Who is willing when others are not?

PreviousNext

The wind blew the autumn leaves to the ground, and I stood over her grave. It felt weird though, because even if she was gone you could feel her presence. It was the month of September when we heard the news that my grandma, Maria, wasn't doing well. Then the inevitable occurred, on September 6th, 2023 she passed.

This was about a year ago from now, and its effect is still here. She was one of the strongest people I know, and it sounds like I'm exaggerating but I can promise you I'm not. I didn't know her well but she was my mother's mom. My mother always had the best things to say about Maria, she was probably one of the most selfless people there can be. She was from Colombia originally but my grandpa was a CIA agent so they moved often. My mom always said my grandma was her best friend and I never understood it until now because my mom is my best friend. It's weird to think that it's been a year already.

Now, just to clarify no one is the star of this paper except my grandma. She had a tough life and still was always positive. Though, my mom is definitely the runner-up, and I think she got it from Maria. I have always said my mom was my hero not because she was my mom but because of the way she was with others, being willing to go to endless lengths of sacrifice. I think that's the same way my mom felt about my grandma. As September just passed, it made me think of her. It made me think of the mark she left on the world. She endured a lot yet never became cold and that's so hard to find in a person. I always wondered why she sacrificed or why anyone did.

I guess people would say love and as a kid, I never really understood it because growing up it felt like love wasn't real. Growing up knowing the word love really meant nothing to you definitely is why I never understood why they were so willing to give up everything for someone. Even now, I still don't really comprehend it because you give and give and give. When do you ever get back? I see now that love can make a person want to be good and want to see the good in others.

My grandma might've not been your hero or anyone else's but she's mine. She didn't save me like in the movies or have superpowers but she raised my mom and made my mom into the best version of herself she could be, creating her into the best mother for me and my sisters.

Hey! Hey! Hey! AnotherCrowInRow is here with a review of your fantastic work. Let's get straight to the point, shall we?
I can strongly feel your love for your grandmother throughout the piece - every sentence is somehow soaked in love for this person and everything she meant to you. Reading this piece really brought out a lot of emotions in me as I myself have never had a good relationship with my family.
I was very interested in the part where you tell us about who Maria actually was. Her life story sounds extremely interesting. I like how you gradually transitioned to talking about your mom, but at the same time didn't completely leave the main theme of your narrative behind - even the parts about your mom are still talking about your grandmother in a way, if that makes sense.
It's a very personal piece, which is helped by the fact that it's in first person, which makes it all sound a bit more personal and real - which is great, because what else would a narrative like this be if not personal and real? In this part of the review I would usually talk about my favourite parts of the work in question, but in this case I can't pick just any excerpts.
The whole work holds together as it is, in a way it only can with the help of your excellent narrative voice.
This review is different than the ones I usually write, but it's written for a different type of work than the ones I usually write, so hopefully it will give you at least something.
Have a nice rest of day/night/whatever since timezones are chaotic and stay safe!

Thank you so much, the anniversary of her death just passed a few months ago, and although I wasn't close to her; I feel like her story was so unheard and I just like writing sometimes! It felt surreal writing it too because my mom had a hard time with her death so she was super ecstatic to see my writing about it!

Hello Veranet, what a beautiful story! I know the feeling of losing your grandparents and how sad it can be. I don't know if this is actually based on your real life(in which case, so sorry for your loss), but I will be writing a review for this piece of literature as if it was literature rather than real life. So, let's dive in shall we?

First Impressions
Oh wow, what an opening. The gentle yet careful way you introduce us to your (idk what to say since this story is in 1st person perspective so I will be saying you for you, Veranet and you for all mentions of our narrator) grandma is really nice, and I like how this story is told from your point of view, where everything is less objective, and it feels more like a tale, especially since the stories are second-hand as your mother was the one to tell you these stories.

For The Story
There isn't really much to critique here, as this story feels more like just a real person somewhere in the world talking about their grandma. You are also really relatable in this story as a loss of a family member is bound to happen to everyone, and you did a great job catching how that emotion sometimes can be.

I also really enjoyed the ending in particular, where it shows that, although this story is short, there is still development that happened as you told the readers what kind of person your grandma is, and what influence she had on your mom, who in turn had an influence on you.

All In All
A nice, heart-wrenching yet heart-warming story, and I really like your writing style! Also, welcome to YWS :)

Hey, thank you so much for the welcome and review! This is based on real life and from my point of view! I appreciate the overall review of my story because I loved this piece from myself. Again, thank you, and have a great day!

As my artist’s statement explains, my work is utterly incomprehensible and is therefore full of deep significance.
