One of my favorite things to work out was my back and shoulders. I could deadlift more than anyone else in the class. I was very proud of this and so I was constantly trying to improve. I decided that this was the day that I would finally deadlift 405 lbs. I had a bulls snapback on. I turned it around like I was Ash Ketchum getting ready for a serious gym battle. I guess I was in a gym battle. It was me vs the weight along with every other thing dragging down my spirit.
The bar got loaded up with 4 plates on either side. I was waiting for the drop in my song. My grip was inverted, palms were covered in chalk. The drop hit and I began lifting. I could feel the veins in my neck trying to burst out of my skin. The calluses on my hands were tearing. I was three quarters of the way up when my knees locked out. It was all back from here. I straightened my back, roaring in triumph and dropped the weight. I looked at Daniel pointing to my eyes. "Look at me," I said, imitating the Somali pirate from captain Philips. "I'm the captain now."
He made a bowing gesture and I knew I was the new alpha in that class. I didn't give a fuck. I walked around the rest of that period with my lats flexed and my arms not completely by my side. I was doing lat pull down with Daniel and I looked at him. "You know what. I got a fucking problem."
"What's that?" He asked.
"I can still fit through doors. It pisses me off."
I had never gotten a better pump in my back than I did that day. All of the anxiety and sadness I'd been experiencing seemed to melt away with each repetition. Elizabeth stared at me a lot but I didn't care. I was there for my damn self, telling gravity to fuck off and that it wasn't shit. I was going to lift whatever I wanted.
After that period, Nicole passed me in the halls and didn't even look me in the eyes. I'd bought her a rose-gold promise ring literally 2 weeks before she cheated on me and she did this bullshit? I sat through the next class pissed, foot tapping, none of my attention on the importance of a Roth IRA. I texted Elizabeth and told her to meet me where she'd taken me that morning.
I met her there after the bell had rung so that the halls would be empty. "So you finally came around huh?"
I said nothing. I knew the look in my eyes was that of a lion looking at a lioness in heat. She knew what I wanted. "So serious, daddy," she said.
That was it. I lost all control and I wasn't too concerned. I grabbed her by the throat pushing her against the brick walls, lips pressed against hers. I was kind of assuming she was into that kind of kinky shit and I was sure if she wasn't she'd push away.
But she didn't.
She grabbed me by my belt loops and put her leg around me. She bit my lip and sucked on it sensually. I felt like a male silverback gorilla marking his territory. I know, it's super chauvinistic to put it that way but in that moment, we had both reverted to primal instincts. We were going at each other in ways that would've only been seen on Animal Planet. Eventually I pulled away. "I think we should go to class," I suggested.
"Hmmm meet me at my car after school. My Aunt and Uncle don't come home from work until 7. By then we'll have had some alone time and we can go to a party tonight," she said out of breath.
"I don't know if my grandparents will be ok with that," I said, kind of worried.
"Come on, I thought you were the Captain now, big man."
"Alright, I'll tell them I'm working all night on a project at Daniel's"
She smiled and walked away, purposely shaking her ass so that I'd stare. It definitely worked.
My heart was racing. What did I just agree to? I never went out on a school night. This was going to be big for me. I found her so intriguing. She was clearly smart. She found me on Facebook without knowing my last name and managed to find out I was single without me telling her. She was sexy as all hell but the thing that I was entranced the most by were her eyes. They were like Kaa's eyes. The snake from the Jungle book? Whatever, the point is she was hypnotic.
I met her at her little Hyundai Elantra after school. I'd seen her get out of it the day before when Nicole picked me up in the school parking lot. I hopped in her passenger's seat and she turned her car on. "I hope you like Childish Gambino," she said.
"What do you even know about the great Donald Glover?" I said in a challenging tone.
"You probably haven't even watched Community," she threw back.
"Hashtag 6 seasons and a movie?"
"Wow," she said. "I'm impressed." She turned on Freaks and Geeks and started rapping the whole verse while driving. I joined in and both of us hit every word with perfect timing. If we had this good of rhythm while sleeping together, I knew it'd be something great.
We walked into her house and took our shoes off at the door. After we set our backpacks down, she grabbed my hand and pulled me to her bedroom. I noticed all of the pictures in her hallway of who I assume was her. It was a little blonde girl with piercing green eyes, so it was a safe assumption.
She pushed me on to her pink blanket laden bed and began taking off her shirt and bra. Once those were off she began pulling down my joggers. I don't really want to get into the specifics but I will say that it was something that I'd never experienced. I had hickies all over my chest and scratch marks all down my back. At times it was like we were wrestling for control but at the same time relinquishing and regaining it within minutes of each possession. I had never known that sex could be so intense. It was as if something had been released inside me that I didn't even know I was there.
Afterwards we went outside and smoked. "Wow," she said. "Nicole teach you all of those moves?"
"No," I replied. "Nicole and I always had pretty vanilla sex."
"I don't get what you mean."
"We only did missionary, cowgirl and occasionally doggie. She never even gave me head," I said with a sigh.
"Oh you poor baby," her tone was definitely sarcastic. "Really though, that sounds shitty. Well, you're in good hands now. As well as...other things."
I'd never met a girl so open about her sexuality. It was kind of refreshing. It was like being with myself. All of the fantasies I'd ever had seemed to have been fulfilled in just a matter of an hour. We went back inside and cuddled while watching some Netflix. When it hit around 6:30 we left to go to her friends house. When we arrived, she was getting ready and invited Elizabeth in to fix her makeup.
"Denise," said Elizabeth. "You don't need so much makeup."
"I don't give a fuck," she said, lengthening the u sound. "My eyes are about to be on fleek. You already know my boo Tyler is going to be there and I gotta look nice for him."
"I don't have to look nice for any man," replied Elizabeth.
I went to go sit in Denise's living room. I'd been there a couple times with Jackson, but I didn't know her all that well. All of a sudden, I heard Denise yell. "What the fuck!" She ran out into her living room and stood in front of me. "How the hell did your ass get Elizabeth to have sex with you?" She demanded.
"I don't know? I was just my charming self," I said with just a hint of arrogance.
"Mmmhmm," she said skeptically. "Whatever love potion your goofy ass used to get Elizabeth right after being with Nicole, you better start selling that shit." She walked back into her bathroom and Elizabeth came out.
"Sorry," she said. "I don't mean to go telling people our business but it was just so damn good." She was very obviously blushing and I thought it was the cutest thing. She turned around and walked back to Denise.
I sat there feeling an absolute swirl of emotion. On one hand, Elizabeth was just too good to be true. She seemed so perfect and I was too happy. On the other, I was still heart-broken about Nicole. 'Nah fuck that dude,' I thought to myself. 'She's a bitch and you need to be happy. Keep shit up with Elizabeth. She's a dime.'
'But Nicole was everything to you. You should try to get her back and give her another chance.' I could feel the angel and the devil on my shoulders. My angel was a sappy little bitch and my devil was just a savage. 'She messed up but we all do,' said the little angel.
'Nah, fam you're gay for that,' said little Satan. 'Elizabeth's ass is like an Instagram model's. You need to keep milking that until it dries up. Nut in her and keep her for 18 years.'
'Oookay,' I thought in between the two of them. 'That's a little too far.' I did know that I was going to continue with Elizabeth though. I owed it to myself to finally be happy after being unhappy for so long.
We hung out at Denise's house until about 9. After that we drove in Elizabeth's car to the party. It looked like more of a kickback since there weren't a ton of people, I mean it was a weeknight. We went into the house and the smell of weed hit me like a Mike Tyson knockout. I don't think I'd ever smelt weed so strong.
There were fivepeople who all looked like they were in their 20's sitting on a couch smoking. Two of them were guys and three of them were females. They had a huge bong and were passing it around.
"Hey, Dallas," Denise said to a darkskinned guy. "You guys got that loud?"
"Shit girl, you already know how it is. Who's the white dude?" he said motioning to me.
"I'm Ryan," I said with just a little bass in my voice, not wanting to sound intimidated.
He slapped my hand. "I'm Dallas, man. My house is yours just don't be a dickhead and you'll be fine."
"It's all good." I sat down on the floor in front of him with Elizabeth next to me. He motioned for me to take the bong and I shook my head. "No thanks man, I don't really smoke." I had smoked a joint or too but I honestly just didn't want to look like a bitch after taking a hit from that bong.
"Bruh, you're in my house, you gotta take a rip," he urged.
"Yeah, Ryan quit being a pussy," Elizabeth said jabbing me with her elbow.
"I don't know..." I said hesitantly.
"Where's the man who deadlifted four hundred pounds earlier today? All I see is a little bitch," she continued.
Pride took control of me and I grabbed the bong. Luckily the weed in it was green so it wouldn't be a super harsh rip. I lit the bowl piece and sucked hard. The two foot long tube became milky as fuck so I pulled the piece out, cleared it, exhaled and coughed my damn lungs out. Everybody laughed at me and called me bitch lungs but I didn't really care. I did it and I knew I took a fat hit.
After about 5 minutes, the room began spinning and I was struggling to remember how to breathe. I couldn't even keep my eyes open. It was as if I'd lost all basic motor control. My mouth felt like a desert and I almost didn't even know where I was. I made the mistake of letting my eyes close and that was the end of the night for me.

Hello.
Narrative distance is the enemy, here. I could hardly go two sentences without something that reminded the reader that this was a story— "could", "was", "felt". I know the temptation when using first person is to filter everything through the character's perception, trying to tell us exactly why this bit of information showed up in the prose, but that's only half of the thought for first person.
The primary benefit of first person is to allow us to experience everything about the scene as if we were feeling it. As a result, stuff like "felt" is counterintuitive— it reminds us this is a narrative. "My veins popped out of my neck" is a much stronger sentence because it brings in something visceral.
Very blunt statements that go into telling vs showing are also things to be careful of. Instead of saying "my favourite thing to work out was", you can go about it in different ways. Excitement for a fitness routine and only taking breaks from shoulders and back for muscle healing and if that wasn't the case, every day would be back day.
Honestly, this feels like an early draft where the goal is to get the story on paper, where you kind of just figure out all the traits that exist and what's important to the character. This is an absolutely critical step to writing, but it leads to a draft I call a "notes draft." What I mean by that is, everything ends up becoming just a reference point and you figure out how to turn it into a living, breathing character later, once you've written the full story and know where people end up and get a better idea of who the character is.
All in all, focus more on having us experience the character's life intimately, and try to find ways to get information about favourites and preferences out there without point blank saying they're favourites and preferences with nothing to support them.
Hope this helps. Let me know if you have questions or comments.

So I thought, if he doesn't like Christmas, maybe I can give him a Hanukkah present!
I'm rather surprised you haven't gotten more reviews... but I think the novel/chapter section has been hurting majorly.
First off, I still don't understand this culture. It's very interesting, but I also find it really strange. I applaud you at writing it, anyway, because I feel like it's a completely different view into highschool life that... I'm inclined to think is not true at all, most of the time.
I feel like the MC needs some work. Who is this guy? No really, who is Ryan? Besides the guy who just got dumped by his girlfriend and is getting taken advantage by a new girl... besides the guy who lifts weights-- WHO is Ryan? I don't feel a connection to him besides feeling vaguely sorry for him. This might be because I don't think Ryan has a lot of feeling, himself. Sure, he's hurt. But what does he love? WHO does he love?- romantic/sexual relationships aside. What are his aspirations? What are his goals? What does he plan to do with his life? What does he have for morals? I'm not asking you to plop a whole bunch of random info into the story, because that's not good, either... BUT I am saying to explore who this character is a little more. Maybe put him into a situation where he normally wouldn't be- one away from the gym, or sex, or drugs/drinking? Put him in a situation where we can see Ryan for who he is. Anyway, that's just a suggestion.
Something else I wanted to bring up: where is this going? We know that Elizabeth is a hazard, Ryan is going to be pushed to the edge, things are going to be gnarly, there's going to be more cat fights-- but why? I think mostly the drama and stuff has lost it's charm so early because there's no... tension- sure, there's a lot of tension, but it's difficult to care when there's SO much drama/tension, that it kinda becomes too much. Give us a reason to care about Ryan, and we'll care about the story. That kinda ties this in with the other thing I was talking about.
Other than that, I still find it fascinating. And I'm really curious as to what you're going to do with this next. You're writing is super easy to read- and that's a compliment. My favourite authors are the ones that just tell the story... if that makes sense! XP Anyway, keep it up!
