In one sense, they are a little pointless (just something fun to do) in another they are very valuable.

Take one of the most active groups on here, the Double Trouble Writing Huddle. In it you write stories with a partner. Seems a bit pointless on the surface, but after writing in there for awhile I realized it gets you to improve your writing because you have o adapt when your partner throws you a twist!

Some other groups are just ways for people who like something to meet. Like the book groups and other culture groups. Those are really for fun.

Others are directed at a specific element of writing, such as Character development. These can be very useful for getting direct and to the point advice on an element you are struggling with. This style of group also gives you a chance to help others if you're strong in that aria.

Hope that answers your question!

Hi, I probably sound like an ideot, but how do you accept a friend request, because there were only three options: "Accept Later, Decline" and "Decide"
Not just that, but when I am on my profile and I go to the friends department it says code 404-internet full? I don't understand. . .

You're allowed only one image, but you can always use Photobucket or Imageshack os something to host your images, if you want. :) If that's the case, you just do:

Though they might already have some code you can use. :)

Hey Lucy!
Well, coloured usernames are people with certain 'jobs' on YWS.
Red = Admins
Orange = Distinguished Members
Green = Moderators
Light Green = Junior Moderators
Purple = Instructors
Cyan = Greeters (Like me :D)

You can apply to be an Instructor or Greeter, but not anything else.
Distinguished members are retired Moderators/Admins.
The Moderators & Junior Moderators help the Administrators maintain the site.
Do consider carefully if you want to apply though.
:D

Well, you have to have been registered on YWS for at least one month before applying for either Instructor or Greeter. You can go to this link (http://www.youngwriterssociety.com/apply_user.php) to apply, but I must warn you:

Do think this through very, very carefully. Mods do not like it when members apply on a whim when they don't actually fit the requirements. It takes time and a whole bunch of effort to become either Instructor or Greeter, and you will have to work to get the position. Are you considering applying for either of them? Which one?

As of right now, you'll need a lot more reviews on your record to even be considered for Instructor, okay? I'm not sure about how often you greet, but to be a Greeter your greets should be informative and quite numerous. If you need advice on critiquing, you can PM me or any other Purp.

That help any?

What is Big Brother? Why is he stretching? Why is he on my friend's list? Is it just a random 1984 joke or something?

Big Brother is the name for the Moderators and Administrators that look after the site. Yes, it's pretty much a 1984 joke. The stretching thing is also a joke. We like to change the name of Big Brother to include our own idea of humour, like "Big Brother is a Cylon." He's on your friend's list automatically, because Big Brother is everybody's friend! We help you if you need help, advice, or are being harassed on the site in any way.

Okay, this will sound idiotic, but what do instructors and greeters do? (I mean, I know greeters greet newcomers, but is that all they do?)

Greeter

A greeter is very active, especially in the Welcome forum. They should take the time to introduce themselves to new users, although certainly not every single new user! Greeters are the first members that a new member will meet, and are thus responsible for answering any initial questions.

Instructor

An instructor routinely takes the time to critique submissions, publish writing tips, and may even offer an online class here at YWS. In short, instructors go above and beyond in helping others to improve their writing.

Greeters are very active in the Welcome forums, but they also help out newbies whenever they need it. A new member can count on Greeters knowing their way all around the site and being able to give the grand tour if needed. To be a Greeter you have to be patient with a lot of questions and be very friendly.

Instructors are supposed to, of course, give very helpful critiques and know how to help someone improve their writing. You can look at the Instructors' reviews to see some examples of thorough crits. They review frequently and are always there to help.
