((I think I'll just post it.))

The day has passed, and the night has arrived. Eleven teenagers leave their homes at midnight: nine to meet in an abandoned warehouse, and two to prowl the streets in search of a good prank. Soon, the nine heroes join them, on patrol. It's a cold night, and their breaths come in puffs of white, but they're used to it. It's the life they chose many months ago.

((Okay, so we're looking for the villains, and the villains might actually be looking for us. They might be together, it's up to them. The heroes are on edge, though Death hasn't told them about spotting Mynah. This all okay?))

EDIT: Anyone willing to work Chris in? Tex can't post this weekend.

((Sounds good to me. You can make the search last for a bit if you want, unless you find the Metal Canary before you find Mynah. It depends on how quickly you're posting.))

Kara/Electrum

Electrum walked down the street, next to Flux and Death. She wasn't as tired as she had been. When she had gotten home she had collapsed on her bed, and gotten a solid four hours of sleep. Then she had eaten dinner, and fell asleep again for another three hours. Then she had done her homework and hurried to the meeting. She had recharged while she had been doing her homework. Her hair was crackling, and occasionally would let out a glow for about a quarter of a second. She had really filled up.

She didn't feel comfortable around Death. She wasn't sure why, but she just felt shy around her. Death seemed powerful and dangerous, and also sad in a way. Electrum felt oddly insignificant around her. She made herself as unnoticable as she possibly could be. Stupid mood swings. She thought.
Just another quack spouting psychobabble.

Cara/Death

Death usually loved patrol. It was the one time when she felt totally comfortable and life had a defined goal. Bad was bad and good was good in the superhero world, and there was no in-between. But tonight, she was uneasy. It was partly to do with her sighting of the nameless villain that morning, but mostly because Flux - Java - walked next to her now. They'd spoken little since the storeroom earlier at school, and Death could hardly remember what she'd felt then. It seemed like someone else had been living that moment, and she'd just been watching.

Electrum was on her other side. She, too, seemed to be on edge, though Death wasn't sure why. Maybe it was because she was a new team member; this was one of her first patrols.

"I never welcomed you to the team, Electrum," Death began, clearing her throat a little. "So, yeah. Welcome to Justice. Anything happens tonight, which it isn't likely to, just get behind me. I'll take all the hits. You just focus on hitting them, okay?"

Flux

I felt focused. We were on the job now, there wasn't time for thinking about what happened today, I'd do that later.
I was thinking about the bird I'd almost fought this morning, a villain for sure. I hadn't told the team about it yet, there wasn't time. And, though I hated to admit it, I was ashamed for letting it pass unscathed. It was so unlike me.
But, the group needed to know and that came before my personal feelings.
I just opened my mouth to speak, when Death - Cara - got in there before me.
She welcomed Electrum to the team. But her last words made me see red.
Before Electrum could respond, I burst out.
"You'll take the hits?! Jesus, Ca-Death, I think that's going a little far, don't you?"
So much for keeping my thoughts on the job ...
"It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want."

Dalia/ Mistique

I had heard Flux's shout from where he was standing beside me and the awkward silence that follwed jolted me awake from my zombie-like walking. Death stopped, making everyone else stop mechanically.

"Yes, I plan to take hits for a new super hero, Flux," she hissed through her teeth, shooting Flux a frustrated look. "If there is any attack, I'm not going to allow a newbie to get hurt under my leadership. Do you have a problem with that?"

I glanced nervously at Electrum, who was on the other side of Flux. Before I knew it, my big mouth was going on auto- pilot.

"What if I made sure she didn't get hurt for you?" I blurted. Dammit! I immediately thought when Death's gaze settled on me. Stupid over tired brain.

"What are you talking about Mystique?"

"Well, I can read minds can't I? I could read the villains thoughts and protect her that way..." I said, my strong voice fading into a mumble at the end under Death's glare.

Cara/Death

"I've got it covered," Death said through gritted teeth, and Mistique looked down. "None of you need to get involved. Especially not you, Flux. We run into anyone difficult, I'll take them on alone. Unless that happens, Electrum can look after herself, right?"

Electrum swallowed next to her and nodded, before walking off to join Mistique. Death didn't try to stop her, turning to Flux instead.

"Don't blow our cover," she hissed. "You nearly said my name. And why do you care so much? I told you earlier, I can't get hurt, whereas the rest of you can. I may as well go in."

"You don't have to go alone, though," Flux whispered, a hint of steel to his voice.

"Well, you'll be just behind me, won't you? You can help from there."

Flux

I gritted my teeth.
"I won't be behind you, Death. I'll be where any superhero deserves to be if they choose, beside you. Fighting the enemy as equals. I'm not going to cower behind you like a frightened dog."
She snorted, a glint in her eye. "Right, because you're the big bad wolf, aren't you?"
"Um, guys?" Came a timid voice. Mistique. "Shouldn't we focus on the job?"
Inwardly, I cursed, people shouldn't have to tell me to focus. I turned on my heel and began striding up the road.
"Yeah," I said shortly. "We should, let's go this way."
"It is curious how often you humans manage to obtain that which you do not want."

Nick/Mynah

"It's a little early for you to be fighting amongst yourselves, isn't it? Goodness, I could hear you squalling from three blocks away!"

The heroes froze, eyes darting around. It was very difficult to tell where the voice was coming from or how far away the speaker was.

Death took a step forward, eyes narrowed. "Who are you?" she said in a voice that was almost a whisper.

"Who am I? I'm your foil of course." The boy in the black suit with the yellow tie stepped into the light of a street lamp ahead of them. His eyes were dancing with mirth behind his mask. "But you can call me Mynah."

Cara/Death

"Who are you?" Death whispered, as the voice flitted through her memories.

"Who am I? I'm your foil of course. But you can call me Mynah."

It was him. The boy in the black suit with the yellow tie, the one who got away, the one Death had seen hanging around near the warehouse earlier. Inside, she was shivering, but she brought her eyes to meet his and held an icy gaze.

"Do you want me to finish what I started last time?" she threatened, almost cursing aloud when her voice heightened in pitch.

"Wait, Death? You know this guy?" It was Smokefall who'd spoken up, and Death thanked the stars it wasn't Java.

"We didn't have the time to chat, but sure. We're old friends."

Behind her, the heroes had formed a sort of semicircle, an arched offensive, leaving a gap for Death to take her place. Electrum's hands were crackling with electricity, Falconstrike had her arms outstretched, and Lume was playing thunder's drums. Death withdrew a knife and sketched a sign in the air.

It was a lopsided 8: infinity. Her own personal calling card, and a promise that this time, she'd finish Mynah once and for all. As she backed into the circle, she knew that she'd given the signal to attack.

((You guys want to fight, or what? Mynah can keep them talking if he wants.))

Dalia/ Mystique

Already alert, she snatched her sword. If he could get a little closer, she could read his mind and perhaps find out his weakness. She gritted her teeth as she waited to attack, no one making any sudden moves.

Mynah smirked and stepped forward a little in a crouch.

I hummed low and struggled to stretch my powers over to where he was standing about thirty feet away. I felt my eyes roll back into my head as I finally entered his mind.

"Death, watch out, he's going to attack you to the left," I murmured before I blindly heard them clash. I heard him think it was odd that I knew where he was going to attack when I couldn't see. Then, he figured it out and shut off his mind. I started to panic, because I couldn't see and I knew he was planning something.

I quickly snapped out, but just before my eyes rolled back into place, I felt myself be shoved, hard and fast. I tried to scream as I watched myself tumble head over heels, but no sound came out. I tried to pull myself together and forced myself to flip out of the insane tucking and rolling. I landed carefully on the grass twenty feet away, before collapsing.
