Carpenter

"Stop where you are!" someone called above me. I turned around, still holding the purse in my hand. Great, someone probably thinking I stole it.

Seeing as I really didn't want to get stopped and asked questions like name and phone number, I decided to keep running. I knew where the lady was and it was only a block away.

Peeking over my shoulder, I saw the person still following me. Jeez, how many "heroes" are in Chicago anyway?

I turned a corner and there she was... getting in a taxi. Perfect. I slid down below the window and, just as she got in, tossed the purse through the open window on the other side.

"My purse!"

Mission accomplished. Now to lose the crazy chasing me. I rolled under the taxi and darted down an alley. Problem was that this alley was a dead end... just my luck.

He jumped down impressively from balcony to window to wall to balcony to dumpster and landed on the ground in tact.

"Nice," I commented, looking up from where he came from. "I think that was a good 20 stories."

"You shouldn't have run," he said seriously.

I shrugged. "Eh... I always love a good run through the night. It's relaxing."

Something told me he didn't seem amused. "You didn't take care of that dirtbag back there."

"Oh, you saw that? I thought I did ok. The lady got her purse back and I don't think that thief will be doing any more after what he's been through tonight."

"Oh I know he won't," he said. "I took care of him for you."

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about how I'm positive he won't be robbing anymore ladies once his jaw is reset."

He beat the guy up? It was a petty theft and the guy didn't even fight. He just ran! He didn't need to get beat up!

"He was an amateur," I argued. "No harm done! Just who do you think you are beating the sucker up?"

That's when I noticed the cowl, the suit, the tail... great. "The Fox, I should've figured," I muttered and crossed my arms.

"You've got a lot to learn, kid."

"Who you calling kid? You've gotta be what? A year older than me, maybe?"

It looked like he wanted to say something else, but I looked at my watch. 8:30. Crud!

"Well it was nice meeting you Foxy, but I'm late for a very important date. No time to say hello, goodbye, see ya!" My fist absorbed the brick behind me and I gave him a good knock on the head before taking off past him and running. Oh, she is gonna kill me.
"Oh please don't tell me you're archaeologists."

"Do you have a problem with archaeologists?"

"I'm a time traveler. I laugh at archaeologists."

Black Beauty

I was in my apratment, and sliped on my cut-off top, my black Mask that just covers my eyes and my boots, with my leather jacket. I put on tight black skinny jeans and walk outside, seeing a couple guys beat up a robber. I smirked to myself as a guy ran for me and grabbed me by the arms, "You. Saw. Nothing."

I smiled and kicked his knees out, and punching him, pinning him down. "I would warn you not to touch me."

I let go and he ran away when I let him go and I giggled, "Baby."

I walked over to the few guys and flash a smile at them, leaning against the wall. "So. You guys are...??" I asked. "I'm Black Beauty. But you can just call me B if you want."

The Fox

Damage report; minor bruising on left temple, Cowl is not compromised... 89% shock absorbed... Should I assign Target Protocol to Assailant; Carpenter?

X-Ray could not comprehend emotions, yet I swear I heard a tinge of concern in her monotone voice. I got up from the ground where he had knocked me, then climbed swiftly back to the rooftop. The night was still young, and yet I found myself still focused on the kid.

Carpenter had caught me completely off guard; an almost impossible task. It was a mistake to disengage X-Ray for even that small conversation, yet the dependency I had on it scared me still.

X-Ray, Mark Carpenter on map and keep Travel Protocols to him on the dashboard.

The kid was impressive, and apparently late for something. It was irresponsible of him to put personal matters ahead of his duty. I knew it had to be something close to him because any scheduled criminal activity or gathering of heroes would've been marked on X-Ray's Data Relay.

Thinking about it, I'd about had enough of the kid's antics; First leaving a perfectly healthy criminal in the center of the city where opportunities for more crime were endlessly, then attacking me when I was trying to help him, and finally putting a personal matter before his duty to the city... it was shameful.

Actually X-Ray, Engage Travel Protocol to location; Carpenter immediately, and prepare Combat Protocol 4 The command was given within minutes of the kid running off, and I had no doubt I would catch him within the next few.

Combat Protocol 4 was designed to be evasive and irritating, It placed Travel Protocols first, then low-level Attack Protocols and almost no Defensive. The Carpenter could probably smash through anything I could muster with the gear I had equipped, so I planned to lure him him into a strategic position and then switch to a more offensive protocol and beat some sense into him.

Engaging Travel Protocol; Target Carpenter X-Ray announced, and then I felt each of the grappling guns detach from their holsters and find there ways to my hands, already locking onto gargoyles and rooftops for quick swinging.

I leapt off the rooftop and began swinging through the rooftops. Three minutes, forty-six seconds later, I was on top of Carpenter. He was still sprinting, and looked intent on reaching wherever he was going quickly.

Beginning Combat...Disabling Unnecessary Protocols...Good Luck X-Ray's words were again tinged with care, but I brushed the thought away and swooped down to intercept Carpenter.

I caught him on the left shoulder with the full momentum of my swing behind me, both feet knocking him back a good ten meters. He groaned and picked himself up.

"You!" He cried after seeing me land. I had detached the grappling hook from its location and stored the actual gun back in it's compartment. Three available travel protocols outlined themselves in gold, and a single Taser Claw slid into my left hand.

"I have somewhere I really need to be right now, so If you'll let me pass I'll let you walk away from here with all your bones intact" He spat vehemently, obviously angered that I interfered with his plans.

"Just like you did that criminal I suppose, that's your problem. Violence is crude but effective, and if used right, will stop a criminal much more effectively than a simple warning" I replied without emotion.

" Enough of your crap!" He yelled and turned both of his hands into flat slabs of stone. I threw the Taser Claw with a deadly curve, yet he still caught it and crushed it in his stone fist. He began to run at me, bringing his other hand down in a savage blow.

I rolled to the side and launched myself at him from behind, releasing two more Claws (Web and Taser) into the back of his head.

The Taser Claw harmlessly hit his shoulder, but the Web engulfed his entire head. I followed up by hammering both knees into his shoulder blades, bringing him down.

I got up and stood at his head, looking down at his squirming body. His arms were completely stone now, groping around blindly.

"As I was saying" I began but never finished. Carpenter's hand got a hold of my ankle and flung me over his head with inhuman strength. I slammed into a pair of trashcans at the end of the alley at which we had been fighting in.

The pain was intense, X-Ray informed me of severe bruising and a possibly fractured hip; more movement would surely break it.

Carpenter rose to his feet; his hair had turned into a thousand tin blades and cut away most of the Web.

"If you'll know what's good for you, you'll just lay there" He said, and began to run away.

X-Ray, Grappling Gun, now! Both of the tools fell out and I grabbed one with my right hand. I took a second to aim, and caught Carpenter with the hook right before he had turned away onto the street.

He yelled in pain, and quickly turned the injured area into stone. He grabbed the grappling hook and wrenched it out of his shoulder, crunching it up into a warped piece of metal within seconds. His eyes were burning with rage when he turned around.

I spat out blood and made my way up. There we stood, injured but ready to fight. I was about to launch the second hook when an inhuman roar pierced the air and a mass of scales and wings landed in the alley, shredding the stone floor with talons.

"Enough!" the dragon roared.

What's a teenager idea of a "perfect night" exactly? Probably at home lounging around eating popcorn and maybe getting with his girlfriend possibly. My idea of a perfect night, taughting and picking on super hero's with a gaint ego. That's my idea of a "perfect night" so there I was hovering around town until my eye caught a certain gaint dragon. Night Dragon. I knew this guy, never made direct contact with him, but we have seen each other as I was hovering around in the sky high above town, normally where most people won't mind me. He prowls around stoping robberies or saving a cat from a tree or something like that. But it wasn't until a recent vision of mine that tells me he's more important to the survival of mankind, so it was time I made an encounter and started pestering him to find his weaknesses and streaghts. I hover near where he was and see him about to engauge some thugs.

"Perfect timing." I think.

I get to see what he is capable of.

This guy was really starting to tick me off. I had him down on the ground finally.

"If you know what's good for you, you'll stay there," I commented before taking off. He obviously didn't get the message when I felt a sharp pain hit my ankle. I looked back and saw his hook around my leg. Immediately turning it into stone to avoid damage, I ripped it off and smashed it. THAT WAS IT!

We both stood ready to attack each other when suddenly a huge dark creature roared above us.

It landed in between and roared again. "Enough!"

I quickly grabbed my head and so did the Fox. That shout... he did it telepathically. What was this thing?

"It was entertaining watching you for a while but you need to stop before you kill each other," it remarked. There was no mouth moving, just a ringing voice in my head.

"What the heck are you?"

It shot me a "really" look. I need to think before I speak. The wings, the scales, the eyes, it was obviously a dragon. I've just never really seen one before.

"The Night Dragon," the Fox remarked. "Uses telepathy to communicate. Interesting."

"What are you, some kind of nerd?" I called. Our fight wasn't finished and I really needed to get going. "It was nice meeting you Night Dragon, but I've got to go and this guy seems to keep wanting to get his butt kicked." I motioned to Fox. He glowered at me and looked about ready to pounce, but the dragon was still in his way.

"I saw the whole thing with the thief. You two could have handled it better."

"Oh really? He was a petty thief. Probably wanted the money for a good smoke or food. Besides, the lady got the purse back. How would you have done it?" I challenged.

Spoiler
I'm away for 1 day and look how much I miss!

Carnage

I hung upside-down from a street lamp, waiting to see who would pass underneath. The freeway was a never-ending stream of vehicles, metal coffins for my victims. Soon the angel would receive its gift.
One car caught my eye- the little flags fluttering on the bonnet gave it away. I had seen it on the television; the President of the United States of America was coming to meet the mayor. I grinned, writhing with excitement.
Holding in my killer tendencies for as long as I could bear, I slithered and swung from streetlamp to tree to billboard, pursuing the President's vehicle.
Ahead, the freeway was blocked by traffic, a police barricade stopping the masses of cars getting through. The President's saloon cruised past in a lane of its own.
I jumped, landing on an SUV and leaving a prize dent in the roof. My recovery was quick, and in seconds I was charging along the line of automobiles in pursuit of America's praised leader.
I slipped and fell between two vehicles, bouncing off one to land on the tarmac. A woman, eighty or so, screamed when she caught sight of me, and soon everyone was yelling and trying to reverse. Good- a little carnage goes a long way.
I scrambled past the woman's car and continued on foot, trying to close the distance to the barricade before the President passed it. The police began to mobilise- I heard a gunshot, felt it penetrate my abdomen. The angel reacted, screaming in my mind. I screamed out loud, jumping and bounding towards the police like a charging lion.
The first officer fell before I even knew I had killed him. Another tried to pull his pistol; one bite severed his carotid artery. The President's driver accelerated- he had noticed me at last. Hopefully the noble President would be cowering in his seat, praying to his god and sobbing with despair.
Another shot cracked past my ear- I impaled the officer with a tendril and flung him towards the President's car. Two more officers tried to block my way, attempting to tackle me to the floor. The did not know the power the angel afforded me! In the blink of an eye I had them both by their scrawny necks, hurling each in turn toward the oncoming car.
I grabbed the bumper of a police cruiser and began to lift it on its end. The President's driver accelerated towards me, headlights growing steadily more intense as the vehicle approached. I flipped the cruiser, rolling it over to crush the oncoming saloon's bonnet, but misjudged the throw. The President's car hit me full on, throwing me clear over the roof to land on the tarmac as it stormed past. I tried to ensnare its wheel with another tendril, but succeeded only in shredding the tyre. The Presidential vehicle limped away; I did the same, slinking into the shadows to lick my wounds.
At the end of the day, when the sun is gone and the light is lost, the shadows will play.

"Carnage, how thoughtless" I sneered. "Perhaps a little more planning would do your schemes good"
Carnage whirled around, in a fighting stance, but relaxed -if you could call it that- when he saw me.
"Alvah" he snarled. "I'm surprised you'd show yourself around here"
I waved a hand arily.
"Oh, things are going to happen soon. Things I don't want to miss" I said

I was walking through the streets in my uniform, and snaking around, It was night...So thats my que. I took my phone out of my boot and checked the time,

8:35

I was suppost to be meeting Cody up for a 'Unofficial Date' at a Coffie place at 8:00. I ran back to my apartment and took my mask off, letting my long blonde hair fall loose. I changed into skinny jeans with a tee shirt that cuts off above my belly button.

I ran back out with my phone in my pocket and made my way to the 'Wormhole Coffie Shop' and walked in, relieved to see he wasn't there yet either.

Thank god...

I sat down at the counter and ordered a Lattè.

I looked at the watch hidden under my trench's sleeve. 9:15. Oh, she was definately going to kill me.

I couldn't wait for the dragon's answer in my head. "Listen, it's been great, really and I mean that... but I've got to get going."

"Putting your personal life before your duty? That's irresponsible."

"Maybe you'd understand if you had a personal life," I shot back. "See ya."

Just then more police cars sped past the alley and kept going north, sirens and lights ablaze. ... great.

"I'll take care of them," the dragon said telepathically before taking off. The Fox gave me a look before rolling his eyes and pulling out another gadget that sent him sailing off in pursiut of the cop cars. I smirked and started jogging towards the Wormhole, a coffee shop with that old back to the future theme. I remember my grandma telling me it used to be one of great-grandpa's favored movies. Now it was a retro masterpiece.

I was on the side of the shop's building where I stashed a backpack full of clothes. Removing my goggles and coat, I traded them for a sweater and khaki pants and changed back to Cody Bridges.

She was sitting in a booth with an empty latte cup... how long had she been there waiting?

I cleared my throat and she looked back at me. "Uh, hey," I said nervously. "How long have you been here?"

"About a half hour. I was running late too."

"Look, Skyla I'm sorry. Something came up and I tried to get here as fast as I could--"

"It's ok. I was late too, remember? These things happen."

I chuckled nervously and rubbed the back of my neck. "Uh... yeah."

Spoiler
Probably should have added this in his profile but no matter how cocky Cody can get, he is a gentleman and easily gets nervous around girls.

He nodded and puts his hand behind his neck, "Uh...Yeah."

I nodded back and bit my lip. "You wanna sit?" I asked ordering another lattè.

Haven

I wandered home from the shops, enjoying the feeling of sunlight on skin, music filling my ears through my senheiser headphones. It was a beautiful day. I found myself waiting at traffic lights next to a mother, arms full of groceries, on the phone and trying to keep hold of her bouncing toddler, running around her ankles. I looked down into the baby blue eyes of the child and it hit me like a flash.
Mothers bag wound slip. She let go of him for a moment. Just a single second to rearrange before grabbing him again. But her hand would meet empty air. She would look up in time to hear a screech and a thump before she fell to her knees bags and all, sobbing.
I surged back into the world around me in time to see the bag slip. Without a moments hesitation I took half a step forward, both blocking the boy from the road and grabbing him a footstep from the edge. His mother looked at me thankfully.
"The just get away from you sometimes, you know?"
My reply was a smile, a nod and a knowing wink at the boy. My PDA buzzed in my pocket and I looked down at it. No obvious message, just a single red light flashing in the top left corner. Time for the meandering to stop. I hurried home, shut all the curtains, opened the attic and clambered up the ladder before shutting myself away in the soundproof bubble that was Watchtower.

Overwatch

I pulled my voice altering headset on, folded the mic down and swung round to the array of screens. News reports of Carnages assault on the President. A map overlaid with positions of odd energy spikes.
That'll be taser gauntlets,, I thought non-chalantly. I hadn't spoken to X-ray in a long time. I almost missed the semi sentient AI and what did he call himself? Ah yes. The fox. How very droll.
"Sir I have an urgent data pack for you," Chimed the automaton voice of S.A.I.D the semi-automated intelligence device.
"Ok what's so important it needs a direct feed?" I asked.
"Presidential assault, increase in petty theft around the down town area and heroes fighting."
"This I have to see." I reached back and lifted a patch of skin and hair on the back of my head, revealing a USB port and grabbed the cable. The direct feed was the pride of my technological advances. Information straight into my head, no messy learning in between. Anything I forgot could be looked up on the back up system. No information being lost in squishy grey matter. Even Protocol 0 was installed into my brain.
Should i die, my brain would wipe itself and S.A.I.D would fuse with my digitised back up. Overwatch would live forever.
I sat back waiting for anything useful to pass on, or another heroes request for data while the connection caught me up on the events of my brief excursion to the real world.
I have looked into the eye of the storm and stared it down. I am an adrenaline junky and i know no fear.

Night Dragon

I took to the north, then shifted back to human form in midair overtop of a building. A common street gang as it were. Vandalism of a local convienent store with a side of bank robbery. Just what I needed to spice up a boring night. I snuck in through an open window, but saw that my quarry was taken by the one with the mechanical arm. I growled. "That's not fair. I had them where I wanted them. They were my score." I tripped the person, then took off in a hurry. I went to my apartment, changed into Amos Runestone, then stepped into the library to read on dragons. Several times, I had to take notes on a writing pad to see if there was anything I- as the Night Dragon- might have that is similar or close to what I found in books. In the meantime, I kept quiet and to myself.

Overwatch

The download finished and I unplugged the cable from my head before carefully recovering and sealing the port. I could almost feel my mind whirling, organising and cataloguing the events I had missed.
The presidential assault had me worried. Carnage may be a maniac but it was the event which followed that had me in such discomfort. A grainy CCTV image of an under pass. A large writhing figure, so clearly Carnage, limped into view and then was approached by a figure I only recognised to to his stance thanks to the appalling video quality. Alvah and Carnage. There was a mix that should have all good heroes shuddering.
This infighting amongst the heroes confused me. They were all on the same side. Fighting for a better tomorrow. A few putting themselves on the line for the good of the many. But I could read the situation a mile off. They were fighting over methods. One considered the other too forgiving or no committed enough. Eventually, when your putting yourself on the line for your method, your temper frays.
The one little thing that gave me hope was Black Beauty. She didn't exactly wear an outfit you could ignore, brain of a super computer or not. But this reason connection to Carpenter, well, that was a team I was eager to see although whether they knew about each or not was at this point unclear.
Time to initiate a little contact. A single message to each of their cell phones with no clue that they were both receiving the same task.
~Further details on Presidential assault. Information advantageous and time sensitive. Phone bank on the corner on Monroe and Oberst. Midnight. #Overwatch#

As I was talking to Cody about who knows what I got a text. I pulled my phone out and looked at it.

I sighed when I realized what time it was. 11:50

And that's way on the other side of town.

I grabbed my Jacket and looked at Cody, "It was really nice talking with you but I've gotta go, see you later?" I flashed a smile and began walking out. When I got to the street I walked into a small ally. I took off my shirt, revealing my belly-button showing shirt I use when In secret identity. I threw my hair into a ponytail and put on my mask that covers my eyes, I was all covered in black.

I started running towards where Overwatch told me to meet him. I got there at exactly 12:00 and leaned against the wall, waiting.
