In A Fleeting Eternity

Ky woke early the next morning to her door flying open. Her eyes fluttered open and she gasped as someone grabbed her shirt, hauling her upper body off the mattress. Her eyes locked on Aleth’s cruel face before she could understand what was happening.

“Hello, Ky!” he said loudly.

She blinked stupidly, trying to make sense of the world.

“You see this?” Aleth gestured at his face. A large purple bruise stretched from his eyelid to his cheek, the flesh swollen and puffy. A strange sense of satisfaction settled over Ky as she remembered her fight with him and she realized she’d inflicted the wound.

Suddenly his fist landed on her face, driving her down into the mattress.

Ky groaned and grabbed her face with both hands, rolling onto her side as she writhed in pain. The fire in her abdomen returned at the movement. A splitting headache throbbed through her skull once more.

“Fair’s fair.”

A moment later she heard the door slam shut. She took a deep breath and cautiously rolled over, pulling her hands away from her face, afraid that she’d see Aleth still in the room once she did. To her surprise, she was alone in the room once again. She rubbed her face and then curled into a protective ball, clutching her abdomen.

She felt like death warmed over. Her tongue felt thick and her head was so heavy, ever part of her body throbbing and aching. She faded in and out of consciousness the rest of the day, never quite sure if she was awake or dreaming, vaguely aware each time Yuane came in to offer her food or change her bandages.

The entire week passed in that way. Aleth would come in each morning to punch her, once, in the face and mutter about how he was going to continue exacting his revenge until the bruise on his own face faded – then Ky would spend the rest of the day resting alone in the room. As she began to spend more and more time awake each day, Yuane started giving her a tea to help her sleep throughout most of the day and night.

One morning, Ky woke before Aleth or Yuane came into her room. She was still exhausted, but had more clarity than she’d had in a while, and actually felt like life was returning to her. She pushed herself up into a sitting position and looked at herself in the small mirror on the opposite wall.

Her face was bruised and battered from Aleth’s abuse, and her hair was wild, with some strands curling behind her ears, and others sticking straight out from her head. She ran a hand through her hair lazily and then looked down at her body.

At this point, she wasn’t sure if she wanted to see the current state of her abdomen or not. She swallowed hard and pulled up her tunic. Yuane had stopped bandaging her abdomen a few days before, saying that the wounds needed to be able to breathe in order to heal. Her abdomen was thoroughly mutilated, and yet strangely artistic.

The lines on either side of her abdomen were symmetrical, with curved cuts sprawling outward from the deepest incisions. The cut just over her belly button curved inward on itself and almost looked like a jagged, gruesome flower. The leaves and thorns branching off it were shallower and were now simply fresh, pink skin. The deeper cuts were still dark red and scabbed over.

Aleth walked in as she was looking at his handiwork. She quickly dropped her tunic and looked up at him fearfully, chest going tight as she waited for the morning’s attack. He shut the door behind him, presence sucking all of the oxygen from the room. He meandered towards her, the jaunty gait agonizing as each moment that passed expanded the fear building in her gut. She closed her eyes as he neared, clenching her jaw in preparation for the blow to come.

There was a painfully long silence.

“Do you like the design?”

Ky cautiously opened here eyes, and saw Aleth standing just in front of her, gesturing at her abdomen. She swallowed hard.

“I’ve been working on a dragon on Tadaaki,” he explained, sitting on the edge of the mattress, just to her right. “I thought the flowers might suit you a bit better.”

Ky laid her arm across her abdomen protectively, looking at him suspiciously. “I’d rather flowers not be a part of my flesh.”

“Then you’d best learn to behave.” Aleth patted her abdomen ever so gently. “I’ve got many more blooms and leaves I’d like to add, but I’ll reserve those for times when you earn them.”

Ky nodded resentfully.

“Good news for you, I think the bruise has faded from sight,” Aleth said, rubbing his own face. “Which means that, so long as you decide to be agreeable, we can move from behavior training to job training. What do you say? Think it’s time to move past the rocky start?”

“Yes, sir,” Ky answered, not willing to risk “earning” any more abuse to her abdomen just then.

“Come on, then,” Aleth said, standing and starting across the room. He gestured for her to follow him as he opened the door to the hall.

Ky stood and hesitantly followed Aleth out of the bedroom. He led the way down a long hallway and down a set of stairs, then down another hallway and into a spacious study. Ky hesitated in the doorway, trying to take it all in.

The wall directly in front of her was completely lined with books, from the floor all the way to the ceiling. The bookshelves were so high that there were ladders with wheels connected to them, allowing for access to each of the volumes. Off to the left there were tall, narrow windows lining the walls. There was a messy desk in the back corner, and a long, narrow table in the center of the room with various books and scrolls and papers strewn across it.

“I often work from here,” Aleth said, walking to the desk and patting the wooden surface. He gestured at the table in the center of the room. “You will work from there. I will often oversee your work, but I will frequently expect you to work by yourself.”

Ky looked up as she sensed a presence behind her.

“Tadaaki!” Aleth said brightly. “Were you able to get it?”

“Yes, sir,” Tadaaki answered.

“Excellent,” Aleth said. “Bring it here.”

Ky stepped forward to make room for Tadaaki to enter the study as well. He walked towards Aleth, bundle under his arm. Aleth turned towards Ky and gestured towards her. “Ky, come here.”

Ky took a deep breath, steeling her confidence, and reluctantly walked towards the men standing next to the desk. Tadaaki was unwrapping the bundle he had brought in. Aleth looked at it briefly for a moment, then nodded approvingly, and looked back at Ky.

“Take off your nightshirt,” Aleth ordered.

Ky narrowed her eyes.

Aleth raised his eyebrows challengingly. “Tadaaki?”

Tadaaki turned towards her, reaching out to grab her arm. She stepped backward quickly, scenes from the palace and the road flashing across her mind’s eye. Both Aleth and Tadaaki had seen her unclothed at this point, and it’d be better to obey than feel their hands stripping her once again. “No, wait!”

She clenched her teeth and resentfully pulled the nightshirt over her head. She shivered slightly under the critical gaze of Aleth as he observed her for a moment, before holding something out to her. “Put this on.”

Ky took the item from Aleth and looked at it quizzically. It was made of coarse black fabric with wire ribbing running through it. She could see hook and eye fasteners and a zipper and laces, but it wasn’t clear how it was meant to fit on her.

“Tadaaki?” Aleth said.

Ky looked up fearfully. “I don’t know how!”

“It can’t be that hard to figure out,” Aleth said dismissively, reaching out to take the night shirt out of Ky’s hand. Tadaaki reached for the item in her hands. “Let him see it.”

Ky handed Tadaaki the contraption and crossed her arms over her chest. Lutalya was chillier than Lytias was in the summer, and the stone walls trapped in cool air. Tadaaki fiddled with the item for a moment then held it up. “Put your arm here.”

Ky did as she was directed, and Tadaaki helped her into what seemed like a gruesome vest. There was wire ribbing that ran along the back as well as the front, and all the extras that she had noticed were hanging from the left side in front of her, while the back of the vest was completely enclosed with fabric.

“I’m… not sure how these next steps go,” Tadaaki said apologetically.

“It can’t be that hard to figure out,” Aleth repeated, stepping forward. Ky resisted the urge to step backward and neared her. He reached down and began fiddling with the various options on the vest.

He carefully did all the hooks on the bottom layer of the vest. It was snug on her abdomen and chest, but not tight. The next layer of fabric was a bunch of strings, which Aleth threaded like a corset, and then pulled uncomfortably tight. Ky clenched her teeth, determined now to give him the satisfaction of a reaction.

Aleth tied the strings off and then did the zipper on the next layer of fabric, pulling the contraption that much tighter around Ky’s torso. The final layer was a thick flap of fabric that went from the left side of her body and wrapped around her chest and under her right arm, then hooked on the side with a few metal fasteners.

Aleth turned back towards his desk and picked up a small folded tunic and held it out to Ky. “Now put this on.”

Ky took the tunic and did as she was told, although her movements were awkward and restricted due to the contraption he had laced her into. She tugged the tunic straight and looked up to meet Aleth’s critical gaze.

“Turn.”

Ky turned in a slow circle, coming to a stop once she was face to face with Aleth and Tadaaki once again. Aleth looked at Tadaaki. “What do you think?”

“It’s not noticeable at all.”

“I agree,” Aleth answered, nodding approvingly. “It will do.”

“Do what?” Ky questioned.

“Convince everyone that you’re my male assistant,” Aleth answered. “Your rags served as well as they could, but are unreliable. This is a binder specifically intended to flatten your chest. You’ll wear this now.”

Ky nodded reluctantly. It was terribly uncomfortable. She could barely draw a breath, much less let her back slouch at all, without a wire jabbing into her side. But it was a small price to pay to keep Aleth’s favor.

“Your first assignment,” Aleth said, picking up a letter from his desk and pressing it into Ky’s hands. “Is to translate this letter into the Trade Language.”

Ky looked down at the letter in her hands, heart beating faster. It was a short letter written in Traditional Lytiasian. This was it – her only chance. If she translated this letter, her window for lying about her language skills would be closed forever.

“Go to the table and write it out on one of the blank sheets of paper.”

“I don’t understand what it says,” Ky said, keeping her eyes fixed on the paper rather than on Aleth. It was partially true. Most of her reading lessons had been in the Trade Language, and the little Lytiasian that she’d known in written form was fuzzy in her brain, she could only easily make out a word here and there at first glance.

“Work out as much of it as you can.”

Ky looked up to meet Aleth’s narrowed eyes. “I don’t know how to read this.”

“Don’t lie to me,” he hissed.

“I’m not lying!” she insisted. “I was a small child when I got taken from my home. Father only taught me to read in the Trade Language. It’s been too many years. I don’t remember Lytiasian.”

“Try to figure it out,” Aleth snarled, gesturing at the table. “Sit.”

Ky swallowed hard and walked towards the table obediently, gladly welcoming the order to get out of his arm’s reach. She sat at the table, glanced down at the letter once more, then looked back at him.

“You won’t be eating again until you transcribe that letter,” Aleth spat. “I suggest you drop the façade soon.”

Hey there, Shadow! Thank you so, so, so much for your help! :)
I'm doing more of a character-based review for you today.

What I Like
I really Ky and Yuane, even though the latter does not appear in this chapter. Ky seems to be a nice girl to me, and she doesn't deserve to deal with that b*****d.

What I Dislike
I dislike how Aleth is treating Ky. He probably did something to deserve that bruise. Kill Aleth. Kill him, kill him, kill him. Period. I don't know what's happened to him, but if he really believes "Fair's fair," he would've hit her once-- I'd still want him dead, though. Gosh, all of the males in your stories are just jerks...

Have a nice [*insert time of day here*]!!!

Ahaha no arguments at all xD Thanks for the review, Vil! I appreciate it!

I mean, really, they are! XD

No, thank you! It's a big help. I'll get to the other one later. :P

Shady!!

I actually decided to roll on straight to the next one, so here I am!

“Hello, Ky!” he said loudly.

I'm not even in this situation and it's only two lines in but I already feel so threatened, why are you so good at this

Suddenly his fist landed on her face, driving her down into the mattress.

"heal fast!!" he says, a few hours before PUNCHING HER IN THE FACE when she hasn't done anything in those hours

“Fair’s fair.”

This isn't even an excuse though?? "fair's fair" if that mattered at all, you would have gone through a whole WORLD of pain for everything you've done to Ky??? He's so contradictory and manipulative and gross he really is that worst. I want Noot Noot man back.

Also, if the whole "Fair's fair" thing is the reason he, without warning, woke her up just to punch her in the face, why did he wait so long? Like, was he just sitting somewhere in his mansion, and then had a horrible moment of realisation where he's like "oh my god!! I forgot to punch Ky for punching me!!!!" ??? like,,, what the heck, dude. What was even the point

The entire week passed in that way. Aleth would come in each morning to punch her, once, in the face and mutter about how he was going to continue exacting his revenge until the bruise on his own face faded

because this is productive and achieves a goal

“Do you like the design?”

Ky cautiously opened here eyes, and saw Aleth standing just in front of her, gesturing at her abdomen. She swallowed hard.

“I’ve been working on a dragon on Tadaaki,” he explained, sitting on the edge of the mattress, just to her right. “I thought the flowers might suit you a bit better.”

I have a sound to convey how this bit makes me feel because I'm not sure I have the words to, but I can't replicate it, so just,,, imagine me making a really disgusted sound.

BUT ALSO?????! ! !?!?!?! !?!?! EWUGHUAHUAGH?????

not willing to risk “earning” any more abuse to her abdomen just then.

how about "not ever"??

Tadaaki turned towards her, reaching out to grab her arm. She stepped backward quickly, scenes from the palace and the road flashing across her mind’s eye. Both Aleth and Tadaaki had seen her unclothed at this point, and it’d be better to obey than feel their hands stripping her once again. “No, wait!”

I would suggest putting "No, wait!" right after describing her stepping backwards, because putting at the end makes it feel really delayed, and I was wondering through it why Tadaaki hadn't already like, taken her shirt off by that point? Plus, it feels like a really quick reaction when she says this, so waiting until the end of the paragraph doesn't really fit in with the pacing of the scene (if that,, makes sense. basically, where you put dialogue matters with how it will be perceived, time wise, in relation to everything else).

It was made of coarse black fabric with wire ribbing running through it. She could see hook and eye fasteners and a zipper and laces, but it wasn’t clear how it was meant to fit on her.

me sometimes @ dresses or weird, complicated shirts

This is a binder specifically intended to flatten your chest.

yikes,,,, Yikes,,,,,,, like, I didn't expect anything different I guess, or I'm not surprised is a better way to put it, but,,, that's so controlling and awful. anyway, have I mentioned how much I hate Aleth?

“Try to figure it out,” Aleth snarled, gesturing at the table. “Sit.”

you know how you just figure out languages

if I could put the eyes emoji in here, I would. What does Aleth even WANT with Lytiasian? Is he planning on some underhanded activities to unseat the king? What kind of shady business is this garbage tomato getting up to?

I'm still really curious about Talia?? I'm SURE she's not actually going to come up, but I'd still love Ky to have some friends. You have a tendency to isolate your characters in terrible situations, and while it makes for good tension, I just want them to have SUPPORT and LOVE and FRIENDSHIP. Where's Alcan when you need him?

Also, this is more a comment on the last chapter but I'm Thinking about it now, but it's so sad to see that Ky tries to come up with all the ways that this is her fault for Aleth taking an interest in her. Like trying to come up with what she could have done different (in chapter like,, eleven or something), or why he thought she was useful, and it's... man, it's so heartbreaking. Ky's so optimistic and blames herself and she's so determined, I hope she doesn't lose any of that.

Anyway! That's all I have for today :D I hope you're having a wonderful time, and happy RevMo <3

OKAY THIS BINDER.

Gosh I love this binder. The symbolism behind it is SPOT ON and I am so proud of you for this. Aleth's control is vast, it's strong, and it's effectively keeping Ky within boundaries. She has literally failed to escape his clutches so far, and he has her (like everyone else) wrapped around his little finger. The binder scene may seem like it's a waste of time, but it REALLY IS NOT because it effectively dramatizes his presence in her life. And it's a really HUGE and AWFUL moment for Ky to accept this new, terrible master in this next chapter of her life.

This is just. GAH IT'S SO GOOD.

But bad 'cause I hate Aleth and I hope he dies horribly.

It's also still intriguing that Aleth is willing to go so far to keep her gender a secret still, like even Aleth isn't willing to open that can of worms right now. I wonder why he's keeping up the charade....

Also dude, the why Aleth speaks to Tadaaki here! Tadaaki has worked well and long enough to earn enough respect from Aleth as well. Even if his questions are rhetorical or he doesn't care about Tadaaki's answers, Aleth is still speaking to Tadaaki like half a human at least. So while he never warned Ky like he did about Yuane, I think Tadaaki still has some importance to him. It's a strange relationship Aleth has with his servants so far, like he likes his staff as long as they obey him without question. He likes them like someone would like their dog -- as long as they obey his commands, he'll feed them and wash them and shelter them and then some.

Gosh, I do not envy Ky's working desk. Aleth gets to hide in the corner, but Ky has to work in the center of the room. That means people see her before they see Aleth, which is completely backwards from the usual setup. His desk is in some dusty dark corner, and Ky is working where everyone could easily see what she's doing. Aleth seems to value humiliating his servants over giving himself the spotlight -- anything for complete obedience/control, I suppose, which oddly suits him as someone who prefers working behind the scenes gathering information.

I'm glad her plan doesn't seem to be going how she wants it to so far, though I haven't read the next chapter yet. Aleth easily sees through her plans right now as expected, so that's good character consistency. I look forward to seeing how this plays out, and gosh I hope Ky doesn't do anything reckless. I'm not so sure these plans are really the way to fight back right now. She could gain a lot of information if she just played her part as translator -- she's far more equipped than any other servant right now, I'm sure, for the sole idea of translating his mail.

Also, how has he gotten by without translations yet? I wonder if there's just a stack of papers he needs translated and just hadn't found anyone to help him out yet, or maybe he knows the language as well and just doesn't have time to do everything. Hmm... I'm sure we'll find out soon enough!

Hi Shady! I've returned for Chapter Eighteen :)

Wow, another great chapter! I know I've only read two, but I think you're pacing the plot really well - there's enough movement forward to keep it interesting and engaging, but it doesn't feel like you're skipping stuff to keep things going. So well done on that, pacing is always something I find hard!

One thing I find interesting is that while Ky seems to dislike Aleth, she doesn't seem too upset about some of the awful things he does to her, like she just accepts it (even if unhappily). I know you said she attacked him in an earlier chapter, so maybe she regrets this because of the unfortunate consequences it had, and doesn't want to mess with him again - but even if because of this she doesn't actually say or do anything out loud or physically, I'd like to see more of her thoughts about him - is she angry? sad? Does she yell at him in her head? Maybe that's not in her character, but I do feel like you could work some more of her inner reactions in.

Now onto some more specific stuff ~

Ky woke early the next morning to her door flying open. Her eyes fluttered open and she gasped as someone grabbed her shirt, hauling her upper body off the mattress.

This is super minor, but I think this opening paragraph could be stronger without the repetition of "verb starting with f + open" so close to each other.

“Hello, Ky!” he said loudly.

This is such a simple sentence, but in the context of what happens next it really conveys how despicable Aleth is. I'm really impressed by how you can pack so much meaning/nuance into small little phrases!

First of all, nice description! I would say that "death warmed over" is a bit cliche, so if you could find a different way of wording that, that would be great - but I love how you describe her pain in the next sentence! Also, tiny typo, "ever" should be "every".

Oooh now this is an awesome description! I can feel Ky's tension and fear reading this. I especially love how you describe the fear "expanding in her gut".

“I’ve been working on a dragon on Tadaaki,” he explained, sitting on the edge of the mattress, just to her right. “I thought the flowers might suit you a bit better.”

Ugh he makes me shiver. But also, this is interesting and very original, I've never read of inflicting wounds artistically!

Same with what I said in the other review, interspersing this sort of description up with some reactions/thoughts from Ky would be lovely!

She clenched her teeth and resentfully pulled the nightshirt over her head. She shivered slightly under the critical gaze of Aleth as he observed her for a moment, before holding something out to her. “Put this on.”

Gosh I hate Aleth. A very small nitpick here - you described Ky as resentful earlier in the chapter, too, when you said, "Ky nodded resentfully". Maybe she does resent Aleth quite a bit, I know I would, but I think it'd be great if you could work some other adverbs and emotions in. For example, if I was Ky I'd feel a little sickened by some of Aleth's behaviour. I don't know Ky's character well enough to say that that's a reaction she would have, but just something to consider.

Ky's abdomen is wounded and he's putting her into a binder? Goodness he has no heart.

Most of her reading lessons had been in the Trade Language, and the little Lytiasian that she’d known in written form was fuzzy in her brain, she could only easily make out a word here and there at first glance.

I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think this is technically a sentence? I think you need a "so" before "she", or maybe turn the comma after "brain" into a semicolon.

“You won’t be eating again until you transcribe that letter,” Aleth spat. “I suggest you drop the façade soon.”

Oh no!!!

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this chapter, and gosh is Aleth awful. I've read two chapters and I already hate him, so you must be doing something right xD I think mainly I'd just like to hear more of what Ky thinks about Aleth, but other than that there isn't much I'd change! Again, I hope this is useful! (Also yay you just posted the next chapter so now I don't have to wait to see what happens next :D)

Hello ShadowViper, I saw this in the green room and remembered that I reviewed the last part, so why not get two reviews? Hopefully this is beneficial to you. And like the last one, I will be focusing on grammar, since I am not that good on plot and character design, unless its obvious. Even then, I would not even be sure. So, without further ado, I'll get started.

As she began to spend more and more time awake each day, Yuane started giving her a tea to help her sleep throughout most of the day and night.

A doesn't seem like it is needed in there
She was still exhausted, but had more clarity than she’d had in a while, and actually felt like life was returning to her.

Commas, they get everyone. I still have trouble with them. That comma isn't needed there because of compound predicate - I don't know the what the deal is with that, but that's the problem here. You can look more into it, just type compound predicate in Google.
Ky cautiously opened here eyes, and saw Aleth standing just in front of her, gesturing at her abdomen. She swallowed hard.

Two things wrong: 1) I think you meant her and 2) another compound predicate problem. Just take out the comma.
Off to the left there were tall, narrow windows lining the walls.

Add a comma. This time, the problem involves introductory phrases.
There was a messy desk in the back corner, and a long, narrow table in the center of the room with various books and scrolls and papers strewn across it.

This time, remove the comma, something to do with compound object where there are more than two objects in a sentence.
He walked towards Aleth, bundle under his armp

I promise, we're nearing the end. Just add a before bundle
Aleth said dismissively, reaching out to take the night shirt out of Ky’s hand.

I remember this in the last part. Nightshirt is a word, so just remove the space.
And I think that is it. Overall, this is yet another great part to the ever-expanding story you created. I might read the ones to come.
With caution,

WaterSpout
