In Salem, Daisy, and many other lost souls in Cherry Brook

*This story is underneath my folder titled “Salem, Daisy, and other lost souls in Cherrybrook”. Gacha Club character designs are in this forum: https://www.youngwriterssociety.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=117842&start=45. Enjoy!*

Daisy liked the town of Cherrybrook for many things, but one of the things she liked about it was the quietness of the town. How everybody minded their own business.

At least, for the moment. Most people didn’t know that Daisy thought of monsters and magic…yet. Her parents certainly didn’t want her sneaking off to the local library, yet she did it anyway, searching for something to read, something to fill her mind with deep, intensive knowledge.

Daisy opened the window doors and slipped inside, careful not to make a sound. The librarian was asleep, he was drifted off into dreams.

She looked through the different books, searching for something that was remotely interesting, something that wasn’t a cookbook or an etiquette book.

Boring, boring, boring…

Daisy stopped. A brown-leather book with the words “Monsters of Mystery” scrawled on the binding in blue cursive caught her eye.

Monsters? What kind of monsters? Were they like the monsters her parents warned her about or something more?

Daisy grabbed the book and jumped out the window, heart racing with excitement over what she would discover.

There was so much to learn!

Good afternoon! Short story time :) I feel like the Green Room is getting emptier and emptier which is super motivating for me to read more!

I like the name of the town :3

I feel like this sentence part: "the quietness of the town" is a repetition of town too many. Maybe you could have gone with something more descriptive here, how the quiet manifests in this town. And if you couldn't think of something, maybe just leave it at "quietness" without the added words that don't really do anything for you here? ^^

im not sure why but this sentence feels v spooky to me: "he was drifted off into dreams" as if... the library itself caused him to fall asleep.

"or an etiquette book" Haha! XD

"and jumped out the window" Wait what? Where did the window come from? Why not describe this a bit more, where she is and why she feels the need to jump out the window instead of sneaking out? Maybe some more descriptions of her emotional state?
Also woah girl: stealing a library book now, huh? XD

hey creeper!

It seems I am a frequent flyer now!

I really like how Daisy’s curiosity comes through right away. Cherrybrook sounds quiet and ordinary at first, but then the story quickly hints that there may be monsters and secrets hiding underneath that quietness. That makes the setting feel very interesting for me because I get the sense that Daisy knows (or at least suspects) there is more to the town than everyone else sees. I also like that Daisy sneaks into the library because it shows she is a little mischievous - that makes me wonder more about her background, like if she has a history with these things.

Speaking of that, the book raises some questions for me: is Daisy stealing the book, borrowing it, or does she think the library will not miss it? What does Daisy hope to learn from the book? I feel like you could elaborate on that a bit more.

My other suggestion is adding a little more detail to slow the scene down and make it even more magical. For example, what does the library smell like? Is it dusty, dark, moonlit, creaky, etc? Does the book feel cold, warm, heavy, or strange when Daisy touches it? Small details like that would make the moment of finding the book feel even bigger, especially since Daisy clearly believes the book is important; it's hard to figure out WHY it's so important though! There are also a few sentences that could be cleaned up, so I'd suggest a glance over for grammar inconsistencies.

Anyways, this was a fun read! Hopefully all works out for Daisy!

best,
