E - Everyone

In My first novel! (Operation Firewall)

My eyes snap open as the door slams against the wall, making my heart leap to my throat.

Uncle Max is standing in the doorway, arms crossed, holding a whistle and a stopwatch like he's about to invade a country.

“It’s 4:45. Training starts in fifteen minutes.”

I blink at him, completely disoriented. “Training for what? The Hunger Games?”

He doesn’t answer. Just tosses a neatly folded set of black workout clothes and worn-in sneakers onto the bed.

“You have five minutes to get dressed. Ten to show up outside.”

“You’re joking.”

He raises an eyebrow. “Would you prefer I dump a bucket of water on you next time?”

I scowl. “You wouldn’t.”

His deadpan expression says otherwise.

“This is child cruelty,” I say with a groan, rolling out of the bed.

Uncle Max gives the faintest ghost of a smirk — blink and you'd miss it — then turns and walks away, calling over his shoulder, “Outside. 5 O’clock sharp. No excuses. You’ll want to layer, it’s cold out.”

I look at the clothes: a black T-shirt, workout pants, socks, even hair ties. They’re my size. Comfortable. Soft. Like he actually thought about what I’d need.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The backyard looks like something out of a bootcamp.

Punching bag. Obstacle course. A rope hanging from a tall beam. A stack of tires.
It’s barely past 5:00 AM, but everything is drenched in fog and misery.

Uncle Max stands in the middle of it all, arms crossed, looking like a drill sergeant from a movie.

“You’re one minute early,” he says. “Good.”

I blink. Was that a… compliment…?

Before I can figure it out, he blows the whistle.

“Warm-up. five laps. Go.”

I blink at him. “Five? I can’t even run one.”

“Then you’re about to set a personal record.”

I groan but start jogging. “You know I’m a hacker, right? We sit. We code. We don’t sprint before sunrise.”

“Then adapt.”

Half a lap in, I’m regretting every cookie I’ve ever eaten. By lap three, my lungs feel like they collapsing in protest.

Uncle Max jogs alongside me for a few seconds — not saying anything, just… matching my pace. Quiet. Steady. Watching.

By the time I stumble across the imaginary finish line, I’m 90% sweat, 10% regret, and 100% sure I’m dying. I bend over, hands on my knees, gasping like a fish flung onto a dock.

Uncle Max doesn’t give me time to recover.

“Planks. One minute. Then sit-ups. Push-ups. Mountain climbers.”

I squint up at him. “You mean now?”

“No, next week,” he says dryly. “Yes, now.”

I flop onto the grass, arms trembling, every muscle already on strike. The ground is cold, damp, and somehow comforting. If I stay here long enough, maybe I’ll become moss.

Still, I force myself into position. My whole-body shakes.

Uncle Max kneels beside me—not close, but close enough that I feel the weight of his presence.

“You’re stronger than you think,” he says quietly.

I glance at him. He’s not smirking. Not teasing.

I don’t know what to say to that, so I grit my teeth and hold the plank, every second dragging like an hour.

By the time we finish the set, my hoodie’s soaked through, and my legs feel heavy and numb, barely holding me up. But I did it. I actually did it.

Uncle Max nods once. “You did better than I expected.”

I blink at him. “Was that… a compliment?”

He shrugs. “You didn’t pass out. That’s a start.”

I try not to smile.

Try very hard.

And now I am all caught up with Nova 😊 I guess you will have to post new chapters now hehe

“like he's about to invade a country.” LOL

Oh I like how feisty Nova is when she’s startled awake. You go girl, be witty!

I also like how no nonsense Max is. Threatening to dump water on her (and we know he will do it. We know)
And I like how it comes across that he spent time thinking abt what to do with his niece :3

Small typo, five should be capitalized here: “Warm-up. five laps. “

MWAHAHAHAHA “Then you’re about to set a personal record.”

“By lap three,“ Hey look at her go, she made more than one lap!!

“If I stay here long enough, maybe I’ll become moss.” HAHAHAHA I love this!

“Was that… a compliment?” Oh this feels actually a bit repetitive since you had the exact same phrasing earlier this chapter. Might want to think of changing one or the other to bring more variety.

Alrighty, I rly enjoy these two interacting. Now go post more ò.ó

Hey! Thank you for reading and catching up with Chapter 3. I%u2019m really glad you%u2019re enjoying Nova and Max%u2019s interactions. I LOVE writing them.

Also thank you for pointing out the typo and the repeated phrasing. I completely missed those, and I have just fixed them.

I am glad that Nova (dramatic) and Max's (no nonsense) personality came across.

I have written 15 chapters so far. I just need to collect enough points to post them :smt049

This chapter describes the morning training at Uncle Max's house, which gives me a more vivid impression of what Nova's life is like. It also worked out pretty well for building up Uncle Max's character; in Chapter 2 he looked more like merely cold and indifferent, but the little details in this chapter indicated that he somehow loved and cared about Nova. I look forward to see what happens next.

Thank you so much for continuing with the story, I really appreciate that you%u2019ve stuck with Nova this far! I%u2019m so glad the training scenes helped bring her new life into focus and that Uncle Max is starting to feel more layered. He%u2019s definitely more than just the grumpy, silent type. Can%u2019t wait to hear your thoughts as the plot thickens!

And if you ever notice anything that feels off, whether it%u2019s a mistake or something that could be clearer, please don%u2019t hesitate to let me know. Feedback like that really helps me grow as a writer.

Btw, my chapter 4 is up if you'd like to check it out :)

Hi!! I would definitely check chapter 4 when I'm done with all my works (sorry I'm busy around these days). Look forward to it!

Thank you! Have you posted any of your chapters on YWS?

I haven't worked out the chapters; I'm still thinking about the plot and characters. It took me a long time to figure these out. Did you under go the same process when writing this story?

Not really, it did take me a while to settle on the story, because I had a few ideas and it was tough to choose. But once I picked this one, I already had a basic outline in mind. For example, I knew I wanted to start the novel by showing off the main character%u2019s hacking skills, then have her join a spy network in the middle, and finally save the world at the end. But beyond that, I wasn%u2019t sure about a lot of details. I just started writing, and the characters kind of developed as I went along. I didn%u2019t even create the main character%u2019s backstory until around chapter 5. Honestly, I still don%u2019t know everything about the side characters, I have a rough idea of their personalities, but I don't really know why the do, what they do, if you know what I mean.

I also find it really helpful to talk about my characters with someone else. When they ask questions or share their perspective, it helps me understand my characters better and discover things I hadn%u2019t thought of before.

My advice would be to come up with a basic main plotline and then just start writing. The rest will come with time!

I'd love to know what your story is about :)

Thanks!! I'm struggling for a more detailed plot these days, but as you said, maybe I should start writing before figuring everything out. My story is also about a teenager going on adventures and saving the world in the end, but it would work out in a deadly virus sci-fi setting (if you read my piece Character Design - Alex, that would give you a general idea of the world building). I have background stories for a number of side characters, but it's just the plot that tortured me so much (I enjoy more character building than plot construction lol)

I understand. Plots can be tricky to construct sometimes. But your story sounds interesting already.

It's great that you%u2019ve already built backstories for your side characters, that's something I%u2019m still figuring out myself. I haven%u2019t read your piece on character design yet, but I%u2019ll definitely check it out soon!

Hey great work and i love how you used vivid imagery to imerse the reader into the expierience and using descriptive language to pull us into the world that the girl sees and i also notice that you left a little bit of mystery around why or what there training for which has me a bit curious and also great work on giving each character their own distinctive voices and personalities and keep on writing

Heyy! Thank you so much for reading and leaving me a review! I%u2019m really glad the imagery and descriptions helped pull you into Nova%u2019s world, that means a lot to me. I%u2019m especially happy to hear that the mystery and character voices stood out to you! There%u2019s definitely more to uncover about what they%u2019re training for, so I hope you%u2019ll stick around as things unfold.

I should infinitely prefer a book.
