After the lights came on, the attendants quickly filed through the crowd, separating them out in small groups. Coden watched them warily, almost sure of the people he was ready to protect.
"Excuse me but aren't you a personal bodyguard to the queen and her advisor?"
Coden didn't turn to the voice. "Its my choice who i protect. They have twenty guards already. They don't need me."
He quickly walked away from whoever was asking, because a certain family had been ushered away towards the forest.
Grabbing the nearest guard, Coden pulled him aside. "I will take care of this group."
The guard, startled, looked back between Coden and the group. "B-but the queen..."
"Is fine." Coden interrupted, getting slightly more annoyed than he usually would. "Move away. I will lead this time."

The family all stared at him as he walked up, especially the blue eyes. He grinned, tightening his leather coat again.
"My name is Coden as you know. I am here to lead you through the forest."

I watched the humans file out of the cathedral, where they stopped and turned around in circles, unsure of what to do. Coden hadn't exited yet, and I didn't want the new arrivals to have to wait in the dark, so I took it upon myself to introduce them to the island.

I pulled my long auburn hair over my tapered ears, else the humans catch a glimpse of them, and began.

"Excuse me. Let me introduce myself: I am Cordelia Hiif, daughter of the Queen's half-brother, Marcus Hiif. You may call me Delia. I have lived on Helio for all of my life, and still have not discovered all of it's boundless secrets. We are so glad to have you here, and I hope that Coden's lecture did not frighten you. He has that effect on some people."

I watched their faces as they brightened gradually. They were clearly under the impression that I was human, too.

"Please follow me. The way to the town square is just along the beach."

They followed. As I led, I explained, slowly and calmly, the history of Helio. As I spoke, they clearly thought I was telling them untruths, for their faces held absolute doubt. On our way, I pointed out major landmarks, shops, popular reclining spots, and they slowly began to absorb the truth. The truth that Helio was no ordinary island. But they still had yet to grasp how extraordinary in was.

Dahlia

I just followed behind the humans. Every so often they'd turn to stare at me. I just grinned and waved. They whispered to each other, pointing to my wings and long, sparkly outfit. I always enjoyed going on the tour with them. After only a few landmarks, I grew bored and lifted my wings to flutter off above the island. I pushed off the sandy ground and lifted into the air, the cool breeze in my face. I flew above them, following them for a while on purpose, doing spins and cartwheels in the air. Delia shot me a look and I flew off above the island to find something to do that wouldn't get me in trouble.

Coraline:

All of the people in the auditorium were separated by family as far as I could tell. Our family was put in a group and assigned a sort of tour guide. I sighed and stood on the other side of Caleb to avoid any contact with my parents, not that they cared or anything. I knew it made them slightly mad that I wouldn't talk to them this whole trip.

I sighed as we began to walk but then were stopped as Coden walked towards us, shooing out tour guide and telling us he would be leading us through the forrest.
I stared at him until our eyes met then became shy and looked away. My cheeks flushed and I tried to hide it. We walked in silence with Caleb randomly pointing at a flower or something.

I played with my dress and walked with my eyes down until I ran into something. I looked up into a pair of red eyes and quickly looked away. Before I had wanted him to look at me, notice me even; but now that he was so close I felt insecure.

"Sorry." I mumbled straightening up and smoothing out my dress. My mother sighed in an annoyed manner and my father scoffed. Caleb threw me a look of pity then followed them into the house we would be staying in. I was left alone with Coden and wanted to run but couldn't move.

Coden's eyes stayed locked with the young woman's. He had barely any control of his lost mind, but he wasn't about to show that. He gingerly scooped her up in her arms, never losing eye contact with the girl.
"I never did get the name."
She barely could get her answer out. "C-coraline..."
He grinned, his lips just barely pulling up across his cheeks. "Be careful next time..." he breathed.
Setting Coraline on her legs, he grinned again. "Now go on."

"Coden!"

His eyes thinned. Coden turned quickly, letting out a low growl. One of the guards from the groups was hidden in the edges of the forest. In an instant Coden was standing inches from him.

"What are you doing here?"

"There was another attack..."

Coden gritted his teeth. "This is what happens when the counseler thinks its okay to use it as a tourist attraction..."

He had forgotton about Coraline, who had silently listened to the whole interaction.

Simon

Like many of the other passengers being taken around the island, I pretended to be disbelieving of all the fantastical things our guide was speaking of. A part of me was saying that it was impossible for any of it to be true, that this place didn't even exist. But another part had taken hold of my mind. This place, Helio, was the last empty space on the map, as far as I was concerned. Everything I'd dreamed of as a child, as the son of an explorer, could be fulfilled here.

And moreover, she was speaking of things that didn't exist anywhere else in the world. If I could map this place and show it to the world, I would go down in history as the man who had discovered a fantasy world. I would be even greater than my father. No doubt the natives would initially disagree with global attention, but once the benefits had been outlined to them, they'd come around.

I made my way to the front of the group, finding myself alongside the girl who'd introduced herself as Delia. "Hi," I said, smiling, "I'm Simon Chambers. I was just wondering about a couple of things, and you seemed to be the right person to ask, so..." I paused for a second, trying just to look like a curious tourist, "How come this place isn't on any of the maps?"

[Jasper Rosario]

The sound of mumbles started to come into range. Jasper's eyes searched the forest around him, but still couldn't find anyone. Then, another sound came. Low, deep, a growl. He stiffened and jumped to his feet, putting all his senses on total alert.

A massive creature stumbled out of the brush and bared its fangs. It had dark, pitch black eyes and long talons a grimy yellowish color. Jasper took a step back, baring his teeth and then grinning.

"You are one ugly monster..." he snickered.

The creature roared and then charged. Jasper ducked around and ran the other direction, trying to shake the thing. It roared another defening roar and then changed direction, running head on to Jasper; and this time, he didn't run away.

It was obvious the creature only used brute strenghth and probably smell to guide him. It used no tactics or special abilities. Jasper ducked down lower until he was almost touching the grass below him with his chin. Once the moster was only a foot away, he lunged. Jasper grabbed hold of one of it's arms and bit down. It roared in agony and fell to its knees.

Jasper sprinted farther away and ran back, faster. Jumping up and landing on the creature's back. Cr-rack! Its arms and legs flailed around and another roar was let out.

"And the all mighty champion is... Jasper Rosario! And the crowd goes wild! Aaahhh!" Jasper jumped off and began walking again. But only getting a few steps before something grabbed the back of his leg.

He groaned and turned around, the monster's grip tightening. The sound of mumbles got closer, some of the words finally getting clearer.

Humans... Jasper looked down at the beast, shocked that its let go.

The thing was trying to drag itself towards the voices! Jasper grabbed a hold of its arm and started running, dragging it behind him. Another crack, and then a booming roar. Its arm had gotten out of socket. A huge cliff wall was just ahead of them.

"Perfect," Jasper's grin widened.

He stopped abruptly and let the monster fly forwards. He pulled on its arm and the limb popped off in a spurt of blood. Jasper dropped it and started running again, kicked the creature in the side so it would stay mid-air until it collided with the wall in a thunder sounding chrash.

"Ha! Take tha-" his sentance trailed off as he failed to notice another tree root sticking out of the ground.

So, as the monster crashed into the wall, Jasper was coming up right behind it. Another thundering clack echoed throughout the island. A few moments later when he was able to get his head back together, Jasper stumbled away from the creature. Half way covered in its dark blood.

"Ugh! I'm soaked! It'll take forever to get this out of-" he stopped mid-sentance and looked up.

A crowd of people were standing right infront of him. Their eyes wide, horror struck. Jasper let his arms drop it his sides and a sheepish smile cross his face. He stratched the back of his neck and let out a shaky laugh.

"Uh... I can explain."

The crowd started to scream.

Coraline:

Coden picked me up and set me back on my feet. I felt like an idiot when I could barely get my name out. Then someone called his name and he moved with alarming speed towards the person who said something about an attack.

I only half payed attention; I was trying to figure out why I felt this way around him. It scared me, like I might lose control. I'm not the type of person who easily opens up to people. I prefer to stay sheltered and away, only Coden didn't make me feel like I needed to shelter myself from him. He made me feel almost safe. Protected.

I got scared, I didn't need anybody, I didn't need to be protected. I could take care of myself. I didn't need my parent's approval or love, and I didn't need Caleb watching over me all the time; so I certainly did not need Coden's protection. Needing someone can only lead to bad things, I learned that a long time ago.

Coden continued talking to the other guide and I slipped around our vacation house and into the forrest. I walked for ten minutes then sat down on a big bouler jutting out of a clearing in the forrest floor.

[Jasper Rosario]

"No no! Please don't scream! I-" Jasper groaned and then plopped down on the ground next to the corpse of a monster while the humans ran around screaming. "This is gonna look sooo bad." he mumbled into his hands.

Finally after a few minutes, the screaming stopped, and the sound of running feet, pounding against the grass, stopped completely, too. Jasper heaved out a big sigh and looked up to find that the crowd of people had finally ran off. He scooted farther back and leaned on the boulder with his knees pulled up to chest.

"I'm such a monster," he whispered with a half-hearted smile.

"I don't need anyone." a voice mummured above him.

Oh no, my conscience is finally talking to me. Jasper picked up one of his hands and watched the monster's blood drip from his fingers tips, his head tilted to a side in fake interest. And it smells nice, too.

"Conscience, are you wearing a new perfume? Scent of human maybe?" he laughed out loud at his own joke, sounding hysterical.

Coraline:

I had been sitting on the boulder for a while with my head in my knees, thinking of what to tell my parents when I returned home. They wouldn't care of course, but they would demand an explanaition.

I heard some screaming and running but didn't bother to look up. When the screaming finally stopped someone sat down beside the boulder and said, ""I'm such a monster,"

"I don't need anyone." I replied without thinking, not looking up.

"Conscience, are you wearing a new perfume? Scent of human maybe?" the voice laughed and I became a little confused. I looked up and then looked down at a boy leaning against the boulder dripping in blood.

"I'm not your conscience, and I am human." I said indifferently. The boy was watching blood drip from his fingers. He looked up at me.

"Oh you are aren't you." He said turning his eyes back to his hand.

"Yes, I am." I stood up and walked around the boulder until I was standing in front of the boy, "I'm Coraline."

"Jasper." He said sticking out his blood dripping hand. I grimaced and then he shrugged and dropped his hand. I looked back in what was I thought the direction towards my house.

"What happened?" I asked as he stood up.

"Uh, I'm not so sure you would believe me." He replied a half smile on his face.

"Try me." I said, stalling to go home.

[Jasper Rosario]

The girl, Coraline, looked fairly curious to know what really happened. Either that or she was stalling something. Jasper didn't think twice about telling her about the creature, She'll need to know things aren't all fairy tales soon enough. he thought.

"Okay, there I was, flying though the air." Jasper pointed to the sky and then looked back over to Coraline. "Still going to believe me?"

She looked skeptical, but went ahead and nodded, so he went on. "I crashed into that boat on the edge of the beach and all the sand flew up!" he made a spun around in a circle. "Then, before any of those humans could see me, I dashed into the forest!"

Jasper put on a serious face, but still obviously holding back a smile, and ran behind one of the trees. Just like before, as he said, he ran so quickly the wind was trailing behind him. The only thing Coraline would be able to see was a blur of red passing in front of her. Most of the blood had flew off of him and splatted on the grass. Jasper grinned at the shocked expression on her face.

"How'd you-"

"Not done yet." Jasper interrupted before going on. "Then, I started walking through the forest to look around." he started humming the Pink Panther theme song while he walked stealthily behind another tree. "Suddenly, before I could think... I took a few more steps and than tripped on a tree root, like this."

Still humming the Pink Panther song, he jogged out from behind the tree and then fell forward. Landing with a Thud! face down in the grass. Jasper peeked up at Coraline and saw her giggling, which made him smile.

He jumped up to his feet and ran behind Coraline so that he would be speaking from right behind her. "Then," he whispered, "I heard growling, like this..." Jasper took a step back and mimicked the monster's growl.

Coraline's body stiffened as she turned to face him. Her face had lost some of its color, Jasper couldn't help but laugh. Coraline's pale face quickly turned red.

"I hope I didn't scare you," he said, batting his eyelashes in a look of innocence.

"You did not scare me." she snapped back.

Jasper's grin widened as he went on. "And then, this huge monster came out of the trees. Stumbling along, like this!" he threw out his arms and took huge steps around in a wide circle. "We got into this fight you see and of course, I won... Or so I thought.

"But before I go on to what happened next. I was congratulating myself on a victory well done, and as I walked to get away from the thing-- I tripped on another root." Jasper fell back down face first in the grass again. Coraline laughed a little louder this time.

Jasper looked up to find her covering her mouth in an effort to hide her laughter. He raised an eyebrow and stifled another chuckle before going on. "So it grabbed my foot and we got into another fight. I won-- again. So this time, to make sure he was dead for good, I grabbed his arm and ran towards that boulder!" he pointed to the huge rock beside Coraline.

"I was running really fast when I threw him against the boulder. He made a huge cracking sound when he collided. I was about to stop when I er..." Jasper sighed. "I tripped-- yet again. You know these trees really do have issues. I mean, why can't they just keep their roots inside the ground like normal trees, right? So like-"

"Go on!" Coraline pressed.

Jasper smiled. "Okay, and so instead of falling flat on my face, I was sent flying after it. I crashed into it and another thundering sound echoed. I knew it was surely dead then, because I stumbled out of it, soaked in its dark blood." he shook his head and some of it sprayed in different directions. "Then I picked up the lifeless corpse and threw it behind the boulder after those humans ran away screaming their heads off."

Jasper was laughing as he jogged over next to Coraline. "And if you still don't believe me, because I doubt you do, the body is right over there." he pointed towards the side of the boulder where a dismembered arm was twitching.

Coraline:

I looked at the twitching body and I believe that he had killed whatever it was, but I wasn't so sure about the flying and crashing through the boat. I decided I would have to check out his story for real and see if the boat was damaged, that could mean we would be stranded here for more than just a couple weeks. That would just make my day.

"You are an excellent story teller." I said indifferently. I still didn't want to go home. Not that I really considered it "home." Also I was still trying to keep my mind off of Coden. Wherever he was he had probably forgotten me by now. Which completely proves one of my points on my I don't need anyone.

"Thank you." Jasper said with a smile, "You don't believe me though, do you?"

"I'm not so sure yet, I kind of hope the part about blowing a hole through the ship isn't true."

"Why?" He asked curiously, sitting down against the boulder again.

"It just would not be good for me." I looked over at the hideous body on the ground, "I don't suppose that anybody will be coming to clean this up, you did say people saw you kill it right?" He nodded, "Maybe we should go then." I said a little nervous. This island was so strange. I wasn't too sure if I should even be around this guy, I mean he was a killer. What if he wanted to kill me? He also seemed a little crazy, calling everyone humans, as if he wasn't one himself.

[Jasper Rosario]

"That probably is a good idea," Jasper's wide grin faltered and became a pout. "But I don't think I can hang around you anymore. You'll have to see the ship by yourself."

"What's wrong with me? Shouldn't it be the other way around since your the one covered in blood?"

"I suppose your right about that, too. Still, despite the fact that I'd love to hang out some more, it wouldn't be the best for you." his lips curled up in a crooked grin as Coraline's expression became even more confused.

"But-"

"I should go." Jasper picked up one of his feet and disappeared out of existence, running at his impossibly fast speed.

"Wait!"

He reappeared back on the boulder. "Yes? Make this quick, okay?"

"I just have a couple questions." Jasper waited impatiently, tapping the tips of his fingers as he listened.

"Okay, one: why isn't it a good idea to show me the boat; and two: why do you keep calling everyone else human. You are, too... aren't you?"

"Nope," Jasper picked up the dismembered arm that finally stopped twitching. "Look, see this?"

She nodded.

"I killed it, got that?" Coraline nodded again, still not understanding. "This was maybe a 2 ton thing that you think a human killed. Do you seriously believe I'm human?"

"Well what else could you be?"

He rolled his eyes and put the the arm gently to his lips. Jasper bit down and sucked until the limb changed from a dark grey-brown to bone white. "Now what monster in your so called 'fairy-tales'" sarcasm was oozing out of the words. "could do that?"

Just then Jasper abruptly gagged and started coughing. "Ugh! That tasted bitter..."

He watched as Coraline's face got pale. "Your a- a-"

"Go on," Jasper's face was soft and his smile turned slightly sheepish. "you and I both know the name of it. Please don't scream..." he begged, looking off to the distance as Coraline's mouth tried to form the word.
