In Rome, the great Colosseum stands
its ancient columns' pores filled
with gum from passing tourists hoping
to leave their mark in its crevices
and sometimes I wonder if
we do the same for our lives --
fixing things with gum and hoping
that time will not destroy it all.

sometimes it's better to be a tree
with a sturdy trunk, defiant against the storm.
winds may howl, leaves may fall, limbs
may be stripped and scourged,
yet the tree stand tall, its arms stretched out
reaching always toward Heaven
