Third (I think?) update for us! Now that planning is out of the way, I'm going to work on getting an official SB page up by this upcoming Monday, if not sooner. In the meantime, you all can start imagining your characters - but be thinking about how to connect your character with everyone else's in their present and their past, along with balancing group dynamics. Those can make or break a friend group!

I think it'll make most sense for us to collab/talk while committing to character creation, but in order to do so -- we'll need a pad! For this occasion, I have made an official riseup pad. >:^)

In the pad, you'll find the CP format. Because we're writing our characters at different phases of their life, things like a character's appearance, core values, inclinations and so on will evolve. Therefore, these templates will be for Phase 1: New Moon, when characters are ages 8-10. As we write and learn our characters and prepare for the following phases, we can add to our CP's to update for each age. I think it doesn't make sense to plan that far ahead because sometimes you have a plan, but the execution feels different as you figure it out - especially since these characters will be new to us.

Our first riseup meetup will be for this Monday evening to launch the SB and begin character work.

@silvernight I've pasted your character planning into the pad!
@winterwolf0100 you know what I realized would be perfect -- is if Ramona and your character are half-siblings. Ramona's dad is infamous for his infidelity in the town. They can have the same slimeball dad! (Yay!) If you'd like, that is :^)

Spoiler
Dropping the CP Code here as well.
Code
[b]Name:[/b]
[b]Role:[/b]
[b]Age:[/b] (8-10)
[b]Appearance:[/b]
[b]Personality:[/b] (include temperament, strengths, flaws/weaknesses)
[b]Background:[/b] (briefly cover circumstances of birth and family upbringing, economically all of these kids are very poor, include relevant important relational connections outside of the friend group)
[b]Quirk:[/b] (something uniquely and genuinely weird about them)

@soundofmind could you share more about the Blue Suns, like their hierarchy, how they operate, who’s in charge, how to join, group values, etc.?

@Lael I promise I plan on replying more in full -- I literally was going to this morning, but a personal emergency came up suddenly and it's sucking away my time. (I'm okay! But greatly inconvenienced!)

I'll give you what I have written up currently to start, but will throw a more thorough Lore Dump in the first OOC post (for easier finding) later. Sorry that this isn't very thorough at present. I'll get it to you at least by Monday!

Blue Suns
Spoiler

Gang Hierarchy:
    • The ranking is determined by your number, which corresponds to the number of rays on a member's sun tattoo. An additional ray is added upon promotion. Lower-ranking members are handed a lot of grunt work, and higher-ranking members have more responsibility but more freedom/"independence". The higher you rank the more you know and the more resources you have at your disposal.
      - The 8 is called the Full Sun. They have an 8 ray tattoo, and is the sole leader/kingpin of the Blue Suns
      - 7's are the most trusted of the Full Sun. In charge of governing gang operations in major city bases which include the following: Ruddlan, King's Peak, Everfalls, Dagger's Heart, Mother's Hearth, Port Ness, Wakefield, Gateway, Ilcott

Criminal Operations:
    • Black Market
      â—¦ Illegal Goods:
        â–Ş poisons/deadly drugs
        â–Ş rare magical ingredients
        â–Ş Lumshade
â–Ş they are the primary source for the get-high version of the drug
        â–Ş Rare Weaponry
          â–Ş Arms dealing (guns/powder/bullets)
    â—¦ Human Trafficking
â–Ş Captured Mages (kidnapped/bought off mage hunters)
â–Ş Children who are mages/potential mages
      â–Ş Healing mages
    â—¦ Government Influence
â–Ş Blackmail, extortion, corruption of world/local leaders
    â—¦ Organized Crime
â–Ş Armed robbery > Highwaymen usually target big city deliveries on treacherous roads away from cities when they're most vulnerable
â–Ş Assassinations > of people who get in the way
      â–Ş Assassins/Hitmen

Also @Wolfi I give you this exclusive option because I think it would make so much sense for your role: if you’d like, you could make the Survivor secretly a werewolf or a healing mage. Pick one!

Ooohohoooooo >:] Would absolutely make sense!

I know it's only a piece of it but that Suns lore is already so fascinating! I can see why mages are hunted/trafficked and I remember how they were treated from Adina's story, but as for werewolfies... anything extra you can offer regarding how they're seen in this world?

Take all the time you need to reply and prepare the rest of the lore things! <3

A follow-up question - how do folks become werewolves in this universe? Are they born with it, or do they get it at some point by curse/ceremony/bite?

Answering immediate questions that I can for now -- again, will try to be more thorough by Monday. :,) So thanks for your patience, guys.

@Wolfi - Here's a breakdown I already have written up on mages and magic. Feel free to ask more questions if you have any!

Spoiler
A World with Magic
Magic is in the fiber of every living thing, but some people are born with the gift to harness it, and some plant life is imbued with it, allowing for unique magical effects.

Magic in Nye is very physical. It is either used to physically alter things, or physical things are altered to harness it; i.e. magical plants/objects found in nature. Magical items cannot be manmade, but natural magical properties can be harnessed/imbued into certain items, though usually something consumable.

Example: If the material a weapon or tool is made out of isn't already magical, then there's no way to make it magical, without adding a new material that is magical.
    Mages

Because magic is in a person’s genetic makeup, if someone is born with the ability to use magic that ability is more likely to be passed down to the next generation if they procreate with someone who also can use magic. Someone who can use magic is called a mage.

There are seven types of magic in Nye, all of which are expressed in the six dragons:
    • Earth
    • Fire
    • Air
    • Water
    • Healing/Energy
    • Lightning/Electricity
    • Shifting

All but the latter two are expressed through a mage learning to harness it by physically altering the element they are genetically attuned to. This is accomplished through physical movements and/or touch.

Using magic is like any other physical activity, the more magic that’s used, the more energy it takes. Like staying fit, it requires practice and exercise to build up stamina for using large amounts of magic at a time. It also requires practice to hone the magic so it can be controlled and harnessed in a skillful, safe way.

Magical abilities are discovered in humans around the same time as puberty, but the known window for them to express their magical capabilities and discover them is between 11-20. The typical window, however, is 13-16.

Healing Magic
Healing magic is the only magic used on living things. Healing magic is also known as “energy” magic by early mages because it is a transference of life/energy that is given from the mage to the living being receiving it. That life/energy transference allows bodies to heal up and recover supernaturally fast from physical wounds, diseases, and other maladies. Healing magic cannot heal the mind, wounds that have already healed, or kill things like parasites (invasive living creatures within the body). It can, however, be used to push out non-living foreign objects from wounds like debris, bullets, etc during the healing process. It can also heal viral and bacterial sicknesses, like a cold or flu. When a wound is healed with healing magic it is sterilized if healed fully.

Healing magic can only be used to bring back the dead if done immediately after someone dies - but to accomplish this, it requires almost or all of a mage’s life/energy. A mage has a limit to how much energy they can give and expend. It would kill a mage to bring someone back from the dead. A life for a life. In the same vein, if a healing mage expends too much of their energy in a short amount of time, they are equally at risk for dying due to over-exertion, which leads to heart failure.

Healing magic is the only magic that requires touch. When a mage heals, their hand (or other body part) glows deep with warm light where their skin touches what is being healed.

Healing magic is also referred to as life transference because the transference can go both ways. A healing mage can both give and take, and if they draw from another living source (human, animal, or plant), they can heal themselves in the same way they can heal others. The cost is that every time a healing mage takes, they gradually lose a little bit of their mind in the process. Taking life/energy is addictive over time, especially in large doses, and it will eventually drive a mage mad.

Werewolves
Werewolves are the only other branch of shifting mages. Like dragons, they can instantaneously shift into their wolven form, and both their human and wolf forms are the same person. Unlike dragons, the shift is not accompanied by a flash of light and instead seeing someone shift would be like seeing one image change with the blink of an eye.

When they shift from form to form, their human form retains all clothing/articles, as does their wolven form. Wounds, however, transfer to both forms and mirror placement/severity. This applies to both temporary and permanent wounds, handicaps, injuries, pains, diseases, etc.

Example: A werewolf wearing pants in their human form will only be able to access the things in their pockets when in human form. When they shift to wolven form, it is as if the pants and what’s in the pockets don’t exist. But when they shift back, it’s there.

Werewolves have enhanced smell and hearing - stronger than that of a regular wolf. They are also physically faster/stronger while in wolf form.

Werewolves are also the only mages that express their magical capabilities from birth. As infants, they can shift from form to form without training. Werewolves are also the only mages who can have secondary magic: one of the five elemental magics or healing. Usually, their secondary magic is weaker compared to a human mage without a shifting ability.

A werewolf's magic is inherent and genetically passed down. "Werewolfism" or "shifting," as is the lore language is a dominant genetic trait and far more likely to be passed down to a child even w/one werewolf parent.

    Current Cultural Standing
During the calamity, as mages were killed for their magic, werewolves were lumped into the category of monsters due to ignorance. At the time, werewolves were killed for sport, and the practice continued after the war, carrying over into the DAMG and as a practice in Monster Hunting.

Now, werewolves are close to extinction and stay hidden. Some werewolves hide amongst humans, swearing off their wolven form. Others live deep in the forests where no one will find them.

@winterwolf0100 - R.E. your question in the pad! I think it would be a cool thing to explore our characters discovering their half-sibling connection in-story. I have no strong preferences either way. At age 8, Ramona's a bit naive and her older brother has kept her in the dark about a lot of those family dynamics, so at least on her end, discovering she has a half-sibling could be part of her growing up. As far as how it'd impact her emotionally, I think it'd be nuanced. At first, mostly, she'll just be like: yay another sibling! But it will also get her thinking.
