One second I am sitting with Emmett, trying my best to hide my thoughts, the next second Cutter is standing next to me.

As accustomed as I was to watching my thoughts, I was shocked. It was almost on impule I thought, You stupid selfish idiot, why'd you have to show up?

Cutter gave me a look. Emmett's face mirrored it. Why did I have to be the only person who could't read people's minds. Suddenly, a car pulls up in our driveway.

"Your dad's home." Emmett observed. My face drains color.

"That's not my dad." I choke out. A blonde girl, maybe in her teens, steps out. She looks at us, and grins. She starts running towards us.

"Run! Get back.... I will hold her off!" I yell at Cutter and Emmett. They look at me like I am insane. The girl aproaches us.

"Well, well, I imagined I would only find one Mage at most today. Instead, I have three." She grins.

"I'm not..." I start, but Emmett puts his hand over my mouth. The blonde pulls out a gun.

"Let her talk." She says. Emmett's hands are almost robotic as he releases me.

"We are not Mages." I say. The girl points her gun at my head.

I aproach the group. Three mages, or two, I can't tell. I wasn't developed enough yet. The taller of the two boys steps infront of the girl. So two, then. And they would protect the girl, if it came to a fight.

"Let her talk." I say, taking out my gun, the boy removes his hands.

"We are not Mages." the girl protests. I point my gun at her forhead.

"Try again." I tell her.

"What do you want?" She asks, stalling.

"To kill you." I grin as the boys faces turn up in a snarl. I ready my gun to shoot. Then I feel myself against the ground, the breath knocked out of me. I grab my gun to shoot, but they are gone. Stupid transporters! I was so close. They were mind-readers, though. They would have known my every move in a fight. They wouldn't have stayed here, though. They would move on, very far away.

I had been so close!

Cutter,

I pant, and close my eyes. That had been too close. Way too close. Of course, what I really wanted to do was teleport back up and beat the shit out of that Magekiller, but I couldn't do that without revealing the rest of my friends.

"Are you two alright?" I ask Lorei and Emmett. They nod. The others look scared.

"What happened?" asks Millie with fear in her face.

"Magekiller, outside," I say, "She saw us. She knows that we have some connection to this place."

I stood there, shaking. There were two reasons why. One reason, was because I still was used to transporting. Second, the obvious reason, I was afraid. But I wasn't afraid for myself, I was afraid for them.

Someone helps me, almost pushes me, to sit down. I can't even focus enough to look who it is.

"She assumes we have moved far away from here." I hear Cutter say. Someone presses a drink into my hands. I take a sip, instantly I feel better.

"Are you all right?" I ask them. They nod.

"I can't believe I was so stupid, I shouldn't have taken you outside. I am so sorry. I just thought you would want to go outside, I didn't even consider the risk. I thought we would go unnoticed." I say. Then I start crying.

Cutter,

"It's alright, Lorei. We know you were just trying to help," I say gently.

"Yeah. No one could have predicted that that Magekiller would've turned up," Emmett says.

"We don't blame you," I say firmly, "The biggest problem that we have now is that the Magekiller saw you. Which means if she sees you coming in and out of this house she'll know you instantly, and target you."

Lorie, Emmett, and Cutter all come back, frightened. Millie asked what happened, and the obvious answer was that a magekiller almost got them.

"I told you!" I said to them. "I told you it was a risk! Now you understand just how dangerous it is out there." I felt a little bad because I was yelling at her and she was already angry at herself, but I was just so...frustrated.

"I'm sorry." Lorie said.

I knew she really was, but I was still a little disappointed. I knew something like this was going to happen. I should have gone outside to get them back, so I sort of blamed myself. Either way, it was a mistake.

I need to leave, before the tension in the room makes me explode. I walk through the door, and into my room. My dad walks in. I hadn't put the rug over the trap door.

"How long have you been hiding them?" he asks me.

"Who?" I ask.

"Don't lie to me, Lorei." He says, still calm.

"Almost three years." I admit.

"Do you take me for a fool, Lorei? I knew the whole time. But you need to be more careful to prevent what happened earlier. I would be happy to help your friends, though." he says with a smile.

"So you won't turn them in?" I ask in disbelief.

"Of course not. Maybe you should stick to just bringing your friends in your room for the sunlight. Otherwise.... well, you know what can happen. I want to help you." He says. I run up and give him a hug. I could only picture how happy they all were downstairs. This would mean better things for them, much, much better things.

Cutter told me what was going on upstairs, and I was extremely happy! At first I was a little worried, but then her father said that he was on our side, and I felt a little better. Cutter would've known if he was just saying that and it was just a trap.

When Lorie came back down the trap door, I went immediately over to hug her. "Oh, I'm so sorry for yelling at you!" I said. "This is so amazing. We can all enjoy some sun without too much risk." I added in the 'too much' part because I knew that there was always going to be some risk, but things were definitely headed in a good direction.

"I can't wait!" Millie said.

Emmett smirked. "This is going to be fun...finally!"

Cutter smiled too. "It'll be so much easier to get chocolate!" he said with a chuckle.

We all laughed along.

I grin cheerfully, thinking about how much better life is going to be now Lorei's dad is there to help protect us. Everyone else's moods are high, rubbing off on me and Cutter so we probably look a bit mental with our giant smiles.

Suddenly, a twinge of fear and worry. It's Lorei. I sneak a peak at her, noticing that Cutter hasn't picked up on it yet - the feeling is almost lost in the excitement of the mages. I reach for her hand gently, giving her a soft smile. "You'll be fine," I murmur in a low voice. "You know that I - we would do anything to protect you."

I can't help but feel guilty at the reassurance I'm giving her - she's in danger and we both know it. But somehow I can't help but want to make sure she's safe. The overwhelming sensation of protectiveness returns from earlier, and I have to resist the urge to grab Lorei up in a fierce bear hug.

I glance around the room, noticing Rae sitting at the edge of the room, looking concerned. Much as I hate to let go of Lorei, it's probably getting weird to be holding on to her for so long, so I make my way to the petite girl, and give her a super-cheerful smile. "What's up?"
Elizabeth: "There will come a moment when you will have a chance to show it. To do the right thing."
Jack: "I love those moments. I like to wave at them as they pass by."

I try to control my disapointment as Emmett goes to talk to Rae.

I go over to Cutter, "I think that everything is going to get easier around here."

"Yeah, it should."

"Now that we've got my dad on our side. I had no idea he knew the whole time." As I say this, I do my best to smile, but I can't. I am just to worried about the 'too much' that Catherine had put in her sentence.

That stupid Magekiller could show up again, just to make sure we have moved. And if she did come back....

There was always a chance the Mages would die. And I was terrified for them.

Cutter,

I try to smile and look upbeat about these turns of events, but I still worry. Lorei won't be able to show her face in public any more. Being seen with a mage, no, TWO mages, will not be forgotten. I have a feeling that that idiot magekiller will be back. With others. I read everyone's merry, happy thoughts, and that helps, but....

And that's when I hear the violent, murderous thoughts filter through from above ground. Magekillers.

"Magekillers." Cutter says.

"Please tell me you're kidding." I tell him. He shakes his head.

"How many?"

"Three."

I meantally curse.

I hear raised voices from above us, yelling. I hear my dad's voice, the girl's voice from before, and two new ones.

Then, I hear a gunshot. A cry of pain, then nothing. Emmett puts his hand over my mouth to keep me from screaming.

"Keed quiet." he says. I try to run, but he holds me back.

My dad was probably just shot! I think. Emmett nods, and I struggle even harder to get free. He puts his arm around my waist to keep me from breaking free. There is some talking upstairs. I hear the door to my room slam, and then nothing.

We burst into the mansion. a large assortment of servants are running around. I ignore them, and go straight upstiars.

"I can almost feel where they are." I tell my companions.

"The bedroom." Trae says, pointing to a closed door. I walk in. A man stand there, on a over-decorated rug.

"Who are you?" He asks.

"Where are the mages?" I demand.

"I have no idea what you are talking..." The man starts. I motion to Jess, and she shoots him.

"Search the house." I say.

"They are here somewhere, I can feel it." Trae says.

"I'll take downstairs." Jonathan says. I nod, and watch as they leave the room. I would seach here.

Cutter,

I project my thoughts into all of my friend's minds. Emmett reinforces my thoughts with his.

"Magekiller right above us. Searching room. Won't be long," I think, forcing myself to be calm.

We can all hear the thud-thud-thud of the Magekiller's shoes.

"Is there a good back exit that you can get to from here?" I think at Lorei.
