Chapter Five: The Great Escape

Andromeda’s astral form flickered before Avery’s eyes, her expression a volatile mix of anger and urgency. The devil’s impatience was almost tangible, her presence pressing against Avery’s thoughts like hot coals. “If you get to the top floor, the warding protecting this place is weakest. I can force a portal open there, but that’s the last bit of help I can give,” Andromeda snapped, her voice like the dying crackle of a fire. “I’m running low on magic myself, for now. You’re deep behind enemy lines, and this is it. Get to the top floor, reach the portal, then get the hell out of there and find your way back to me. My sweet Avery.”

Avery snorted, a bitter smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth. There was nothing sweet about Andromeda’s words, just hollow endearments wrapped around demands. Avery knew exactly what she was to her patron: a tool, a weapon, a means to an end. But for once, she didn’t care. The lingering touch of Tiamat’s heart had ignited something fierce and unyielding within her. She felt her magic crackling beneath her skin, recharged and volatile, like a storm ready to break. Whatever dark energy that heart had stirred up, it was exactly what she needed now—and she was ready to use every bit of it to claw her way out of this damned place.

Without a word, Avery stepped back into the hallway, her senses sharp and her focus unbreakable. There was no time to dwell on Andromeda’s presence or the devil’s constant manipulations. She was driven by a single thought: escape. Avery broke into a run, her boots striking the stone floor with the rhythm of urgency as she sprinted toward the staircase she’d glimpsed earlier. She moved like a shadow, fluid and determined, every movement calculated, every sense attuned to the ticking clock in her mind.

The fortress loomed around her, a twisted labyrinth of cold stone and deadly traps, but Avery moved with purpose. She navigated the maze of corridors and staircases with instinctive precision, her body attuned to every shift in the air, every faint vibration of the wards that thrummed around her. The magic in the fortress was thick and heavy, like a dense fog that tried to smother her, but as she climbed higher, Avery could feel the pressure easing. She was heading in the right direction, each step taking her closer to the portal and the freedom that awaited.

Ahead, the staircase wound upward, spiraling toward the top of the fortress where Andromeda’s portal would be waiting. Avery’s heart pounded with every step, adrenaline surging through her veins, propelling her forward. She didn’t slow; there was no room for hesitation. Behind her, the shouts of guards echoed, their footsteps a distant but growing threat. She knew they were closing in, but Avery’s resolve only hardened. She wasn’t just running for her life—she was charging toward freedom.

As she ascended, Avery’s magic hummed with newfound vigor, the power within her singing in time with her heartbeat. She could feel the portal’s pull above her, faint but unmistakable, a beacon in the storm. It was calling her home, and Avery knew that nothing—not guards, cultists, or the fortress itself—would stand in her way.

The air grew hotter as she climbed, the fortress groaning around her as if protesting her presence. Every noise, every distant shout sent a surge of defiance through Avery. She was done with fear. She was done with hesitation. She was done playing by anyone else’s rules. “God forbid anyone gets in my way,” Avery muttered, the fire of her magic licking at her fingertips, itching to be unleashed. She was close now, the top of the stairs within reach. She could almost feel the rush of the portal’s magic, and she knew she would make it. She had to.

Avery stormed into the final chamber, her breaths ragged, the weight of the cursed heart in her backpack driving her forward. The adrenaline coursed through her veins, heightening every sense. There was no room for pain, no time for doubt. She was a force of nature, magic crackling under her skin, perfectly attuned to her will.

The cultists were already in motion, a mass of robed figures surging toward her with fanatical fervor. Avery didn’t hesitate. She raised her hand, and bolts of violet energy erupted from her fingertips, tearing through the first wave of attackers with merciless precision. They fell, bodies crumpling as their robes ignited, filling the air with the stench of burning flesh. Avery moved like a whirlwind, her short sword flashing in the dim light as she hacked and slashed, cutting down anyone who dared to get close.

A burst of flame roared from her left, the heat searing the air around her. Avery twisted, summoning a shimmering shield that absorbed the fire in a bright, crackling hiss. She spotted the source—a mage in blood-red robes, their hands glowing with residual embers. They snarled, raising their staff for another attack, but Avery was already moving. She flung a bolt of dark energy that shattered the staff in a violent explosion, sending splinters and sparks flying. The mage staggered, eyes wide, just before Avery’s blade sliced through their chest in a swift, brutal strike.

Another magic user appeared, casting a swirling mass of spectral chains that shot toward Avery, seeking to bind her. She leapt back, summoning her own dark magic, bending the chains to her will. They twisted midair, turning on their caster, wrapping around the mage’s limbs and pulling them to the ground in a tangled heap. Avery closed the distance in an instant, her sword arcing down in a lethal, decisive blow that silenced the threat.

Avery moved with a deadly grace, every action fueled by instinct and the surge of power coursing through her. Her magic flared, filling the air with spectral daggers that tore through the cultists who charged blindly forward. The room echoed with screams and the sickening sound of flesh meeting steel, but Avery didn’t stop. She was relentless, her eyes locked on the shimmering portal at the far end of the chamber.

A cultist lunged at her, dagger raised, and Avery met them head-on. She parried the strike and drove her sword into their gut, twisting away to send a blast of eldritch energy at two more attackers. They flew back, crashing into the stone walls in a tangle of blood and robes. She was a dancer of death, every movement a precise blend of magic and steel, her senses sharpened to the breaking point.

A towering guard charged at her, a warhammer swinging in a deadly arc. Avery ducked low, feeling the rush of air as the hammer whistled past. She rolled forward, her hand glowing as she grabbed the guard’s chestplate, channeling searing magic that melted through metal and flesh alike. The guard screamed, collapsing, and Avery wrenched her sword free, driving it into another cultist who had dared to close in.

The room was a maelstrom of fire, blood, and the relentless clash of magic. Avery could feel the edges of her vision tingling, the heart in her backpack humming with dark energy, feeding every strike, every spell. She summoned a wall of fire, pushing back the remaining cultists, the flames roaring between them like a living barrier. Avery slashed through the inferno, bending the heat around her as she carved a path toward the portal.

Phantasmal images flickered around her—twisted shadows and illusions that darted and struck, confusing the cultists, driving them to madness. They slashed at empty air, blinded by fear and the tricks Avery’s magic played on their minds. She used the chaos to her advantage, every illusion buying her precious seconds as she edged closer to her escape.

Her heart pounded, her entire body thrumming with adrenaline and dark magic. She was unstoppable, each strike landing with the precision of a masterful executioner. Avery reached the final line of guards, weapons raised, but she was done playing games. With a fierce shout, she thrust her hand forward, unleashing a shockwave of raw force that blasted them apart, scattering their bodies like broken dolls.

With a final, defiant roar, Avery sprinted the last few steps, diving into the swirling vortex of the portal. The world around her warped and twisted, the fabric of reality stretching thin. For a moment, she felt weightless, suspended in the in-between, her senses dulled by the roar of magic. Then, with a deafening crack, the portal snapped shut behind her.

Avery tumbled out onto the cold, grimy ground of an alley, the impact knocking the breath from her lungs. She lay there, gasping, every muscle screaming in protest. She was alive. Bloodied, bruised, but free. Avery rolled onto her back, staring up at the darkened sky above, the distant hum of the city, a comforting reminder that she was far from the fortress, far from the cultists who’d tried to keep her trapped. For the first time in what felt like forever, she could breathe.

The weight of everything she had endured crashed over her, the memories of the battle still vivid, etched into her mind. She had made it. She had fought through impossible odds, escaped with the artifact that so many had died to protect. Avery’s chest heaved as she pulled herself into a sitting position, her body aching with every movement, but there was a defiant smile on her lips.

Beaten, bloodied, and far from safe, Avery had survived the impossible. With Tiamat’s heart in her possession and Andromeda’s favor still hovering over her, Avery knew one thing with absolute certainty: this was just the beginning. She was still standing, and she was far from done.

Epilogue

I watch my little attack dog limp through the grimy streets of the city, the place I so graciously dropped her into. She’s blissfully unaware, of course, of the next layer of games I’ve lined up for her. Avery thinks she’s won, that she clawed her way out by sheer grit, but she doesn’t realize how much I sacrificed to get her there. I had to drain nearly everything I had to shove her through that portal. Without me, she’d still be rotting in that hellhole. And that heart she’s hauling? I need it. Desperately.

Avery is a wreck—blood-streaked, barely upright, and defiant as ever. She limps past wide-eyed citizens, their stares flitting between horror and pity. She’s dripping with enough blood to fill a tub, her sword clinking at her side like a whispered threat. She looks like she belongs to the devil—and she does. She’s mine.

I trail her every step, my presence woven snugly into the gem I implanted behind her eye. She doesn’t know that every blink, every flicker of her gaze, feeds right back to me. She stumbles into some dingy bar, slaps a few blood-soaked coins on the counter, and snarls for a drink. Even half-dead, she’s got that relentless fire burning inside her. I almost admire it. Almost.

But why stop there? Avery is mine to shape, to use, to break if I feel like it. And oh, do I feel like it. I send the faintest whisper into her mind, just a suggestion barely brushed against her consciousness: Make new friends.

The implant works like a charm, blurring the line between my will and hers. She pauses, confused for just a heartbeat, before her instincts kick in, and she does exactly what I want. She scans the room, eyes sharp and hungry, looking for something—or someone. She has no idea that she’s still on my leash, still dancing to my rhythm. This city is just the beginning. There’s so much more she’ll do, so much more to break and rebuild.

I let my form flicker at the edge of her vision, a reminder of who’s really in charge. She’s got that damned heart, she’s got that reckless courage, but freedom? That’s an illusion she’ll never hold. She’s a weapon, a tool, and as long as she’s useful, she’ll keep moving forward. I’ll make sure of that.

She raises her drink, unaware of my invisible pull, and I can’t help but smile. She’s far from safe, far from finished, and every step she takes is just another dive into my plans. My sweet, stubborn Avery. You think you’re free, but you’ve only just begun to serve.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!

Shalt we commence with the nightmare S’more?

Top Graham Cracker - Avery escapes the castle with Tiamat’s heart and ends up in a dirtied city. She has Andromeda’s eye embedded beneath her skin, but she doesn’t know that Andromeda is watching her every step. Avery may be free of her prison, but will she be free of Andromeda? Hmm…

Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - I have no recommendations to make as of right now. If you would like to edit this, then you may, but if not, then please ignore this.

Chocolate Bar - I love the difference of thoughts between Avery and Andromeda. Avery is glad that she’s tried hard to get out of the mess but Andromeda just wants to use Avery for her own gain. It again shows a sharp contrast between their characters and makes me want to see more of their relationship. I’ve also enjoyed the fights Avery had with the mages, it shows how much her fighting spirit rings true.

Closing Graham Cracker - The way her character was described in this story and in the new story really shows how much she has changed. I’m very interested in seeing how she will continue to grow into the fighter that she is and if she will ever be free from Andromeda. Probably not, but that would have to be her decision to make. Maybe over time, as she gains more power…I will have to wait and see. But with that note…

I wish you a fantastical day/night! ^v^

Hi there, Greyhound26! Dropping by to give you a review. I will be using the YWS'mores method to help structure my review. :)

The Top Graham Cracker: Wow!! This is actually insanely good? Like?? I am seriously in awe at how well-written this is. I admit that I did not read the previous chapters, although I have seen them on the site and was wanting to read them, and I did see that in chapter one, you state that this is a character you created for D&D. I seriously admire how much time and energy you put into bringing Avery to life. It's inspiring. I played D&D a few times but I must admit that my characters were always two-dimensional and I never took the time to give them much of a personality. So to see how much care and detail you put into one D&D character is seriously so cool and inspiring.

The Slightly Burnt Marshmallow: If I had to pick something to nitpick then I would say to be careful not to use the same adjectives so close together. For example, these two lines are in side-by-side paragraphs:

Andromeda’s astral form flickered before Avery’s eyes, her expression a volatile mix of anger and urgency.

She felt her magic crackling beneath her skin, recharged and volatile, like a storm ready to break.

But that's more of a personal nitpick. It's not like you're breaking any grammar or literary rules. It's just a little jarring, as it can give the reader a little bit of a deja-vu moment. Do with that what you will. ^-^

The Melty Chocolate Bar - As I told you earlier, I absolutely love the way this was written. Your narrative writing is very strong and your eye for detail is very sharp. I absolutely love the imagery in this chapter and the way you described everything -- from Avery's personality, her ambitions, and her desire to survive; to the fight scenes and how intense everything went down; to the ending where we got to see a glimpse in Andromeda's mind and her plans for Avery. It was all so well-written and I seriously enjoyed it.

My favorite lines were these:

With a final, defiant roar, Avery sprinted the last few steps, diving into the swirling vortex of the portal. The world around her warped and twisted, the fabric of reality stretching thin. For a moment, she felt weightless, suspended in the in-between, her senses dulled by the roar of magic. Then, with a deafening crack, the portal snapped shut behind her.

She’s mine.

She scans the room, eyes sharp and hungry, looking for something—or someone. She has no idea that she’s still on my leash, still dancing to my rhythm.

The Bottom Graham Cracker: Overall, I really enjoyed this and I would like for you to let me know if you decide to write for another D&D character of yours, or if you continue this story with another arc. I will definitely go back and read the other chapters if you do. This was really good and has a lot of potential. I am definitely curious to see if you do more with Andromeda?? Let me know if you do!

I hope this review was a bit helpful. :)

Whew, what an intense ending!

Avery slashed through the inferno, bending the heat around her as she carved a path toward the portal.

I love the way you write action, but I'm still feeling like I expect her to be fine. The fight is great to read, but the stakes still feel pretty low because she's been essentially battling in every chapter thus far.

In general, the plot is well paced with the action scenes and the more slow sections with Avery talking to Andromeda. I do think it would benefit from having a chapter between the action every so often, where we can really get to know Avery's character. Perhaps a flashback to her life before would allow for this without needing to break from the situation she's in.

Avery's character development was pretty clear throughout the chapters, marked by her increasing resilience, determination, and complexity. She seems a far contrast from the character that was introduced in the prologue so I wonder if that's just Andromeda's perspective/perception or whether there was a big chunk of growth that we missed between prologue and chapter one.

I think this was an epic quest, and engaging to read. I'd like to see more of Avery's character but otherwise I think this was very well done and you're right - I can definitely see the progression in your writing vs The Banished Lycan!

Hope this was helpful.
