Head Quarters
"Where's the rest of your family, Brit?" Jax asked looking around. I straightened up into a standing position, the question surprised me. Something in Jax had changed, it was almost as if he cared about my well being.
"Brother died when the first bomb hit, the third story couldn't stand the impact of the bomb. It ended up crashing through the back. Mom and Lily were shot by one of your fellow soldiers. They used illegal assault rifles, so the bullets went through mana or arteries and or other necessary organs." I paused waiting for my feelings to take control of my body, but I felt nothing. I had finally achieved the state of being numb. "Dad went crazy, so crazy that he made it past the first perimeter fence, through the patrolling guards, and over the second fence to Canada." He nodded, he knew and I knew there was nothing to be said that could comfort me. "Where exactly are you taking me?" Venom laced my words, I couldn't stand the fact that he was standing there pretending that he cared about me.
"Soldier Training. They haven't found many girls, nor did they try to save any. So there's a major shortage on female guards. Since you were a good athlete, they will want you. Plus, you have some qualities they're looking for..."
"I'm guessing that means reproduce." He looks at me with his eyebrows furrowed. I've finally said the issue he had wanted to avoid, but when I'm involved you can't skirt around the truth. It almost seemed like he was trying to protect me, but what he didn't understand was that I needed no protection.
"I won't let them touch you like that. There's-"
"By what authority do you have that would stop them. You are almost as useless and weak as I am." I sneered at him. I knew I wasn't right, nor was I being fair, but he hadn't been fair to me in the past.
"I do have a use, I am a high ranking officer. That's what authority I have and I will use it. Why else do you think it would be acceptable for me to bring you to HQ? Why else would they trust me enough to leave or train a little bomb rat like you!" He sighs, I have angered him when he's tried so hard to contain it. "I've been searching for months in hope that I would find you alive." He pinched the part of his nose between his eyes. "Come on, we must go now. I can't be away long or they'll grow suspicious."
Jax led me out to his jeep, I lingered by the front door. I didn't want to have to say good bye, it'd be saying good bye to what memories I have of my family. I closed the door to the dilapidated building, my hand refused to let go of the knob.
"Come, Brittany, you may be able to come back when all of this is over." Jax's calming voice broke the spell the door had on me. Turning to the jeep, I slowly walked to the open passenger door. I looked at Jax, he looked at me with sorrow on his face. My own face may have contained some sort of sadness to evoke that kind if emotion on his. I sniffed. Even if there were no physical tears falling, my soul still mourned silently for my lost family.
"Did your family make it?" The answer to my simple question would either bring hope, or crush my thoughts of staying alive for nothing. He nodded a yes and helped me into the vehicle.
"The government got them out, it was the only way that I would join." Silence entered between us, only the rumble of the jeep turning on made noise. Eyes were upon me, his, boring into my soul. Trying to figure out the yearning a of my heart and my inner most thoughts.
Gathering my voice, I spoke to him. "Could you kindly avert your eyes elsewhere, you're disturbing me." I say with a sigh of defeat. I have succumbed to the enemy's side, I have betrayed every part of my being. And it is for all but a different kind of death. The death of will, freedom, the death of a creative soul. Maybe the physical death would've saved me the pain of having to endure the break down of myself, my own thinking, my will to fight back.
"I was only curious, you seem remote and quiet. I am the one that has done most of the talking. You and I have changed so much in such a short amount of time." Jax says. The memories of our short conversations threaten to seep through the vault that I had locked them in. Forcing them away hurt, but so would reliving them every single day. This caused an anger to well up within me and open my mouth.
"I might have never changed if you hadn't turned me away." It was but a simple sentence really. The effects that it had on Jaxton were mountainess. His face became neutral, unfeeling, my Jax. The hand on the steering wheel tightened, making the knuckles turn white from tension.
Trying to ignore the tension within the car, I began to mess with one if the many holes in my shirt. I hadn't been able to reach my old room to get one, the memories were to much for me. "You will be issues a new uniform when you get to the Base." Jax's voice was soft, sorrowful. He was trying to approach me the way he would a spooked animal, but I was just a broken soul that didn't want his company.
We stayed silent the rest of the way to the Base. Neither of us knew what to say. The things that had been said had turned into a nightmarish argument and torment of old memories. That's how it was for me, I knew not what it was for Jaxton.

The emotion in this piece if very well written, despite not having read a previous chapter or prologue. You can feel the tension broiling between the two, jax seems to regret his actions but stands by them, Britt has retreated into herself following her loss.
This odd society or world seems highly militarised but we dont get much else other than that, perhaps write in some extra details of their surroundings rather than focusing on their dialogue and emotions? It is a fairly short chapter and could use a bit of active description(unless you're saving it for part 2?
You use a lot of good adjectives too, not too much, not too little but always interesting and great at getting that atmosphere across.
As tonytwo has mentioned, there are a few minor typos, eg. mana, if instead of of, yearning a of(random letters) but they are easily edited
Keep up the good work!
Sorry auto correct messed up.
The story was nice, i jumped in here without reading any prelude or anything and i understand what is going on so kudo's to you.
In the sentence " They used illegal assault rifles, so the bullets went through mana or arteries and or other necessary organs." What is this "mana" you refer to? Are these people some future people that are different in some way? I think it may be the arteries but im not too sure by how you worded it.
The story was very suspenseful and i enjoyed it, i may even go read the other ones so that i can know the rest of the story. So i urge you to keep going with this plot and make it work.
It's supposed to be main arteries. Sorry was typing in a hurry and auto correct wasn't working apparently.
