Hello everyone! It is time to start creating your NaPo week threads! Please read the tutorial below for a complete step-by-step guide on creating a NaPo thread, theme, and how to post your poems!
To read more about what NaPo Week is, please this this page: NaPo Week 2024!
How do I make a NaPo week thread?
To begin, you will go onto the YWS forums page. Next, scroll down to the "Special Events" section, which should look like the image above. Underneath 'NaPoWriMo' you will see a section that says 'NaPo Week'. Click on that.
Once you do that, your page should look something like this. Currently, it is still empty on my screen, but by the time you are reading this tutorial, there will be other threads (like this one!), such as the badge thread, and others. Next, you need to click on the blue button that says "Post a new topic".
After clicking on that button, you will be taken to the page where you can type up and post your NaPo thread! Once you have typed it up, you can scroll down a bit and click the 'Submit' button, so that all of your friends can view it too!
What do I put in my thread?
Now that you know how to actually post the thread, I am going to give a quick tutorial on what to put in the thread when you make that post. To begin, let's start with titles and themes.
NaPo Themes/Titles/Subjects:
Typically, the subject line in your post is your NaPo theme. A NaPo theme is a line that sums up the vibes or direction that you will be taking your poetry this NaPo week. It can be very broad or very specific. It can be funny, or it can be serious. If you would like to view some great examples of NaPo themes, I recommend looking through old threads from previous years. Here are our some of our most recent 2024 themes:
Comments Welcome/No Comments:
When making your thread, you can choose from "Comments Welcome" or "No Comments". They mean exactly what they sound like. If you see a person has selected "No Comments" on their thread, please do not leave comments. Otherwise, commenting and leaving feedback is greatly appreciated and is a way to share your thoughts and impressions with other writers.
Main text section:
In the main text section of your thread, most people tend to share a bit about their goals for NaPo week. To view the badges you can get, take a look at the badge thread. Some common goals include writing at least one poem per day or leaving a certain amount of comments on other threads to show support to friends. Using Canva, you can also create some nice graphics for your thread to help set the mood and vibes for your poetry. For example, I used Canva to create this heading for one of my recent projects for NovMo, last year.
Once NaPo week begins, you can post your poems directly in your own thread. Feel free to be creative with visuals, spoken word, or any outlet that speaks to you!
Now that you know all about creating NaPo week threads, how about you go and create one for yourself? The first day of NaPo week is on October 25th! Have questions about creating your thread, or what you should post? Ask them here!
