I'm not depressed.

In Poetry

I am not depressed, I refuse to admit,

Perhaps it's a virus, a bug that has bit,

A bite that has poisoned me to the core,

And left me to rot, it's shut the door,

I'm left in a room of such guilt and such pain,

Happiness that I could never obtain,

I am not depressed, I can still smile,

And laugh at the jokes every once in a while,

I can still make myself get out of bed,

And style the hair that's ontop of my head,

I can still party and dance with my friends,

But it's after the fun and festivities end,

When I'm left alone with my feelings and thoughts,

And anxiety turns my stomach in knots,

It's then that I feel that there's nothing at all,

That can keep me from spiraling, I've hit the wall,

The wall that makes me feel numb and drained,

And I wonder how I could be feeling such pain,

What do I have to complain about,

When others are facing such struggle and doubt,

There's a bed in a house that I can call mine,

And a family that generally gets along fine,

I excel in school and I have lots of friends,

So why do I feel that my world will end,

What right do I have to be feeling this way,

When others face poverty, hurt, and dismay,

I am not depressed, I will not believe,

Because it will change how others perceive,

People will know I'm the girl who is sad,

And my friends will all leave, but I won't be mad,

I get it; who wants to be seen with the freak,

With the girl whose cloudy future looks bleak,

Assumptions made about myself and my past,

Yet they will not bother to stop me and ask,

They won't walk with me in the crowded hall,

Or ask if I'd like to go to the mall,

Because I'll be the sad girl who always stays home

And walks the crowded halls all alone,

But I'm not depressed, because I can still smile,

And laugh at the jokes every once in a while,

I can still make myself get out of bed,

And style the hair that's ontop of my head,

I can still party and dance with my friends,

But it's after the fun and festivities end,

When I'm left alone with my feelings and thoughts,

Anxiety turns my stomach in knots,

It's then that I feel that there's nothing at all,

It's becoming so hard to keep standing so tall.

Now this is a poem that I can relate to. Great subject matter, especially for a site full of poets. :) All poets have been through this constant fight between happiness and depression. Usually I recommend for people to use more symbolism or imagery, but this poem doesn't need it. The pure words and honesty make the complex seem simple. It breaks down the struggle of depression into words that the average joe could understand. This is a big compliment since most people who haven't been through depression don't understand it. Keep up the good work!

Beautiful poem. :') I LOVE it!! The rhyming was great (I love it when poets actually take the time to make their poems rhyme. And no, that was not supposed to rhyme. :P)

The words really flowed and intertwined with each other as I read the poem. I can relate to the poem, and I think that's why I love it so much. :) <3

Keep writing,

I liked the poem. it flowed well and gave off a good overall tune. only thing is it was a little choppy. I couldn't tell whether it was happy or sad. it switched from a sad tone to a happier tone. It described the feelings of discontentment. basically the feeling of when you don't want to be who you are but rather someone else. Depression is a hard thing to go through. It is more than sorrow it is anxiety and its not always caused by something but I can relate to most of the poem.

Wow. Normally I don't like poems- I tend to just push them aside, but now I'll look more closely at them because this was fantastic! I love the way you express the point of view. All of the grammar and spelling looked fine to me, so nothing there, but the poem seems to sort of stumble at some points, so I would agree with sbitonti on limiting the use of the words and and but. This is a short review, but this poem really doesn't need much work done on it. Thanks for sharing!

Hii there!! Review time!

Okay, starting off, I have to say this is a very relatable poem. I mean, you've written it in such a way that all of us can really understand what the girl's going through.

Its really well written, but I might be having to contradict you on the theme though. ALthough, she might be denying it, she is kind of depressed. Depression does anot necessarily mean social exclusion. I know a lot of people who were depressed, but you would never know it.

Outwardly, they're all normal. But its only in small moments of weakness, when you can actually tell. Hmm, I have no idea why I just sprouted out those thing lol :D I guess you really got me feeling with this poem.

Normally, I stay away from poems so deoressing because I get irritated a lot when readng such stuff. But of course, this didn't leave me annoyed or irritated. It actually left me, at peace with myself.

Mainly because, I can relate to what she's going through. I guess all of us were able to, I mean look at thae number of comments! Whoa!

I'm not very good at poems, so I can't really point out any grammatical errors(if there were any).

So thats it for my really short review.
Excellent job!

I love this so very much as I can relate. I thought this poem was pure, and delicate AND straight-forward. I can't find anything severely wrong with it. I thought it did have a good flow, you rhymed quite nicely. However, as some of the other reviewers mentioned, your flow seems to get interrupted every once in a while. Sometimes the rhythm seems forced. I think this is because you have some extra words in each line. I would suggest playing around with it, maybe switching "lots" to "a lot" ..just like the little words. Try interchanging them until they roll around nicely with your tongue.
I would also try limiting words such as "And" or "But" to increase the simplicity of this poem even more. I love this poem though. Great work. :)

I really like this poem, it is very direct and easy to understand...and when your talking about things like depression sometimes it's better to be straightforward and honest. People need to hear the truth.
So I applaud you on your ability to not mince words, so to speak. However, overall it wasn't very fluid or graceful. It didn't feel very poetical, more like a story. If that's what you were going for, great job, but if it was meant to be lyrical maybe you should tweak it a bit more. It would only take a few changes to make it amazing, especially with the way you tie that type of deep sadness into everyday life. People sometimes feel the need to have a reason, a justification, for depression...but that's not the way it works. You just have to risk your pride once in a while and face the music, seek help. This is very inspirational, not because I myself am depressed, but because someone I love is and until now I begrudged them that right, and was angry toward them...wondering why they were unhappy, how they could possibly be so miserable. But the only thing I need to ask myself is how to help them feel even just a little bit better. Thank you for that clarity:)

This is a beautiful poem. You make it sound like you're trying to convince yourself that your not depressed. You giving all these reasons, yet you still realize that something is off. Something is still not right. You're not exactly how you used to be because something has changed. You've changed inwardly if not outwardly. But then there's the fear that people will notice and avoid you if you let yourself completely change. So you end up with that trying to be normal, yet not really normal way of being...
Yet still, you're determined that you are NOT depressed...
It's a great poem
Great job. :)
Sylvia.

I love this poem. I know exactly how you feel.
I really love how you repeat the beginning piece at the end and change the last line. It makes it stand out and directs the meaning of the poem. It's like you are not just saying you feel like you shouldn't feel depressed; you're going a step further and saying you're getting to the point where you can't ignore how sad you are.
Its a really powerful message to people who don't understand that their feelings are important enough to count as "depression" or "anxiety" or anything else. I used to feel that way a lot, and this poem really speaks to me.
Thanks a lot for writing something so beautiful! :)

You are incredible! I swear I have no words to describe such beauty. This right here, these lyrics are the most relatable and truthful ones I've ever read. You didn't just create feelings into words, YOU practically described life. This spoke to my soul more than my own heart. Right here, this demonstrates the art in poetry. I do not applaud you or congratulate you...I BOW to you. This is a MASTERPIECE. And no words are enough to express my gratitude at you for creating this. You remind me WHY I want to be a writer and for that I truly am grateful. :') <3

wow, this captures a lot of what I feel sometimes. This is a really great poem and I especially like how you mentioned that you can't be sad because if you did, you'd just be seen as selfish. I really liked this poem.

Quick question: Does anyone know how or if we can subscribe to people on this website? I am a new user and I'd like to know how to do that.

I believe the feature is called following. I usually click people's pictures until I spot the option.

I really liked it. Right now i'm struggling with some things in my life, and when i start to think about them, i feel selfish because i'm not thinking of the homeless people, or the starving kids in africa. This is really relatable to me and i love it! Good Job!

I think this is really good because you kept it simple and straightforward. No fancy words and symbolism, it just says what you mean.
The only thing I would really work on is the meter. You know, when you imagine reading it out loud, there is a rhythm throughout most of it that falters in a few little spots. I'm going to give you some examples of how I would tweak it, feel free to do what you want with it. Here are the lines with possible changes:
Line 3: It has left me to rot and shut the door; And left me to rot, it has shut the door. (it's means it is, not it has)
4: I'm left in a room full of guilt and of pain (one more syllable that is unstressed maintains the meter)
5: Happiness I could never obtain; There was happiness that I could never obtain
23: Why do I feel my world's starting to end; Why is my world about to end; Why has my world come to an end
25: When others face povert, ___, and dismay (fill the blank with a hardship that is one syllable)
28: People will know I'm the girl who is sad
32: Assumptions about myself and my past
33: They will not bother to stop me and ask
35: Or ask if I'd like to go to the mall
36: Because I'll be the sad girl who always stays home.

These were just the first way that popped into my head for each line. You might come up with better ways of fixing them, but I think that the lines I mentioned throw off the flow. Maintain the fluidity of the whole thing and it'd be so lovely. I really like it.

This was extremely helpful, thanks so much for your sweet words and imput

I enjoyed reading this a lot.
It's very relatable (especially to me)

You know people say that if you're not homeless or an alcoholic or jobless you can't be hard done by and some even think that depression is "people feeling sorry for themselves."

But it's not it becomes part of everyday life for some people and it's difficult to fight.

A very good piece of work and a good indication of what it's like to fight depression.

I look forward to reading more of your work.

This is great :) I can relate to this a lot, and I love the rhyming. I can hardly get a poem as long as this to rhyme and fit together so well! Well done :) You've really portrayed the feeling of battling deppression and trying to push it away, something many can relate to. I love this poem. Keep it up,

Hey this is really good! :D

Honestly, I love rhymes (I'm not a poet, but I do appreciate that technique) and I think HT already mentioned the whole last line not fitting the rhyming pattern, but it's cool how it ends with the last line out of the pattern right? Well, that's my thoughts anyways.

Also for this line: 'And walks the crowded halls all alone,' - I'd say take out that 'all'; you don't really need it, and it would fit the syllables in the rhyme better without it. Yeah about syllables: rhymes are really tough with them. One or two off and the poem gets choppy. Over all you did a great job with it though.

Hmm another thing is your constant ending in commas after each line; it looks good, but is every line really worthy of a comma? I think some of those are deserving periods, question marks or zero punctuation.

... Ooh for that punctuation thing, this one: 'What right do I have to be feeling this way,

When others have worlds filled with poverty and dismay,' - You're asking a question. Like, very obviously. Now if you really want to keep the whole comma thing that's fine I mean it still makes sense, it's just not strictly grammatically correct.

Wow this was supposed to be just a quick comment on how much I loved your poem. Ah well, guess I'll just say now that I really enjoyed how you captured the feeling of someone who is in denial; I mean, who wants to admit they're that girl, the one who is odd because she questions whether life is worth it and stuff? (I don't really know what other stuff, but I'm sure it's no sunshine and rainbows)

So, good job and keep writing and stuff!

This is a really beautiful poem. I feel like I can relate to it because I feel very depressed sometimes, even though I try to ignore it. What I really liked about this was the imagery and the rhyme scheme. The rhyme scheme really adds to the poem. It puts depth into the stanzas. I don't know if you've ever actually experienced what you describe here, but it does seem very heartfelt. This poem leaves the reader to imagine a depressed personal who is in denial-that is what you captured here. Bravo.

This is so beautifully tragic, and sadly true. Nothing about this feels like it shouldn't be there, and I can just imagine you sitting down and having the words flow out of you onto the page. Or computer screen. This poem touched me personally, because if I'm truthful to both myself and to you, this is me to the core.

I'm the outsider, the freak. Things have happened in my life that I will never talk about again, and people judge me for personal choices. But I can get up and go about my day. I can be happy amongst all the pain. One thing that I cannot do is express it, but here you have. And for that I thank you.

Grammatically speaking, I see nothing wrong with this, except that the last two lines don't follow the rhyming pattern. But, don't change it. In its' flaws there is perfection, and even though it breaks tradition, well, tradition is there to be broken. It works with it rather than against it.

Happy Writing!
HT

Reading your comment made me feel so happy. The last two lines stand out on purpose, but I'm thinking about making it a bit more subtle. Thanks so much for your critique and kind words.

I absolutely love this poem. It tells a story that is so true to many people. It's obvious that these beautiful words came from deep inside. It definitely flows well, no rhymes seemed to be forced. I also like the repetition of the title throughout the poem. Keep up the amazing work and stay beautifully true to yourself.

Thank you so much for your sweet words.
