Chapter two
Hurrying around the corner I leaned against the south wall that lead to the garden; catching my breath.I had no idea what had just happened, Brett was gorgeous, and sweet... And he had called me beautiful... My heart skipped a beat just thinking about it.
The few times I had seen him around I had always thought he was gorgeous, but I had never actually talked to him.I had never seen him talk to anyone really just Jake. I had English with him; he was a joker, the dark and sarcastic kind that liked to cause trouble. Brett seemed to be the polar opposite of him.
My phone beeped with a text from Kelly.
Where is u?
I grimaced at her grammar and sent a quick reply telling her I’d meet up with her later, and that she needed a better dictionary on her phone.I was still shaken up from Jakes creepy pervert stare and needed to clear my head; the vibes I got off that dude on a good day generally freaked me out, today was different…Plus I needed to think about what that vision might have meant; I’d almost forgotten it during my encounter with Brett and his interesting choice of friends to say the least.
I knew just the spot.
Taking one last calming breath I walked over to the main garden. I always felt most at peace when surrounded by nature, the trees and grass made me feel like I was connecting with the earth itself -that made the school’s garden one of my most favorite places.
Settling down in the shade by a row of large palm trees, I dug my fingers into the earth and focused solely on slowing my breathing; opening my eyes I knew just the place to go as I stared off into space. I had done this on many occasions: connecting with spirits; it was both a gift and the burden that came with being gifted. Sometimes spirits were relentless in bombarding me – trying to steal my body - while at other times they disappeared from my radar altogether. Today however, they seemed more eager to connect but kept their distance.
The spirit world slowly took focus, drawing me into their parallel universe.Everything looked the same; I was still under the palm tree surrounded by roses and aloe vera plants, along with other flowers I couldn't name but were equally colorful, blowing gently in the wind.
Everything felt the same, except muted; every touch, sensation or emotion a low buzz in the background. I felt like I was floating. I liked the not feeling thing, and often came here just for the peace and quiet it offered. Sometimes I came here just get away from everything.
Ghost of the departed lingered around me as tiny orbs of white light, however today only one of them revealed their presents: My grandmother.
Evelyn Summers had died before I was born, so my parents had named me after her. As a little girl I remembered her reading me bed time stories and watching over me while I slept. It wasn't until I was eight and questioned why mum never talked to her that she told me gran had passed away before I was born.
You see the dead could reveal their spirit to you in the waking world but you had to be very perceptive to connect with them and know how to spot them. I however could do something totally different; in moments like these I could actually connect with them and visit them on their plain. Sure it was dangerous as far as Google was concerned, and grandma, but I needed to be here: it felt like coming home - where I was meant to be.
Her form materialized and her narrowed eyes met mine.I could follow her thoughts: You shouldn't be here. The thing was I came here a lot and not only that I could bring people with me. Well, once, and that was my younger brother Ty. She hadn’t revealed herself to me since then; only in dreams were she could keep me at arm’s length and away from here.
Her small frame heaved a sigh and she walked up to me calm and collected, her shoulder length blond hair blowing in the imaginary wind."You shouldn't have come here."
Her eyes were the same as mine, a rich green. A symbol of our connection to the earth she had once told me.
"I know, but I had too."
Her face softened. "You’re having a hard time accepting your fate, substituting this world for your own is not right, it’s unhealthy and dangerous."
When I didn't respond she continued: "Love is what make us strong Eve, trust is what weakens us, which is why this world is dangerous to you; you hold to much trust that it will fix things. You need to go home and feel again, feel and process that is what will help you."
I shook my head. "You don't understand, it’s more than that... this world calls to me, sometimes I -"
I couldn’t finish and looked away in shame. It was the ugly truth; as much as I enjoyed my life and friends, everything had changed. I suddenly felt like time was ticking away, that time was running out. Here everything stopped and I was safe, here, scary as it seemed was where I felt like I belonged.
She walked forward and touched my face, the action; warm and comforting was lost on me.
"This will not change what happens, what you know is in your heart. You need to accept what your body is telling you, what your mind sees."
I ignored her, not because I knew what she was saying was true, but because I didn't know what it meant. Instead I changed the subject. "Why have you stopped visiting, every time I see you its less and less frequent, and lately all you do is sprout riddles, why can't you just talk to me like a normal person? Something's happening isn't it? I can feel it. The change in the air, something dark and horrible... It sings to me."
It also horrified me.
She nodded her eyes sharp, "I can only guide you for so long Evie, I did my job, but you need to stop coming here seeking answerers you’re not ready for if you cannot even accept what's right in front of you. Coming here at a time like this is dangerous.”
Seeing my curious expression her tone abruptly changed. “Bringing him here was especially dangerous."
I blanched. "I didn't know! How could I? You said you he would get better!"
She clicked her tongue and raised a pointy old hand toward me. "You brought your brother to the spirit world Evie, what did you expect to happen? That he would be unaffected? That is a place of eternal rest and you hand delivered him to the world of the dead leaving his soul up for grabs! A part of him will always stay there until he dies, waiting to be reunited, a soul cannot be split Eve why do you think he is so sick?"
I stepped back as if she had slapped me, it was hard enough knowing I was the cause of Ty's sickness but having it spoken out loud; the anger and hatred radiating from her body? The message came through loud and clear.
Gone was the warm, gentle loving woman I had grown up with, who had comforted me through the nightmares and kissed away my tears. Instead a completely different woman stood in her place. And the way she looked at me: as if I were a rat beneath her feet that needed to be poisoned- I mentally shrunk away but refused to show fear.
When I was game enough to meet her cold stare she studied me, whatever she saw in my gaze spurred her into action. Resolved she began speaking in Latin, I stilled my mouth dropping as I began recognizing the incarnation; what was happening.
"Leave, Evie, you broke the rules now it’s up to you to fix your mistakes and face the consequences of your actions. You know what you have to do but coming here has turned into an addiction, you need to go home and be with your brother while you still can."
I shook my head horrified; she could see what happens… he was my brother, her grandchild. How could she let this continue? Why wouldn't she tell me how to reunite his soul? Why wouldn’t she let me fix this?I looked down as my hands began flickering in and out and I looked to see my body back in the real world my begin materializing.
“No! Please Grandm-“I choked, falling to my knees as everything went dark and her voice, the only thing left rung out around me.
"Death is ever looming, and it has arrived. It will be your actions that determine who suffers. Evie Claire Summers I hereby banish you from the otherworld."
I'm awear the last part makes Evelyn look bipolar i'm still fixing that up and the lay out.
in my mind she's young; 30s- 40s but has the personality of an old wise lady. her abruptness is more out of reading Evie wont stop coming to the otherworld and is trying a new tactic that will effectively hit a sore spot.
Chapter two:
Devils more into Evie’s powers with her connecting with the spirit or ‘other’ world
We meet Evie’s departed grandmother Evelyn Summers and it becomes clear Evie comes to the otherworld because it mutes her feeling and emotions, it a place she uses to get away from everything, were she doesn’t have to feel. We learn that it’s become a bit of an addiction because she’s drawn to it; it’s where she feels she belongs.
We see Evelyn’s soft side, she is wise, and humble but changes when she realizes Evie uses the otherworld as a substitute for her own so she doesn’t have to feel the guilt of causing the sickness of her little brother Ty by bringing him to the world of the dead.
Evelyn bans Evie from the otherworld, forcing Evie to go home, to process her emotions and the guilt of her past actions, so that she can be with her brother while she still can. Speaking in riddles in the hopes that Evie will be able to help her brother, she is both condescending and sneaky in which she reveals hidden information to Evie.

Hello!
I'm on my mobile right now, so I want to apologise ahead of time for all of the spelling mistakes I'm sure you'll find. Anyway, I'll do my best to give you a good review!
Alright so I'm not able to use coding on my phone, (well I can, but that would be painstakingly slow, and I'm almost positive I'd forget why I even started using it in the first place) so I'll roughly give you an overview.
The part where she texts her back about needing a better dictionary to spell right doesn't make complete sense to me. I was t quite sure what having a good dictionary had to do with being able to spell... I would just leave that part out, or replace it with "autocorrect" which is what I think you meant.
The paragraph where she is talking about her grandmothers ghost and the the following about Evelyn Summers tripped me up a bit. I finally did realise that Evelyn was the grandma (and this may be because I am a bit dumb..). I don't know- I just think a clearer transition is needed there is all.
Again, this may be me being dumb again, but when your MC talks about growing up with the grandmother near the end- didn't you mention earlier that she had died shortly after your MC was born? Or are you talking about how she was able to "connect" with her after death? I just think you need to be a little clearer here as well.
Alright, one last thing. The summaries you include are nice, but not really needed. If I were honest, I'd actually say they were kind of distracting. Then again, this may just be my own personal preference to NOT have summaries, but I felt the need to let you know.
Anyway, other than a couple of spelling mistakes, this was all I could find! Good job and keep writing!

Happy Review Day!
Thankyou so much!
I've long since decided to re edit all my works and this helps nicely.
The dictionary is more of a jab at Kelly than her texting, as you will see on more chapters she's not very smart when it comes to spelling and grammar or what certain words mean, it was more of an Evie rolling her eyes and picking on Kelly.
Thank you so much for your review! X
Ello!
Sorry the review is a little late, my wifi hasn't been playing nicely with me lately.
Anyways, before I start blabbering on about everything I love about this chapter I'm just going to get a couple of quick nitpicks out of the way.
First off, I don't know if you noticed or not but the formatting has gone a bit funny at the start? It might just be something worth fixing quickly. Also, I dont think you need the mini recaps of each chapter, it kind of messes with the flow of the piece if you get my meaning?
There are also a few small grammatical errors scattered about.
Here I think it should be presence rather than presents?
In a couple of places you might be better using a full stop rather than a comma, you just seem to have quite a few long running sentences.
Example: I can only guide you for so long Evie, I did my job. You need to stop coming here seeking answers you're not ready for if you cannot even accept what's right in front of you.
Oh yeah, there's also a typo in there with answerers rather than answers.
Okay, now I'm done with all the nitpicks, which are only little things that are easy fixes
So now I can start on all the things that I completely love about this!
First of all, YOUR ENTIRE PLOT IS AMAZING!!! I'm so curious as to where this is going to go. How does the spirit world link to Brett? What did the vision mean? I want to know more about her brother. Is there still a risk that someone could come after her soul? I dont know... and because I dont know I love it even more!
Also, I adore this line
I don't know why it's so great, it just is. I love it. It's very quoteable.
Ahhh! This is so great, I love it, I am ready for the next chapter now!
Oh, also, one last thing.
Gifted is an amazing name! It totally fits with what you've got of the story so far. If I were you that's what I'd name it
Anyways, I'm going to stop fandoming now... Maybe...
Aww Thank you!
Grammas a bitch in my opinion ha-ha, i'm always like damn, how did I not notice that!
Brett is very strongly linked to the otherworld ( being that the otherworld is not just a world for the dead but links on to other mystery's), but that's all I can say for the moment.
So is Ty, he's a bit of a miracle once everything is revealed, a breech of 'law' through a loop hole. I really kind of just want to tell you everything now ha-ha. I taking a step back and looking to follow just one thread, since I've kind of crammed all these awesome ideas and mystery's that could be spread out and become major themes in the following books. But ill still post what I've done so far but once things become more concrete, I might change what I've revealed and save other things for later books, because now that I looks back I'm just like, I haven't come back to this idea or followed up with it because I'm too busy dishing out all these big secrets xp
Never stop Fandoming !!!
Hehe I can't stop fandoming, even if I wanted to xD
I thought the same thing about the grandma. At first I was like "oh shes going to be really nice and cool" (I don't know if you've seen the vampire diaries, but she reminded me of bonnies grandma in that)
And then I was like "oh wait... No I don't like her anymore"
Ah well. I'm super excited for the next chapters anyway
