Writing

Each person has a unique talent that defines him or her. What defines me is my writing, or rather, the freedom it provides. Talking traps someone, but writing frees me. Writing possesses a complexity that talking lacks; it is an underrated art that people view as simple, yet nothing about it is simple. Anyone can write down words on paper or type words into documents, but it takes a true artist to create a literary masterpiece. Writers say things in their works that they would not dare to utter in real life. I find that when I write, I am a different person. My shyness melts away when I write, and is replaced by a confidence I wish I displayed more often when I speak. As I write this, I realize the truth of my claims and cannot help but wonder why this is the case. It is a mystery that will perhaps remain unsolved, but it does not vex me.

As a child, I spent much time with my grandparents while my parents were at work. I developed an especially close bond with my grandmother. She nurtured my love for literature and writing. Although I do not see her as often as I used to, I still feel close to her. I remember how we would sit together and read fairytales in Russian. I grew to love those fantasy worlds and the magic within them, though for my first few years in school, I balked at any writing assignment I was given and usually asked my parents for help. Even when I produced a good piece of writing, I was embarrassed and thought discontent with it. It was not until I reached third grade that I grew more confident about my writing. Only once I entered high school, however, did I completely cease my hesitation. By the time I became a sophomore, I was no longer nervous or hesitant to write.

Though I previously hesitated to fulfill writing assignments, I constantly wrote in a diary during my childhood. At first, I simply jotted down random feelings and thoughts, but as I grew older, I only wrote when I was upset, releasing all my feelings of indignation, sadness, and frustration onto the pages. Writing became more than a hobby; it became my escape from reality. I retreated into my imagination, where I was in control of everything, and used it to improve my writing. Though I have stopped using a diary, I project parts of myself into the characters I write about when I work on my fanfiction and regular fiction stories. Some people say a good writer puts some of himself or herself into their characters. I cannot agree more.

My introversion has doubtless played a part in my love for writing. Although I have friends, we mostly converse on the phone or text, rarely communicating in person outside of school. I am not as quiet as I used to be, but nor am I talkative, particularly in public. The phrase 'actions speak louder than words' is something I agree with, so I prefer not to speak too often. My preference is to let my actions and writing talk for me and I do believe the latter has succeeded in its task today.

Hi Rose! Becca here for a quick review.

I'm so happy to see a college essay, that's one of the first things I posted on YWS way back when, and made tons of friends on this site who went on that journey with me which I'm super grateful for.

Now to actually talking about your piece...

I love that you're writing your college essay about writing. It's meta in a way. I think the second paragraph in particular is definitely screaming for some love, and by love I mean imagery and sensory details. What did you look like when you were with your grandmother? That's a scene waiting to be painted.

I just taught my high schoolers today, it's not what you write about for these essays, it's how you write them. Show me the story, rather than telling me, of how you found writing.

I hope that helps. Write on and best of luck with the college applications!

I loved the first paragraph and instantly thought that this writing is gonna be amazing.
In the second paragraph, you kind of drifted away from the actual topic.
I can relate to a lot of things that you have written here.
The first paragraph was the best amongst all because you sounded more poetic. And that's how a creative writing article should be. But overall, it was a good article.
Keep on writing and I wish you good luck for your future.

Heyo! Fea here to review!

Honestly, I found this to be pretty much flawless. The grammar and spelling is good, the subject is good, the supports are good, the style is good- it's a very nice piece of work.

The one thing I would suggest is see if you can cut down on the commas. Replace some with semicolons or colons. Others break into multiple sentences.

Other than that, this is a beautiful essay! Wonderful job!

Hey there!

Wow, so I loved this. As a writer myself, I can relate to a lot of this, and I think you did an excellent job in writing a strong essay about the importance of writing to you and how it has grown with you over time.

The phrase 'actions speak louder than verbs

Isn't it "words" not "verbs"? I think you got a little mixed up.

Even I produced a good piece of writing

I think you meant "Even if I produced..."?

I feel like the main topic of your article/essay (I think it's more of a personal essay) is the shyness and introversion, and how that's played a part in your writing. To me, that seems the central theme, and that's what sticks out the most (mentioned both in the opening paragraph and in the conclusion). The conclusion in particular felt it to be majorly about introversion, and maybe just adding a sentence or two more about writing in general? It feels a bit lacking.

The title feels a bit too general - sure, it fits the topic, but there doesn't feel like anything that really grabs me in. "Writing" is the title for many, many things and I've seen it used on here before. I think something a bit more interesting would pull in readers better!

I think those two are only my real criticisms and they're not too big, either! I think you did a wonderful job - I love the strength and power this has, and though I can relate it feels very personalized and seems to be made your own.

Have a good day!

Thanks so much I'll fix that error

Hi, @RoseTulipLily!

Your essay was quite clear and strong about how writing has defined you. Many have often expressed something controversial in their writing, and I wholeheartedly agree that writing is sometimes easier than saying things. Your ideas were quite organized as well. I'll probably end up commenting more on your sentence structure and I hope you don't mind :).

In hindsight, she is responsible for my love for literature and writing.

This sentence was slightly weak. Changing "she is responsible for" to "she nurtured" would strengthen it.

Even I produced a good piece of writing, I was embaresssed and thought it was terrible.

"thought it was terrible" wasn't particularly great compared to the rest of your sentences. Try running a thesaurus search to find a phrase/word to replace it, such as "dissatisfied" (though that isn't a particularly good choice either ;)). I'll kill two birds with one stone and add that "embaresssed" could be "embarrassed".

They say a good writer puts some of himself or herself into the characters they write about. I cannot agree more.

This makes your essay weaker. You need to clarify "they". Who are they? I would have liked some specificity.

But other than those points, your essay was very enjoyable to read and many of your choice of words were very specific and strengthened your work.

Thank you very much. I will definitely follow your advice :)
