Hi there

Can someone please give me a rundown on how the point system works? Which posts gain you points, which posts use up your points etc.

Ok; I'm not too sure about the forums but writing you gain points for reviewing (you get more if it's longer) and you lose points for posting :'(

If you give a long review you get lots of points, if you post a shorter, you get less, if you post a tiny one it comes up saying the message you typed is too small to be counted as a review

You lose points for posting, but if it's in the advanced critiques you lose 500 points for posting.

If you're talking about posting brand new topics, then just click "new topic," which should be at the top left of every page. You just have to make sure that you're on the right board. For example, if you want to post a poem, you would have to go to the writing category (you can get there at the top of the page) then you go to the correct poetry board. From there, you can create a new topic for your poem. Just make sure to rate it!

If you need any help, you can either private message one of the people with colored names (I have a green name because I'm a moderator) and ask them for help. All you have to do is click the "PM Me!" button at the bottom of our posts.

And check out the help desk. There's some really neat stuff there.

Can you erase your posts?

Hey there,

You should be able to delete certain posts by clicking on the little blue 'X' on the right hand side of the post. If you can't do this then you can always pm a JM or Mod who may be able to help you, depending on what type of post it is and the reasons you want to delete it.

The blue X only exists when you want to erase a reivew.

It is preferred that you delete the content of a post and ask a moderator to lock the thread if it's for a piece of literary work. If it's a post in the lounge or randomness, just erase the content of it and you can type something along the lines of '[Removed]'.

Psh... write like that and you'll never be discovered. We like proper English here. And publishers and agents like proper English too. So write proper English, and we'll see!

As far as your actual question? This site has an annual literary journal that gets published, so a handful of our members are published. A couple of us have won writing contests and such, others have gotten agents, though I don't know of any published books yet... that's still in the works (it takes a year or such to actually go through the publishing process). And a couple more have had their poems accepted in poetry anthologies.

Do they get discovered here? Not usually. Agents have visited this site before (I know... there are some agents that have commented on the YWS blog,) but work doesn't usually get discovered here. Agents prefer to have the writers come to them still. This is mostly a support group for young, emerging writers like yourself to hone their craft and get better. There are published authors scattered around the site, but we can't land you a publishing deal. That's still the work you have to bear.

boltageman >> Points are the currency of YWS! Say you have a story that you want to post in Other Fiction. To post, you would have to spend 150 points. That way, we don't have people posting twelve chapters in a row and demanding everyone to read it. That has happened before! But you can earn points. Just critique stories or poems or participate in special forums (I'll let you discover those forums. ) That way, active members can get more points so they can post their stories and poems.

The top points earner of the week gets a special spot on the front page. Free advertisement! But those are mainly some very big critiquers. I'm sure you can join their ranks.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of joining a group? What are they? What do they do? What is the point? Besically I just don't get it. A short run down of what they are and why to join them would be appreciated. Or just point me to where someone else has already posted that. Thanks.
