

“No,” Xzalliff murmured, her head hanging low.

“Secondly,” he announced, “you are late. Why is that?”

“I was…I was-“

“Don’t even try to make up some kind of zany excuse for why you were late,” Ellehctileavious replied, extending his hand out. “Now, sit down in your seat and eat your breakfast.”

The girl nodded, made her way to her seat, and sat down. Her butler put a silk napkin in Xzalliff’s lap and slowly walked away. “I’m sorry that I’m a female,” Xzalliff murmured.

“Do not say that,” Ellehctileavious reluctantly said. “It is just that… you must act like one, that is all.”

The girl nodded after she bit her bottom lip with force. She took a deep breath in and let out a puff of fire, followed by a scold from both her mother and father. Her father gave her the most evil look that she had ever witnessed in her lifetime. His eyes were slanted to almost nonexistent slits, his teeth were bared, suddenly making Xzalliff shudder just by glancing at the intimidating set of lethally sharp bones protruding from his gums, his lips were ultimately curled downwards in the most unfriendly and rude frown she had ever seen, and it seemed as though his head would explode at any moment.

“Why are you such a failure, Xzalliff?! Why can’t you just be like one of your brothers?” her father practically screamed, leaning over the dining table to get in his daughter’s face.

“It was an accident, I promise! Father-“

“Xzalliff, sweetheart! Ladies do not do that! Gentlemen are allowed, just not at the dining table,” her mother scolded.

“Xzalliff, if you are going to act disrespectful and-“

“Father! It was an accident! I’ve just been… Please…”

“What did I tell you about trailing off in thought as you speak? And stop your stuttering! Get your elbows off of the table, put your legs together, wipe that dirty look off of your face, stop humming, sit up straight, close your mouth, stop showing your fangs, put your tongue back into your mouth, stop making your eyes turn different colors, and quit the telekinesis!” Ellehctileavious’s voice got louder and more irritated by the word that he was practically screaming. “Be a lady for once! Make me proud to be your father!”

Xzalliff gulped, trembling. “Forgive me, Father.” Her gaze was glazed over with a thin layer of tears, though she tried to hide it.

Her father tilted his head up and peered straight into his daughter’s red eyes, but more than that. It was like her father was trying to stare into her soul. “Eat your breakfast, Xzalliff.”

After moments of silence, one of Xzalliff’s brothers, Zasamous, spoke up. “I’m done. May I be excused?” He flipped his glossy black hair and adjusted his bowtie.

“Not just yet, Zasamous,” Ellehctileavious ran a hand through his red hair. “After everyone is finished, your mother and I have to make an announcement.”

Half of the family was exclaiming and gasping, though the other half was moaning and groaning. “Is Mother expecting again?” a voice sighed.

“Is it going to be a boy? Please tell me I’ll have a ninth brother!” someone exclaimed, clapping their hands.

“I do not think she is,” Ellehctileavious said, eyeing his wife and grinning. “Molly? Are you sure, dear?” He stroked his wife's shoulder with his eerie skeletal hand.

“I’m not, children,” the children’s mother said with an eyeless gaze. She spooned a spoonful of oatmeal into her mouth and chewed, uneasily looking at her husband. She whispered, “Stop that.”

After the family was finished eating their breakfast, Ellehctileavious announced, “Most of the family is aware of this, though some children may not be. Our family reads a book called The Octaviax, right? Alright. And whatever it tells our family to do, we must fulfil our duties as Octaveyells and do as it says. And since Xzalliff was born as the second female Shadow ever in history, the Octaviax instructs us to auction her off every year in February, though no one ever buys her, and your mother and I believe that it is intentional. The price on her is extremely high, and no one ever can afford her…”

The man looked at Xzalliff and smiled. “Therefore, we get to keep our baby girl. So, today, at the thirteenth hour, we will go to the auction house and ‘sell her off’, but do not worry, Xzalliff. No one will buy you. No one ever bought your mother, so I doubt that anyone will buy you.”

“And if they do…?” Xzalliff nervously stared at her father with wide eyes. She brushed a piece of her light purple hair out of her pale face.

“Do not worry, dear,” her father smiled, “Daddy will always keep you safe.”

Hi! I'm back again! I don't say this very often, but this story of yours really made me smile. I don't know why, maybe because Xazlliff (How do you pronounce her name? Can I just call her Xaz?) is such an adorable character, I've come to like her a lot. How old is she? Is she somewhere around twelve or thirteen, because that's the age I imagine her as. They're going to sell her? O_O No, why! I've got a feeling that she's gonna be sold to someone already, since this is how most stories goes. I like her character way more than Fear and Soul (no offence). There is a lot more character development in this chapter and we get a lot more insight into who she is as a person. I also really like how you portrayed the differing views on male and females in the family, says a lot about who they are. Basically, I liked this chapter better than the last. Sorry for the rant. I will move onto what I didn't like so much now.

First thing, I'm really dubious with the naming of Bianca as her butler. Bianca suggests a female name, however Xaz's butler is male. If Bianca is their butler, wouldn't his name take on the same fashion as their names? Next thing, is how old Bianca is the whole time you're talking about Bianca, I kept getting this Black Butler vibe off him. But that could be just me, realistically speaking. Bianca is too young for a butler, and far too inexperience from how he behaves. He is more suited to the role of a maid than a butler. I found his behaviour towards the end somewhat contradictory to his role as well, the way he relented to let Xaz have her way said that he isn't firm-handed in handling her the way a butler should. He stuttered

“Your father would never let that happen,” the butler replied. He ran a hand down his master’s hair. “You know that.”

Because his master is actually a girl, in this case it would his mistress. Which is the equivalent female term of Master. And approaching the end of their dressing session, Bianca's behavior points to a more female bahviour than male. Males are usually not so lenient

So, this is the same as the last chapter, I think there were scenes where you could have developed more. When Xaz first arrived at the dinner table, her wings appeared out of nowhere. O.o So, maybe foreshadow this at the dressing scene?

There was disjointed dialogue on here as well. Just before Elleh (I can't spell his full name) had to make the announcement, that session there where the family groaned. The exchange between Molly and Elleh didn't make sense.

I'm glad that you didn't make the father's speech an info dump, because I've seen too many writers do that. However, that brings to me a question on the father's tone. It's very colloquial and I thought for Simeon his status, shouldn't his speech be more refined and distinguish him from everyone else?

I have a thing about the auction itself, why do they need to sell her off for what purpose exactly? I hope you're going to give us a further explanation of this later on, why does this family follow everything the book says? Who decides on the price? Can they truly beat on that no one will buy her?

Alright, that brings me to an end of my review. I've just got a question though, why do these characters all have abnormal hair colour? Is it because of their race or something else?

Anyways, I enjoyed reading this. If you have any questions, PM Me.

Hello~! <3

Oh my. I feel so honored! (Again! ^3^) First off, thank you so much for your review and for taking time out of your day to do it. <3

I'm so happy that you like Xzalliff. <3 I totally agree with you, I like her way more than Fear. (I've had her for longer, for one. ^^) She's actually fourteen, so you weren't that far off. ;)
(Xzalliff's pronunciation: "Ex- zall- if")

Thank you! I did not even know about mistresses (and I didn't know that males could be maids, either. You learn something new every day. ;) ).
I tried. I tried not to make it Black Butler-ey.

But I think I failed. DX (And I'm trying to make Bianca a very different character, then have a major plot twist in the middle of the story. I'm trying to make him seem like a friend more than a butler/maid for right now. ^3^ Bianca is around fifteen. A very young butler, I know. :c)

I feel so ecstatic that it made you smile! <3 I'm proud of myself now. XD

And about the auction, there will be further explanations. ^u^ The next chapter should answer all of your auction questions, if not, then chapter five will.

Yep! It's their race. ;) I'll probably explain the Shadow species fully in future chapters, so don't worry. ^w^

Once again, thank you so much for your time, advice, and kind words. <3 I really appreciate it, and I'll make sure to use this advice in my writing. ^u^
Have a great night~! <3

Another chapter, yay! :D Haha. You update really quick. I'm jealous of how fast you write (unless this is pre-written?).

Anyway, I don't think there are any grammar issues here, so yay! Haha. I was pleasantly surprised to read about some new characters, and they're so interesting too. I love their names. Did you come up with them yourself? They're so creative!

I was a little lost in this chapter, with all the new vocab words thrown out there. Like Shadow, Forbidden shadow, the Seven, etc. But I'm sure that stuff will be explained later on.

(Maybe this will be explained later, but... I'm just gonna think out loud here Why is her father so strict with her? He obviously loves her, I think. Is it because she is one of the only female Shadows ever? I'm so curious! :)

Lastly, this one is an actual question/critique. When her dad was making the announcement, he said "As all the family knows, we will..."
Then he says "Some children may not know this,"
Those two sentences are kind of contradictory to each other. Is he announcing it to maybe the younger children? Still though, how could they not know if it happens every year. Do the parents lie to the younger children?
If so, the first sentence could be changed to "As most of you know," and the second sentence changed to make it clear he is addressing the young ones.

That's all! I'll see ya again when you post the next chapter. :)

Hello~!
(Haha, yes, up to chapter three is pre-written, but I have thousands of ideas planned out, which will help with quicker updating.)

Yep. Every single vocabulary word will be explained with time. ;)

Oh, yay! I love to talk about Ellehctileavious and Xzalliff's relationship. Here goes. He is so strict because (I'm going to be blunt) he's very sexist, also because she is the second female Shadow in existence (the last female Shadow, to be exact), and he's really naturally been strict with her since she was little. It comes to play with the Shadow Auctions (how to not be disrespectful and be kind to people) and just being a good child. Though he does love her beyond an extent and would do ANYTHING for her, even die for her, he's just a very serious person in general. :D

OH GOD. I CANNOT BELIEVE I DID THAT. I WILL FIX THAT.

Oh, and yes! I did create a few of their names. :) Like Xzalliff, Ellehctileavious , and Xzanis (Fear also), I did. Thank you! <3

Thank you so much for the review! I really appreciate it! Have a great day, and thank you so much for your kind words. ;)

First off really enjoyed your righting I'm not 100% sure why but the children give me this The Munster family feeling being so unusual with the purple or red hair to changing eye colors at the dinner table seems almost natural for teens to do just be playing. Also the Father bi-polar attitude *woo* that man reminds me of mine at times, gives a relatable close to home feeling that isn’t really positive but you know it's relatable and gives me understanding for the girl, Xzalliff. Also, would like to say quiet a nice bloody name choice you have here mate.

Now here is where the VERY small part I dislike, me being dyslexic and all I felt it hard to fallow the characters as I am a little write myself and read about 2 books a week (read the whole harry potty series five times, I was on a thing I don’t know :p ). With the words being how there were and I felt as if you could identify the character individually, I know how exhausting it can be to say the character name over and over, but maybe instead of things like she or he you can give a detailed description of what they look like
Ex: “I can’t believe you dropped the money Frank!” The ~man with the blue suit and slicked back hair~ exclaimed at the top of his lungs almost yelling out to the heavens to here so that they may see pity on his sorrows and help.
As I said nothing really major mate but, I do believe little things like this can really throw in mood and what that person looks at, at that moment.

Great piece keep writing don't go wanker and stop! Joking of course we all are a little crazy.

(Also your my first ever review!)

Hello~! (And congrats on the first review! :D This is a good review!)
Thank you so much! I actually created her name.
Yeah. Though I only try to explain a few characters in this story in particular, because only a handful really matter in the long run. But I'll make sure to go back and edit their descriptions. ^u^
Haha, I totally won't stop. That's my biggest pet peeve of writing sites (when someone stops their story ^^)
Thank you much again for the review! I really appreciate it!
