Whomerlock- Epilogue

PreviousNext

The Doctor stepped out the Tardis. He had just finished conducting a few scans of both the city and the earth's atmosphere, to be sure that the aliens had indeed left for good. And they had, everything was practically perfect.

Sherlock was talking to Molly, hopefully congratulating her for successfully leading the rebellion. She deserved all the praise in the world, that pig-tailed young lady, but the redness in her cheeks indicated that Sherlock's attention was reward enough.

John was standing out of the way, against the colourful wall of the pancake house. He had a phone to his ear and was speaking tenderly to someone clearly very special to him. An old woman, the Doctor recognised her as Mrs Dawson, waved to John. But when she saw he was preoccupied, her attention returned to the two adults holding onto her arms. Eleven froze for a second, remembering the clones, but relaxed when his screwdriver confirmed that they were indeed her human children.

Someone else was being waved to. Gwen's hand swung eagerly in the air at Christy. She was walking away from the scene with her parents, who had fought alongside Molly. Gwen was standing with Arthur and Merlin, who were close enough to the Tardis that the Doctor could hear their conversation.

"You've lied to me, all this time..." Arthur was saying.

"I'm sorry," Merlin looked disappointed that they were still needing to have the conversation, "but you know I couldn't tell you." Eleven knew what was coming, what he would be required to do. There was no point putting the two friends through this anymore.

"Merlin!" He signalled for the warlock to join him. "Would you help me with something?" Merlin nodded and hastily left Gwen and Arthur to celebrate their success. As he stood beside the Timelord, Merlin's eyes found Morgana, who was sitting in the gutter, bandaging her knee.

"What are we going to do with her?" He asked plainly.

"Oh, I don't think you'll need to do anything." Eleven answered, wondering how to tell Merlin what he was about to. He spotted Sherlock approaching them, Molly having gone off to find her other friends. "Ah, if it isn't the consulting detective! Could I tempt you with a cup of tea?" He indicated the open door of the Tardis. Sherlock shook his head.

"I think something stronger is required."

"Yes, well..." The Doctor looked at all bodies of the clones. They were abandoned throughout the streets, just lying there like broken puppets, lifeless eyes glazed over. "You'll have a lot of cleaning up to do." He wouldn't really though, and Sherlock knew it.

"Oh," he replied, "I don't think that's quite true. I expect you'll be wiping the events of the past week from our memory."

"Yes, but I doubt you'll forget," he winked, "Even I can't get inside that mind palace-"

"Wait," Merlin interrupted, his expression twisting with confusion, "you're wiping our minds?" Eleven nodded. He didn't want to, but the aliens had distorted the natural timeline of earth. They had muddled up everything, and the only way to put things right was to erase the events from existence.

"When I take you back to Camelot, I'll have to make you all forget..." He spoke slowly, clearly, the way he talked when he couldn't save someone. And it was true, part of Merlin was going to die. The part that had seen the time vortex, travelled to the future, saved the world. Actually, that wasn't true, Merlin had and still was going to save the world over and over. "It's the only way to fix time." There were tears in the warlock's eyes, but he seemed to understand.

"It's for the best, I know." He glanced at the prince, who was laughing with Gwen. "And he won't know my secret, or Morgana." His head dipped. "Morgana will still be the same."

"Yes," Sherlock explained, "everything will be as it was before the foreigners arrived in Camelot."

"But," Eleven piped up, "Arthur would thank you. Given time, he would thank you." Merlin smiled, though he could tell it was forced.

"I know that, and when the time is right, he still will."

Eleven clicked his fingers and the police box door swung on its hinges. "Let's have one last ride in the Tardis, eh?" That brought a genuine smile to the warlock's face. "Let's take one last look at everything."

SIX YEARS LATER

"And then the blue box dematerialised, and everything went back to normal." Sherlock pulled the bed sheets up to the little girl's chin. "The end." Her delighted eyes beamed up at him, and she blew her godfather a kiss.

John appeared in the doorway, and placed his hand on the light switch. "You didn't just tell her that same story again, did you?" Sherlock laughed under his breath. "That's what, the one thousandth time? She'll start believing you." The detective's laughter was mirrored by childish giggles from the bed.

"Your mind was wiped, daddy. But it's all true, every word!" She winked at Sherlock, and, grinning from ear to ear, he winked back.

Heya, Dracula! Casanova here to do a shor- I thought I reviewed this already. Anyway, this is a short review.

Anyway, This seems to be one of your more boring short stories. I'm not saying it isn't good, because it does live up to the potential I've seen from you, but this seems like it could use some work. Your plot isn't going that smoothly, and I can see it being done a bit better, It seems to drop off some towards the end, and I feel like you could have done better suspense wise.
Your characters are somewhat an improvement than other short stories I've seen you do, and I think you could have done slightly better with John? Anyway, that's up to you.

Anyway, that's all I have to say on this one. I hope it helped.

Keep on doing what you're doing, and keep on keeping on.

Sincerely Matthew Casanova Aaron

OKAY so that ending is adorable and I love it. But let's get to this - this review will encompass both the last chapter and this epilogue, basically the ending in general. Sorry if I wax too philosophical. :P

Time for me to ramble. Now, Sherlock, Merlin, and Doctor Who are three very different shows in genre and general atmosphere, right? Just by the tone, the lighting, the types of plots, you can tell which show is which the same way you'd tell a romance from a thriller. But this is a crossover. So the question is, what genre is this? Are you crashing Doctor Who and Sherlock into a Merlin story, or is the Doctor just happening to travel to Merlin's time in this week's episode? An interesting thing about Doctor Who is how it's just inherently able to crash into other genres and sort of assimilate them, since the show covers all of time and space and can be literally anything. (Also, I don't think you could call this a Sherlock story - it's not a mystery and you just don't spend enough time with John and Sherlock.)

Personally, I feel like this is closer to a Doctor Who episode that happens to have characters from Merlin and be set in that time period. Mostly because the enemies are aliens and their tactics are very Doctor Who-ish tactics. Now, if the enemy was a rogue wizard and the Doctor had to help Merlin and the others find him and stop him, than it would be a Merlin story that happens to have the Doctor in it. Neither story is better than the other, the question is just which one are you telling? Because that affects audience expectations and it affects your endings.

So yeah, I think this is pretty much a Doctor Who story, with the way you've set it up so far. And now we come to the problem: this climax is not a Doctor Who climax, tonally speaking. Because it's basically just one big fight scene started when Molly begins the revolution (which was awesome). And then they fight and fight, and Morgana kills the leader, and then it's all over. And while sometimes that's the way Sherlock solves things, and very occasionally Merlin, it's not usually like that in Doctor Who unless the *point* is that it's violent and there was no other way. It's not usually treated this normally, and it just feels odd.

There's no "aha" moment here, no part where the Doctor is clever and gets a one-up on the aliens because of it. It feels very tonally strange because the answer is, in the end, just kill everyone. And honestly, that doesn't fit any of the shows very well, but it fits Doctor Who the least. And quite apart from anything else, the Doctor and the others don't really do much. They fight, yes, but they didn't cause the revolution - Molly did. The ending feels like it would have happened with or without them there, especially since all that's needed to break the blood oath is for someone to kill the alien leader. Unless it's supposed to be Morgana specifically? That wasn't a point I was quite clear on.

I like how you do make everyone forget - it does need to happen, though I do think the Doctor wouldn't do it, it would just naturally happen because the "timestreams are out of sync," basically the excuse used in the 50th. And I love how they still kind of go off adventuring before they head back. And of course Sherlock would remember. That's so perfect. I love how he tells the story to John's kids. I can just see that. So yeah, very end is perfect.

And I think that's all I have to say! I hope it made sense, and of course it's just my opinion, so make of it what you will. I've really enjoyed reading and reviewing this, and I'm almost sad that it's over, but hey! You finished! :D

If you ever write more fanfics, you know where to find me.

*massive facepalm* I was so focused on the other characters that I completely forgot to think about what Eleven was doing. Before I work on anything else, I will fix that. Thank you tremendously for pointing it out.
