What's the first sentence of your novel?

I'm not competing officially in NaNo this year, but it's still my favorite thing in existence. So I'd love to hear everyone's first lines! No titles, no context, just the first sentence of your novel (or the first sentence you wrote for NaNoWrimo, if you're doing an existing project). Go!

Standing at the top of the tallest tower of the palace, Haranya could have dreamed he owned it all.

"In our society, it is common knowledge that he who has money has power."

"He promised to keep her safe; that promise was a broken mirror."

It was late in the night when she found she had the power to change the world.

“Are you ready for this?” Mikael asked.

(He could basically be asking this about Nano in itself)

I'm not doing NaNo, but I've decided to write everyday during November, and I've started a new project just in time, so it's kind of like a watered down, won't-lead-to-me-failing-exams version of NaNo. Either way, here I am.

It's 1:11, so I make a wish.

The door is a rough-sawn slab of oak—half open, the darkness looming beyond.

I'm not doing NaNo, but I'd like to make some kind of progress during November. This is the current first line of my project, but it will probably change:

The day had dawned bright, which disappointed the bride's little sister.

"The pencil danced lightly over the blue-lined paper, leaving a thin film of iridescent grey in its wake, the smokey scratches layering and joining, becoming a coherent image, the details coming into focus."

"Yes, you can travel with us," said Mr. Kindley, "but you'll have to wake yourself up and get ready before the luneset."

“You’re really going to love Lyca,” Mom said, trying to break the silence that fell when Natasha nodded off a while back.

Technically this nano is for revisions, but I still ended up changing my first line, so!
