Chapter 6

Aryan City delights

Although Aryan are not fond of tourists, at night there is paid entry to all museums, art galleries and tourist spots. It is after dark that you see all of the beauty of the towering city. You can marvel at the tallest of buildings, glued to the city's skyline, wander round the worlds first concentration camp, gas chamber and many more. There is even a great chocolate shop on the bridge across Baltic sea. New Aryan city is a never ending expanse of flashing lights and straight motorways.

It is advised that you leave New Aryan city before morning, as the guards can be unfriendly towards foreigners.

The ursine urban travel guide

I woke to the eyes staring at me, after painting I had simply flopped onto my mattress and slept solidly for what I now knew to have been around twenty hours hibernation. I traced the black outlines of the differently coloured eyes with my finger with only slight amounts of recognition on how they got there. Sunlight blared from outside, through my still wide open windows.

I left the house, strolling towards an undetermined point. I would probably have met Matt that day, if I were still talking to him. Instead I wandered meaninglessly down the forest path. Each flower, each reminder of my home seemed to sour me. It wasn't that I didn't love my home land, but I didn't have a patriotic bone in my body; plus I always liked skyscrapers and flashing lights- a more Aryan city trait. Birds chirped, flowers bloomed, it was hard to believe it was winter. The air seemed to have a warm feel, sunglass rather than woolly hat weather.

I stopped dead, realising where I was. Of all places. I had wandered absent mindedly, my feet taking me on many unbeaten paths, yet somehow I had managed to navigate through the thick forests and end up on the edge of a field. The tree crouched, looming over me, leaves intact despite the calender. I sighed to myself, automatically striding towards its trunk. I lay down, its leaves a protective umbrella around me, clearing my mind of all bad thoughts, Matt, Aryans. I spent ages, just sitting there, glancing across the fields as their colour was, once again blooming- for no apparent reason summer had come early. Wildlife, unlike that which I had seen since the previous summer was packed tightly into the field, every blade of grass was rustled by a rabbit, or pushed aside by a prancing deer. Suddenly I remembered why I used to come here, before Lilac, it still hurt to think of her name, I used to walk down every Sunday, book in hand, read by this tree, alone. It was nice, a happier time. For one second I thought that maybe, just maybe I could return to that. A figure emerged from the long flowers.

I couldn't breathe. I didn't move. I attempted to say something, anything, but it came out as a gasp. She stood, face pale, eyes just as beautiful as the last time I saw her. I watched as she opened her mouth, then shut it again abruptly. Her fingers clenched into fists, eyes widening in, was it pain on her features?

“I'm so sorry.” She spoke at last, brushing a black strand of hair from her blushing cheek. “I know you don't want to talk to me.”

“How did you know I was here?” I didn't know I was going to be here so how could she? It was all I could do not to say the three words that I had never told her.

“I didn't.” She smiled, but her eyes were fighting back tears. She stepped closer, kneeling just below me on the soft grass. “I just... I don't even know why I'm here. I got in my car and I was driving and then I realised I had crossed the border to ursine territory and well... here I am.” She laughed bitterly, tears now streaming down her face. I joined in laughing, the coincidence striking me hard.

“So, why didn't you just drive back in the opposite direction?” My words came out harsher than I'd expected. Another tear streaked down her cheek.

“Because I didn't want to. I can't take this, I can't keep doing what's right for my family and my society. I told my friends about you and they were disgusted. They don't get it, and now I realise that they will never get it, and that maybe I should try and do what is right for me, for once.” She covered her eyes with her palms, sighing deeply.

My face crumpled. What had she said? Something in her last sentence just didn't click with me. Maybe it was because I was so sure that this whole thing was a dream, or maybe it was because I had spent so long convincing myself that everything she had just said was not true. “Huh.” No words felt appropriate as a response to that. My mind thought fast over the running commentary that was shooting through my brain at a hundred miles per hour. I leaned closer to her. For the first time with her I felt like I was in control. A smile flicked on her lips as I brushed an escaping tear from her cheek. She let her hands drop to her sides, revealing her sparkling eyes, eyes that could not be described as any type of stone, they were so deep, so unique. I stared into them for what felt like hours, trying to read what she was really thinking, but as always it was impossible. I just had to go with my gut. The sun broke through the clouds as I kissed her.

Hello! :D Sorry I did see this up then completely forgot  it's a truly great chapter though, I love how Lilac is back!

You've already started with this before, I'm not sure about using it again as it's not giving us any new information. I'd either change it to another piece that might become relevant later on or leave it out :)

for what I now knew to have been around twenty hours hibernation. I traced the black outlines of the differently coloured eyes with my finger with only slight amounts of recognition on how they got there.

I think 'knew' should be 'know' here as you say 'now' which would mean you were referring to the present :P I think 'differently' might just sound better as 'different' too, or else I'd consider actually mentioning the two colours like saying something like 'the mismatched violet and brown pair of eyes'.

I left the house, strolling towards an undetermined point.

'strolling' is quite a casual sort of walk, I don't think it is really at place here. I'd replace it with something that shows more how he is feeling, you could even use walking and maybe add something to it- for instance 'numbly walking'.

Instead I wandered meaninglessly down the forest path.

The forest path has not been introduced earlier so it seemed a bit out of the blue here to me. I'd maybe comment on it as soon as you talk about him leaving his house or add a bit before this saying about getting to the forest or unintentionally finding himself on the fringes of the forest.

The air seemed to have a warm feel, sunglass rather than woolly hat weather.

I like this sentence a lot :P 'sunglass' might be better as 'sunglasses' though.

She stepped closer, kneeling just below me on the soft grass.

when you say 'just below me' do you mean that she is shorter than him when she kneels down? Or is he on a slope so she is actually below him? At first I had a bit of trouble getting what you meant, I think you could describe it a bit better. Perhaps saying something about her kneeling just in front of him and tilting her head up :)

I joined in laughing, the coincidence striking me hard.

I wouldn't really say it's a coincidence because obviously subconsciously she wanted to come there- maybe instead saying he is laughing about the shock of it all or something like that would work.

My mind thought fast over the running commentary that was shooting through my brain at a hundred miles per hour.

You don't mention any running commentary so I'd either change this to say something like 'My mind was crammed full of thoughts that shot through my brain at a hundred miles per hour.' or add in some commentary afterwards to show what you mean, like putting into short sentences what was going on- 'She was back. She had left her family. She wanted to be with me?'

eyes that could not be described as any type of stone,

Eyes aren't always described as type of stones, maybe it would be better to make this sentence more general for instance 'that could not be described as any other object.'

Overall: I loved the development in this part! Great ending too! :D This softer side to Lilac I think was nicely described and it wouldn't have worked if you were switching back and forth between the two as this part wouldn't have been such a surprise so I think it was a good decision to stick to the MC :) You also have some very beautiful metaphors and descriptions in here- they really were brilliant in the imagery they created.

The parts you did describe you described wonderfully, but there are a couple of areas I think you could show a little more on. When he first leaves his house it comes across a bit abruptly- I'd maybe mention something about him not being able to bear to stay inside alone or the suffocating silence or anything that just gives some more reason and a bit of a lead up to him going. I also think you could add in a couple of thoughts as he walks- as he is wandering aimlessly I'd assume he would be thinking or trying not to think so maybe showing him concentrating on the surroundings to distract himself or mentioning a couple of thoughts of his about Matt and the Aryan race would be good :) When he gets to the clearing, you show a beautiful scene and the only thing that confused me a little was the positioning of Lilac and him. When he leans in towards her I couldn't picture it because I didn't know where she was- how close, whether they were on a slope, whether he was kneeling or sitting that kind of thing. I think you could add a bit more surrounding that so it is clearer to the reader where they are sat. You describe how Lilac appears well but you could always add in what she is wearing or how she stands or something as you tend to focus on her face- although this could be because the MC is instantly drawn there.

I really did love it :) all I think you need to keep in mind is to make clear to the reader what is going on or how people get to where they do, your writing is definitely improving in not skimming over things but there are just a couple of areas that could have a really small bit added to them so that they make more sense. Great work though! I look forward to reading more, all my comments are just suggestions as always and I hope I've helped. *star*

Wow. Amazing, honestly. I LOVE it, I- I- *stammering* wow.
Ok, *trying to be rational* your adjectives were amazing. I wish I could come up with that.
During the start I was sort of wondering if a) was it possible for a human to even sleep that long [medically, that is] and b) didn't your MC eat anything? He must be starving, working all night, then not eating for another 20 hours- he must be! But that is all the criticism you'll get from me right now. Maybe just about his heart beat when he saw her. I dunno.
I honestly adore your story, adore it entirely and completely [!!!] you completely startled me with this chapter. The kiss!
Just let me say that I hate Lilac. After she's caused him all this pain, after everything, she's got some nerve. Then again, maybe that's just how their relationship goes. I still don't like her much, but hate is too strong of a word. I take it back. You can't hate something so gentle and sweet. But you can definitely dislike it. I don't like her. Haven't she even considered him being in pain? Had all she ever thought about was him not wanting to see her [*ahem too much like twilight ahem*] ? I don't get her at all. But I still like her in a way.
I understand your MC though.
Let me put it this way, you know how Twilight was all about Edward being a drug to Bella? Well, then you just describe it so much better only without those exact words. The feel of her being so much like a drug to him. Again, I just love it.
This is the point in a book when I'd put it down, rant about it to my friends for the entire day, fuming, and simply stop reading for a few days. It's how I handle things when they turn out like this. It'd take that much for me to understand they actually kissed. Take that much for me to accept it. Then I'd continue reading like a mad person.
About the plot... There's going to be a war isn't it? I'm scared of that. He's going to be a spy or something? Because he needs to have a big role. *shudders while considering the possibilities* just don't make him die. Seriously.
Every book has to have a problem. No, Lilac does not count as one. The whole book can't be about her. Something big is going to happen and it's going to happen when he's happy, when they finally make up after all that time. You know, in Twilight, in Bella's case I actually thought she had a choice [proud member of team Jacob] that she could actually leave Edward. She'd live it through. But I can see that your MC just doesn't have a choice. He can't choose to walk away from Lilac, even if it's best, even if it's healthy. No such power. And when they're together, he's going to be happy. Thrilled. And then the war will break, wouldn't it? Something must happen. Just please don't be too hard with these two. I've come to both like and dislike them, like being the stronger emotion. Let them have a happily-ever-after, twisted as it may be. No tragic endings please.

I can't wait for your next chapter [which I will read exactly two or three days for now after ranting about your story] !!!
