I stared at my older “siblings” as my mommy had called them. They looked like opposites, slightly. I didn't remember them. I don't think I had ever seen them in person, just in the photos in our living room.
Mommy told me their names were Wesley and Joanna. Wesley seemed slightly mean, where Joanna was a sweetheart, just like Mommy said.
I continued staring at the pair, slightly confused. They were staring at each other with an odd look on their faces. Like they weren't sure what to do.
“Wesley, why did you slam the door?” I asked, feeling very shy of him at the moment. He was big and tan and mean looking.
His gaze turned to mine, I think that's what it's called, and smiled softly. “I wasn't upset or anything.” he said, walking over to me.
I don't quite remember what happened after that. All I knew was Daddy came in there and hugged all of us good night and sent us all to bed. He carried me to my room, and read me a bed time story. He then tucked me in the bed, and kissed my forehead.
Just like he had done every night prior to that, and after that. I fell asleep, and he stayed in there, watching me sleep.
Then later Mommy would come in and do the same routine, kiss me on the forehead and watch me sleep for a little while.
The next thing I saw was the sun rising, and I remember rolling over and going back to sleep. We were shopping that day. All five of us.
And then I shot out of bed and ran down the hallway and stood in the doorway of my older sister's room.
There she was, sleeping silently. The girl that mirrored the one in the pictures in my living room. She was sleeping soundly. Her walls were brighter than my own, and I felt sort of jealous. My walls were a light purple, but they were pretty, so it was okay.
Then Mommy came and herded me back to my room and brushed my hair.
“Can I wear my purple Hello Kitty dress?” I asked quietly, looking up at her.
She smiled and helped me into the dress. It was cold against my body. And yet, it made me feel so overwhelmingly pretty.
Mommy said she was going to wake up Wesley and Joanna, and that Daddy had breakfast on the table.
I sprinted down the hallway to breakfast.
French toast, yum.
