unconventionaL

This is a little proclamation
For those who do not see
That poetry isn’t bound
To solely one man’s decree.

Your lack of punctuation
Makes your poem seem adverse.

,If you try to tell me that
.I will punctuate in reverse

It’s a must to have a capital
At the beginning of each line.

correct me if i'm wrong,
but i thought this poem was mine?

A poem is not a poem
Unless each verse is rhyming.

Then to your dissatisfaction,
This isn’t a poem.

Hi Maverick,

I've just read your poem Summer Gin, which was one of the best poems I've read on this site (in my opinion), but I enjoyed this piece even more!

I think you're questioning of the "rules" of poetry and your literary response is incredibly creative.

My favourite lines were;

"correct me if i'm wrong,
but i thought this poem was mine?"

I would love to see more pieces like this, with, what seems to me, like, several layers of "unconventional" creativity. Oh! And I love your title aswell! :)

Keep Writing!

In all honesty, It just makes the poem look more professional with the correct punctuation. If you do not have that, then It just makes the poem look like it was written by a child. Even if you may have a good vocabulary which you put into poems, It just makes it much better to punctuate.

On the other hand, If you have a formal word such as "must" It's better to write this way, "It is a must to use a capital." Which sounds a bit better in my opinion. Or maybe even: "'Tis a must to use a capital."

And another thing I wanted to add, everyone should know by now that MANY poems don't rhyme and that's absolutely ridiculous to think that it can only be a poem if It has a rhyme scheme. That's just what the poetry "newbs" would say.

But overall, I like that you use poetry to tell off all the other reviewers that they can be a bit much sometimes. Jolly good! cx

I find rather amusing that you were lecturing on correct punctuation when every one of your "its" was capitalized incorrectly ^_^. Unless that was intentional to make a point?

Draw a line on the sand, call it a poem, and nobody can say you're wrong -- that's what I'm getting from this. Sure, why not.

This poem is not particularly good because it starts to talk about concepts that are the most controversial - as in - most of the people that have been at YWS for a long time are very vocal about people who comment on capitalization, and the use of peoples preconceived idea of rhyming ect. I can find that admirable. That is, if you were talking about the bad comments based on dumb conventional ideas vrs the good comments. I am an advocate for not talking about capitalization in a review. I have been vocal about that and to prove it you can see my 'how to poetry review' thread on that. But you tack on punctuation and I get confused because that is almost saying that any criticism what-so-ever is off bounds. When punctuation changes how the poem is spoken- it IS important. So we have to cross off that you are attacking people who comment on just the bad conventional comments and instead you are bashing those who comment on anything at all negatively.

You further this by saying;

correct me if i'm wrong,
but i thought this poem was mine?

which essentially is a condition that is applied to all criticisms even the good ones.

Also, about that - the premise is that the poem has always been yours but when people give you an opinion that can reinforce an idea in praise or reject that idea with criticisms - in both situations no-one is forcing you to change anything. In a review you take what you will and what you don't agree with you leave- but to say 'I thought this poem was mine?' is dishonest. I'm surprised it's not in the drama category because no-one is taking ownership over the poem. The exaggeration makes your argument seem weaker then it already is.

And this premise that you post here expecting people to not talk about criticisms like punctuation is misplaced- when posting on this website it comes with reviews. You don't have to post here. I am not trying to bash you but the concept is this; It's the equivalent of asking for honesty by posting here and then bashing the honest people. To post anywhere else may seem valid. When there is no condition that you get reviews or honesty because well, you just don't want any. There is nothing wrong with that. And theoretically - you could be talking about any other place but because you posted it here it is receptive because of the same concept - and I think you and I both know that.

Now more obviously, the poems premise is that the review is belittling the unconventional but you don't dig into it deep enough. It is too sloppy to get the point you want in a clear way. You talk about most's preconceived idea of capitalization and the use of what people believe is conventional punctuation and lastly, the preconceived idea of rhyme in each poem but how in the world does talking about punctuation - how one says something fall into that realm of belittling the unconventional? How one says something can make it more unique.

So you have all of these layers of interpretation but you open with
That poetry isn’t bound
To solely one man’s decree.
which in the poem offers no content on different perspectives other than your own. I'm not saying that layers of interpretation are always bad but this in particular goes on with too many themes. It is random gibberish that hits on points of frustration in this crowd and to me, I would like something more.

On a poetic standpoint you are not concise. Take for instance -
This is a little proclamation
For those who do not see
That poetry isn’t bound
To solely one man’s decree.

The first two lines are utterly useless - it is forced and you use your precious words in poetry to have little context and make it sound pretty with a rhyme scheme. It falls flat. The entire poem has no emotion to it, and only parts of it were original except I want all of it to be original. - it is too abstract to be fun - to rhythmless to be done well - to easy to be a good poem. Well that is just how I feel.

take and leave what you will.

In full honesty, I was trying to get across the idea that a poem doesn't necessarily need to have anything just for the sake of obeying conventional grammar & poetry rules. (ex. I am fully aware that punctuation suggestions are vital for helping flow, etc.; rather, I was trying to point out that a poem doesn't have to have it just for the sake of having it.) I see now that my choice of diction was poorly made, and instead, it sends off the childish message that a poem is untouchable for review, which is in no way a truthful statement. It is, I agree, a muddled mix of things that I still need to sort out, haha. Thanks for your honesty and advice! As someone who is not exactly in their domain when writing poetry, I found it plenty useful, and I truly appreciate the time you took to offer an in-depth review :)

You're welcome, glad you liked it.

So are you saying poems can't be reviewed? Poets have free reign in the writing world?

Although I am by no means whatsoever an expert at analyzing or writing poetry, what I%u2019m trying to get across is the idea that a poem doesn%u2019t have to be anything. Or, to be more specific, it doesn%u2019t have to follow the conventional, tightly confining rules of grammar just because someone said so. It is an extension of the poet and is their artful way of conveying an idea.

What motivated me to write this poem was seeing review critique points along the lines of %u201Cyour poem needs caps here, here and here%u201D or %u201Cthere needs to be punctuation%u201D or %u201Cpoems that don%u2019t rhyme aren%u2019t really true poetry%u201D and so on. I don't like the word "needs" used in that context. Free verse poetry doesn't need to be anything, and it is equally as legitimate and powerful as more traditional poetry.

So I guess the answer to your questions is both yes and no. No, because I am not saying poems cannot be reviewed. In fact, reviews are critical for providing a second opinion and bringing to light suggestions that can better the poem. Yes, because poetry is whatever the poet so decides.

As a subsequent effect, I hope some people will take away the idea of shifting their poetry reviewing focus off solely grammar rules and more towards suggesting enhancements for flow, language, imagery, subject matter, etc. (This may include punctuation suggestions, for example, but because it makes the poem flow more naturally, not because all poems need punctuation.)

So yeah. End rant.

And my computer did a thing again. The %u2019 are supposed to be quotation marks, but alas it was not meant to be. Let's just pretend they are actual quotation marks so my response does not look as ridiculous, okay? ;)

Hm, or it seems that %u2019 is for apostrophes, and %u201D/%u201C are for the quotations marks. Weird. If anyone has the ability to change that, feel free to do so...

How very E. E. Cummings of you!

I got such a kick out this. There is one way to simply ignore the annoyingly nit-picky laws of grammar, and another to do it while proudly brandishing it. I think I prefer the latter.

Poetry is one of those things that is admired by such particular people, while at the same time has the most leniency of rules. There is no way to really let that slide in prose, which is one of the reasons why I sometimes prefer writing poetry. There is no limit on abstraction.

Well done job on voicing the thoughts of the modern (and a bit rebellious) poet.

Excuse me, but your punctuation is all off in the second stanza, each line isn't capitalized in the third stanza, and it doesn't rhyme in the fourth. Let's keep this to PROPER poetry, shall we? GRAMATICALLY CORRECT poetry. Isn't that an oxymoron?

Can I just say Well Done? E. E. Cummings is my favorite poet, he didn't believe in rhyming, punctuation or capitalization. Instead he just let the words flow and he wrote how he wanted as it was HIS poem. He was, in a manner of speaking, a Rebel Writer, which I can appreciate. I like how cleverly done this was and the fact that you voiced every(maybe not every) poets thoughts. I guess it comes down to freedom of speech, which is gone away basically. We have a right to our opinion and to voice it, no one should be able to take that away from us. It's our right as we are free. Kinda why these protests for Indiana's low irritates me. It's their right to make that a legitimate law. We were founded on freedom of religion and speech and Americans are trying to that voice away and control our every thought. This poem expresses your right as a writer to write what ever you want and be a rebel in how you write, when you write if you write.
Good job. I liked it a lot. ^_^

Hey.

Oh my god, did you just voice out what each poet feels? :p Well, you did a great job out of it.

And I see, you've cleverly done things, which can't be criticized haha. Good job. And an awesome idea, loved it, really.

PLEASEEE do more humor :D I'd love to read more. And this one is totally right in it's place in the featured section.

Keep writing and stay blessed.

Ha ha. I like it. I hate rules, too, and take pride in bending them. I like the rhyming, and I'm in love with the literal humor. Keep writing humor.

Hey Maverick!

well o,bviously i dont have any grammar point.outs for you, ha-ha! Nicely done! This poem was highly interesting and I really loved it.

To say, I felt mildly guilty because in reviews, I often point out that 'this should be in caps' and 'you might want to take a look at the punctuations...' Well, I hope it's safe to say that my thoughts changed very much after I read and thought of your poem.

Yes, a poem IS the author's property. I entirely agree. And I do agree with the part about rhyming, because well, some people (cough, me, cough) don't like to rhyme at all... and personally, I can't rhyme. I suck at it, and that's the complete truth which becomes sad when I have to write a poem for school that RHYMES.

Great poem, Maverick. I would definitely revisit this for a later day. You have a talent for conveying your message firmly with good vocabulary that just fits the situation.

Happy writing! Mephisto

Heya!
Augustus here for the review.
Firstly, I like the pattern as well as meaning of your 'poem'. I just loved the trick you have done with last two lines of second stanza.
My thoughts are just same as yours. A poem doesn't need to rhyme or to follow any rules. It just need to show what's going on in poet's mind and what he wants to show to the readers. Dear friend, you have done very well with that.
Overall, its an interesting piece of work.
About nitpicks, you have left me with nothing to say. Seriously.
I would love to read more of your work.
Good luck and Goodbye.

Well hello there , I'm here for a review.
I see that you have a pattern for each stanza except for the last one.

The second and fourth line end with a rhyme. Then your last one do not do the same. It's interesting how you decided to end your stanza saying this isn't a poem.
It seems some what sarcastic to me.
Overall I like how you decided to write this piece. It's interesting but in a good way.

Hello, Kanome here with a review.

I like this poem because I saw what you did there, on the title and in the poem itself.

I love how you explain that someone's poem expresses an individual, plus, it shouldn't matter how it is written, because it's THEIR poem.

Therefore, I can't really say there is anything wrong with this piece cause you wrote it in a way that you wanted to write it.

That's all I can say to that.

Keep writing.
I can't wait to read more of your work.
Great job!
