Chapter Two: Climbing Out of the Pit
Avery dragged herself up the stairs, every step a battle against the searing pain that radiated from her bruised ribs. The impact of Darius’s boot still echoed in her body, each breath a painful reminder of the beating she had endured. She clung to her short sword, its weight grounding her in the moment, giving her the focus to push forward when every instinct told her to collapse. One foot in front of the other, she climbed, feeling as though the stairwell would stretch on forever, an endless spiral of agony.
At the top, Avery paused, pressing her back against the cold stone wall as she caught her breath. Her eyes flicked left and right, her senses sharpened by fear and adrenaline. The hallway above was brighter than the dungeon below, lit by flickering torches that cast long, jagged shadows along the damp, crumbling walls. Avery hugged the wall, her bare feet making barely a whisper against the creaking wooden boards beneath her. The eerie stillness around her was broken only by the faint groan of old timber, every sound amplified in the silence.
She forced herself to keep moving. She wasn’t free yet, not by a long shot. Avery’s mind honed in on her immediate needs: find something to cover her exposed skin, somewhere to regroup, and a way to keep moving forward. Her shirt hung open in tattered strips, barely clinging to her shoulders, offering little more than a feeble shield against the cold. She pulled it tighter around herself, eyes darting from door to door, hoping to find something—anything—to better protect her. Each step felt like a monumental effort, but Avery refused to stop.
Rounding a corner, Avery froze. Three armed guards stood at the far end of the hallway, a wall of muscle and steel that blocked her path. Panic shot through her, sharp and cold, as she dropped low, pressing herself against the stone. Her heart pounded violently, her breath catching in her throat. She didn’t have the strength to fight them; her body was too battered, and her grip on the sword suddenly felt feeble against their gleaming weapons.
Fear clawed at her, threatening to overwhelm her, but the dark magic inside her stirred, responding to her desperation. She felt it ripple outward, a strange, chaotic surge that distorted the air around her like shimmering heat waves. She squeezed her eyes shut, bracing for the inevitable clash.
But nothing happened.
When Avery dared to open her eyes, she saw the impossible. The guards marched right past her, expressions set and focused, unaware of her presence. They didn’t even glance in her direction, moving with the precision of soldiers following a practiced route. Avery looked down at herself and saw nothing—her body had vanished, cloaked in a faint, translucent shroud of invisibility. The magic had wrapped around her, rendering her unseen.
Avery stared at her now-invisible hands, a surge of awe and terror flooding her senses. The magic had saved her, hiding her from those who would have surely ended her without a second thought. She rose cautiously, moving silently along the wall, her mind reeling from the discovery. She had clawed her way out of the pit, and now she had a new weapon—one she hadn’t known she possessed.
With a newfound sense of purpose, Avery glided along the shadowed corridor, keeping her steps light and deliberate. Her entire body was tense, every nerve on high alert, the magic still buzzing under her skin like an untamed beast. But as she moved deeper into the fortress, something felt off.
The silence grew heavier, the hallway thick with an unnatural stillness that sent a chill through her bones. Avery slowed, her instincts screaming that something wasn’t right. The torches flickered, casting uneven light that seemed to play tricks on her eyes, and the air felt dense, almost suffocating. She scanned her surroundings, her gaze flickering to every corner, every shadow. She couldn’t see anything immediately dangerous, but the uneasy feeling gnawed at her, a primal warning that urged caution.
Something’s not right, she thought, tightening her grip on her sword. The air was too still, too charged with the expectation of violence. Avery crouched low, pressing herself against the wall as her breath hitched. She hadn’t survived this long by ignoring her instincts.
The world around her began to shift. The darkness that had once swallowed the hallway peeled back, the shadows thinning as her vision sharpened. Avery blinked, her eyes adjusting to the new depth of sight that allowed her to see through the gloom with startling clarity. The dark wasn’t a blind spot anymore—it was a canvas she could read, a map of hidden dangers laid bare before her.
She saw them then: thin, almost invisible wires crisscrossing the floor, glinting faintly as her enhanced vision picked them out of the darkness. Pressure plates were cleverly hidden beneath worn stones, each one a deadly trap designed to catch someone desperate and unaware. They were perfectly placed, lying in wait for the first misstep. But that wasn’t all.
Avery’s gaze locked onto a section of the wall, its seams barely visible. It was a hidden door, blending seamlessly with the stonework. Beyond it, she could make out shadows shifting—figures lying in wait, poised to strike. The guards she’d seen earlier weren’t oblivious; they were part of an elaborate setup, bait to lure her into a carefully laid snare.
They know I’m coming. The realization hit her like a punch. They’d underestimated her, assuming she’d stumble blindly into their trap. But with her new sight, Avery wasn’t the prey anymore. She was the predator, and she could see every weakness in their plan. The darkness wasn’t theirs—it was hers.
Steadying herself, Avery calculated her next move, her mind racing with possibilities. She wouldn’t be caught off guard, not now. She wouldn’t walk into their trap; she would dismantle it piece by piece, turning their own cunning against them. The same pit that had been dug to bury her would soon be their grave.
She moved forward with deliberate steps, tracing a safe path through the web of wires and pressure plates. Her every movement was precise, guided by the keen edge of her newfound power. The hidden door loomed ahead, and Avery approached with silent determination, her pulse steady, her breath controlled. She could sense the figures behind it, waiting to spring their ambush. But this time, Avery was ready.
She reached out, her fingers brushing against the cold stone, feeling the faint vibrations of the magic traps that buzzed like dormant wasps. With a slow, deliberate motion, she drew her short sword and prepared to strike, the weapon an extension of her will. She could see it all so clearly—the trap, the enemies beyond, and the paths they’d never expect her to take.
Avery’s grip tightened, and she pushed the door open with a quiet, calculated shove. The figures inside looked up, startled, their weapons drawn, but they were too slow. Avery burst through, her sword slicing through the air with deadly precision. She was a blur of movement, every strike purposeful, every swing infused with the dark magic that surged through her veins.
She moved like a shadow, swift and relentless, dismantling the ambush with cold efficiency. Blades clashed, sparks flew, and blood splattered the walls. Avery’s fury was a controlled storm, her magic weaving through the melee, turning every advantage into her own. The guards fell one by one, unable to keep up with her ruthless onslaught.
When the last enemy crumpled to the ground, Avery stood alone in the dim chamber, breathing heavily but victorious. The walls were stained with the evidence of her power, the bodies of her foes testament to the mistake they’d made in underestimating her. Avery wiped the blood from her sword, her eyes hard and unyielding. She had climbed out of the pit, and now she was back on her path—stronger, smarter, and more dangerous than ever.
Avery stepped back into the hallway, her senses still thrumming with adrenaline. The traps, the ambush, the guards—they were obstacles she had torn through, but the real prize was still ahead. She could feel the artifact’s presence, a pulsing rhythm that resonated with her own. She would find it, she would claim it, and anyone who tried to stop her would learn the hard way that Avery was no one’s prey.
The darkness around her shifted again, but this time it bent to her will. Avery moved forward, the shadows parting before her, guiding her steps as she continued her ascent. She was far from finished, and the fortress that had sought to bury her alive would soon bear witness to the fury of a warlock reborn.
Part 2: Striking Back
Avery steadied her breath, senses sharpened and mind focused as she prepared to turn the ambush against her enemies. The dark energy coursed through her veins, wild and volatile, a surge of raw power she was still learning to control. With precision, she slashed at one of the nearly invisible tripwires that crisscrossed the corridor. The trap sprang to life instantly—arrows erupted from hidden slits in the walls, slicing through the air with a metallic hiss.
Chaos erupted. Guards who had been poised in the shadows sprang from their hiding places, disoriented and panicked as the deadly storm of arrows rained down around them. Avery’s lips twisted into a grim smile; the ambush had crumbled before her eyes, unraveling into pandemonium. More guards, drawn by the noise, charged down the corridor from the far end, unaware that they were rushing straight into a trap of their own making.
Avery slipped back into the shadows, her presence cloaked by the darkness she commanded. She extended her hand, eyes narrowing with deadly intent. The air shimmered and twisted before her, and in an instant, the hallway exploded into a swirling storm of blades. Razor-sharp daggers spun in a violent cyclone, tearing through the advancing guards with brutal precision. Armor crumpled like paper, flesh was shredded, and the corridor was filled with screams as metal met bone in a symphony of carnage.
Without hesitation, Avery flicked her wrist again, redirecting the storm of blades toward the reinforcements barreling toward her. They charged into the spinning death trap, unaware until it was too late. Blood splattered the walls, the air filled with the sickening sound of tearing flesh and snapping bones as the guards were mowed down. Avery moved like a conductor orchestrating a deadly symphony, every movement precise, every attack merciless.
The air thickened with the scent of blood and burning ozone, the remnants of her magic lingering like a storm that refused to dissipate. Avery’s power flared again, darker this time, shadows curling around her like sentient tendrils. She focused on two guards who had narrowly escaped the initial onslaught, their expressions twisted in fear and confusion. Dark energy coiled around them, seeping into their bodies like poison. Their limbs stiffened, movements slowed, and panic overtook them as they realized they were trapped within their own failing muscles.
One guard managed a desperate swing, his blade cutting across Avery’s arm. The pain was sharp and immediate, a line of fire that seared her skin. Another swung a heavy mace, the impact knocking the wind from her lungs and sending her staggering. Avery grit her teeth, every nerve ablaze with pain, but she refused to fall. She rolled to her feet, her defiance burning hotter than the wounds.
Rage surged within her, and she thrust her palm forward. Twin bolts of crackling violet energy erupted from her fingertips, each one a concentrated burst of her wrath. The blasts struck the guards squarely in the chest, sending them flying back with bone-shattering force. They hit the stone walls hard, bodies crumpling on impact, lifeless and broken.
Avery whispered a protective incantation, feeling an invisible barrier weave around her skin—a thin but powerful shield against the next wave of attacks. A guard charged, his sword aimed for her throat, but Avery sidestepped with grace born of desperation. She met his strike with her own, her blade colliding with his in a clash of sparks and screeching metal. The guard’s strength pushed her back, but Avery’s resolve hardened. She would not be overpowered.
She channeled her magic into her sword, the steel glowing with a fierce, fiery light. Avery slashed at her opponent, the blade cutting through his armor as though it were nothing more than cloth. The guard howled as the searing heat branded his skin, forcing him back in a blind, agonized stumble. Avery pressed her advantage, her strikes relentless and unyielding.
With a final, furious cry, she unleashed a torrent of fire from her palm, the flames curling and snaking out to engulf the last guard standing. The fire roared to life, hungry and unforgiving, consuming its victim in a blaze of orange and red. The guard’s screams echoed down the corridor, cut short as the flames reduced him to little more than charred remains.
Avery stood amidst the wreckage, her breath ragged, her body battered but still defiant. The floor was slick with blood, and the air was thick with the acrid scent of burnt flesh and scorched metal. She had fought through pain, through exhaustion, and against impossible odds. She had won, but only just. Her hands still trembled with the lingering energy of the battle, the magic ebbing but not entirely spent.
Moving through the aftermath, Avery’s breaths came heavy and uneven. The adrenaline still pulsed in her veins, the aftermath of violence leaving her both exhilarated and drained. She scoured the fallen guards, searching for anything of use. One of them wore a shirt, tattered and stained, but far better than the rags she currently wore. Avery tore it free, slipping it on despite the discomfort of fabric brushing against her wounds. It was damp, sticky with blood, but it covered her—a small shield against vulnerability.
Among the carnage, she found a few gold coins, tucked into a pouch on a guard’s belt. Avery pocketed them, knowing that even the smallest currency could buy her a moment of safety or a critical advantage later. Her eyes landed on a better-crafted short sword, gleaming in the dim light. She hefted it, feeling the balance and weight, and immediately swapped her battered weapon for the newer, deadlier blade.
She glanced back down the corridor, taking in the carnage and the traps that had nearly ensnared her. With her newfound vision, the dangers were laid bare—tripwires, pressure plates, and concealed mechanisms designed to kill anyone foolish enough to stumble into them. But Avery wasn’t just anyone. She stepped forward with purpose, each stride confident and precise as she navigated the lethal gauntlet with ease. The once-hidden threats were nothing more than obstacles she could now see and dismantle.
Avery moved forward, no longer the hunted, but the hunter. The fortress had tried to bury her, trap her, and break her, but she had torn through it all. The shadows around her were no longer an enemy; they were a weapon, an ally she wielded with deadly precision. Every step forward was a declaration of defiance, every breath a testament to her will to survive.
She was far from finished. The path ahead was still riddled with danger, and the artifact she sought was closer now than ever. Avery had been forged in fire, tempered by pain, and she was ready to strike back at anyone who dared stand in her way. She tightened her grip on her new sword, her eyes burning with the unyielding resolve of a warlock unleashed.
Whatever awaited her next, Avery would meet it head-on, with blade and magic, ready to cut through anything that dared to keep her from her goal.

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!
Shalt we commence with the jinxed S’more?
Top Graham Cracker - Avery goes into a dark hallway, searching for a way out. She doesn’t understand how it could all be so calm and safe, but then she uses her powers and finds that there are hidden traps, so she works against the traps to find a way out!
Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - I think that there could be more talking in this chapter but there are other chapters to this so I’m sure that’s included in the other ones.
Chocolate Bar - I like how Avery is discovering her newfound powers in this chapter, she’s slowly learning about her true potential and that is really exciting to see. I think that my favorite part is when Avery fought the guards after she dismantled all of the traps, she’s using her strength to show that she is not playing around, not nobody should dare to mess with her. She’s really cunning and I can’t wait to see that in other stories.
Closing Graham Cracker - Overall, another suspense-inducing chapter where Avery’s fate hangs in the balance. She is fighting every single second, Andromeda’s power only swirls further within her veins and it seems like she’s got good luck on her side from the powers, but then, this is only the second chapter, and things are only bound to unravel. I will read the third chapter tomorrow and I’ll hope for the best…
I wish you a fantastic day/night! ^v^
This chapter was truly gripping, pulling me into Avery’s desperate struggle for survival and her remarkable discovery of new magical abilities. From the very beginning, I could feel her pain and determination as she dragged herself up the stairs, bruised and battered but refusing to give up. The pacing was intense and kept me on edge, particularly during the moment when the guards unknowingly passed her while she was cloaked in invisibility—it was such a nail-biting scene that I couldn’t help but root for her. Avery’s transformation from a vulnerable escapee to someone discovering her own power was a thrilling highlight, especially when her newfound ability allowed her to detect and dismantle traps with precision. It was satisfying to watch her turn the tables, outsmarting the fortress’s cunning defenses.
That said, some of the action sequences felt a bit lengthy at times, which slowed the momentum slightly. A bit of trimming in those areas might make the scenes even more impactful. The darker tone and vivid imagery were incredibly effective, creating a sense of danger and urgency throughout the chapter. However, I found myself wanting a bit more insight into Avery’s thoughts and emotions during the quieter moments—it would make her already compelling journey even more relatable and heartfelt.
Still, the chapter’s ending left me with a strong sense of determination and resilience. Avery’s growth as a character—both in strength and in resourcefulness—makes me excited to see where her journey will take her next. She’s no longer just surviving; she’s fighting back with everything she has, and it’s inspiring to see her rise from such a dark place. I’m eager to follow her path, uncover more about her powers, and watch her continue to overcome the seemingly insurmountable challenges ahead.
Ok I'm back for chapter number two! Let's get right into the review.
The description at the start of this was really powerful. I think sometimes in action sections it's easy to have the character kind of brush off their injuries, and I think you do a good job here of reminding us Avery is still hurt.
We're also getting a good view at these abilities Avery has. I feel like you're doing a great job of showing the action and raising the tension. At times, I feel like I'm holding my breath with Avery - like when the guards walked past her.
What I do feel like I'm missing though is who she is beyond these abilities and beyond whatever this mission is. I don't know much about her backstory, or get the chance to see her interact with any other characters (other than the brief exchanges last chapter). It would be good to see how she speaks with other characters she might meet to get a bit of depth beyond her fighting and magic skills. So that's what I'm hoping for in the next chapter!
I do think this chapter ends maybe too similarly to the last one in that it's her preparing for her next challenge. I'm only noting it here in case that repeats in the next chapters - I think it's probably fine for just two chapters.
Hope this was helpful!
