Chapter 3: Captured!

The next day they saw smoke rising from the forest.

Leti’s father ordered every one to get ready to fight because he thought that the smoke was coming from the British army.

After about 3 hours everything was ready and they saw a few red coats coming out of the woods Leti’s father said thst they must be scouts from the British army and so it befell.

The first line of red coats was roughly about one hundred men and the other lines the progressed along after the first were of about the same size as the first line, when they got close the Irish began to fire their pistols and muskets into the lines however they did not do much damage while the fire which the British kept up killed many of the men on the wall one ball hit Leti’s father in the shoulder and he lost his balance and feel to the ground along with a large number of his countrymen.

Then he saw Grong shot through the head and he feel sideways onto the wall Leti ran toward him and saw that he was dead, George who was helping with the ammo for the muskets as he was going along a musket ball smashed into his hand the ammo box which he had been carrying fell and he lost his balance and feel into the large ditch, Leti could see that he was dead form the fall.

Then another bullet hit his musket and it was knocked out of his hand Leti steeped back and fell off the wall into the mud and lost consciousness in the deep mud and felt the hand of men garbing him and dragging him in which direction he was not sure then he felt the mud being washed off of him and then he fell asleep.

He woke to the far off sound of big guns he opened his eyes and saw that he was in some kind of tent he leant forward into a sitting position and saw many other Irishmen laying and sitting in the ten and all were wounded he stood up and felt dizzy almost falling over a couple of times he got to the doorway and walked out but was shoved back in by a large redcoat he feel back onto his back with a slight groan.

He stayed in the tent for a good long time then a redcoat came in grabbed a man and hauled him out the man came in with a bleeding mouth and a missing tooth.

When Leti asked the man he grinned at him and more blood poured out of his mouth Leti looked away and went back to his bed and laid down about ten of the Irishman were brought out and the last one was the only one who had no wounds that he had not had before all of the ones that had been brought in before jumped at the man but the guard stopped them by whacking them with the stalk of his musket.

Then they were forced to march on toward another town not to fare off, Leti thought that they had taken the town and were moving on to the next town to take.

One time he saw the guard run off to the south at least he thought it was the south, he got up and walked to the door there were no redcoats around so he called to his kinsmen and they all ran out then they turned and ran back the way they had come, they saw off in the distance in the direction of their town a long wisp of smoke was rising they all picked up there speed running on the large trail that the British army had made.

When they got to their town they saw that it was not but a pile of ash and coles.
