rain stained windows watch me,
sitting at the children's table in
the waiting room,
looking at Highlights (trademark) magazine
and also at a box of 32 crayons
that only has 30,
missing "apricot"
and "brick red".
i think to myself:
i'm tired of
reading books nowadays,
everything is so predictable
but mostly i can't sit
still
and i never seem to understand
that the water snake is a symbol
for temptation
until someone informs me

Your comment was posted, but it wasn’t long enough to count as a review. Reviews need about four complete sentences (at least 250 characters). Try writing another review that explains your thoughts in more detail — the author will appreciate it, and you’ll earn points for it.
Sorry, I didn't realize the character was based off a mentally unstable person. It makes more sense now, also after reading the other comments. Is this the reason you didn't capitalize everything?
Hello! I'm going to do a review for your poem.
First of all, I could easily imagine the setting of the poem, so great job! I'm guessing it's a doctors office, and it seems very realistic. The rain and crayons add to the environment of the children's waiting room. Is the character getting older? I thought that because you said, "everything is so predictable." Is this poem based on real experiences? I was just completely transported to the setting because it seemed so real and vivid.
I don't really understand the third to last line of this. I like how your poem jumps from topic to topic, but I think that is a little confusing. Maybe change it, and then edit the last two lines as well.
For your 4th, line, I think when you say "Highlights (trademark)" it throws off the rhythm of the poem. It was a little too specific when you said "Highlights" and I think you should change it to "magazine" with an adjective before it. I also don't think (trademark) is necessary. It also throws off the reader.
Also, you should definitely capitalize your "Is," (I) and add some punctuation. After you add some periods or commas after each sentence, you can decide what to capitalize at the start of each line.
I think your poem was out of the ordinary, but that is far from bad! I think you talked about a variety of things without going completely off topic. Happy writing!
Hi there! Purple here to give your poem a review. Let's get started, shall we?
Up until the word "still" I sort of liked where it was going. This, to me, felt like a very open-ended poem which the reader could interpret however they pleased. Personally, I imagined a mentally unstable person waiting in a hospital of some sort to be evaluated and told something they already know about their health. However, I felt like this was a lost opportunity and it frankly took a strange turn that had no meaning to the rest of the poem. The last four lines made no sense. Maybe, as an author, you experienced something to connect those lines; but, as a reader, there was major disconnect. I would personally omit those last 4 lines completely.
As for what I called a lost opportunity, I noticed multiple places where you could add symbolism yet did not. I know everyone has a specific writing style so this isn't a correction, only a mere suggestion. With the colors you chose to be missing from the crayon box, you could connect a million things to their titles. For example, the brick red could connect to feeling trapped in a brick red home where the narrator experienced something traumatic. I think those elements would elevate your writing to another level, and it would be more comprehensible to a wider audience.
Good luck on your writing endeavors and have a great day!
Thank you for the review. I was really trying to go with the original impression you had about the mentally unstable person waiting. The reason the last lines didn't connect was to stimulate the mind of someone who darts back and forth between thoughts. When thinking of it that way, does it still not work for you? Or is it still to weak? I really like the idea of connecting symbolism to the color names. Originally I just chose those names at random, trying to replicate the specificity of the ordinary everyday happenings of life. I did it so specific because I thought it would look like someone was so obsessive that they actually took time to note which ones were missing. Thank you so much for giving me such a wonderful idea to take such an accidental line and turn it into more; it could act as a backstory or perhaps provide a different little off topic twist for it. Have a wonderful day and thank you again!
I think if you wanted to take the approach of someone who darts between thoughts, then this poem might have to be much longer for that to be understood. Otherwise, ending on that note was slightly confusing. If you interject with random thoughts, but still end on the same thought you started with, then it could work depending on how you execute it. I'm glad I interpreted the first part how you intended! lol
