Hello poets and friends!

Question for all of you: Do you have certain words that you LOVE to use in your poetry? Perhaps words that sound beautiful to you or help you write better poems. What are they and why do you like them so much?

Or perhaps, are there words that you detest in poetry? Either in your work or seeing it in others writing too.

I am excited to hear all of your favourite words!
Who's to say that my light is better than your darkness? Who's to say death is better than your darkness? Who am I to say?

I write a lot of religious poetry, so of course, I use a lot of religious imagery --> floods, the wilderness, mothers and femininity. I frequently humanize divine figures and reflect on growth through suffering, as well. That comes in through anatomical imagery (hands, especially bloody ones / surgery / ribs / sacrifice). I write a lot about cleanliness too, so sometimes I just add "clean" in front of something bodily.

Outside of that, I mean, who doesn't write about love? Remembering your past? I write a lot about nostalgia and missing people / places --> coming home, migrating, getting lost. I think the idea of "home" is a great vessel for memories, and it's very ouroboric, where the cycle never truly ends. That's fun to explore when I'm inspired!!

For me I think it's a lot of words to do with light or the absence of: beams, backlight, rays, shards (metaphorically), glowing, illuminating, fireflies, shining, silhouette. I tend to use colour words, especially the simpler monosyllabic ones like red or grey. I like how you can set the mood of a piece by talking about lighting or colours - it's a great shorthand for emotion (though I also wish I could expand into other non-visual senses sometimes).

Perhaps, yet, but, I know, layers, buried, landscape, background, hoped, fragments, regret, we, filled, grasped. Basically words that sound fancy to me but aren't really, but I guess kinda. A lot of my poems dive very very very deep, maybe a little too deep, into metaphors, which is probably why I use these kinds of words.

I use some words that I find pretty, mainly. Some include reminiscent, light, shine, many different colors, etc. I tend to focus on specific terms/words/feelings based on what I'm trying to write about, but that can vary greatly.

I'll probably edit this later with more words I remember, haha.
name: key/string/perks
pronouns: she/her/hers and they/them/theirs

novel: dream-ish (camp novmo '25)

My most favorite words are color describers (vermillion, crimson, canary, burgundy, cerulean, lush, etc.) However, i tend to write alot about sunsets for some reason and so I use words like iridescent alot haha (it’s such an ethereal word tho)
