Chapter Four: The Artifact

Avery, ever the dramatist, couldn’t resist making an entrance. She kicked the door open with a resounding crash, the heavy wood splintering against the stone wall as she stormed into the chamber. Shadows flickered along the walls, stretching and twisting in the dim, uneven light of sputtering torches. The air was heavy with the stench of old incense and decay, and the faint murmur of arcane whispers echoed faintly, a ritual interrupted.

Startled by the intrusion, a group of cultists turned toward her. They wore dark robes adorned with symbols that glowed faintly in the torchlight, ancient glyphs that pulsed with a faint, otherworldly energy. Avery barely recognized the sigils, but she knew enough to understand that these were no ordinary zealots. They were practitioners of something old and dangerous, keepers of dark secrets that should have stayed buried.

The cultists moved with sudden, frantic urgency, daggers drawn and spells on their lips, desperate to stop the intruder who had shattered their carefully constructed sanctum. But Avery was beyond intimidation. Her patience had worn thin, her resolve hardened by pain and fury. She was done with being cautious, done with holding back. She was a storm made flesh, and there was no force on earth that could keep her from what she had come for.

With a snarl, Avery raised her hands, summoning the crackling, volatile magic that coursed through her veins. Bolts of violet lightning burst from her fingertips, each one a jagged spear of raw power that tore through the cultists with ruthless precision. The blasts sent bodies flying, robes igniting in bursts of purple flame, their screams drowned out by the searing hiss of Avery’s magic. The acrid scent of burning flesh filled the chamber as she pressed forward, her eyes locked on the center of the room, where her prize awaited.

She moved through the chaos like a wraith, her strikes unrelenting, each blast fueled by the pent-up rage that simmered just beneath her skin. One by one, the cultists fell, their incantations silenced, their bodies crumpling like discarded puppets. The last of them crashed into the wall with a sickening thud, their spell cut short by the brutal impact. Avery didn’t spare them a second glance. Her focus was singular, driven by the relentless pull of the artifact she had fought so hard to reach.

At the heart of the room, resting on a pedestal draped in ancient, moth-eaten cloth, was the object that had drawn her here. At first glance, it seemed almost mundane—a dark, weathered stone, about the size of a clenched fist. But as Avery stepped closer, her breath caught in her throat. This was no simple relic. It was a heart, petrified and grotesque, pulsing faintly with a malevolent energy that made the air around it feel thick and suffocating.

Avery stared, transfixed by the artifact’s unholy presence. Even without touching it, she could feel the dark power radiating from within, waves of cold energy that rippled through the room. That’s when Andromeda’s voice cut through her thoughts, sharp and commanding, dripping with impatience. “Take it and get the hell out of there!” The urgency in the devil’s voice was unmistakable, a tone Avery had rarely heard from her patron.

Avery’s eyes narrowed, her hesitation palpable. “No. No fucking way. Do you even understand what this is? It’s Tiamat’s heart, Andromeda. The heart of a fucking goddess. If I take this, I might as well paint a target on my back and start running.” She could feel the weight of the heart’s significance crashing down on her. This wasn’t just any artifact—it was Tiamat’s heart, the petrified core of the ancient dragon goddess herself. The stories of Tiamat’s wrath, whispered in hushed tones, flooded Avery’s mind. A being of chaos and fury, feared even by gods, and now Avery was standing before a fragment of her essence.

Andromeda’s presence flared hot in Avery’s mind, her irritation boiling over. “Do you think I give a damn about your comfort, Avery? You think I don’t know what it is? This isn’t about what you want; it’s about what I want. You’re mine, remember? This isn’t a democracy. You made a pact. Now fulfill it!”

Avery took a step back, defiance burning in her chest. “I’m not your fucking errand girl. You have no idea what taking this will mean. Every cultist, every dragon worshipper—they’ll come for me. And not just them. There are powers that sleep, powers that wake for shit like this. If I take this, I’m fucked. You know that, right?”

Andromeda’s voice dropped, cold and venomous, each word laced with barely restrained fury. “You think I’m asking? You’re in this because you’re mine, because you’re nothing without me. I’ve given you power, purpose, a reason to keep going when you should’ve died a dozen times over. Now, you’re going to take that heart, or I will find someone else who will.”

Avery clenched her fists, the storm inside her swirling with anger and fear. She wanted to throw the heart into the darkest pit she could find, to be rid of it and the trouble it would bring. But she knew Andromeda’s threats were not idle. The pact was not a bond of equals—it was chains around her wrists, and Avery was bound tight. “This isn’t what I signed up for,” she growled, her voice thick with resentment. “I didn’t ask to be your goddamn puppet.”

Andromeda’s laugh was sharp, mocking. “No, you didn’t. But here you are, and here we are. And guess what, Avery? You don’t have a choice. This is what you signed up for. I’ve kept you alive. I’ve given you power, and now you owe me. So take the heart and get the fuck out of here.”

Avery’s heart pounded, her mind a storm of fear, anger, and bitter resignation. She stared at the heart, feeling the enormity of what it represented—the power it held and the price it demanded. She had fought tooth and nail to get this far, but this was a crossroads that would mark her forever, a decision that would set her on a path she could never turn back from.

With a bitter sigh, Avery reached out, her fingers trembling as they closed around the petrified heart. It was cold, unnaturally so, and pulsed faintly under her touch, each throb a sinister reminder of the ancient power it contained. The moment Avery lifted the heart from the pedestal, the atmosphere shifted. The air grew heavier, dense with the artifact’s dark energy, pressing against her senses like an invisible weight. Avery knew there was no turning back now. She was marked, bound to a fate that promised nothing but danger and relentless pursuit.

“Now move,” Andromeda snapped, her voice cutting through the fog of Avery’s thoughts. Avery didn’t argue. She turned, heart hammering, the artifact clutched tightly as she headed toward the exit. There was no time to waste, no room for hesitation. She had come too far to falter now.

Avery’s eyes swept the room, taking in the aftermath of her assault—the scorched bodies of the cultists, the shadows clinging to the chamber’s corners. This was the heart of the fortress, the center of everything she had fought to reach, and she wouldn’t be returning. Whatever could be of use, she would take it now. She rifled through the cultists’ belongings with detached efficiency, fingers searching through pockets and pouches, finding little of value—a few trinkets, some coins, and strange, useless items she quickly discarded.

But a worn, leather backpack caught her eye. Slung over one of the cultists’ shoulders, it was battered but serviceable, and Avery grabbed it without hesitation. She needed something to carry the heart, something to keep it contained and hidden. She glanced at the pedestal where the heart had once rested, its power still hanging in the air like a phantom. Avery tore the robe from one of the fallen cultists, wrapping the heart in the rough, stained fabric, binding it tightly to keep its cold, pulsating surface from her skin. Even through the layers, she felt the heart’s dark energy seep into her fingers, a sinister presence that tugged at her mind.

As she shoved the wrapped heart into the backpack, a strange sensation coursed through her. The heart’s power bled through the fabric, creeping along her skin, cold and invasive. Avery’s vision blurred, thoughts splintering as the artifact’s influence gripped her mind. Voices echoed in her head, whispering promises of power and freedom, secrets only the heart could unlock. For a moment, she was caught, pulled into a dark, seductive realm where the heart’s power was absolute, where the chains of her pact with Andromeda seemed breakable.

The voices grew louder, insistent, filling her mind with visions of unimaginable strength and defiance. She could break free, carve her own path, wield the heart’s power like a god. But just as the temptation threatened to overwhelm her, a sudden, sharp pain snapped her back to reality. She blinked, gasping, as her vision cleared, and before her, Andromeda’s form flickered into view—an astral projection, eyes blazing with wrath.

“Wake up, you fool!” Andromeda snarled, her voice slicing through Avery’s thoughts like shards of ice. “Do you honestly think you can touch that heart and come out unscathed? You don’t get to walk away from this with just a slap on the wrist.”

Avery staggered back, her cheek stinging from the astral slap. She glanced down at the wrapped heart, feeling its cold, creeping presence tugging at her mind like icy tendrils. It whispered promises of power, of escape, but Avery clenched her jaw, shoving those thoughts into the darkest corner of her mind. She could feel Andromeda’s glare burning into her, full of barely contained fury.

“Don’t you fucking lecture me!” Avery shot back, her voice raw with defiance. “You want me to carry this thing, knowing it’ll put me on the hit list of every crazed cultist out there? You think I’m just going to—”

“You don’t get a choice,” Andromeda cut her off, her words dripping with venom. “You think I’m hard to deal with? This heart will make you its puppet. It will strip away every ounce of will you have left. You’ll be a slave, not to a devil with a purpose but to a dead dragon that wants nothing more than to claw its way back into the world using you as its vessel.”

Avery’s grip tightened on the backpack, anger boiling just beneath the surface. She could feel the heart’s malevolent presence seeping through, prodding at her defenses. “And what, you’re so much better? You’ve got me running around risking my life for you like I’m some kind of—”

“Tool? Asset? Yes, because that’s what you are,” Andromeda snapped, her voice rising, sharp and unforgiving. “But at least I let you keep your mind, your choices. Tiamat’s heart won’t give you that. You won’t just lose your freedom; you’ll lose yourself. You think I’m a bitch? Wait until you’re nothing more than a hollow shell serving the whims of a dead god.”

Avery’s breath hitched, her chest tight with a mix of fear and fury. The heart pulsed faintly, a dark reminder of the power it held, of the danger that loomed over her. She wanted to drop it, to tell Andromeda to shove it and walk away, but she knew that wasn’t an option. Not really.

“Why the hell should I trust you?” Avery challenged, her voice shaking with barely restrained anger. “You’ve lied to me—”

“I’ve never lied to you,” Andromeda interrupted, her tone icy and unyielding. “And I’m not lying now. You don’t need to like me, and I sure as hell don’t care about your approval. But if you think working for me is bad, you haven’t seen anything yet. That heart will chew you up and spit you out, and I won’t be able to save you.”

Avery’s resolve wavered, caught between the venomous truth of Andromeda’s words and the seductive whispers of the heart. She hated this—hated the feeling of being trapped, of having her fate tied to powers beyond her control. But the alternative was worse, far worse.

“Fine,” Avery spat, her voice low and filled with bitterness. “But don’t think for a second I’m doing this because I want to. I’m doing it because I don’t have a fucking choice.”

Andromeda’s expression softened into something resembling smug satisfaction, but the sharpness never left her gaze. “Good. That’s all I need from you. Now, get moving. Because if you don’t, it won’t be me you’re answering to—it’ll be something far worse. And you won’t like what it does to you.”

Avery turned away, her heart heavy with the weight of her burden, both literal and metaphorical. As she moved toward the exit, the heart’s dark pull tugged at her mind, but she forced herself forward. Whatever hell awaited her, she would face it on her terms. Because as much as she hated the devil by her side, she knew one thing for sure: Andromeda was the lesser of two evils, and Avery was damned if she’d be anyone else's slave.

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!

Shalt we commence with the scary S’more?

Top Graham Cracker - Avery makes it to the room where the artifact is kept and snatches it right up! She then starts to run with it, but the artifact’s power is seeping right through, to her veins. Andromeda doesn’t want that for her, but…would it be a good thing for Avery? Hmm…

Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - I have no recommendations to make as of right now, if you want to edit it, then that is your choice.

Chocolate Bar - I like how Avery started to doubt whether or not she should really take the heart, it shows that she doesn’t exactly like working for Andromeda. I also like how Andromeda is trying to sell the idea that working for her is better than working for Tiamat, but I doubt that it would make much of a difference. All in all, Avery’s thoughts and the interactions Avery has with Andromeda are my favorite parts.

Closing Graham Cracker - Avery has successfully gotten the artifact! She also has Andromeda’s power coursing through her veins, helping her escape! That’s good news…right? Except now, she will be hunted even more, so truly, will she ever be free? Or will she always be hunted, never seeing a chance to have alone time, to just breathe? She might always go on quests for Andromeda…I’ll have to see in the next chapter.

I wish you a delightful day/night! ^v^

This chapter was packed with intense action, vivid imagery, and emotional tension, making it an exciting and dramatic read. Avery's fierce determination and her volatile relationship with Andromeda really stand out. The pacing was fast and intense, pulling the reader into the scene, but it occasionally felt overwhelming with the sheer amount of action and emotion happening at once. The chapter does an excellent job of highlighting Avery's inner conflict and setting up the stakes around Tiamat’s heart, leaving the reader eager to know what happens next. While the action sequences are gripping, they could benefit from occasional pauses to let the reader absorb what’s happening. Adding moments of description or introspection could help balance the pacing and build more tension. Additionally, Avery and Andromeda’s dialogue is engaging but can feel repetitive at times, with both characters restating their frustrations or arguments in slightly different ways. Tightening the dialogue would make it more impactful. Lastly, the descriptions of the heart’s influence on Avery are captivating but could use more variety in how its power is described to avoid repetition.

The atmosphere in this chapter is phenomenal, from the eerie chamber with flickering shadows to the vivid imagery of Avery’s lightning magic tearing through the cultists. Avery’s emotions are raw and compelling, and her defiance against Andromeda adds depth to her character. The concept of Tiamat’s heart is unique and memorable, and the tension around its power is palpable. Andromeda’s commanding presence and sharp dialogue add an extra layer of conflict, making their dynamic fascinating to follow. This chapter leaves me curious about the consequences of Avery taking Tiamat’s heart. How will its power affect her moving forward? Will she find a way to resist its pull, or will it test her relationship with Andromeda further? Consider whether slowing down some parts might help make the stakes even more impactful. Overall, this chapter is thrilling and emotionally charged, and I can’t wait to see how Avery handles the challenges ahead!

Hi again Greyhound, I'm back for another chapter (sorry for all the notifications you must be getting from me!).

It feels like everything is coming to a head now, with the action ramping all the way up. Avery certainly seems more self assured than she did at the beginning of the story when we met her.

Shadows flickered along the walls, stretching and twisting in the dim, uneven light of sputtering torches. The air was heavy with the stench of old incense and decay, and the faint murmur of arcane whispers echoed faintly, a ritual interrupted.

I wanted to highlight this because I really liked this description. I found it very engaging and it definitely helped me picture the setting.

Now, you’re going to take that heart, or I will find someone else who will.”

I'm assuming Andromeda is bluffing here or she would have let Avery die in the first chapter. We know she's important, but I guess Avery hasn't realised in the same way we have.

“Wake up, you fool!” Andromeda snarled, her voice slicing through Avery’s thoughts like shards of ice. “Do you honestly think you can touch that heart and come out unscathed? You don’t get to walk away from this with just a slap on the wrist.”

Wouldn't it have been in Andromeda's best interests to tell her not to touch the heart before she does? She needs her to get out of there so why not equip her with this knowledge in plenty of time?

The end of this chapter was better structured too. There's still the onward quest element but it was more encased in the current danger so it felt like it was more natural.

Only one more chapter to go!

Hope this was helpful.
