Magician's Wars Chapter 4

Avalon High was now completely quiet. Not a sound was uttered, except for the dripping faucet in the water fountain down the hall. Suddenly, the sound of heels echoed as a hooded figure strolled down the hallway. Looking out of the window, she spotted Genji and Gabrielle walking away from campus and heading down the street. she struck against the wall as she growled. “Damn it! Those two are going to hinder my plans! I need to deal with this quick before the master gets wind of this!” She moved away, leaving a large crater molded into the wall.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day came very fast as the golden sun radiated onto the Albury Household. Feeling the sun’s light stinging his face, Genji had gotten out of bed and slugged his way out of his room and into the bathroom. He trailed both of his hands down his face. His eyes were too heavy to stay open as he let out a bellowing yawn. Turning the shower head on, he stood in the middle of the shower, feeling the cold water turned hot as he felt the euphoric surge getting his blood pumping throughout his nerves. A small grin cracked on his face. Genji leaned his head against his head and stood for about 30 minutes before his eyes fluttered open.
God, what a night. Between all the action of the night before, and his uncle chewing him out when he finally got home, Genji felt like he had gotten hit by a freight train and only just survived. He leaned off the wall and needed to get ready as he grabbed the soap and shampoo. He did a pretty good job washing his cock and under his armpits, balls, and butt. Once he had finished, he shut the faucet off, got out, and got dressed as he proceeded down the steps.
He didn’t bother going for a walk as his legs barely had the energy to jog. So, he decided to head into the kitchen and plopped onto his chair. His family stared at him. Their eyes rose while the boy got himself a cup of coffee.
Rebecca put her phone down while he arched a brow. “Well…this is unusual.”
“Yeah, usually you’re out of the house and running up and down the street,” Rose stated. Her arms crossed while she leaned back against her seat.
The young man took a sip of his coffee without any cream or sugar and perked himself up. Letting out a sigh, he stared at his family with a deadpanned expression while he rubbed his forehead.
“I just decided to skip my usual morning rituals and just get ready to school.”
“Well, that’s what happens when you sneak out throughout the entire night. Because of that, you barely got any sleep and you won’t be efficient enough to take on the day ahead of you.” Joshua didn’t bother to put the newspaper in his hands down as he lectured. On the front page, it said: Flower shop owner found murdered in Hickory, NC. The Motive of death leaves local police baffled. Genji was a little unnerved by the picture but brushed it off and returned his gaze to his uncle.
Genji furrowed his brows and huffed his nostrils. Rose and Rebecca, on the other hand, didn’t want to get involved. So, they lowered their heads and turned their attention away from the two.
“Uncle Joshua. When are you going to let this go? I told you, I snuck out to retrieve my book and had trouble finding my way out.”
“If you were more responsible with your belongings, then you wouldn’t have gone through such an ordeal in the first place!”
You have no idea what I went through to get it back.Clenching his fist, Genji was becoming irate. “It was just one mistake! Let it go!”
The two went on and on for a while. Joshua and Genji clashed with one another and wouldn’t back down until either the former or the latter submitted defeat. Rebecca and Rose were starting to become anxious as they rubbed their temples and groaned. Jumping up at the opportunity, Rebecca grabbed her phone and announced erratically. “Oh, would you look at the time! Honey! You better take the kids to school fast before they become tardy!”
The three of them quickly got up and headed out the door as they got into the Uncle Joshua’s car. Closing the door behind them, Rebecca was all alone in the house. She pinched the bridge of her eyes before taking a deep breath. On her right was a picture of a beautiful woman with long blonde hair and a smile on her face. Elizabeth. I wish you were here, right now. You would have a better way of straightening out both your son and your brother.
~~~~~~~~~~~~

Since it was still a little early, the inside of the school wasn’t as busy as usual. Those who arrived early were there for personal reasons such as clubs or meetings. Walking down the hall was a young woman with short red hair and green eyes. The sound of her Mary Jane heels echoed throughout the hallway while her red and black blouse skirt amplified her natural beauty. In her hand was a paper cup full of coffee, which caused her nose to tickle from the rich aroma of French roast. She strolled into Room 109 and gingerly knocked on the opened door beside her.

“Morning, Claire. As usual, you are here early than the rest of us.” the redheaded girl greeted. Her tone was like that of a country singer’s. Her smile fell while she stared blankly.

Claire didn’t respond. She just sat at her desk with her face hovering over a pile of papers. The redhead staggered over and reached her hand over. “Claire. Are you okay?” she got her reaction when she tapped on the blonde girl’s shoulder.

“Ah!”

“Ah!”

They were both breathing frantically. Shaking her head, Claire blinked and stared at the girl in front of her. rubbing her eyes, Claire’s vision became more coherent after a few seconds.

“Oh, Mariah. When did you get here?” Claire asked. She looked to the window and was taken aback by the light.

“What time is it?”

“It’s a quarter till eight in the morning.” Rubbing her forehead, Mariah huffed her nostrils before turning back to her friend. Arching her brows, she placed the cup down on her friend’s desk. She questioned, “Claire, what time did you come to school and how long did you stay?”

Claire was a bit puzzled as she pursed her lips. She started counting her fingers while mumbling in an inaudible tone. “I came in about five in the morning and stayed for, I think, about two hours.”

All Mariah could do was stare at her friend sternly. She had to say something as she didn’t want to see her friend in such a fatigued state. “Claire, you can’t keep doing this to yourself. It ain’t healthy for you to take all of these obligations.”

“What am I supposed to do? Quit? I can’t do that.” Getting up out of her chair, the blonde girl picked up a handful of papers and circled around the room while her body shook.

“The cheer team needs help with practice at 9 AM for Friday’s game, there’s a meeting with the student council at around 3:30 PM to discuss next week’s field trip to the Museum of Natural History, and tonight’s Bible Club is having an open discussion for the meaning behind the Book of Revelations and how the signs point to the modern world! It is extremely important that I get all of this done!” She was beginning to hyperventilate. Her fingers trembled. Each sheet of paper flew onto the ground.

The pressure was getting to the blonde girl. The sound of her teeth chattering could be heard while she rubbed her hands nervously together. Grabbing her by the shoulders, Mariah stopped her friend before she completely tore at the seams.

“Claire. Breathe,” Mariah commanded sternly.

Taking a deep breath, Claire started to calm down. She reached into her own neck and began twiddling the cross on her necklace. It was one of the many things that kept her from tearing at the seams. That, and having a friend to keep her sane.

“I know you feel obligated to take care of all of these activities and it’s amazing what you sacrifice for this school, but I also know you have a lot of school work you need to do. It’s okay to ask for help from time to time, and it’s alright to take a break and make up some time to relax,” She remarked. Her gentle tone was very soothing while her grin was very reassuring for the blonde girl.

Grasping Maria’s hands, Claire started to tear up while she smiled. She murmured serenely, “That you, Maria. I don’t know what I would do without you by my side.”

Moving her hand away, Maria nonchalantly waved her hand as she chuckled. “You probably would have a mental breakdown at this point.”

She waves Claire goodbye and was preparing to walk out of the room. However, right when she turned away, her smiled faded and was replaced with a deadpanned sneer. Pathetic little whelp. I’m already starting to lose my patience with a blonde Jesus freak. She smiled menacingly.

Maria sauntered down the hallway. She was alone with no sight of anyone in front or behind her. Her shadow changed into something…not of this world.You just got to put up with it a little longer. She’s your ticket of getting what you want.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Letting out a heavy sigh, Genji leaned back against the seat of his desk. Fourth period was already over, and it was time to head home. Suddenly, right when he reached into his desk to get ready to pack, he felt some peculiar within the compartment.
“What the hell is this?” he muttered quietly.
In his hand was a red note. Opening the piece of paper, he began reading what was written on the front.
Hey, Genji. It’s me, Gabrielle. I want you to meet me in the baseball stadium after school. I want to go over something with you from last night.
Arching a brow, he paused from reading for a moment. He asked himself, “Wait. How did she slip this into my desk?” then he noticed something written on the bottom and resumed reading.
If you are wondering how I was able to slip this note into your desk, it’s because I used your split blood from the other day to help me teleport it. p.s. I’m AB positive also.
Chattering his teeth, the young man’s spine shivered as he quickly stuffed the note into his backpack. He had never felt so perturbed in his life, especially when mentioning of his own blood being used in some bizarre ritual thrown into the discussion.
Getting up and rushing out of the classroom, he gingerly staggered his way out of the school building without alarming the hall monitors. However, he stopped and pulled out his smartphone.
Hey Uncle Joshua. I’ll be comin’ home late. Have 2 stay after school for curricular reasons. See u at 5. He texted carefully.
Genji waited for a moment. After hearing a ding, he looked back but glared annoyingly.
Told you your little late-night escapade would have consequences.
Genji huffed before putting his phone back in the right pocket of his sports coat. The black color tinted with the red and white. He walked for 30 minutes down a concrete staircase, trailing his hand across an iron rail. During his descent, he couldn’t help but reassess the situation. When he finally reached the end, he looked and noticed how wide the stadium was. Genji was astounded as he walked right in through the entranceway while he surveyed his surroundings. Stretching about 320ft in diameter, the field was covered completely in red dirt and surrounded by an iron fence. The diamond encompassed about 25ft of the center while at the end of each corner stood four dugouts, two for the team and another two as spares.
Standing in the center was Gabrielle who waved at Genji with a welcoming smile. “Glad you can finally make it. I’ve been waiting for about half an hour and I’m already growing bored.”
Blowing one of his bangs away from his face, he proceeded towards Gabrielle with his hands in his pockets.
“Yeah, I’m here. So, what do you want?” Genji questioned.
Gabrielle smiled. She didn’t respond. However, feeling the hairs on his neck stand up, the young man could tell something was amiss. Lifting her right leg up, a red aura engulfed the young woman’s foot as she slammed it against the dirt.
Arching a brow, Genji merely stared perturbed. “Okay. Is there a reason you did…”? Before he could finish that sentence, the ground started to shake as the young man was taken aback by the tremors.
Genji was unnerved. He could barely hold onto his footing. However, looking over at Gabrielle, he growled but became confused as his eyes widened. What the hell?! The ground is shaking and she’s standing completely still as if nothing is happening around her. she’s the one causing all of this. so, does that mean it has no effect on her?
Placing her hands on the back of her head, Gabrielle merely winked at the young man. She teased, “Come on, Genji! You want this little quake to stop, don’t ya?! You got powers! So, show me what you got!”
I just found out this girl is the same as me, and now she’s trying to kill me?! Is she completely mental, or something?!Gritting his teeth, Genji got a hold of his bearings and charged. He clenched his fists and focused, feeling the burning sensation in the palm of his hands. His fists glowed, and a green amber burned around them. Genji sprinted towards the Latina with lightning speed. However, the tremor’s sensation made it difficult for the young man to maintain his footing.
He was close to her. “Pugnus est desperandum!” Cocking his fist back, he was ready to put an end to this ordeal. Gabrielle, on the other hand, was unmoved and was quick enough to dodge him but not before lifting her right leg up and slamming it against his back. Despite the ground already shaking, Genji’s body had left a man-sized crater onto the ground. Leaping into the air, Gabrielle cartwheeled away from her opponent and right when she stopped, she slammed her left foot against the ground.
A shockwave erupted and protruding out of the ground was a wave of stalagmites that headed straight for him. Luckily, Genji quickly stood up and dodged the attack before it could hit him. suddenly, he winced as he looked down. Blood started seeping from his abdomen through his white shirt as it stained the fabric. A small stalagmite pierced his stomach. He reached down and wrapped his fingers around the rock. Taking a deep breath, he slowly jerked it out, but the pain actively coursed through his nerves with each tugged and with one last pull, he let out a bellowing scream as he removed the stalagmite and tossed it to the ground. Although it brought him so many trepidations, he was relieved that it wasn’t deep enough to hit any vital organs.
Suddenly, he heard a menacing chuckle. He looked and saw it coming from Gabrielle. “Come on, Genji! Are you going to stop because of one little boo-boo?!” she flashed a grin in his direction while she did a couple of handstands like a jester around the young man.
Genji hissed and sprinted straight at the young woman. He thrusts his fists with all of his might, sending in a barrage in hopes of hitting her. “Ora! Ora! Ora!” He chanted loudly with each jab but was easily dodged by the young woman before him.
Gabrielle returned the favor. She leaped ten feet away and when she landed on her feet, she raised a hand to the sky. Genji stopped in his place. The earth around them had ceased shaking. Suddenly, the once clear blue sky had disappeared with the clouds growing around and consuming each other, leaving no light to shine from the sun. Genji looked up as his ears started to ring, cupping his hands against them while he cringed painfully. Falling down was a bolt of lightning that almost struck Genji but missed about a foot away from where he stood. The young man jumped back as he breathed heavily while he clenched his chest. He knew Gabrielle was responsible for it, but he was baffled why the young woman didn’t finish him off. It was like she purposely wanted to just scare him and not kill him.
“What’s the matter?! Afraid of a little lightning?” Gabrielle teased. Her voice doing baby talk as she pursed her lips mockingly.
Clasping his hands, Genji has had enough of this and wanted to an end to this duel. “Don’t get cocky! I’m just getting warmed up!” Out from his hands were sparks of electricity and right when he hovered them over the ground, bolts shot down and caused the dirt to rise in front of him.
Forming out of the ground, a long pole of about five feet stood in front of the boy. He gripped the middle and as he pulled it out, a long sharp blade appeared at the end. He swung it around acrobatically, switching it from one hand to another before holding the guandao behind his shoulders. The boy flashed a smug grin at the punk girl as he pointed the spear. I did not think those bojutsu classes would pay off eventually. Should have never given Aunt Rebecca the benefit of the doubt.
“Transmutation. Nice. And you didn’t chant this time, or need a transmutation circle,” Gabrielle mused cheekily. Bending her knees, she was getting ready to charge with her hands up to her face. “I guess, we are making progress then.” Genji was even more confused by that statement.
However, he just brushed it off and charged straight at her. Gabrielle waved her hands, sending bolts of lightning directly at her opponent, watching him dodge each and every one of them until one finally managed to hit him. The young man wreathed in pain, feeling the surge coursing through his body as he was sent flying back five feet away from Gabrielle before hitting the ground. Once he came to, he looked up and grimaced at the sight of Gabrielle sprinting towards him.
Come on, Genji. Let me see how you can get out of this. A sinister grin grew on her face. She was getting closer and closer with her hand raised in preparation to strike.
Genji had trouble standing up, using the spear like a cane to steady his stance. She was about a foot from him and with her hand cocked back, she thrust her hand to his face. Luckily, Genji dodged and shove his spear to Gabrielle’s face. While he did not intend to hit her, his blade managed to graze her cheek. Blood trickling onto the metal as she winced. Genji grimaced. Oh God. I hope she won’t get pissed at that.
Reaching her face, the emo girl touched the wound and brought her hand to her face. Her eyes widened. Then they narrowed as she glared daggers at her opponents. “Well. You finally did it. you were finally capable of leaving a mark.” Then her glare faded, and a proud smile formed on her face.
Raising her right hand, Gabrielle snapped her fingers. Everything went back to normal. The ground ceased to shake, the thunderstorm disappeared, and the cloudy sky became blue again. Even the field was so intact it didn’t look like it was touched by their fight. Genji’s jaw nearly dropped as he looked around him. “W-what the hell just happened?” He turned to Gabrielle who giggled amusingly.
“What’s so funny?” he asked, albeit jittery.
Waving her hand, she stopped and placed a hand on her hip. “I’m sorry. It’s just your expression is just cute.” Genji’s face blushed after hearing that. “Oh, come on. It’s not like I’m the first person to ever call you that. Come on, there’s a vending machine behind the fence. I’ll buy you a drink and explain what the hell just happened.” As Gabrielle was heading out the entranceway, Genji followed but as he walked, he kept staring at the spear that was still in his hand. Did I actually make this? I mean, I was thinking about it and I know I made it, but I just can’t help feeling shocked that I actually made it.
Thanks for pointing out the grammar. it's hard to keep track of it of it, especially when Microsoft word doesn't tell you or when you don't have an editor.
Hey there! Finally getting around to reviewing this.
I wasn't a huge fan of the first scene in this chapter. The dialogue was a lot more awkward than in previous parts, and it made Rebecca, Rose, and Josh feel rather flat as characters. Also, calling Genji "the young man" confused me several times when I was reading, because it's not normal for the person who's viewpoint we're in to refer to himself that way, just like it would be weird if I referred to myself as "the young woman."
God. What a night. I can’t believe uncle Josh actually chewed me out for sneaking out of the house and now I feel like I got hit by a freight train and survived. Hopefully, today won’t be so crazy and exhausting like yesterday.
This is an example of the dialogue (or, in this case, thoughts) that felt awkward and on-the-nose. It doesn't feel natural for Genji to think this here - it feels like you as the narrator are trying to tell the reader what happened between scenes. Something like this:
"God, what a night. Between all the action of the night before, and his uncle chewing him out when he finally got home, Genji felt like he had gotten hit by a freight train and only just survived" feels more natural because since Genji already knows about everything in the second sentence, he wouldn't consciously think about it, so having only the first sentence be his direct thoughts works better.
I liked the next scene a lot more, though! The dialogue was better and overall it was just a more interesting scene because it furthers the plot in a way the first scene doesn't. I really liked the contrast of Mariah's kind words to Claire and then her cruel thoughts when she left.
The final scene with Gabrielle was pretty good as well. It was pretty easy to follow what was going in the fight scene and I liked how you worked Genji's thoughts and emotions into there smoothly. Gabrielle's challenge was great. :)
One small thing:
I’ve been waiting for about an hour and a half and I’m already growing bored.”
It doesn't make sense to me that she would have been waiting that long - you said fourth period had just ended, so school had just gotten out, and she told him to meet her after school, so why would she have been waiting before that?
And I think I'll leave it at that! Good luck, and keep writing!
Here's the fourth chapter where Gabrielle and Genji test the length of their powers while the master mind operating the shadow people is revealed. We also see Claire tearing at the seems and gives some insight on why she's a fanatic and why she wants to take up such opportunities.
This might not be the best chapter but I hope you all like it.
