My grandparents had insisted that they splurge on a first-class ticket, so I was one of the first ones on the plane. I shoved my backpack under the seat in front of me, and leafed through the little pamphlets stuffed in the seat's pocket. There was a SkyMall catalogue, an aviation magazine, and a little brochure about what to do in the event of a water landing. I chuckled a little, thinking about the irony of that--if a land landing was just called a landing, then shouldn't a water landing be called a watering?
I peeked in the brochure. "Assume the crash position," I read. What was the crash position, anyway? All I could think of was the joke from Airplane!.
As I dug my computer out of my backpack, I leaned out into the aisle for a better look at the cockpit. The door was still open, and I could see the pilot's seat inside. Jet cockpits were always really fascinating to me--there were so many little switches and buttons and other gadgets.
Then the pilot and copilot walked in, and a flight attendant closed the door. I turned back to my computer and opened the internet. Hmm, what could I do until the plane took off? ...I could always stalk my friends on Facebook...
Then a flight attendant walked over and tapped me on the shoulder. "No electronics, please," she said. "Can I get you anything to drink?"
"I'll have a Coke, please," I replied, stuffing my computer back into my backpack. The flight attendant went to get my soda, just as the first wave of passengers walked in.
