There was a peal of thunder, and then the rain started pelting down.

Then the shipwide intercom crackled to life. "There seems to be a storm ahead," the captain said, his voice tinny. "We'll be experiencing rough seas." Now I was glad I'd left my cap on--my break ended in an hour, so I'd have to run back to the bridge in the rain.

"Some storm," Sunny muttered.

"Oh, it's just a nor'easter," I said. "We should be out of it by nightfall. It's supposed to get cold the next few days, though."

"Hey!" Boots called, looking at something behind me. "You're gonna get soaked if you stay out there!"

I turned around. There was a girl in black shorts and a blue bikini top running across the deck, one hand over her head to protect her hair. She sprinted over to the cafe and flopped down into a chair, breathing hard.

Hey Ipod, do you mind if I rework the timing of the sinking scene a little? This was very vivid when I imagined it the first time. If this doesn't work, I'll edit it. Also, I thought we hit an iceberg. Sorry for the long post. :)

Will - 8 PM

I twirled my cap on one finger, wondering how to pass the remaining time. The captain had left, so, as the ranking officer on the bridge, I was in charge. My shift had started two hours ago, about when the Mockingbird sailed out of the storm, and although I had another six hours to go, I was already irritated. The ship was luxurious, yes, but it had some serious design flaws. Not only was it almost too big to control, it had the widest turn radius I'd ever encountered. I had ordered the second officer to adjust our heading an hour ago, and it had taken us a full three minutes to find the proper course. That was just too long, even for a ship this size. I had piloted aircraft carriers that handled better than this. The Mockingbird was almost completely unresponsive, so it was a pain to steer.

It was already dark out, the sky studded with stars. "Sure is pretty tonight," I commented. Then I took a closer look at the sky. Something was...off. There--something was missing. Spica, the brightest star in Virgo, was gone.

"Hey, Halley," I said. "Can you see Spica?"

Halley, the second officer, glanced out the window. "No, I can't," he replied. "Clouds, maybe?"

"No, there aren't any clouds," I mused. "Someone call the crow's nest; have them take a look at Virgo."

Just then, the ship's intercom buzzed. "Iceberg at twelve o-clock!" someone shouted.

I didn't waste any time. "Hard to port, full reverse!" I ordered. Halley yanked the wheel as far left as he could. After a few seconds, the ship groaned, and started listing slowly to port. I ran outside and watched as the iceberg materialized out of thin air, rising up out of the water like some great black specter. "Come on, buddy," I muttered to the ship, gripping the railing tightly. "Come on, buddy..."

Then there was a horrible screeching noise--the sound of tearing metal. I ran back inside, nearly slipping in my haste. "Hard to starboard!" I ordered. "Bring the stern around!" I ran over to the wireless control panel and grabbed a radio. "All crew to stations now!" I shouted. "Prepare for evacuation if necessary! Hull breach on the starboard side, deck eleven forward and all decks below! Wireless, send out a distress signal!" I pressed a button and switched to a wideband frequency. "Mayday!" I shouted, lapsing into my military jargon. "This is Officer Marino of the Mockingbird! We have a hull breach and flooding! Repeat, we have a hull breach and flooding! Mayday!"

I set the radio down and strode back to the center of the bridge. "All stop, seal off decks one through three," I ordered, trying to stay calm. If the flooding didn't reach some sort of equilibrium, the entire ship could go under. "Send up flares, and start loading lifeboats. Children and families get priority. Keep the ship upright. Halley, you have the bridge."

I ran outside and looked down at the lower deck. "All passengers, report to lifeboat stations on the upper deck!" I shouted. "That's the top deck! Do not go back to your rooms for any reason! Get a life vest and report to the top deck!" I saw the three I'd been talking to take off, the girl in the bikini almost washed overboard by the waves from the iceberg. The sky lit up with colored flares, and I could hear shouting on the lower decks. I buried my face in my hands. This was complete chaos. We had to buy ourselves more time.

"There seems to be a storm ahead," the voice I assume is the captain comes through the radio as the sky began to spew down buck loads of rain, “We will be experiencing rough seas.”
‘You don’t say,’ I think to myself.
Will (I think he said his name was at some point when we were ordering, mutters something to himself and pulls him hat down over his head.
A breeze of Icy wind sweeps past me and I shiver.
"Some storm," I mutter hugging my jacket to me and trying not to freeze to death.

"Oh, it's just a nor'easter," Will says, trying to comfort us, “We should be out of it by nightfall. It's supposed to get cold the next few days, though."
Boots isn’t paying attention though and soon he starts yelling to someone in the distance.
"Hey! You're gonna get soaked if you stay out there!"
I turn, attempting to catch a glimpse of who he is talking to.
A girl with really long blondish hair is sprinting towards the café wearing nothing but a blue bikini and dark shots.
She sprints over to the café and the shelter it provides, flopping in the closest chair.
Then a loud chime rings out and Will jumps to his feet looking around.
A bunch of other men dressed similar to him are walking towards the stern of the ship.
Will jumps to his feet, as if noticing the time for the first time, nods to us and follows the other men to the front of the ship.
“Cya,” Boots after him.
“Yeah… Bye,” I mutter as we watch him go.
Then I turn to the other girl on the ship, Boots apparently has the same idea.
“Hello,” Boots says to her, smiling, “Cold, huh?”
I shiver trying not to shiver just thinking about how cold it has become.
The girl is staring at Boots oddly and I smile thinking of how I did that to.
I sit down across the table form her.
“Don’t mind him.” I say to her, “That’s just Boots.”
She nods and then looks at me strangely.
“I’m Sunny,” I say.
She smiles a little, “Alysha.”
The lady working in the café walks to the table, delivering Boots his food.
We sit there for a while; talking, and I don’t realise just how long we have been sitting there until I happen to glance outside the café and see the starry sky.
Then the ship jolts to a stop beneath our feet and Boots almost trips over.
A screeching sound passes through the ship a second later and a massive chunk of ice lands on the deck near the cafe.
I jump up from my spot at the table and run outside.
Men clad in uniforms are running around everywhere yelling into radios and looking panicked.
Another message comes through the radio.
“All passengers, report to lifeboat stations on the upper deck,” there is a brief pause, “That’s the top deck! Do not go back down to your rooms for any reason! Get a life vest and report to the top deck!”
I gasp, this can’t be happening.
Then I mentally kick myself- ‘get a grip of yourself, Sunny, don’t be an idiot.’
Boots looks around nervously looking uncertain and Alysha stands and stares at the block of ice on the deck.
The Boots loses his look of fear and steps forward.
Grabbing my arm and looking at Alysha, “Come on! You heard the guy- to the lifeboats.”
He starts running towards the lifeboat station and I follow almost getting swept away by an incoming way.
Just in time I manage to grab the railing.
I turn to see Alysha hanging on in a similar situation to me about a metre away.
“Come on,” I say to her a walk slowly away from the railing, trying not to slip of the soaking deck.
Unfortunately tons of other people have the same idea and in seconds I’m surrounded by a group of people.
I can’t see Boots or Alysha anymore.
I struggle through the crowd looking around for them with no success.
Realising I probably won’t be getting anywhere for a while yet if I stay here I move towards the higher deck looking out for my friends and trying to find out where exactly the lifeboat station is.
Somewhere towards the back of the crowd I catch a glimpse of Alysha but looking again she is gone.
For the first time all day I think about Kat.
Then I hear a voice from behind me.

"What happened?!" the captain demanded, storming onto the bridge.

"We hit an iceberg, sir," I reported, stepping out of his way. "No one saw it in time; it just appeared out of nowhere! And then the ship wouldn't turn--"

"Alright," the captain interrupted. He surveyed the instrument panel quickly before addressing the officers again. "I think we can stabilize the flooding," he said. "But we should still evacuate the passengers. I'd say we have about an hour. Mr. Marino, Mr. Halley, I want you loading lifeboats--"

Then something on the instrument panel lit up, accompanied by a loud beeping noise. The captain ran over to the panel. The beeping was coming from a pressure gauge. "There's a bulkhead breach on deck twelve," the captain said, his voice almost a growl. "That cuts our time in half. Forget the lifeboats for now. I want every one of you checking decks for passengers. Marino, you take deck 20, Halley has deck 19, and so on. Make sure every passenger gets to the top deck. I'll wait until the last moment to close the emergency doors. That should stop the flooding, but you have to be back up here before that happens, got it? Let's go."

"Yessir," I answered, starting toward the door. I adjusted my cap and ran out onto the deck, taking the stairs to deck 20 two at a time. Deck 20 was teeming with passengers, and I literally had to shove people out of the way to get through the crowd. "Everyone to the top deck, please," I instructed as I went. "All passengers to the top deck."

Soon a stream of passengers began to form, and I had to fight to make my way across the deck. I would have to pick up my pace if I wanted to circle the whole deck in time, but with this many people in the way, it was almost impossible to move fast. There was the cafe I had eaten at earlier, but the three passengers I had met were gone. Wait--there was one of them!

"Sunny!" I called. She was following the crowd, taking the long way around to the grand staircase. "There's another stairwell this way!" I led her over to a nondescript door, which I propped open. "That leads straight to the top," I said.

"Have you seen Boots and Alysha?" she asked.

"No, I haven't," I answered. "I'll keep an eye out for them. Now hurry up."

"Sunny!" I hear someone call out from behind me. I turn to see Will, walking towards me while watching nervously as the water rises. "There's another stairwell this way!" He explains, leading me over to a small door to the left of the balcony. "That leads straight to the top,” He explains and I nod, taking a step through the door.
“Have you seen Boots?” I ask, turning to face him, “Or Alysha?”
He shakes his head, “No, I haven’t seen them yet,” he says shortly, “I’ll keep an eye out for them though.”
Another crowd of people rushes frantically past us, wanting to get to the top deck as quickly as possible.
Will turns, trying to get their attention as they run past but in their panic they barely notice him.
He turns back to me.
“Hurry up,” he gestures to the door then looks frantically back to the people.
Another wave hits the ship and even from down here I see people being knocked over by its force.
From where I stand I can see water leaking into the corridor, and then my eyes focus on a single passenger- a woman, maybe older than me by a few years- struggling after the others up the passage.
Another wave knocks her off of her feet and I wait for her to get up- she doesn’t.
I leave my spot at the door and rush over, past the rising water, to see if she is okay.

"No!" I ran over and dragged Sunny away from the edge of the ship. "It's my job to look for passengers," I said, "not yours. Now get to the top deck; that's an order!"

I shoved Sunny toward the stairwell again, and then turned back toward the edge of the ship. The tidal wave had receded, and the woman Sunny had seen was gone. I slapped the railing, and then ran back to the stairwell. I had done all I could do here; the captain would need me on the bridge.

The top deck was so full of people that I had to push clumps of them out of the way to get to the bridge. The captain and the other officers had already returned, and were clustered around the instrument panel.

"Mr. Marino," the captain said. "Is deck 20 clear?"

"As clear as it will ever be," I replied.

"Good," the captain said, relieved. "We've stopped the flooding, so we won't sink, at least not all the way. The lifeboats are below the water line, though, and there are at least a hundred people overboard. Mr. Halley, go outside and remind everyone in the water to stay calm. Tell them we're working on getting them aboard. Mr. Marino, we're checking systems."

Halley went outside, and the captain and I started carefully scanning the instrument panel, piece by piece, to see what was working and what wasn't. The rudder chain had been damaged, and the engines were toast, but at least we still had electricity. We'd be able to survive for at least a few days, if we had to. "Hey, look at that," I said, pointing to something. "The club on deck 12 is still playing music. How useful."

"That's funny," the captain chuckled. "...Well, our day can't get any worse, can it?"

Suddenly, the door burst open, and Halley ran in, his face a mask of horror. "There are sharks down there!" he gasped. "There are sharks in the water! Oh, God--" He stumbled across the room and threw up into a garbage can.

I flopped down into the navigator's chair and let my head thump against the table. A hundred passengers dead--before we even did anything. How many more would die before we got out of this mess?

Who is he to order me around? I mentally yell as I walk away.
It takes me about a minute to reach the top deck and this time when I fall over It’s not because of a wave, (actually the water seems to have calmed down somewhat) It’s because I’m swept into a massive crowd.
I pull myself to my feet and push through the crowd trying to find a clear spot.
There isn’t one.

I hear the sound of music in the distance.
In all this the band can still be paying music?
How? And why would they even want to?
The next thing I know I’m being push hard against the railing.
I see lifeboats being loaded and I even see my friend Kat about to board one.
The crowd gets a little smaller and I can imagine that on the other side of the ship more lifeboats are being filled.
The lifeboats are lowered.

That’s when I hear someone yelling in the distance.
“SHARK!” I lean over the railing- though not so far that there is any chance of me falling- and my heart almost stops.
If that’s possible.
There are sharks in the water, surrounding the lifeboats.
People are starting to… disappear.
Even from where I am right above them I can hear the panic going on below.
I push myself away from the railing and into the crowd- far away from any edge of the ship.

This cannot be happening.
That’s when the storm decides to re- starts itself- knocking the ship around like it doesn’t weight a thing.
More people wash over board- all of those people who were standing anywhere near the edge and a good part of the crowd all knocked into the sharks.
How many people are left? How many will survive?
The remaining passenger (which isn’t many) are standing right in the middle of the ship so as not to get knocked out by the waves.
Which only offers some protection because- as the boat rocks- more and more people are slipping right into the water.

That’s when I see the person hanging on for dear life at the railing.
They won’t make it much longer… unless…
“Don’t!” I hear someone yell from behind as I run- in one of the ‘clear’ stages (when the waves have calmed down for a second.) I grab the person’s arm and try to pull the back over.
That’s when another wave knocks over the ship almost sending us both into the sharks.

I grab hold of the railing just like the other person has been doing all along, only just managing to hold on.
Something grazes my leg sending a sharp pain spiralling though it.
My arms are aching terribly only after a minute or two.
I can’t hold on much longer, I think to myself.
That’s when I see the water.

Dark as it’s always been but stained with red.
Determination fills me and somehow I manage to pull away, letting go of the railing with one hand to grab the other person and practically throwing myself over the right side of the railing dragging her along with me.
There’s a loud ‘Thud’ as we both hit the ground making me fear that one of us has broken something.
That’s when I notice who the other person is as she looks up to me with a thankful smile.

Alysha.

I feel another wave coming and motion for her to crawl toward the other people so that they can help hher.
“What about you?” I hear over the thudding of the waves and I shrug barely managing to reply with an “It will be easier for them to help us if we go separately.”
She nods and I wonder if they will.
Help us, I mean.
I grip tight onto the railing now letting myself be swept into the same position as I was before.

She crawls ahead and just vaguely I see someone help her to her feet and while I’m waiting for the next set of waves to pass I look to see who helped her.
Through the water I see a bright orange jacket and smile knowing just who that is, while breathing a sigh of relief knowing both of my friends are okay.

Someone gestures for me to come next and I let go of the railing and begin to crawl.
When I’m halfway there though a wave crashes over me and begins to pull me back- over the railing and into the sharks.
Before It can though someone grabs my arm and pulls me to the safely of the crowd.

After I was pulled to safety , I crawled across the deck , when I got to the other side I saw sunny crawling across the deck , a tidal wave came and hit the deck and started to wash her overboard , I ran across the deck barging people who wouldn’t move and I made it just in time to grab her , I pulled her up and said " we have to run across the deck or we will never make it back" , sunny ran across first , when she got across , something flicker in the corner of my eye , when I looked up at the massive tidal wave coming I saw a massive ship , it was heading straight for the deck , I ran as fast as I could across the deck , sunny was watching me run across , I disappeared in the massive wave , after it washed the other boat on then off , I was nowhere to be seen , the boat had grabbed onto my leg, and dragged me , My head hit the railing , as I was dragged across , everything seemed as it was going in slow motion , my leg had a nasty gash from where the ship had caught onto me , after ten minutes of sitting there , I got up and stumbled across the deck , another wave came and hit the boat knocking me over , I got back up and made it to the other side where i collapsed from losing to much blood , I had a large cut across my stomach , and I had one on my head from where the debris of the other boat had hit me , (lucky for me I caught the railing)

“We have to run back to the deck,” she says grabbing my arm and pulling me back away from the edge, “or we’ll never make it.”
Somehow I force myself to nod and make my body start to function through the shock- enough for me to run from my place near the railing back to the crowd (or what’s left of it anyway.)
I turn to see someone sliding backwards, over the railing.
But this time it’s not me- it’s Alysha.
Her leg is caught one of the ropes attached to something and at first I wasn’t quite sure but I swear it looked like a boat.
Everything goes black.
When I open my eyes again the storm has stopped completely.
Everything appears calm- except for the fact that the ship is a wreck.
The mysterious ship I may or may not have seen yesterday is nowhere in sight.
I look around, craning my neck (even though it makes my head hurt like hell.) to see who else is aboard.
There aren’t many passengers left only a few scattered over the ship.
None look properly awake.
That’s when my mind starts to process what happened yesterday and I bolt upright- which sends jolts of pain through my body.
I look down.
My arms are covered in cuts and bruises.
Then I hear a sharp sound coming from the edge of the ship so I push myself to my feet and limp over to the edge.
The remainders of a lifeboat are grazing against the side of the ship.
That could have been what Kat was on…
I try to hold back a sob knowing that my friend is most likely dead.
That’s when I remember Boots and Will and…
Alysha.
What happened to her?
Is she ok?
I look around desperately for a second without success but then I spot the clutter over at the railing.
…Alysha.
Slowly I walk over and just as I reach her she opens her eyes and tries to smile.
“Some cruise ship, Huh?”
I smile.
“Definitely,” I say, sarcastically, “Wasn’t one of my best moments.”
That’s when I notice the pool of stale blood surrounding her.
I kneel down on the deck beside her, all of my medical training coming back to me suddenly.
That’s when I hear someone walking up behind me.

"Alysha, are you alright?" I called. I had run outside after we'd gotten the flooding under control. The captain had asked me to do a passenger head count, but told me to take as much time as I needed. We all needed a little break, he said, and oh man, was he right. Poor Halley still hadn't recovered from his shark problem, and my knees were still shaking, even though I'd been up on the bridge most of the time.

Sunny knelt in front of Alysha, a first aid kit at her side. The deck under Alysha was covered in blood, but Sunny seemed to know what she was doing. I crouched next to her, giving Alysha a once-over. "You need any help?" I asked.

"No, I'm fine," Sunny said, without looking at me. She was concentrating fully on staunching the flow of blood. Alysha looked sort of glassy-eyed--probably a little traumatized. There was a gash on her leg, a clean cut, not like a shark bite would be.

"How did that happen?" I asked.

"Boat propeller, I think," Alysha mumbled. "Washed up on deck."

"Hey, Sunny," I said. I didn't want to distract her, but I felt I had to apologize. "Sorry for yelling at you earlier. Just trying to minimize...casualties...I guess I panicked a little."

Everything started to go black .. I was going in and out of consciousness , I was still bleeding , sunny was still trying to patch me up but she couldn't work out were I was still bleeding from , I was still sitting there , so i decided to text my father , will and sunny both asked: "who are you texting" , i replied "my father, they both said at the same time again , "who is your father?" , i said back to them , "the captain.. who was suppose to be steering the ship , instead of will.. my father knows the ins and the outs and how to turn this ship faster then anyone , he was foolish to leave the ship under the control of someone who dosen't know the ins and outs , no offence to whoever was steering the ship ".. I muttered to myself " my poor ships is ruined", sunny heard me and said "Your ship? this is your ship?", I Said "Yeep it was mine for my last birthday , it took a while to build."

Alysha seemed to be feeling a little better, so I figured I could get away with a little teasing. "Wow," I joked. "First you call me incompetent, and then you tell me I trashed your ship? ...No, I'm just kidding. But it was my shift, and if there was some sort of secret rudder, or something, I wasn't told about it." I continued talking, mostly to myself. "Man, I studied hard for this, too...looked at the blueprints and everything...

"Well," I said, standing up. "Alysha, I'm really sorry about your ship. If you two are going to be okay for a while, I should go check on the other passengers. I'll be back later this evening." I saluted Sunny and Alysha, trying to save what scraps of my professional image were left, and strode across the deck toward the other clumps of people.
