So I'm starting up a blog and I want it to start with a bang. So why not start it up with interveiws from real, every-day writers just like the readers?

If you want to help out and go on with the interview, please answer these questions;

What genre do you write, and why?

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?

Your favourite era?

What's your view on Tolkein?

Your favourite name ever?

What are you working on right now?

Your favourite thing about your latest project?

Your favourite book, and why?

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

How about colour?

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?

The genre you dislike the most?

and lastly,

Why do you write?

Thanks, all! I'll post in the Lounge when the blog is up ^^ I sure hopes it lifts off!

What genre do you write, and why?

Fantasy, mostly. I feel it gives me so many more options than anything else. Romance has to be gushy, horror has to be violent, realistic fiction has to be tragic, mystery and suspense are always predictable, and comic books are...well, creepy.

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?

I only started writing a couple years ago, actually. And I have no idea what it was that I wrote first...something corny, no doubt.

Your favourite era?

The time of the early Roman Empire, when Augustus was Emperor. That, or the Colonial 1800's of England.

What's your view on Tolkein?

He was a pioneer for the entire fantasy genre. That being said, I didn't like the Lord of the Rings when I first read it.

Your favourite name ever?

Olivia!

What are you working on right now?

I'm working on (sort of) a story that takes place in Venice, several hundred years ago. It's full of treachery, lies, and all that good stuff. I haven't quite decided if it's a fantasy, but who knows!

Your favourite thing about your latest project?

The setting.

Your favourite book, and why?

The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien. Unlike LotR, it thoroughly describes the world in which his stories take place, and it narrates the entire history of it, as well. If not that book, then the entire Harry Potter series, for obvious reasons.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

A bald eagle.

How about colour?

Blue or red.

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?

"Um! Holy f****** sh**!"

The genre you dislike the most?

Romance.

Why do you write?

Because I enjoy it, and I've always loved the idea of creating my own book for others to read, instead of the other way around.

I hope I could help!

What genre do you write, and why?

Fantasy mostly, because it has no limits.

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?

In the third grade. My first attempt was a odd story that was a mix of Xena and Lord of the rings. Needless to say I scrapped that idea.

Your favourite era?

The Dark Ages were cool, but I would never write in them.

What's your view on Tolkien?

I think he's a genius. I couldn't get into the books because I don't like High Fantasy like that, but I do recognize the talent in his writing.

Your favourite name ever?

Bishop

What are you working on right now?

A series of four books that center around a Phoenix.

Your favourite thing about your latest project?

The characters, they amuse me.

Your favourite book, and why?

Frankenstein is one of my favorite, The Hobbit( I don't know why I like this over LOTR)

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

A tiger.

How about colour?

Orange.

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?

I'd smile.

The genre you dislike the most?

Mystery, and Romance.

Why do you write?

Because it gives me the opportunity to make people's live worse then mine without going to jail.

What genre do you write, and why?

Fantasy, fantasy annnd fantasy. I love coming up with my own magic and worlds. (There's the odd poem in there too. I write poetry mostly for emotional release)

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?

Poetry or prose? Poetry I started writing when I was about nine. I think it was a narrative poem (in French) about a statue telling its history. Prose was a 70-page novel at about 13, that I'm still in the process of revising. The drafts are worlds apart, so I'm not sure if they count as the same story, haha

Your favourite era?

The Mughal Era in India

What's your view on Tolkein?

No real view. The only thing of his I have read is a partial essay on what fairy-tales and fantasy in general are, to him. I enjoyed that a lot.

Your favourite name ever?

Haha, I'm majorly biased in my favourite name. It's my MC's name, Kerani.

What are you working on right now?

Novel

Your favourite thing about your latest project?

A cynical, sarcastic, witty, kick-butt MC.

Your favourite book, and why?

I am Apache, by Tanya Landman. It is a rather dark book, with fantastic craftsmanship and a really good character voice. The twists and turns were awesome.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

A cat, probably. Tiger, lynx, or snow leopard.

How about colour?

Need you ask? lol Pink.

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?

Holy smokes, you gotta be ever-lovin KIDDING ME!

The genre you dislike the most?

Toss up between romance and horror. Romance reads as boring and somewhat sappy to me, while horror creeps me out to no end. Horror wins for the nightmare potential.

Why do you write?

It's a whole other world I get to explore, one that keeps me sane to escape in.

What genre do you write, and why?

Fantasy, it allows me to express my imagination without boundaries. In the fantasy genre, not even the sky is the limit, nor death itself.

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?

I started writing stories at twelve, and have loved it ever since. Though, I suffered a major Writer's Block in High School for about two years. The stress of being in an absolutely unbearable school really takes a toll.

Your favourite era?

I always like to look toward the future, there's too many wars and other atrocities of humanity in the past.

What's your view on Tolkein?

I absolutely loved The Hobbit, but his other books were quite dull, they dragged on and on endlessly. I really, really liked the movies based on the Lord of the Rings books though.

Your favourite name ever?

Mine. :P

What are you working on right now?

Like Rosey, a novel.

Your favourite thing about your latest project?

Frantic explosive action.

Your favourite book, and why?

Jurassic Park, because it is beyond amazing. Even after seeing the movie countless times as a youngster, the book still had my adrenaline pumping, and my heart accelerating. Michael Crichton is a genius, able to combine preachy science, pulse pounding, eerily realistic suspense, characterization, and action.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

I'd say Falco peregrinus (Peregrine Falcon). Freedom is the greatest virtue, and the Peregrine Falcon is the fastest of all avians.

How about colour?

Blue. :smt017

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?

Oh my gosh! Am I dreaming! :smt026 :smt015 :smt026

The genre you dislike the most?

Romance.

Why do you write?

Because I would go mad if I didn't. My environment is not for the weak. I just needed something to keep my mind off of my constant worries. Writing allows me to just focus on the fates of the protagonists, but that is not what I focus much on. No, I put a lot more emphasis on the world of the stories.

What genre do you write, and why?

I write in a different mix of genres, but it's mostly historical fiction. I love it because things are grounded in a more realistic setting and that makes me seem closer to the characters. Also, the past is full of such interesting wonders.

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?

I've been writing since before I can remember, probably when I first learned that it existed. I'm not exactly quite sure what I first wrote, but I know it consisted of a lot of princess stories.

Your favourite era?

In history? I'll say from about 1700-1800, for a number of reasons. America was growing and prospering; France was a world of elegance, the food, dress and culture were magnificent; I could go on and on.

What's your view on Tolkein?

He's a good author who was definitely committed to his work, whose books were the basis for three very awesome movies.

Your favourite name ever?

I don't know, I have a lot of names I like. For a girl I like Briar Rose, and for a guy I like Jack.

What are you working on right now?

A novel about the ending of the golden age of piracy and the struggles as they began to die out-told for the point of view of a girl who gets mixed up in their affairs.

Your favourite thing about your latest project?

The fact that I've been working it for so long and grown so attached to the characters.

Your favourite book, and why?

The Hunger Games. The writing is magnificent, the idea is fully original, and it's exciting, the perfect blend of romance and action.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

Hmm, probably a dolphin. They're cool, and besides, I love the water so much and it would be so awesome to live down there.

How about colour?

I dunno, maybe dark red?

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?

Scream, cry, run around in circles and hold and go for ice cream to celebrate.

The genre you dislike the most?

Fantasy. There is definitely good stuff out there, but most of it is the same recycled crap nowadays.

Why do you write?

For a large majority of reasons. It's fun. I can get ideas in my head, convey a message to the world, create friends and enemies I never knew, discover a place I could never visit on my own, and just relax and apply my talents.

What genre do you write, and why?

Fantasy, because it's a way for me to create my own worlds and characters, most of which end up being in medieval settings. I'm fascinated by the Middle Ages, which plays a part in why I like writing sword & sorcery.

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?

Ever since I can remember, I used to grab a massive amount of white paper, fold it all over and write stories about unicorns, pegasi, and dragons.

Your favourite era?

Medieval.

What's your view on Tolkein?

Good writing; got a little long-winded in the LotR about elves and their history, though, which really slowed down the story for me and made me lose interest.

Your favourite name ever?

Oh wow. That's hard. Either Joshua (Josh for short) or Alex.

What are you working on right now?

Several novels, all of them fantasy.

Your favourite thing about your latest project?

It's a little different type of fantasy for me; it's set in the Gothic Renaissance-type time period. Yes, it was inspired by Sleepy Hollow. ;)

Your favourite book, and why?

Generically speaking, I'd say the Ranger's Apprentice series, and more specifically the Battle for Skandia. It's a really well-rounded fantasy series: adventure, suspense, humor, awesome battle scenes, creatures, etc. And there's a lot of character development; we actually come to care for them.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

A horse, because I love them.

How about colour?

Black. Or blue. But not both, 'cause that'd mean I'd be bruised!

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?

*stares at it in shock* "Uh...mom? Is this real? Are you sure??"

The genre you dislike the most?

Hm...I really don't care for historical fiction if it's about American history...I can only take a few romances, too. Most of the rest is too boring for me.

Why do you write?

Because it's a way for me to get all the images in my head down on paper (or the computer). I think, if I didn't write, then I'd become a movie director, just so I could get those scenes and everything out. I love having control over everything in my worlds and settings; I can make my "perfect fantasy," whatever I'd love to read.

What genre do you write, and why?
I don't have a particular genre I write on. It can be anything from horror, suspense to romantic fiction. But mostly I like to write thrillers. It's just about the ideas.

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?
Okay so I started writing when I was thirteen. I wrote a mystery story for kids which was pathetic. No one, even a child would read to like it. But as time passes everyone improves.

Your favourite era?
I love the 18th and 19th century of England. the feel, the style, atmosphere all makes me nostalgic even though I am not from there.

What's your view on Tolkein?
Sorry,who Tolkein?

Your favourite name ever?
I live the name Melanie who happens to be my novel's character. The favourit names change every second but this one is special.

What are you working on right now?
I am working on a Historical Fiction centered around Iraq-Us war. Thr story has fantasy too.

Your favourite thing about your latest project?
I love the climax I have given to it. If you ask me, it's the best story I have created so far.

Your favourite book, and why?

I loved or you could say adored Twilight series. I know many of you consider it a crap but there's something about Stephenie's writing style that draws everyone in.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?
I would love to be a giraffe and have the honor of being tallest animal. Or even a Zebra for it's beauty.

How about colour?

I love black, greys and whites. I love the gothich style.

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?I would announce this to the whole world and congratulate myself.

The genre you dislike the most?
I am not a big fan of Sci-fi but like to give it a try when is good. I can't hate any genre but yeah romantic one bores me. It's only good for movies.

Why do you write?
It's my refuge from everyday stress. I can create my own characters and people with emotions, duh? :D

What genre do you write, and why?

Sci fi and fantasy, primarily, because the fantastic always intrigues me. But it's always kind of twisted and weird.

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?

When I was six. I wrote a picture book called, "The Pilgrim Pig." It was mostly an excuse to draw pigs in pilgrim hats, but hey! Whatever works. :D

Your favourite era?

Dinosaurs!

What's your view on Tolkein?

I like the guy... hate the writing. I avoid his books like the plague.

Your favourite name ever?

I used to love Solea. I thought it was a unique name, until I listen to Miles Davis's Sketches of Spain. Oops. :P

What are you working on right now?

Editing FREAK, mostly. I'm also working on four crappy (new!) stories simultaneously while working on my bachelor's of science in chemical engineering. It's... fun?

Your favourite thing about your latest project?

My latest project? Well... I always liked the idea of God coming down, so that's intriguing! Combine that with recombinant proteins and magic, and yeah... it's pretty awesome!

Your favourite book, and why?

Oy, I flit around book to book like a whore. But if I had to pick one, it would probably be the bible now, since I'm reading it and it's really strange in an awesome way.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?

Swan!

How about colour?

Yellow!

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?

My first acceptance letter got a wild scream from me. It was fabulous.

The genre you dislike the most?

Erotica. SO BORING.

Why do you write?

Because I'm a masochist, apparently.

What genre do you write, and why?
A mix between science fiction and fantasy that's probably best described as dystopic with a little bit of urban. I write what I like, and I like the themes and commentary I can combine with these genres, as well as having absolutely limits as to what I can write.

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?
The first time I wrote creatively was fifth grade. I was an ESL student, so writing in English was harder for me than most (which is why I preferred reading over anything else back then. What a thought! Too bad the Internet diminished my attention span...) I wrote a historical fiction piece about Cleopatra's last days, her motivations, and her thought process using a female relative of Julius Caesar. I remember I put weeks and weeks of research into it, haha.

Your favourite era?
The mid- to late-1800's, I think. Because the earlier half of the century has all the great composers (the last of Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, and the beginning of Wagner), and the latter half has the aestheticism movement (which means, of course, Oscar Wilde.) I feel like I would really love all the hidden hedonism and vices (and I'd fit in extremely well, I daresay), and living this dichotomy between austerity and wildness. (Admittedly, if I was lower-class, I would definitely hate the entire century. Oh, that Industrial Revolution!)

Plus, gorgeous clothes that steampunkers would die for. :)

What's your view on Tolkien?

Excellent ideas and world development, poor execution. I honestly can't stand his writing style. I find it full of details that almost sound like they belong in a tour guide. :/ But he did bring on the advent of high fantasy, so I'll give him that.

Your favourite name ever?
Victoria or Ingrid for females.
James for males.

What are you working on right now?
A trilogy that's been in the works for nearly six years and is still growing, a few short pieces of no consequence, a post-apocalyptic reworking of the Great Gatsby, and some fanfiction that I've never finished.

Your favourite thing about your latest project?
Truthfully? Lots of gay. And angst, because I love schadenfreude. (Talking about the trilogy, here.)

Your favourite book, and why?
Oh, this is rather hard. I don't actually have a favorite book, per se. I have more than one, and they all have the same level of favoritism. I love certain writing styles, themes, and characters. Most of the time I read books to expand my knowledge, and usually I have fun, but there's not one book I would describe as my absolute favorite, no hands down.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?
An elephant. They are amazing animals. Seriously, they have a matriarchal society and are one of the most intelligent creatures walking this planet. And they are absolutely beautiful.

How about colour?
Green.

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?
Act the same way I do when I get my college acceptance letters: grin, maybe scream, maybe do a little dance in the street. But mostly feel affirmed (because I do have enough arrogance to assume that I will get a letter one day.)

The genre you dislike the most?
Romance. I like romance if it isn't the central point of the story.

Why do you write?
Because it's more satisfying (and faster!) to bang the image out on paper using words (says the Illustration major, lolz.) Writing has a special place in my heart; I love the nuances of language, and how you can convey certain things so subtly. With art, it's much more difficult to do that. Sometimes that difficulty is a good challenge, though, and I love painting and drawing almost as much as I love writing. :P

What genre do you write, and why?
I write a lot of poetry but I'm also writing a novel. I'm not sure what genre it is - it's about a fictional world but it's not really fantasy, so I guess it's young adult.

When did you start writing, and what did you first write?
I remember sitting at the dinner table once, telling my dad that I wanted to write something but I didn't know what, and he told me to write about a brown sauce bottle that was on the table. I wrote about the sauce bottle running away and into next door's garden. I was definitely under the age of ten at the time, but I can't remember exactly how old.

Your favourite era?
Can't say I have one, really. The future is always interesting to think about.

What's your view on Tolkein?
I tried reading Lord of the Rings once, a long time ago. I found it a bit too heavy; too much of a struggle. Too much purple prose, perhaps.

Your favourite name ever?
It used to be Jade but now I know someone called Jade, whenever I think of the name I think of her. So I don't have one anymore.

What are you working on right now?
I'm working on my novel, which is about 47,000 words so far.

Your favourite thing about your latest project?
My characters. I love them like real people. And I just find the whole writing process really exciting, especially because my longest novel attempt before I wrote this was only 17,000 words.

Your favourite book, and why?
I haven't read much for a while. I'd say The Writers and Artists Yearbook - it's incredibly helpful.

If you could be any animal, what would you be?
I would be a cat. They have such carefree lives. I'd be a very lazy cat.

How about colour?
Black.

(if you want to get published) What would your reaction be when you got your affirming letter?
I would probably run around screaming or something... and then put it on my Facebook page.

The genre you dislike the most?
Horror. I love Stephen King and books like The Shining and Carrie are great. But anything scarier than that... I don't read Stephen King after 9pm. I get scared way too easily. I tried writing a horror once but I just ended up scaring myself.

and lastly,

Why do you write?
Because it's fun. I write poetry because it helps and I write stories because I love my characters and I don't want to abandon them. I haven't finished my novel yet and I'm already thinking about the sequel.
Matt.
