Kelpie - Character Descriptions

Author's note:  I may plan on changing some of the names in the future, just to warn you guys.  And I'm open to constructive criticism and suggestions, thanks!

Survivor

Male Kelpie

6’2” height weight 190lbs (when in human form)

Appears to be 34 years old when in human form (real age unknown)

Black and blue hair, Green eyes, white skin

Graceful and elegant

Beautiful, long hair, long arms and legs, appears underweight at first glance (because of malnourishment)

Defects - looks filthy and malnourished

Appears to be of Irish/Scottish or British heritage (though not even human)

Used to be rich but now dirt poor and enslaved

One of the dark fae, a Kelpie (large midnight-blue horse that can shapeshift to human form), lives in poor conditions at the horse stall, hates being here and a strong hatred towards humans

Highly intelligent, but not much is known about his education (though it appears as if he has the capability of a college graduate)

Would normally live alone, but forced to be in a stall where horses are kept (though away from the other horses)

Not an athiest, probably believes in God, though not a Christian (certainly not in the way he acts)

Very anti-social unless it’s for his own agenda, though later on he does get more social with one person (Eve - since he falls in love with her)

Is neutral towards politics (doesn’t care one way or the other)

He entertains himself by watching others suffer, has a bad habit of getting into mischief, and very spirited, though surprisingly he does have a conscience at some point

No sex life (yet), he just wasn’t that interested before

Wants to be free and kill Mr. Samuels, and go back to his own home beneath the Mourning Pool and come out to terrorize humans and animals

Vengeful and passionate, possessive, controlling, murderous, not naive but doesn’t believe that things are impossible

Speaks English and the Fae tongue

Doesn’t see much past his desire for freedom, enjoying others’ torment, revenge, and blood (though it does change later on when he encounters Eve)

Eve names the Kelpie Survivor because of how resilient he is and he gets better after she nurses him back to health.

Eve Connors

Female Human

5’ 4” height weight 150 lbs

25 years old

Red hair (the color of blood), dark blue eyes, white skin with a slight bit of freckles

Slouches when she sits but is usually straight-backed when she walks

Has a beautiful face, a full and attractive figure (not like a supermodel because she has more curves than a supermodel could ever get), doesn’t wear make-up and usually wears plain dresses due to not caring about her looks, average arms and legs

Defect - Has a small, brown birthmark shaped like a heart on the top of her right foot

Appears to be of either Irish or Scottish heritage

Poor due to running away from old home (getting too old for the orphanage and didn’t want to be a nun), though she does eventually get paid as a caretaker of Jane and room and board

Becomes a caretaker/governess/maid 24/7 (except Sundays) (and secretly takes care of Kelpie at night), likes her work though a bit overwhelmed with it until she finds help from other future employees (usually due to her winning personality and good looks, people who help usually become attracted to her and help her because they like her or want to date her) (though she does send a letter to her friends at the orphanage and they join her in helping around the house for a job and to stay near her as friends)

Is very open about everything, doesn’t believe in superstitions or rumors, is a Christian, and is a bit of a bookworm, cares about others to a fault, and is merciful and full of empathy

Heterosexual, only dated once before (and that was with someone who tried to take advantage of her), now is slightly wary of another relationship though she still wants one someday, becomes attracted to Survivor (the Kelpie)

Used to have nightmares until she prayed to God that whatever is plaguing her mind would not haunt her dreams (and thus the Nightmare couldn’t torment her in her dreams himself)

Friendly to most people (unless they betray her trust) and tries to treat everyone the way she wants to be treated, though is a bit shy, is also blunt and oblivious, but also highly intelligent with the books and tutelage of others (the equal to a high school education), loves books and children, can’t dance since she’s not confident in dancing

Doesn’t care for monarchy, is more interested in a democracy, but keeps those thoughts usually to herself and shrugs it off as a slight disinterest to the current system

Likes her job, and is never far from a friend (though she longs for some type of romance someday), likes stories and sings secretly (shy about singing unless around a few people or just herself), likes watching others dance but can’t dance well herself, terrible with directions unless given written directions and a map, and is abundant in curiosity, has a love for animals and children as well as books, a thirst for knowledge rather than her beauty

Speaks English and understands the Fae tongue when it’s spoken (though she can’t pronounce Fae well)

At first when Survivor visits her in her dreams and tortures her there, she gets mad at him and thinks: “Has God deserted me?”

But when Jane sees Eve start to look dead in the eyes (empty), she cries and says, “Don’t leave me, Mommy.” This breaks Eve out of her doubts and thinks, “If God didn’t exist, surely there wouldn’t be such a blessing of a child. There’s no doubt in my mind now.”

She also thinks later when she finds out that the man haunting her dreams is Survivor, “You’re unredeemable! You can rot in that stable for all I care!”

When Jane overhears Eve scream out “You’re unredeemable! You can rot…!” She cries and runs past Emily, and runs to Cook, sulking in her tears. Emily swiftly opens the door and is about to give Eve a stern talking to, when she notices Eve is shouting in her sleep. She wakes Eve up and comforts her with a hug as Eve cries her eyes out. When she’s done crying, Emily says, “I believe you owe Jane an apology. She thinks you were yelling at her.”

Cook yells at Eve, “What did you do!?! She’s crying her eyes out! Tell me now, or I’ll kick you out myself.” Eve explains she was yelling in a nightmare, and Jane heard her through the door. She apologizes and Cook understands, letting her go to Jane. Jane says, “Mom! I’m sorry you died! It’s my fault, I’m unredeemable.” Eve hugs her and replies, saying, “I’m sorry Jane. I’m here. I’m not mad at you. You’re not unredeemable. No one is unredeemable.” And Jane believes her. Eve decides to finally check on Survivor after the rough day, feeling worried about him despite her doubts about him.

And she sees Survivor waste away even worse than before and pities him, thinking, “Surely God gives everyone a second chance. Who knows? It feels like the Christian thing to do. Doesn’t God give the chance of his mercy with all of his creatures?” And with that, she decides to nurse him back to health again, though wary of him.

Mr. Daniel Alan Samuels

Male Human

51 years old

5’ 11” height weight 201 lbs

Short black and grey hair, white skin, light blue eyes

Straight posture, though slouches when overly drunk or depressed

Appearance - handsome, somewhat aged, well-fed but not overweight, average build

Defects - sometimes appears disheveled from drinking or nightmares, sometimes bags under his eyes, sometimes reeks of alcohol, always has at least a slight scent of alcohol about him

Appears British, and speaks English (doesn’t understand Fae tongue)

Rich - owns his own estate, no job, spends most of his time drinking and wallowing away in memories and nightmares

Highly educated, though not always aware of himself due to drinking and lack of good sleep

Athiest (used to almost believe in God until he denied God after the murder of his wife, now he says, “If there’s a God, why would he allow my wife to die?”) - very superstitious ever since his wife died

Somewhat anti-social with others (unless his relative or sometimes Old Man Jack)

Hates almost everything except for his daughter and his wife (hates himself the most)

Lives in his room most of the time, though he also gets drunk and rides on horseback, often visits his wife’s grave at Widower’s Willow

Doesn’t care about politics, though he did at one time when his wife was still alive

Still cares for his daughter, even tried to stop drinking once by playing cold turkey, but after he had withdrawal symptoms, went back to drinking (though he does attempt to stop drinking again by weaning himself off of alcohol until he gives in to Morpheus, where he gradually goes back to drinking)

The only sex life he had was with his wife, now he’s a lonely Widower

Only cares about revenge on the Kelpie, drinking, the loss of his wife, and sometimes thinks about his daughter when sober

Is spoiled and gets everything handed to him (basically)

A pessimist, very self-confident, prideful, self-destructive, counter-productive, and alcoholic, ill-tempered, holds grudges, cruel to others unless he trusts or cares about them

Overly protective of his remaining family, so much that he doesn’t want his daughter to involve herself with lower-class children or townspeople unless they work for him

Sometimes when he looks at Eve when he’s drunk, he thinks of his wife, and even begins to mistake her as his wife when she’s partially in the dark. He also starts to feel attracted to Eve and feels betrayed by her when she gives Survivor the bridle and saddle. It’s as if his wife had come back to life and stabbed him in the heart, only to die on him a second time when he shoots her with the gun. For a brief moment, Mr. Samuels feels as if he had taken control of his life and feels a brief sense of relief and satisfaction until the pain hits him, realizing what he’s done. Not only to this person, but to his wife’s memory. He weeps, “I’m sorry.” (Thankfully, she was only gravely wounded and is nursed back to health in the sequel.)

Mrs. Lyn Sarah Torin Samuels

Female Human

34 years old (though now dead)

5’1” height weight 143lbs

Strawberry blonde hair, white skin, green eyes, light dusting of freckles limited to her nose

Straight posture

Appearance - beautiful, graceful, youthful, thin body

Appeared as a Scottish/Irish/British mix, speaks English (doesn’t understand Fae tongue)

Middle-class when she was single, but rich when she’s married to Mr. Samuels (they eloped)

No job unless you count being a social wife, lived in good conditions, happy and bright, child-like innocence, loving and trusting

Her only fault is that she falls in love too quickly and that love sometimes overwhelms her beyond reason (part of the reason why she eloped with Mr. Samuels)

Christian though not superstitious

A very open and social person, and loves her daughter and husband more than herself

Cares about the current politics, involved with everything she can, loved the town and everyone, when she was alive, her husband tolerated her need to be social with others, though he got jealous and insecure at times

Her death is the reason that Mr. Samuels is so bent on revenge and why he became an empty shell of his former self, he won’t rest until the Kelpie is dead or until his thirst for revenge is somewhat satisfied

Her body is buried under Widower’s Willow where she died (a site right by the Mourning Pool)

Jane Lyn Samuels

Female human

10 ¾ years old (almost 11 years)

4’5” height weight 74lbs

Black hair and green eyes, pale skin

A wild child unless around her father

Slouches when her father isn’t watching

Fear of horses and large bodies of water

Appears British, speaks English (doesn’t understand Fae tongue)

Rich - no job (unless you count her wanting to help around the house with her ‘friends’ Cook and other workers except for Old Man Jack)

A fast learner, though not very educated in math, history, and science

Hates being by herself, mischievous, likes to pull pranks on Old Man Jack, is sweet and honest to Eve, sweet to her ‘friends’ though not always honest, usually honest to her father but scared of him, thinks her father doesn’t love her and is insecure about how he feels about her

Christian and superstitious, believes what everyone tells her

Thinks politics are boring

Curious and loves to play, has lots of toys to play pretend with, loves running outside and looking at horses from afar, loves making new friends, a bit of a tomboy, stubborn, loyal, lies to others when she thinks she’s protecting someone, wants Eve to be her new Mom, once she warms up to Eve she even calls her Mom unintentionally, willing to conquer her fears and come out of her shell with Eve’s help

Is traumatized by her mother’s death and has nightmares about it until she and Eve pray for God to take the bad dreams away

Old Man Jack

Male Human

71 years

5’5” height (when standing perfectly straight) weight 139lbs

Bald head, withered skin, pale skin with a slight tan from working outside, appears mostly clean with a slight dusting of dirt, smells like horses, grey eyes, wears a tattered hat to protect his bald head

Hunched, which makes him appear even shorter 4’4” height

Appears to be of an Irish/Scottish mix, speaks English (doesn’t understand the Fae tongue)

Servant (wealth unknown - either poor or middle class), stable master for the horses and works from 9am to 8pm unless he’s working on another one of his ‘traps’ for the Fae

Has the equivalent of an elementary education, can read some, somewhat-versed in Fae lore and very superstitious (especially about Kelpies)

Hates children and stays secluded to himself unless otherwise giving his ‘Lord’ Samuels advice

One of the only ones that Mr. Samuels converses with anymore because he helped the ‘Lord’ Samuels capture and enslave the Kelpie

Has pity on Mr. Samuels, but only loves himself when it comes down to life and death situations

Has respect for the current monarch, but thinks that politics aren’t his business

Has a strong hatred for the Fae and Demons

Mistreats the Kelpie on purpose and allows Mr. Samuels to ‘interrogate’ the Kelpie, offers Mr. Samuels advice on the Kelpie and the Fae, feels pity for the man for the loss of Mrs. Samuels, especially since Jack is a widower himself

Very interested in reading more about the Fae and Demons so he can hunt them, and tries to learn how to read from Eve, but loses patience with her when she refuses to go out of her way to hunt creatures that don’t exist or at least haven’t done her any wrong (she refuses to help him in his research about more of the Fae and Demons since he just wants to hunt them), she welcomes him to still learn how to read, though she puts the books on Fae and Demons underneath a secret compartment in the horse’s stable (underneath the Kelpie’s stall’s floor)

Is heterosexual, but lost all interest in romance after the death of his wife and now only has a thirst for revenge on the fae

Seems crazy, but is highly intelligent, though somewhat in a twisted fashion when it comes to the Fae

He also taunts, neglects, and refuses the Kelpie food and water and sunlight (or even the company of others)

Cook

Female Human

27 years old

5’2” height weight 234 lbs

Black hair, white skin, grey eyes

Always wears an apron and is usually slightly dusted with flour or some type of kitchen condiment, overweight from overeating the rich food she makes (doesn’t like letting good food go to waste or just likes to eat food as a source of comfort)

Slightly slouched

Appears somewhat beautiful despite her stout appearance

British appearance, speaks English (doesn’t understand Fae language)

Somewhat superstitious but doesn’t let that deter her, believes in God but not a Christian (there’s a greater power out there but she doesn’t know what it is)

She can’t seem to stop Mr. Samuels from drinking or the last housekeeper from dying of old age (and none of the local townspeople seem to want to listen to her to become a servant at the cursed Samuels Manor)

She tries not to judge people, but has a flaw in that area

She had children but lost them in the divorce

She’s heterosexual, but lost hope for a husband who would love her

She doesn’t believe that men can change (‘men are all the same’) in truth, she only stayed because she needed the money and she cares about Jane

Somewhat intelligent in the knowledgable sense, knows enough to read recipes and labels

She used to love listening to stories openly and even tried reading some to her kids, but after the divorce with her now ex-husband and the separation of her children, she doesn’t read stories anymore, though at times she does get caught listening to Eve read stories to Jane, and when caught, she just casually leaves and says “Stories are for children. I’ve grown up.”

But even as she says that, she does change inside eventually because she wants to help Jane with her education and conquers her fears of the past (memories of reading stories to her children and fear of getting too close to people only to have them leave her (like her ex))

She gave up hope of getting more staff and stopped recruiting until Eve came along.

Mrs. Maria Hope

Female Human

76 years

5’1” height weight 148lbs

Grey hair, pale skin, brown eyes

Slightly slouched posture

Appearance- average, plain, average weight, clean and wrinkled skin, average body

Defects- low blood sugar and weak heart make her have a bad tendency to feel weak or have fainting spells

Appears British

Middle-class (though still a servant, she’s paid better than the others (except Old Man Jack) because of her occupation as the housekeeper of the Manor)

Very talented when it comes to cleaning and some leadership skills, doesn’t show her fear to anyone and cares for others deeply, not superstitious but thinks that everything happens for a reason

Christian (not superstitious but does know that something strange is happening at the manor)

She cleans around the help with her sister-in-law Emily Hope. Maria cleans the top floor and Emily cleans the bottom floor. She never allows anyone in Mr. Samuels’ bedroom (except Mr. Samuels) unless supervised by her (for fear he may do something rash). Very inviting and welcomes the help of others. Even tries to get help in town to get more servants to help her with the house (with little success). She snuck out of the house while Emily was cleaning so that Maria could look for more people to help. She’s often optimistic and full of hope for the future, though she’s running out of hope fast when she tries to find someone who will help take care of Jane and maybe even educate her.

A heterosexual widow. She does still have an interest in the male gender, but she says that she is ‘too old for that sort of thing.’ She had a loving pair of elderly parents, was orphaned at a young age because they died, worked as a servant for Mr. Samuels’ household, and fell in love with another servant and married him. He was killed while protecting her from a mugging when they were a young couple, and she and Emily (his younger sister) took care of each other ever since.

Though educated, she has a tendency of falling asleep when reading for too long and isn’t the most energetic or suitable for being Jane’s playmate or governess. She’s more hopeful than Emily, despite her knowledge that she won’t live for much longer.

And she’s a very independent and strong woman in spirit. She thinks the monarchy is ok, but she wishes that the king would care more about his subjects. She’s pretty much out of the loop when it comes to politics since most of the townspeople don’t even want to talk to her anymore or have anything to do with her since she works and even is in charge of part of the household of Samuels’ Manor (the haunted manor).

She met Eve and brought her to the manor to work as a ‘maid’ (secretly had hope that Eve might even be able to work as a governess in the future). When she walked in, she told Eve to go find Emily on the first floor, and to let her know that she was seeking employment from the housekeeper (Maria called Emily the housekeeper because Maria knew she had little time left). At this, Cook looked concerned, but quickly masked it by shooing Eve away and Cook claiming that Cook could take care of Mrs. Hope and they needed to talk. Cook also told Eve, “the faster you find Emily, the better.” And Maria said to Eve, “don’t worry about me, I’m fine. Emily probably needs to know who you are before she thinks I’ve gone and left her to do all the work.” Cook and Maria talk as she feels weaker and weaker, and Maria says “I feel my life draining away, Cook. I need to let you know our new ‘maid’ has great potential. Don’t you think she could make a great governess and playmate for little Jane?” Cook smiles, “Look at you. Up to your tricks again, I see?” “I haven’t given up yet Cook. And I think it’s finally paying off.” Maria feels faint and sits down, holding her head. Cook panics and goes to get some water and a snack for Maria. Maria doesn’t know Cook left and whispers, even as she feels the life leave her body, “The Lord has answered our prayers. Goodbye Cook.” And she dies peacefully, looking as if she had fallen asleep in her chair.

Ms. Emily Hope

Female Human

53 years old

5’2” height weight 149lbs

Dark brown hair with streaks of grey, dark brown eyes, white skin

Slightly slouched from exhaustion

Appears to be of British heritage

Slightly educated, but only enough to talk well in English and be able to read labels

Servant and apprentice housekeeper to Mrs. Maria Hope (her sister in law). After her only blood relative was killed, she’s been worried about Maria and does her best to help her and care for her in any way she can (at first without Maria noticing, but then more frequently as the years passed).

She’s afraid to interact with the townspeople because of the mugging done by a man who murdered her brother. She thought that the same thing could happen to her. So she never left the house and encouraged Maria (who was sickly) that she shouldn’t go out alone. But since Maria had never given up hope or given into fear, she put her faith in God’s hands and went out anyway since Cook was busy and gave up hope for getting anyone as a recruit for the household staff. Maria knew it was up to her to get more staff. So she went out alone while Emily was busy.

Likes her job, though she wishes she was paid more and that Maria was in better health. She often worried about her sister-in-law’s wellbeing.

She was a bit skeptical about Eve at first, thinking that Eve might give up on the first day.

But when Maria died and Emily had to take the responsibility of housekeeper, she went fully into her work and left no room for judgement of others. She simply worked routinely and overworked herself to get the thoughts of pain and torment out of her mind. Eventually she lets Eve help her when she collapses from exhaustion and they become friends and even Jane helps with the chores. Also, Emily hates when anyone does her work for her, so she tells them that the first floor is her floor and they can work on the second floor. Emily works sort of like a housekeeper, but not very well. Eve, however, not only does chores, but also goes out of her way to educate Emily better and they share stories together and help to take care of Jane.

Emily is a Christian, but has little hope for others.

The Nightmare Morpheus

Male Demon

Centuries of years old

3’ height weight 100lbs

Made of a shadow-like substance with two empty holes where eyes should be

Hunched over with claws and black fangs

A hideous and disfigured creature that is invisible to human eyes in the physical realm, and can only be seen by Fae, Demons, Angels, and God

He feeds upon fear and torment of other creatures (human, animal, whatever). He does this by sitting on their chests and going into their minds and making nightmares out of their dreams, either by reliving their memories or by experiencing their own fears in dreams.

Because he can’t go into Eve’s dreams anymore, he tries to find a way to torment her indirectly. So he follows her from the orphanage to the manor, and finally finds Survivor (the Kelpie) and strikes a deal with him. He says “a favor for a favor,” and gives the Kelpie powers to go into dreams and control them to some extent. He wants to destroy Eve’s mind and feel powerful again without having her get in the way of his ego. He also wants the Kelpie’s body so he can have a body to be able to walk on the mortal plain. Survivor at first agrees to the deal with Morpheus, wanting to make Eve suffer for fun. But since Survivor noticed that she cared for him and he developed a conscience, he decided to stop tormenting her and use the powers as a form of communication. Survivor wanted to be free and developed a plan of escape with her help.

Morpheus noticed this and tried to take control of the situation by haunting Mr. Samuels’ dreams and fears and made him go mad. He revealed that Eve secretly visited Survivor and was planning to set the Kelpie free. He also said many lies. He said that she was poisoning his daughter with lies about Mr. Samuels. Morpheus convinced him that Eve was trying to take Jane away from him and poisoning his own child against him. (When in reality it was the exact opposite.) And to tip him over the edge, he even said that she was in love with the Kelpie and would do anything to free him, even if it meant killing Mr. Samuels and taking his daughter with her. This made Mr. Samuels crazy and in a fit of rage, he shoots Eve in front of Survivor when the Kelpie already is given the bridle and saddle (this is also when Morpheus had demanded his favor from Survivor and went into the Kelpie’s body, causing him to temporarily freeze long enough for Eve to do so). When Survivor screams out in terror for her, Mr. Samuels realized that the Kelpie had feelings for her, and Mr. Samuels whispers, “At last you feel the pain of loss.”

He feels a sort of kinship with Survivor, knowing what it’s like to feel powerless, though it’s feeling powerless against God rather than mankind. That’s also a big reason why he decided to strike a deal with Survivor, so they both could have some sort of revenge.

When he sees Survivor back out of the deal, he feels betrayed by the Kelpie, as if the closest thing to a brother had no more to do with him. And because of Survivor giving in to his conscience and the godly nature of his being, Morpheus tells the Kelpie, “You’re weak. Traitor! I’ll never be so powerless again,” which is when Morpheus decides to torment Mr. Samuels in the first place. Morpheus also feels weakened by something inside him, but casts it aside, feeling a thirst for revenge that’s so great, that it overpowers any sense of good in him. He’ll get revenge on all of them, even the Kelpie, he thinks. Morpheus takes on Lyn’s form in Mr. Samuels’ dreams so it’s more believable.
