Blue Hour
Early mornings are a different kind of beauty.
Caressed by this flicker of liminality between the AMs.
Not a soul is awake, save for the chirping birds.
I am free,
I am unnoticed,
I am me.
I am free to exist in the temporary void that is an early morning.
I am unnoticed in the way I lean against my balcony railing, gazing at the unawakened world.
I have no one to impress or worry about, and so, I am me.
It is peace that settles around me, similar to the chilled breeze brushing through my hair.
The world is tinged in shades of indigo and blue,
It is still and untouched by disturbance or noise.
The hesitant flicker of the sun o'er the horizon, casting a warm, gilded hue.
This is my sanctuary.
And how I cherish these little moments,
After all,
I don't know how much longer I'll be able to enjoy them.

Hello! This is my very first review, and English is not my first language, but I just love poetry so I'll try my best!
I really like this poem. Though it's in fre verse (clearly, there's barely any rhymes here, and the syllable count varies wildly), it seems to tend towards iambic movements - which tends to make me think of a calm heartbeat and fits well with your intention of describing a calm morning.
I noticed you rely on more round sounds, like o and u (mornings, beauty, soul, birds, unnoticed and so on), which reinforce the quiet, reflective mood - and, you know, reflects the "blue, indigo" vibe you've got going on.
Also, clever use of the AM for morning, and then emphasizing the "am" as a form of to be, that made me smile. Those three verses are a anaphora - focuses on the solitude and links it to a sense of identity.
Overall, I would split it into three parts:
-Observation of the world
(morning, birds, quiet)
-Personal identity
(I am free / unnoticed / me)
-Reflection on impermanence
(I may not have this much longer)
Sometimes, I think the longer verses take away from its rhythm, but overall? The piece has a solid mood (which I quite enjoy, quiet, calm, melancholy), and a sense of contentment to it.
I'm not sure you were looking for a poem analysis, but I like writing them, and I hope you take from this that I really liked "Blue Hour".
(not sure what the "assistance of other tools" means in this case? I did have to use wikipedia to check for the stylistic devices, so I suspect that counts?)
Thank you so so much for your review, friend!! %u2764%uFE0F I am so honoured that my poem was the one you left your first review on. Welcome to YWS by the way, if you're new! I love your review so much, and I am always open to poem analysis, so worry not <3 I'm so glad you caught my play on words with the AM too. You captured what I was trying to portray so well, and that makes me so happy as the poet hehe. You have a knack for poetry analysis and so glad you liked "Blue Hour"
(P.s: Assistance of other tools refers to things like AI and such, and not writing the review yourself. Wikipedia does not count since you only referenced it <3)
I mean, Tika annoyed me into joining, and I really did make the decision because, well. This poem is really lovely, and I wanted to write a review, so here we are
I have to admit, I've always liked poem analysis, so this gives me a nice place to do it (my day to day doesn't really have a lot to do with poetry, which sadness).
And thanks about the AI thing! I did have to look up some of the stylistic devices, and it's good to know that's fine. To many more fun poems!
I'm not really a morning person, but I can definitely relate to what you are saying in your poem. Theres just something about waking up to a sunrise (when I'm not passed out on my bed sleeping) and sipping your coffee (in my case water).
''Not a soul is awake, save for the chirping birds.
I am free,
I am unnoticed,
I am me.''
I do notice when I look outside in the early morning, the animals are the only ones who seem to really be awake. Us humans are always looking for some reason to sleep in and not carry on with our responsibilities in life (basically me). The morning gives you a chance to reevaluate yourself and really be free and unnoticed as you said.
''I am free to exist in the temporary void that is an early morning.
I am unnoticed in the way I lean against my balcony railing, gazing at the unawakened world.''
This is the perfect, perfect scene I'd like to be in. Standing on the balcony while eating a croissant and tea and wearing comfy clothes!
''It is peace that settles around me, similar to the chilled breeze brushing through my hair.
The world is tinged in shades of indigo and blue,
It is still and untouched by disturbance or noise.''
I feel as we keep going into the poem, the narrator uses the morning to in a sense get away from the world before it starts waking up, and the last line really piggybacks off of what I'm saying.
Overall, I really enjoyed your poem, and I hope you keep writing (YOU WILL KEEP WRITING, just kidding).
Have a good day/night!
LMAOO >< Can I just say I love the way you wrote this review it made me laugh a little at the end. Thank you so much for leaving a review, and for seeing this poem so personally! You grasped what I was trying to convey and I love that. Your encouragements are so very appreciated <3 and I will most definitely keep writing ! So glad you enjoyed it!! <3
your welcomee
Ah, that final line leaves me as a reader with a bit of sadness and questioning... I'm very curious about it! My interpretation is the speaker is meditating on the loveliness of mornings and in particular that they can just *exist* unobserved and uninhibited, they acknowledge all the wonderfulness of it, but then in the end they observe "I don't know how much longer I'll be able to enjoy them" - I'm not sure if this is an observation on the finite-ness of mornings, or the speaker... are they expecting to pass-away, do they have somewhere to go, are they worried in the future they won't appreciate it as much? I'm left with many questions! Thanks for sharing your reflections on the beauty of mornings~ I am not a morning person, but there is certainly a beauty to mornings that your poem captures.
p.s. National Poetry Month is starting this April - hope you consider participating on YWS! It's a ton of fun! (More info about it on my wall!)
Ahh, I appreciate your review !! I'm glad the last line had its intended effect, and to be completely honest, it is very open-ended and up to your interpretation. Your understanding of it was interesting to hear too <3 I like to think very early mornings are a space of understanding between us, morning people, and night owls
I will also definitely be looking more into participating this April. Thank you for letting me know! <3
You're welcome!! Ah, good to know! (ha and you are so right about it being the space between!) Awesome - NaPo is a blast, you'll love it!
