The Nothing Night

“Didn’t know anyone was interested. People usually don’t wanna hang out with me.” Before Irene could respond, Sophie opened the door and people turned towards them.

“Hey! It’s the frog paladin!” Someone shouted, and a bunch of people cheered.

Irene’s eyes widened. “I always want to party with you if you’re going to be a celebrity.”

“Celebrity is a strong word,” Sophie said, but she was glowing with the attention.

“Don’t be modest, girl! Everyone seems to love that you’re here.” Irene elbowed her.

Sophie smiled wide, then turned back to her. “What do you want to drink?”

“How do they have? I could go for a frothy glass of honeyed mead.”

“You betcha!” Sophie said, then started through the crowd towards the kitchen, leaving Irene to follow behind.

Irene looked around the room as she followed Sophie. There was an extremely drunk man playing the fiddle, but it didn’t seem to affect him enough to make him sound grating. He just seemed to have trouble standing. A group of people surrounded him, cheering, their drinks sloshing.

“Quite the crowd here.”

“I know!” Sophie said cheerfully. “They’re all really nice. They like to ask questions about the Lady Cordelia, and most people don’t like to do that, so it’s really nice.”

“Nice people are always… nice.”

Sophie nodded seriously. “They are.” She wormed her way into the kitchen, then checked to make sure Irene had followed.

Irene walked into the kitchen and took a deep breath. "Fruit. Honey. Nuts. Oh this is where the good drinks are."

Sophie wasted no time in pouring both herself and Irene drinks, before grinning. "Bottoms up!" She said, before downing it all in one gulp.

"Hell yeah!" She downed the entire glass in one go.

"Hey." A man saddled up next to Sophie, a sly grin on his face. "How ya doing? Listen, you're the frog girl, right?"

Sophie beamed at him. "Yeah, that's me!"
