The Mid

by undertheshadow

There is a fine line betweet fantasy and reality. It's has such a transparency that not many people can tell the difference. This can be a dangerous thing for anyone. You could be living what you think is a fantasy and then BAM! out of no where you realize you were just dreaming. You wake to find you were fantasizing about the life you wish you were living; but now, you're back to reality. I would know because I'm speaking from experience. I'm not saying I've gotten stuck in the mid (not knowing if you're in fantasy or reality). I've experienced it from the outside, being the onlooker of the situation. My...I can't really call him a friend...acquaintance, shall I say, went through this. He got it bad, no, worse than bad. He was so lost he didn't even know which world he was living in. From the very beginning I knew something was wrong; I knew he needed help.

He has a listening problem. No matter how many people told him he needed to see someone, he would just brush it off and ignore it. Every single time. The first time he had an episode I thought he was just playing a joke on me. Leny loved to play jokes. In fact people often referred to him as "The Joker". On Halloween he even dressed up like the character from The Dark Knight. But this time...this time he wasn't joking. Something was wrong and it took me a little too long to figure it out.

I woke up to a bang the morning of our midterms. I sat up in panic thinking my roommate and I were being robbed. As I rubbed my eyes clear I saw Lana standing at the end of my bed staring at me apologetically.

"Uh... My hair dryer kind of, uh, slipped," she studdered. I looked down at her feet and saw her hair dryer lying in three pieces on the floor. I couldn't help but burst into a wild fit of laughter. She was excessively clumsy and super easy going, so she laughed with me.

As our laughter receded, she slowly started panicking about our midterm. We are scheduled to take it around eleven in the morning, and it is about nine thirty now. Lana usually passes her classes by the skin of her teeth. She rarely ever studies, only when I make her; she's always wasting her time on pointless things...but she always seems to make it.

Around midterm time she never fails to have a freak-out or two. Studdering and sweating begins around her face while she's getting ready to set off to the class room where the actual test takes place.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),

Hi! I'm Knight Hardy here on a mission to ensure that all works on YWS has at least two reviews. You will probably never see this but....Imma do this anyway.

First Impression: A very intriguing first part here, its something that I believe I haven't run into before and it seems like it could make for quite a story right here.

Anyway let's get right to it,

Oooh, well, this is off to a very interesting start there, certainly a rather unique idea there...not something that I've run into before. The way that fantasy and reality have almost been talked of as separate worlds with this thing known as The Mid. Its a very intriguing start here, and its definitely got my attention rather quickly here.

Well...that sounds positively ominous right there...its a very interesting problem that these folks appear to be dealing with here, and I'm loving the vibe of this particular paragraph here with a very clear tension appearing in the background that something pretty bad may have happened here.

Okayy....well that sounded a bit anticlimactic there...the way the previous paragraph was set up it seemed like something a lot more severe would happen here...but I do love this incident that you've gone with, its very to explain away as someone being clumsy and dismiss it but if you analyze in detail, it is rather sketchy. Certainly gets across the point of a sign that was ignored.

Okay...well that's a very intriguing little end there to that scene...there's definitely a few red flags slowly flying in the background of that, and its a bit of a cliffhangery ending too. All in all, not a bad way at all to close out this first part here.

Aaaaand that's it for this one.

Overall: Overall, a pretty solid looking start to a story here. It seems to have most of the essentials you want at the start of a story at any rate and it seems like something that I'd potentially continue reading too :D

As always remember to take what you think was helpful and forget the rest.

Stay Safe
Harry

I'm very interested in this character, and elaboration on him and whatever story you have to tell. The idea of whats really reality and fantasy can be scary and thought provoking, and you saying you had an acquaintance that was stuck reminded me of an own friend. he is schizophrenic, and the subject of distinguishing dreams from reality always offset him, he was such a fun and caring person but had such an apparent dark side also. Whatever thoughts you have for this i'd say carry them out. :D

Thank you! I'm still working on the story obviously, but I'd really appreciate if you'd keep checking in on my story! :)
