Pick and scratch

In poems and blah blah blah

Pick pick pick

Dig dig dig

Scrub scrub scrub

Rub rub rub

Cleansers and patches

Try to cover the scratches

My skin is imperfect

I want it to feel worshipped

I rub and rub

Oils and lotions in my tub

Nothing seems to work

I scratch and jerk

Stretch my awful skin

Pull it back

Is it smooth yet?

I squeeze at my nose

Nothing ever shows

My lips always bleed

All because of the deep deep need

To make my skin perfect

I’m like an addict

But the products are just a trick

So all I can do is scratch and pick

This is a simple poem sharing the feeling of self-consciousness about one's appearance. This is relatable to me as a woman who experienced teenagerhood; I was very obsessed with trying to make my skin look perfect. Later, I realized that no one's skin is perfect, and my imperfections are simply just the way my skin is. No cleanser or face mask will change my blackheads.

I really like how the subject matter focuses on the skin. I often see media depicting body dysmorphia or self-consciousness in terms of a body's size, rather than the skin itself.

I'm not sure if this poem is meant to depict a drastic case of dermatillomania, or just a regular case of picking at skin.

The style of short words repeated and rhymed with similar ones is a common poetry style in elementary-level writing. I honestly am not particularly drawn to this style, as I enjoy larger, imaginative words to describe emotions. However, I can see the value of it in this poem in context to how it reminded me of adolescence. Picking and obsessive thoughts about skin remind me of being a teenager, a transitional period from child to adult.

Great poem that made me think! Good work

Hello! It's CATS here to leave a review. Ok, the moment I saw the title I knew I had to read this. Somehow we are still not close, so let's change that <3 Let's splash in!
First, I have to say how relatable this is. I have a habit of picking at my skin too. I've watched hundreds of YouTube videos, and used hundreds of products, and they don't work. I've been doing the same routine, and it doesn't work. I'm so happy you wrote this to show that we are not alone, we are in this together.
Second, the details and rhyming is amazing, so are the onomatopoeia! This also talks about the insecurities of being a teenager, you try everything and nothing helps.
Your poems are absolutely amazing, from the bottom of my heart, and you don't care if anyone judges. My favorite poem from you, my friend! Keep writing them, you have a TALENT!!!
Sending love,
CATS :3
