Storyteller's Reality Chapter 3

It was a cold morning,

with this blizzard day blustering frostbite everywhere. Luckily, I am sheltered from the wind in my icy cave. I was alone to any eye that could see. Except that I was really not alone. I had someone in my conscious, whom I call "Teacher."

She, if she really is a she-I mean her voice is womanly so I am assuming she is definitely a she-but I am not totally sure.. She could be a spirit and some spirits-or souls-don't have definite genders sometimes.. The moments when she decides to appear in my head-little creepy sometimes.

Anyway, she is in my head and she talks to me a lot. I had wondered for quite some time how I had come to this cave. Finally, one day my Teacher answered my question..

I was looking around my solitary-habitat-of-a-cave thinking about the upcoming day's events as usual. Like always, I pondered why the cave was so massive-a ceiling with glorious, sharp icicles hanging in stalactite form-pristine and iridescent. It always had somewhat of an eerie feeling to it. Always reminding me of a mirror reflecting on me. Though, spending the amount of time I have here makes it hard to remember what an actual mirror looks like. Or a bed for that matter. The cave had nothing within except me and my consciousness. Almost like a hideout strategically placed in the middle of nowhere. This day, however, my shadow-of-a-conscious-Teacher brought me back to reality.

This is the North Pole. Yes, you are currently as they say, 'on top of the world.'  The voice was as wise and slightly older sounding as usual. You must change back into a human for a moment to understand my next words. I was confused.

Back into a human? I questioned. How and why?

My teacher did not answer. Yet I somewhat felt her presence in my head so I guessed she was waiting for me. I looked down at my snow white paws, felt my ashen gray claws extend outwards a little as I stretched hungrily. I then looked up again and found my favorite spot in my cave, a solitary icicle pointing upwards from the ground. I sluggishly walked over to its gleam tinged blue with cold. It was big enough for me to see my face reflect in it.

My pale face shone back at me, my sunken black, soul-searching eyes, black and grey nose-slightly pink around the edges. My closed mouth with black colored blubber outlined in a grey tinge. A tinge of gray fur separating my pristine coat from my fat lips. The whole of my face square-shaped with a long snout and two small, chubby ears on the top. Round corners to top it all off--a true polar bear. I thought about human features.. like my platinum-blonde hair, grey-green eyes, and my small nose..

   Well done apprentice.

Hm? Oh! I looked hard at my reflection once more and saw myself looking back at me.

You are human once again. Now I can give you my gifts so your tests can finally begin.

I didn't understand the gravity of her words, but I still listened anyway. She continued her cryptic word riddling spin.

You are many things, you will be many different things, for good or for bad-that is your choice. So is your identity. Use your identity as a trick to buy you some time, if needed. That is my first gift to you, survival knowledge. She paused, as if in thought of what to say next, almost like a human being does.

Now here is my second gift. The gift of foresight. There will come a time when you will find a shape that speaks to you-in other words you find it to be the one. Hopefully it is as I see it to be, but be careful. Choosing it will take you down a dangerous path-even if you are ready for it, be advised to use caution. Hope will guide you, should you trust it. Use hope and a light will guide you even when there seems to be no way to be found. And now for my final parting gift.

Good luck, my child. These next few months will be your tests. May you succeed. Right after that, she suddenly disappeared. I could not sense her presence. She was gone. I was truly alone. I sat for while wondering if she would come back-she did not. An hour later, I decided she meant what she said. So I set myself to work.

  ~

Now it is three months later after the day she left. Every day she was gone I worked my hardest, shape-shifting over and over again, seeing what was beyond my limit and what was not. What was beyond my limit, I trained myself for until I could achieve the shape. Of course, these were all pretty small animals.. wolves, foxes, dogs, cats, rabbits, hares, eagles.. etc. Polar bear was the biggest I managed. After every shift something spectacular flashed before my eyes. So spectacular I would keep changing just to glimpse it again, all the while developing my abilities. By the end of three months I glimpsed it long enough to make out a dark purple outline in a snake-like shape.. but bigger in size, almost like a dragon. There were horns, and spikes and something on the tail. I couldn't make out what it was, but it was definitely calling out to me. It shined bright while the rest of the dragon was dark and ghostly. The whole thing left me with an impression afterwards-beauty and power-and I wanted it.

Little did I know this was my destiny calling and everything my teacher had said was starting to come true..

Hey, Cynder!

I'm going to mention this quickly, even though Wolfie did say to ignore it. I don't have an issue with it in particular, starting the chapter with emphasized first words, but perhaps keep them on the same line so that it still flows together. Don't sacrifice flow for aesthetics.

Another big thing that I notice right off the bat is the sudden tense switch from past tense to present, and having just read chapter two, it's a little bit off putting. Was that intentional? Just curious, but unless this isn't a permanent change made last minute, consistency is important. (It does swap back and forth in the beginning several times.)

Just a quick nitpick before I move on.

She, if she really is a she-I mean her voice is womanly so I am assuming she is definitely a she-but I am not totally sure...

I cannot recall the technical term for a line between two dashes, but I do know it's supposed to be a quick addition - like so - to the prose just to add something else to it. Here, it seems like two sentences were crammed together, while even sharing the same meaning. It seems a little unnecessary, and if you needed to, you could just split them up, saying about how she thinks she is a she, but isn't sure, but she thinks! It's a tad redundant.

Now, I'm a really big fan of foreshadowing and hinting at future events, but the more subtle the better. The best kind of foreshadowing is the one where you don't notice until the event happens and you go back to think, "Oh!! That's why that's there." Here, it's sticking out a bit more. The things like 'little did I know' are giving the reaction far before the action even came. Recall that is should just straight up happen to give more of the shock.

Towards the beginning, when there were your lavishing descriptions, it seems the prose is lacking. And I'm not saying that there needs to be more descriptions, in fact the opposite really. Sometimes it feels a little overloaded and heavy, but what I'm trying to say is that in the beginning, things feel too choppy. It's like the descriptions is what holds the flow, which isn't a bad thing, unless description is unnecessary. Take this part, for instance:

Anyway, she is in my head and she talks to me a lot. I had wondered for quite some time how I had come to this cave. Finally, one day my Teacher answered my question..

Here, description would be totally unnecessary, but there isn't that connected flow between lines. The train of though seems to jump over rails, confusing the heck out of the passengers. I recommend working on the action part of the prose so it too can smoothly flow and connect just like the rest.

Also, I wish there'd be a little slower pace, really showing us how she develops and what are her limits. How is she limited? What happens when she can't do something? How does she work through it? These kinds of things will help us learn so much more about your character, things that we need to know.

Still, I'm wondering how it will loop back and involve the men, the tower. Guess I'm just have to keep reading :D

Keep on Writing,
~Wolfare~

Hey!! Let's go team green!!!!!

She, if she really is a she- mean her voice is womanly so I am assuming she is definitely a she-but I am not totally sure..

I think you meant to say "I mean her voice..." You just left the little "I" out there.

I was looking around my solitary-habitat-of-a-cave thinking about the upcoming day's events as usual. Like always, I pondered why the cave was so massive, with large, pointy icicles hanging from a pristine, iridescent ceiling. It always had somewhat of an eerie feeling to it. It was always reminding me of a mirror reflecting on me. Though, spending the amount of time I have here makes it hard to remember what an actual mirror looks like. Or a bed for that matter. I love the imagery and description here. Wonderfullllllllllllllll!!!!

Now since I haven't read the beginning, I'm lost to what's going on. But nonetheless, your writing was easy to follow and above all beautiful. I love your careful and perfect choice of words!!!! You get the point and mood across that your trying to convey effortlessly and I'm amazed 'o'

Nicely done.

DUDDDDEEEE!!! You need to TELL ME when you post a new chapter!!! Luckily for you, I spotted this in the Green Room a day after you published it! ;)

Anyway, Wolfie has arrived to support Team Pen during this lovely Review Week!

I like that big bolded font thing you have at the beginning. People on here aren't really used to that, though, so you might get some criticism on it. Just ignore them. In my chapters, I capitalize the first phrase, but hardly anyone seems to understand why I do it. The way you have it is awesome. Be sure to edit your other chapters so that they all have the same thing.

However, I was very much not alone.

I suggest changing this to "Yet, I was not alone."
whom i call "Teacher."

Capitalize that i!
The times she decides to appear in my head sometimes is creepy.

This could use some rephrasing. Try "Sometimes, the times she decides to appear in my head are creepy."
large, pointy icicles hanging from a pristine, iridescent ceiling

First part: eh, second part: perfect! Let's look at that "eh" section. Large and pointy. Eh. You can do better then that! (The evidence is clear when you use "pristine" and "iridescent.") Take a look at this handy list of synonyms for "large." Here's some more for "pointy." That last list isn't very good, but at least it gives you some ideas.
My pale face shone back at me, my sunken black, soul-searching eyes, black and grey nose-slightly pink around the edges-and my closed mouth with black colored blubber outlined in a grey tinge separating my white fur from my fat lips.

Nice job! You did a good job of describing the main character's current appearance. It's just really l o n g for one sentence. This isn't STORY TIME, where we try to cram in all we can into one sentence. You can write as many sentences you need, at whatever length you wish. This sentence is just too long. It's very hard to comprehend with all those commas and hyphens. Cut it down into two or three sentences.
I didn't understand her words then but I still listened anyway.

To me, this seems like the Teacher was speaking an alien language that the main character couldn't understand, but I don't think that that's what you were trying to get across.
And now for my final gift.

Did you forget to write about the third gift?

Wow! This is certainly developing into a unique story. I love the idea of a shape-shifting person.

One thing that you could remember to do when writing more chapters is this: write about what the main character is actually thinking. It's in first person, after all. The narrator should be able to talk about how she feels about her life as it is now: a shape-shifting human. We haven't read any truly personal bits about the main character. I have no idea what her personality is like. You can also take more time to describe how it feels to be all those other arctic animals. Hopefully, you'll reveal some of that to your readers in the next chapter.

Overall, this was a sturdy chapter of a nice length. Your writing style is mostly consistent, which is very good. Keep up the awesome writing! I'm looking forward to seeing what will happen next!
